Hailey's On It! (and Molly McGee’s Carbon Zero Heroes) Review

  • The fate of the world hangs in the balance as the risk-averse 14-year old Hailey Banks, her best friend Scott Denoga, and a powerful AI smartphone assistant named Beta have to complete every item on Hailey's list of stuff she's always wanted to do!
Oh, and Hailey has to kiss Scott. And somehow, all the romance in the show is actually really nuanced and compelling!
I didn't plan on this review of Hailey's On It turning into a review of the Molly McGee episode "Carbon Zero Heroes", but the premise of the show was asking for it.

Yeah, Molly McGee did a really great job with that too, we had some subtle background representation in Season 1, then we got Geoff and Jeff, which was brilliant. Then we learn that Andrea’s got a big crush on a girl she met at a summer camp, and it’s just very sweet and casual, and it’s not treated as a big deal. Because it’s *not* a big deal, she’s a teenager with a crush, that’s just about the most normal thing in the world! 🏳️‍🌈

Super excited to see you covered Hailey's on it. I've got a couple of running theories about a few things, but your review just gave me a possible 'Why' Motive towards one of them!
Also, little bummed you didn't bring up A.C. He's legit my favorite character because he's just so silly.
While I like a lot of your points, and you also said what I've been saying all along (that the kiss could/should just be platonic), one of the things I have so far found kind of annoying is just how in your face the whole 'Hailey/Scott must be end all' it is. Like, usually most shows don't seem or feel to push it on so hard. Case in point, Molly Mcgee. Her and Ollie felt very natural and clicked together. I didn't feel that being 'pushed in my face' at all, unlike this show. Kim Possible is another amazing example of the BFF trope friends to lovers done right and done naturally. There was never any push for them to be a couple, it just eventually over time was a topic that did come up and was like them discovering this whole new side to their relationship. Good times.
I have my own idea of a truly great 'Subverting Expectations' rug pull for this show, but with how they're building it, it'll never happen.
    But as usual, great video!

My review of this show: the show is pretty good. 8/10 my really only issue is with the animation. The saerom? Episodes are always so stiff when in there fiona and cake episodes look really good but I always feel they snap between poses. But in a rough draft episodes they move really fluidly. I do prefer kiff more. Kiff is like a random comedy that fits my wacky sense of humor with a random plot and they just throw jokes in like a bunch of little sketches. But in hailey’s on it it’s the same formula (not saying that’s a bad thing) but it feels like the same plot and feels like a copy of other shows and nothing new. I give it a high rating because I enjoy most of the stories and the rough draft episodes are really good (I love the Willy wonka ep def not cause weird Al is in it) I also like how the story kinda continues throughout every episode unlike Phineas and Ferb witch does a similar every episode follows the same basic formula with them building a invention while here they do a list item. So if you need a pretty solid show you should enjoy this!

As a massive theme park fan (if you couldn’t tell by the fact that this whole channel’s brand is one big homage to Disneyland) I think it’s really interesting how much the tunnel of love trope has endured in media in spite of the fact that those kinds of rides are basically nonexistent nowadays. Anything similar is still never branded as a ‘tunnel of love’ because that encourages the kind of behavior park operators generally don’t want from rowdy and/or hormonal teenagers.

@@SunnylandProds LOL 😂. I guess that’s right. Tropes like that tend to endure through the generations. Maybe it’s because they’re funny, or cringey. Now that I think about it, have you ever made a video about OLD rides, like at the New York World’s Fair in the late 1800s? There were a lot of new innovations for the time, including a ride that depicted Hell and scared the heck out of the kids, a Ferris Wheel that hosted weddings in one of the cars (including a horse standing on a platform mounted on top once), and even incubators for premature babies. I don’t remember the name, but I saw a whole documentary about it years ago.

I think the odder part is that nobody seems to value the lighthouse. Lighthouses are very valuable real estate, and people will pay a lot of money to buy them.
Even if everyone in Oceanside hated the lighthouse, there is probably a lighthouse enthusiast out there who would pay a lot of money to own it.
The story would have been better if Hailey was trying to restore it so it could become a park and prevent it from being sold to a wealthy person. It would also better fit the show’s environmental theme.

Hailey's On It is a really pleasant and cute show, answering your doubts about the mother, unfortunately there was a problem of the wrong order of the episodes, according to the production in fact the concert episode was set before the lighthouse one, which is also the same reason why a few episodes pass from Becker having a crush on Hailey to her hooking up with Kennedy, although in that case it still worked. I can't wait for the next episodes starting September 29th and most of all I can't wait for the return of The Ghost And Molly McGee on October 28th. Yeah, I’m genuinely surprised at how much I actually really like the romance arcs in this.
Scott’s so naive and sweet, there’s not a jealous bone in his body, so I don’t know why Kristine thought trying to make him jealous would have *any* reaction.
I’d buy the stuff with Hailey and her mom a lot more if they did more with it, but the idea that their relationship was ‘broken’ enough that fixing her relationship with her mom actually counted for ‘show mom I can fix anything’ just wasn’t set up. We should’ve seen the event (or series of events) that caused Hailey to make that a list item.
And like I said, I think it’s dumb that the resolution to the lighthouse episode is supposedly that she and her mom are gonna communicate better only for her mom to then gaslight everyone so that she can go to a concert a few episodes later.

  • @SilverScribe85

    I love this show!
Hailey is a fun protagonists, the list items she has are rather unique, her quest to better herself (as well as save the world) feels like a story worth rooting for and most of the side characters are charming; particularly Scott, Hailey's family and Kristine. I say "MOST" of the cast is charming because much like with any piece of art, there is always that ONE thing that always feels like a rather glaring flaw.
In this case, that glaring flaw is Beta.
His character serves as a reminder of why I hate robots and A.I. Not only is his constant bragging about his "super advanced intellect" more annoying than Brian Griffin's AND Lisa Loud's combined. But the fact that he's a machine without emotions makes him even worse, especially when his "precise" calculations always force Hailey into doing the most degrading and/or dangerous of list items (ex. eating an onion.) His constant talk of "highest probability rate of success" makes me want to just reach through the screen, rip him off that dumb teddy bear body of his and throw him into a wall.
Success should NEVER come at the expense of one's life or dignity, even if completing the list items WOULD supposedly save the earth (emphasis on supposedly.)
One of these days, I hope the Professor comes and gives Beta a talking to about how he should do things with Hailey

Culver’s is a fast food chain from Wisconsin (but we have locations down here in Florida, there’s one not far from my house!) that’s famous for their delicious butterburgers. They aren’t actually cooked in butter, the buns just get a nice spread of high-quality Wisconsin butter. And they’re VERY delicious. I’d put it right up there with In-N-Out Burger, honestly.

I like Hailey’s On It pretty well, it’s nothing earth shattering, but what is there is a decently fun time mostly.
For characters, I like the art and a lot of the designs look good and I enjoy all the major characters. Hailey is adorable and very relatable, being rather risk averse myself. Scott, while some of the “dumb best friend” jokes don’t land for me, I also never mind them outside finding it hard to believe since the world… mostly plays things realistically, compared to something like Molly McGee where things are a lot more wacky, so more zany out there characters make sense. But Scott really shines as being a good, supportive friend to Hailey, building her up to try new things and help her with her insecurities. And I like Beta, too, since he does genuinely care not just about the list, but Hailey, too. My only thing with Beta is I think his insults to Scott lack variety or real comedic punch to them, but like Scott’s stupidity, it never feels like I dislike the jokes.
Kristine is one of my favorite side characters since she subverts the typical “popular girl bullies the nerdy introvert” cliche by being a genuinely good friend to Hailey, and is also just an adorable hat nut as well. And while I’m not shipping them, Hailey and Kristine’s relationship has felt like it’s had way more focus than the Scott/Kristine relationship ever had. I also adore AC, both due to his voice actor Josh Brener bringing a great snarky performance, but also because I like his interactions with Hailey and Scott. And Hailey and Scott’s families are both enjoyable, though I wish the show gave them proper introductions because for what it’s worth, I thought Patricia was dead or divorced since she only shows up in a background shot in the pilot and a flashback before she’s necessary in an actual episode. I mean, the radio guys in the squid chase are given more introduction than any family for the two leads.
My big draw for the show was the time travel story they got going on, but unfortunately, it’s mostly in the background and feels out of focus compared to the episodic list clearing and the relationships and character focus the show does. And for their part, I think the list items and general stories they tell are still fun enough. And I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how they’ve handled the relationship stuff in the show. Kristine was written out of the love triangle before a line could be drawn, Becker’s crush on Hailey was crushed before it got even one episode of focus, and Scott and Hailey have enough chemistry as friends alone the moments of hinting at them being the romantic goal don’t feel distracting or forced.
It’s not a comedy riot like some of my more favorite Disney shows like Molly McGee or Phineas and Ferb, but I get a number of good laughs per episode. All things considered, I think it’s a solid show that has potential to be the next “starts out formulaic and wacky misadventure-y before it gets into lore and becomes story focused”, which is a format I enjoy. And even if they strictly stay formulaic nonsense, that’s fine, too- the show is one I can just turn off my brain and enjoy.
And side note- I liked Carbon Zero Heroes for taking the throwaway line of Ollie’s of wanting to reduce his carbon footprint and rolling with it, it’s another way the show takes a briefly mentioned idea and fleshed it out for a full episode. Ollie and Molly are also great since that episode was very much not focused on shipping- not a single bit of the episode focused on their crush on each other. And I always enjoy Libby and Scratch being paired together, and Libby going full on conspiracy in the episode was hilariously unhinged.

Yeah, I quite like Hailey's On It so far. Sure, it can be a little flimsy in its writing in places, but I do like some of its characters a lot. Hailey being a cautious scrunklo, Scott being a lovable nitwit, Uncle Ruckus, I mean Beta being amusingly sassy, Kristine being an actually nice positive portrayal of the rich/influencer girl archetype and my personal MVP, Becker, being such an absolute unit in her love of chaos and blowing things up. She and Darryl would definitely be really good friends. Oh yeah, and her relationship with Kennedy seems pretty wholesome and I hope they give that more focus.
But yeah, Molly McGee and Moon Girl are still better with the former still handling topics with a surprising amount of nuance for what looks like a colourful supernatural comedy and the latter being not only one of the best cartoons to come out of 2023, but maybe, just maybe, one of the greatest Disney TVA shows of all time.

I think maybe part of the problem is just that Molly McGee and Moon Girl are so damn good, and then Hailey’s On It and Hamster and Gretel come out, and they’re just… okay.

I actually like all the shipping, because I’m a romantic. 😅 So far ‘Hailey’s On It’ has kept me entertained, but I think it’s episodic nature and lighter tone have gotten a little in the way of the story. For example, when they did the lighthouse episode, they had her ‘fix things’ with her mom. Aside from the flamingo episode, which anyone could have missed, I also noticed that it didn’t seem like anything was broken. Then the concert episode premiered later, and could clearly be viewed out of order. It all still works, but I crave more story structure.

The show is still in its early episodic days. I’m sure by the time Season 1 airs it finale or when Season 2 premieres, the show will start to bring that serialized narrative into the focus more. The creators did say there’s an overarching plot in this show!

Glad you were able to find stuff to like about this show. I tried to watch it, and it just wasn’t for me, as I just felt so bored during the eps I tried to watch. Also the animation style is a huge turnoff for me :/ but again, glad it has its audience, and hopefully it gets some sort of satisfying conclusion

I love the theme song. It gives off Green Day vibes for some reason.
I also think it would’ve been a better casting choice for Jenna Fischer to play Haley’s mom rather than Julie Bowen.
    Still could happen, though.

I think your take on this show is interesting, although I kind of have a different opinion on Hailey’s on it. I feel like Nick and Devon are likely waiting until Season 2 or 3 to tackle the climate change angle, and the main theme of the show currently is setting a goal and overcoming fears and anxieties to reach said goal.

Wait. Why did you have to ask that Culver's question? A question i have was ... Was becker supposed to even be gay? I ask this because I noticed that they either sabotage or abandon plot points to sort of stretch the show. I mean, they got Kristen back in the love shape after the breakup so, what's stopping the same from happening with Becker? (Also, i think Hailey's kiss is probably going to be uneventful like a mistletoe kiss at Christmas)
Edit: also, the climate change thing probably isn't that the villain want to climate change. it's more like "you idiot! You doomed us both" sort of situation and that it's about stopping the future war that leads to the rise of climate change and global warming.
I sound like a mad man saying all of this.

To be honest I just watch this show is a guilty pleasure since well for me I feel like animation Hass to be fun and fast paced for example The team hot wheels trilogy which has the origin of awesome the skills to thrill and build an epic race the animation looks vibrant And the moments with Gage Wyatt Brandon and Rhett are fast pace when they’re inside The twin mill The jump truck the quick n sick and boneshaker And the jokes in the movie are pretty funny like an all three movies that are running gag where this robot Jerry always throws water in Rhett’s Face for no particular reason at all and if you’re wondering Jerry is basically the robot their mentor/boss Larry built
