I love Boo's style, it's very neat. I would love to see more of his interpretations of DC and Marvel hero's. He uses the reverse mirror trick too. AWESOME I was beginning to think I was the only artist who did that. None of my artist friends do and were making me feel kind of like some paranoid OCD drawer. He has a good point about the lack of variety in major publishing though. In fact I have heard that because of huge names like DC and Marvel it can be hard for many indie franchises and characters to get/ stay off the ground.
Hi Luigi - Boo might correct me on this, but i believe that he is using A2 paper format for his pencil work. The drawing board is an A0 parallel motion board I think.
sorry chaps, don't check in here very often! my page size is generally A3 and as for panel sizes that depends entirely on the script. it could be a single splash panel taking up the whole page or even the size of a stamp if that's what's required... hope that helps.
+Mr. Gallant If you watch the video through to the end there is a breakdown of Boo's creative process. Not sure how long it takes anyone to draw an entire story - depends on the length i guess...
Haven't bought 2000ad for years, genre stuff just doesn't interest me at all anymore. Still, nice seeing Cook's process and I do like his farily "cartoonish" approach to his work. Some people are obviously more suited to work with a writer, for me though the best, "purist" comics are those written, drawn and lettered by the same artist. Proper cartooning. And Tamara Drewe is a fucking amazing book. Not necessarily MY thing either but it's a fantastic "literary" comic. And none of those comics he holds up are pushing ANY boundaries--the real avant-garde is happening in the small boutique presses, self-published and of course Fantagraphics and D & Q, the "big two" alternative publishers. Comics have had a fucking bellyful of "messed up post-apocalyptic worlds". BORING......CORPORATE COMICS STILL SUCK!!! No disrespect to Boo Cook, he's good at what he does...it's just what he does is hackneyed unoriginal genreshit. Comics, to me, are about creating your own visual language and putting the way YOU see the world down on paper...ah dunno what I'm complaining for there're plenty of idiosyncratic voices to keep me going for the rest of my life!!! I will admit Image are putting out some GREAT, original genre books, though....
+vollsticks Good to read a different opinion on this. I just found your comment in the spam box, but I think it should be on the page - so apologies for it going up a year after you posted it. I have to say though, one man's 'hackneyed unoriginal genreshit' is another man's mind-expanding visual trip. There is a market for all genres in the world of comics, and obviously the 'post apocalyptic sci-fi' world has now seen around 70 years of development - it's true... the end of 'life-as-we-know-it' has been overworked by many, but it is still a real draw to a lot of people (Just look at the audiences for Walking Dead, Mad Max etc). A truly original concept is a hard nut to crack. When you grow up admiring an artist or comic, and learn how to draw in that style, of course your art has the possibility to develop and portray your own version of that inspirational vision..... after all we are talking about an imaginary world. Corporate comics might suck, but I for one believe that 2000AD has always been a game changer. The stories are still pushing the boundaries and stretching the imagination, drawing in new readers and keeping long-time readers hooked... even if some of the characters could/ should have hung up their slippers a long time ago.
+Clive Makong'o "Comics are for kids..." I don't think Boo is suggesting that the comics medium is 'only' for kids. He just references the way that his grandad introduced him to comics... through a child's comic and then eventually onto 2000AD. Trust me, I've seen his Elephantmen work, and it is certainly not for kids. :O)
+nicholas cato Thanks! Glad you like it. This is a completely independently produced video and i put the whole thing together in under 3 days... including the shoot, the after effects animations, the edit and recording the soundtrack. It is a completely DIY effort with no funding - although the quality of Boo's work means i had a lot of great visuals to work with. In hindsight, the soundtrack is quite dark and brooding, but I still think it fits quite well. It has a certain sense of discovery about it... and i guess is kind of in keeping with those John Carpenter sci-fi themes. I'm not personally sure that a jolly soundtrack would have fitted... but I accept the criticism. My only issue with the audio is that i didn't use a clip on Mic for the interviews.... but i did;t have one at the time! :O)
+Ric Blow my personal preference of music was a very small critique, but now coming back a year later I actually agree with you lol. Again awesome interview man just wish there were more of these!
Comics aren't necessarily for kids. Consider political comics. Comic books also, all a kid would see in them is action and colours. If the comic book is actually worth anything the it would contain content and a story that would be clever, make you think, and at most, make you reconsider morals, and big life conundrums. But a kid wouldn't see that in a comic book worth reading.
+BallistiK Clan - Agar.io with the acception of some more mature kids, but I'm pretty sure that for instance, a kid wouldn't see depth in a moral decision like in the walking dead comic books where a character is bitten, and wants to kill themselves in order not to become a brainless zombie, and our protagonist has to decide wether or not to give the character a gun in order to do so. such deep moral issues surely can't be either fully taken seriously or understood by the average child. so, think again maybe?
i totally agree! while some comics are for kids, the majority aren't these days. sometimes words come out of my mouth and later i think 'WTF was i saying?!' and it unfortunately happens to be recorded for eternity on a youtube vid. ah well.... :)
Do anybody remember DC"S superhero ICON which was under milestone comics i think...they they cancelled it...I was so excited I thought more african american hero's was gone show in comics but they cancelled all the comics...that's why i Don't like dc...lol
I love love love his sketchbook.
I like this video a lot. Boo Cook seems like a really decent guy as well as a great artist.
Yeah... he's a talented man. You should check out his bands as well - 'Motherbox' and 'Forktail'. :o)
i totally agree with this guy,im sick of the same characters over and over again, thats why i got into independent comics
I love Boo's artwork, on Elephantmen, Anderson: PSI Division, and anything else he turns his hand to. He has a very unique and fun cartooning style.
his drafting table is hugeeeee
Very interesting to hear him talking. I have his original pencil drawing for the 2000AD front cover Dredd 'Gun Law'.
lovely

Ever try inking in Manga Studio 5?
What paper are you using ? It's very spacious !
A3 bristol board. apologies for the 3 year reply time!
Boo Cook I just watched this for the first time so your reply was timed perfectly....
Am I the only one who thought he sounded like FrankieonPCin1080p?
hi ric what is the standard size of the drawing board & the standard size of a single panel ?
hope you will answer tku so much

Hi, how long does it take you to draw an entire story? Do you pencil and ink it also? Who does the coloring? How does that work?
+Mr. Gallant If you watch the video through to the end there is a breakdown of Boo's creative process. Not sure how long it takes anyone to draw an entire story - depends on the length i guess...
Love this vid but please take out the high pitch sounds hurts our ears
What are the names of the women characters at 0:07 and 0:17??
I can't help you with their names, but I suspect they are from a 2000AD strip. The character at 0:17 appears again at 10:49.
Haven't bought 2000ad for years, genre stuff just doesn't interest me at all anymore.

Shit man, why is it for kids? Its a fucking medium, not a genre
EXACTLY
+Clive Makong'o "Comics are for kids..." I don't think Boo is suggesting that the comics medium is 'only' for kids. love the vid but horrible choice of background music something upbeat would've been perfect

Terrible background music man. Please use different music or dispense with it altogether in the future. Otherwise, good profile.
Please see the other comment on this elsewhere. ;o)
