  • Day 128-130. 62km (79394kms 7yrs)
It was such a gorgeous stay with the family in Metlaoui. Just as in Melendugno Italy, the extended family live in one block so little baby Ali grows up with his grandmother, aunties and uncle next door.
During my time there I’d been dressed up in traditional clothes, shown how to prepare different Tunisian dishes, and got my hands hennaed. But after my bike had sat for a second afternoon in 41C sunshine I discovered the rear tyre to be suddenly flat. On investigation I found the tube had split at the seem. It’s nice to know I’m still learning new things after all this time on the road 🤦🏻‍♀️
Of course the family will have been obliged to notify the authorities of my departure but I hadn’t left town before noticing I was being followed by an unmarked car. I would be followed by four unmarked vehicles during the day, only one of which would have the courtesy to provide me with ID. Why these men think it’s reasonable to tail a solo traveler through the desert and just ask that she believes when they say they’re police is mind-boggling to me.
Since moving east away from the Algerian border had not improved the surveillance situation whatsoever I decided to return west to the border village of Tamerza. It was a gorgeous ride though through some pretty barren flat land, with the occasional oasis of palm trees. After 50kms I turned north to begin climbing into to the village. Famed for its waterfalls, these days they’re now more paddling pools than places to swim, but still incongruously and deliciously cool shady places in the otherwise hot dry landscape.
I checked into - no, the National Guard checked me into - the local auberge; a brand new building with freshly painted rooms, new clean bed linen, and an en suite. These government run facilities are very affordable - essential while I’m being prevented from camping. But I found nowhere in town for dinner so had to make do with some measly snacks in my lovely room.

You asking the undercover police for ID is my favourite thing on the internet at the moment.

These are desert areas bordering Libya and Algeria. In those areas there is a secret police to protect Tunisia from smuggling. Smugglers today use methods such as bicycles and even animals such as donkeys to smuggle contraband

Really?! That would explain a lot! They kept saying it was ‘for my safety’ while doing very little that had anything to do with my safety, but more just keeping track where spent each night..

“Avez-vous une carte d’agent de la garde nationale?”: I told you you could do it! 🥳👏👏😉
