Another great instructional video! Bravo for NOT editing out the broken needle recovery. This is something every sewer needs to know - not every project goes perfectly! Great job, and great project! I made a bag for my hubby’s little point-and-shoot camera, but wish I had made the paracord closure that you did!!!!

Rob Thank you so much for this tutorial!! It came at just the right time for me! My Dad is a 27 year Navy Veteran and he runs a program for disabled veterans called Project Healing Waters. Its a program where he teaches them how to tie fly's, for fly fishing and then they go on fishing trips and he teaches them how to fly fish and use their own handmade lures! Its a fantastic program, and I am so proud of him and of course grateful for everything our Vets have done for us. They do a lot of fundraisers to earn extra money for supplies and trips etc. and I've made a ton of your "pin cushion scrap bag thread catchers" for them to use for all their scraps while fly tying and they just love them. I have been wanting to make them all something new and this will just be PERFECT!! Make them in all different sizes, to store all their fragile tools they use for fly tying. Maybe even make some big enough to store their fly rods, be nice to have to protect those ;).. Thanks again Rob you have taught me so much, I and the Vets cant thank you enough!! You come up with amazing tutorials!! Keep up the great work! You truly have a god given talent and its awesome of you to share it with us!! Take Care!!

I made a compression bag to hold a travel size pillow for a week-long trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The bag worked great and I'm still using it 30 yrs later. Nice project. Thanks for sharing!

Wow!! I can't believe this! I was just thinking how I really need to make a padded gear bag for my tracing light pad I use for making applique pieces. It came without a cover so this is perfect timing!! Thanks!!

Here I thought I was making a break through. I made a camp pot cover. It was my second project that I had done. Funny my niece said I was doing it wrong. Lol it was right all along. Thanks for the back up.

How cool, and I liked that you didn't edit the needle break out. I have done that. I am going to make a camera equipment pouch.

I need to make a padded camera lens bag with the Army OCP fabric. This tutorial will definitely help me construct a bag that I can add the molle connections to my chest rig. Thank you. Do you have any suggestions for a flap that can cover the drawstring? It would be simple to add a buckle to secure.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I had a problem carrying my soundbar; it is 30 inches long and 12 inches wide. A blueprint tube couldn't fit it in. Will search for the padding and suitable canvas. Keep it up!

I have been wanting to make a roll pillow for the back of the couch. The seating back is too short, need some place to lean my head. I think I could make this bigger and use the Bosal to make it stiff enough, fill it and close each end, thanks for this tutorial! I will attach a layer of cloth that will slide between the back of the cushion, maybe even enclose that with Bosal....

Wouldn't a jeans or denim needle be better for canvas instead of a universal needle Rob?

I wonder if there is a way to sew up the long seam to make it appear as if it were top stitched with two rows of stitching on a lapped seam like outward seam of jeans pant leg? After folding the one edge over and doing the pair of top stitches would it still be possible to use some sort of blind stitch to do the actual closing of the seam? Would it end up being a weak seam?

It would be difficult to do with a conventional machine and I think it might be a bit weak if hand sewn. For a bag as stiff as this, I doubt you could deform it sufficiently to do a French seam. Funnily enough, I've just sold an industrial blind stitching machine which might have been useful for something like this.

Using canvas and foam seems to create bulk and therefore when you use the drawstring to pull the top closed, it still has a hole that knitting needles, drumstricks, etc...could fall through.

    • @rabbytca

I would try sewing a firm padded disk, same as the one used for the bottom but with the edge serge/cover stitched all the way around, just inside and below where the draw string ends emerge. Probably about 2.5cm[1"] along the same stitch line used for the draw string closure. I think the stiffness of the padded circle should prevent most items from escaping.
My first though was to sew one or three large buttons inside the opening but I dismissed it as being too fussy because buttons would probably have to be hand stitched in and if put too close to the edge of the opening might not turn down to overlap the hole from the underside when the draw string is pulled taught.
