Instead of boning, in thread catchers or anything you want to keep open, I use strapping off of parcel packages. Your home improvement places, throw them away daily and will give it to you for free. It will fold as well and always pop right back into shape as long as its never creased. Needle goes right through it without any issues, just don't get the metal strapping. I do my tool holder longer, same distance as my sewing machine and add slide in pockets on the back for my larger rulers. Keeps em out of the way but handy for when needed. Awesome job and your teaching skills are finaminal Rob. Always a pleasure to watch your videos.
I love that you show your improvisational methods when available tools aren’t working as desired. Sometimes we rely so much on our gadgets that we forget that quilters got on just fine without (some of) them. Thanks so much for the entertaining education!
Thank you for the video and the plans link. I like this smaller version of a sewing machine mat for the reasons you mentioned. 👍 Tips: I've used zip ties for boning. Make the thread catcher, sized to fit a disposable plastic cup of choice. Much easier to simply pull cup out of the bag and empty, than trying to remove snipped threads from a fabric bag. Wide selection of sizes from small drinking cups to quart sized food containers. Other similar objects can be used, as well. Cut down water bottle, for example.
I was just thinking about putting a little sandwich bag in it- because “at times” I NEED some chocolate and a liner of some type would keep the pouch clean when wrappers might have to go in! 😉

I've made one of these; they really do come in handy and save me time from 'hunting' for stuff. I didn't do a removable pocket, but I'll make a matching one from my sewing machine n mat now. TFS
What a great project! I like the size of this caddy, as well as the removable little trash container. Most caddies are too long/big for use at my machine setup. This one will be very usable. I also appreciate being able to use the layer cakes in my stash. Thank you for sharing this!
What a coincidence my sewing partner had something similar and I was questioning her and here you are showing your talent. WOW! I just love it. can't wait to make it and share.
Great video for this project, Rob. I laugh that you posted a new video today because my mother knows I watch your videos so for my birthday (which is really next week) purchased for me a package which included: 1) a Man Sewing T-Shirt, 2) a Man Sewing Magnet & 3) a Man Sewing Sticker and gave it to me today before I even watched this video!
Thank you so much Rob, I really really enjoyed watching you create this Amazing And Gorgeous sewing machine caddy. Another great idea too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Rob I just saw you at missouri Star Videos and I have to say... I just fall in love with you.. Your appeareance, your voice, your energy, and you are talking about sewing... I mean, this was enough for me... If I hadn't the greatest husband all over the World and two kids here at home in germany I would have come to you and chase you, till you're mine.... Really
Rob, this project made me realize, what I could need help with. I am part of a repair cafe movement. We have meetings in a youth house, where we can rent the rooms. I am textile repair person and dont have a car, so would love to have a safe backpack type carrier case for my sewing machine, threads, gadgets and some fabrics that I use as under the threadbare parts of clothing. Using busses, trams and sometimes my bike to get there, the machine would travel much safer in a padded backpack instead of the bumpy ride I have at the moment with a shopping trolley, I have my stuff on. I would be interested, if you see this need maybe popular enough to make a tutorial out of it? I can't be the only one neding to transport my sewing stuff without the safety of a car.
Zip ties are another option. Come in many sizes and colors. It's what I use for this type project. If nothing else is available, strips can be cut from flexible cutting mats, bleach bottles, and other semi-rigid /semi-flexible plastics. Be care about sharp edges with some of them. Use sandpaper / emery board to soften edges, if needed.
I love this project! SO CUTE! Great gifts for my sewing peeps! Thanks for another great tutorial. Not gonna lie, I miss seeing your happy face every week! Hopefully this is just a temporary change??
Love this -- I love my pin cushion with trash bag. Unfortunately, the table I use for sewing now is slippery and the pin cushion tends to slide off with the weight of the little bag. I use a magnetic pin container now, so this will be perfect to keep my scrap bag handy and avoid it falling on the floor! Thank you
Robgra I put a piece of non slip runner under mine. The stuff in a roll that they use for shelf liners or under rugs. Use them for so much. Hope that helps.
@@robinwhiddon5728 Robin, I did the same thing. Made machine mats as gifts. Added non-slip shelf liner to the back, in case the machine wasn't heavy enough to keep in place, if the pockets had much weight in them.
Hi Rob, I just came across this wonderful tutorial and was anxious to make the pouch but sadly, the link for the pattern isn’t working. Is this no longer available or has the link been changed but not updated on this tutorial? With that aside, I absolutely love your tutorials. Keep up the good work!
Hello, is there a sewing machine that has or can rotate the foot and feeding 90 degrees? This is in order to switch a long tube 6" diameter of fabric say 2 to 3 feet long. On a regular machine I have to bunch up the fabric and it just does NOT work as I am butting against the enclosure of the mechanical sync shaft of the feed mechanism, if you know what I mean. I would like to slip my tube over that mechanism and stitch, no table involved. I looked at the Zuki's but I don't know what this feature is called. Thank you.
What is the brand of your iron and the brand of your sewing machine? I really love your iron; it looks much less annoying to use than the traditional triangle-ish shapes.
I just got a sewing machine today, tried to hem some pants that are 4 inches too long. Not as easy as you make it look lol. I guess I'll get better with time.
I'm curious to know how you use this pouch. You never showed a picture of it in place. The description says "under machine" but you can't do it to the right end of the machine because the power cord will be in the way. You can't put it towards the front, left, or back because it will catch on the fabric as you sew. I don't know where it goes.
I have a question ....what is the mechanism on your machine that is just to the right of the pressure foot. Is this something that helps keep your material straight as you sew?
How do we contact you about questions? I've tried to make different projects, but get frustrated because of no written instructions! Please help! I love your projects😊
Would love to see a tour of your Man Sewing vest, sometime. Often wonder what you've stashed in it. Did you make it or pick one up in a sporting goods dept. somewhere?
I knew what it is. Designed to carry ammo and other gear, depending on specified usage. Just wondering what he has in the game pouch, for example. 😉If memory serves, in an earlier video, he said he would give a better look. Thanks for the reply.
This would make great gifts for Christmas. Maybe get some done between all the quilts if I start now. Military Hubby wanted to know where ammo and chocolate bars are kept in your tactical vest! Can’t wait to see you at KCRQF. Still using “Sharky” in collage work. What a great tool.
why are you putting 2 pockets, 1 on each side? i'm confused? am i supposed to have a rung on my table so that this can hang on it that swings out so that both sides are useable and i have easy access to that second pocket? otherwise isn't that 2nd pocket going to be sitting under the sewing machine and be a waste of cloth and thread? and are the measurements for this so it can sit in the front? i don't understand why every tutorial is for it to sit in the front. if you are sewing anything, it sits in front of you. wouldn't it get all caught up in either your tools or the pouch itself? Wouldn't it be smarter to make one that hung off to the right of the machine.where nothing you are sewing will come in conact with it? i'm not trying to be contrary, it's just my logical brain isn't seeing how i would make things easier.

Love my machine mat for sew days away from home. I used the clear plastic for my pockets so I could see my stuff! Much easier on my brain! Ha!
Hi Rob...so happy to see you back. This is a great project. Love the fabric! Thank you.
Boy I sure do need one of these... You even use my favorite color. Where have you been Rob?
I use painters tape for marking line to sew up against or for quilting, my mom showed me that technique
Rob, this project made me realize, what I could need help with.

I am interested also.
If you don't have any boning handy you can use the plastic strapping off of shipping packages
Great tip, thanks Jennifer Dilgard!

I use package strapping all the time! It's perfect. =)
I save all of my strapping for this very reason
I have saved numerous pieces of strapping for the only reason that they oughta come in handy some day- this is brilliant and I'm glad I saved them!
Great project! Can’t wait to make it. I made the Firewood Carrier project as a gift and it was a big hit. Thanks Rob ✂️
Hi from Scotland. Another great idea and just what i need for my tools. Thanks again Rob, I really appreciate all your tutorials. Regards.
I've also used a long pipe cleaner (edges wrapped in tape so they aren't sharp) and it works beautifully.
Awesome Rob. Gonna make one for my new quilting buddy - Granddaughter Zoey!!
I love your videos since day 1 !
You always make me laugh.
Your projects are easy to folloe.
You, Rock!!
I love this project! SO CUTE! Great gifts for my sewing peeps! Thanks for another great tutorial. Not gonna lie, I miss seeing your happy face every week! Hopefully this is just a temporary change??
love this project , your fabric choice is beautiful that's a must have ! thanks Rob your so much fun
This would be quite handy. Thank you.
where can I find one of those seam guides for the sewing machine?
Would be nice to see the project setup. Enjoyed the video!
I’ve used package or box strapping instead of boning. Works well!
The quilt behind you I think my husband would love. Can you tell me me name and if you have a video on it?
Thanks and I really enjoy your videos.
Really enjoy your tutorials. Made one today. Cheers
Lol I want to see a bowie knife, sewing machine and straight pins on your t shirt!!!
Where is your weekly video. We miss you
Great video Rob. Love the fabric aswell
Very useful project. Thanks for sharing!
Hi there Rob as alway's just Amazing thank you (smile)
can u make a couch caddy? to fit a book, remotes, and maybe stuff to use to hand sew.love your videos.
I know this is old, but heads up the link is broken. Thanks for the tutorial it was awesome 😎

thanks,@@robinwhiddon5728. that's what I use instead of quilting gloves. I'll try it under the pincushion, but I like the pad
Robgra I really think I would like it. I’m gonna work on making one this week. I like the smaller size of this one 😊
@@robinwhiddon5728 Robin, I did the same thing. Made machine mats as gifts. Added non-slip shelf liner to the back, in case the machine wasn't heavy enough to keep in place, if the pockets had much weight in them.
Oldtimer Lee I do the same. They come in handy for sure.
Hi Rob love your videos. Would a metal seam allowance gadget go on any machine? If yes where do you get them?
Do u have a link for the pattern please? The link in your description no longer works.
Hi Rob,
I just came across this wonderful tutorial and was anxious to make the pouch but sadly, the link for the pattern isn’t working.
Is this no longer available or has the link been changed but not updated on this tutorial?
With that aside, I absolutely love your tutorials. Keep up the good work!
Rob, is there a step by step instruction that I can download and print?
Hey Rob!! Are you only doing bi-weekly shows now? I've really been missing my monday Man Sewing! P.S. Are you ever coming to the Mid-Atlantic area?
Hi Penni! Yes, all Man Sewing Tutorials now have a bi weekly release. :)
Rats!

👋🏼👋🏼 Nice ✂️ Project 👍🏼
Is your machine a Juki? Love this project and great tips from the comments on the boning product
Making that little bag reminded me of herding cats

Hi there new in the club. I wondering about your hand Iron, Where do I get one of if?
Juan
I think an apron would suit me better. With a trash bag.
I have a question ....what is the mechanism on your machine that is just to the right of the pressure foot. Is this something that helps keep your material straight as you sew?
Where can I find the pdf printable? The link above doesn't work. Thank you.
Are you still posting videos?
What else can I use other than the foam?
How do we contact you about questions? I've tried to make different projects, but get frustrated because of no written instructions! Please help! I love your projects😊
Could you use cable ties instead of boning? That way you could tie off the cable to fit
I have so much scrap material left over from clothes I have made over 40 years that I have to use it to make some of these.
PDF IS GONE
What is the sewing machine make and model you are using please?
Hey rob when i tryed to download the free pattern for this it gave me a error code is this on my end or yours or is the pattern no longer avaliable
I can't download this! It says something went wrong.
You can now find Rob on his new channel " Making it fun with Rob Appell"
To get a quarter inch seam you can buy quarter inch feet for your machine instead sometimes the guide gets in the way
Ciao.

Che bello vederti.
Wait you run off the corners, then you dog ear them? Doesn't that cut the stitching and make the corners weak? Maybe I'm not understanding
Hi Rob The pattern link does not work
Where do you get your cool t-shirts?
You can find them on the Missouri Star website! www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/browse?&q=man+sewing&Product_Type=Apparel
This cute. But ill fill the trash pocket in 2 mins lol.
Would love to see a tour of your Man Sewing vest, sometime. Often wonder what you've stashed in it. Did you make it or pick one up in a sporting goods dept. somewhere?
