Being humble about his work is part of the reason I like Joe so much. But he should be a little more positive about past work I think. We all grow and get better in every activity. The early work we do is a valuable stepping stone to the better work we do later.
The Deadpool work he mentions is actually really good. Better than most pros ever get and the fact that he was 19 is mind blowing. He came into his own style over the years but he could draw extremely well right from the beginning.
I can relate to this. I've been having problems keeping myself interested in what I'm working on and when that happens it's better to just lay the pencil down and work on something else that you feel you can really put your passion into, and more often than not you will find a way back around to working on that other project. It's all a balancing act, honestly.
my fav artist by far....been enjoying his work since the first deadpool mini all the way to battlechasers and his lil runs on spidey & wolvie! keep it up man!
With how Joe's art is so filled to the brim with in-your-face, high octane energy and high testosterone awesomeness I didn't expect the man to be this laid-back and chill.
5:55 heartbreaking! Joe Madureira's X-Men artwork in the 1990's made me the fan of his work that I am today. i love everything about the physical characteristics of his renderings. it appeals to my penciling style. my artwork today is HEAVILY inspired by his work then. those images by him holds as much nostalgia for me as most tv shows, movies, and songs do for society. most artists critique their past works harshly, but he shouldn't. it was great artwork.
He left comics to pursue video games cuz obviously it pays better. He formed Vigil games and was the first to jump ship when it went bankrupt. Now he's like "oh gee video games didn't work out for me I guess I'll go back to doing comics." Fuck him.
sylvester1046 Then he decided to back on his original creations and he's like "oh hey I'll just release an anthology which is a collected edition with a new hardbound cover and some old sketches and sell it at a really steep price. Genius!" Fuck him twice.
i love how he makes noises when he draws, i used to do that when i took drawing a lot more seriously in the early 90s. i always wanted to master his style but that was impossible
As far as his style not lending itself to certain genres he can get past it by doing semi loose pencils and letting a good inker put their touch to it to help it blend better.
he is an excellent mimic, when he first emerged on the scene (at the age of16, I believe) he was emulating Art Adams in style and eventually evolved into the Manga influenced phenom he has become
People who saying that his artwork is shit then you haven't seen his artwork on comic books he is one amazing artist if not one of the best you will know if you seen some of his artwork in comics
I don't know what he's talking about. He's older work is awesome and imo, even better than what he does nowadays. Sure, he has improved and he's more skilled now, but I just prefer the manga influenced style.
it's hard being eloquent while you draw. For me personnally i can follow any conversation or audio podcast or whatever, but commenting as you do isn't easy at all.
He looks so humble and current, when he was one of the outstanding few concept draw influencers back in the 90's, globally speaking, when there was no commercial internet btw...
Damn i want that drawing. I also want to draw like Joe Mad. I used to draw but never liked how my stuff looked once I put it on paper. I had ideas like what Joe Mad does but i could never get it to look as awesome as his stuff.
I can generally relate to his embarrassment at his old work, but I cracked open the X-Cutioner's Song TPB recently (Joe wasn't in the creative teams for that crossover, just using it as a reference) and was reminded of the comic art trend at the time. Apart from Joe's earliest work, his art was different, distinct, exciting and aged better than even the other artists who entered "the manga style trend". That's why he kept getting work.
I'm an artist, and it's REALLY hard to talk and draw, or if someone wants to watch you (even a camera) you tend to be a bit nervous and kind of ramble. It's not easy to divide your mind like that, because the entire time you're drawing you're running this massive inner monologue of "no no, that needs to be here, shoulder goes like this, I don't think this is working oh wait now it is, I like this wrist joint, ooh and this muscle line, ect..." That inner voice never goes away.
I also read somewhere that for a third Darksiders to be made Darksiders 2 had to sell no less than 4 million copies, and in which case they would focus on more scope than scale for the third, "which had worked wonders for Batman Arkham City". Yet another indicator of batman similar gameplay in terms of, among other things, character swapping.
I feel ya on the camera angle choices. Could have made a sling and hung it ... stabilization would have been a bear though... really no other option than that. (two tall tripods with a rope and a 3 point connection to the camera that is hanging) He leans over like i do when drawing though... so choosing between the hand and the back of his head, you made the right choices =) Love your lighting choice BTW!
I want dark siders on a mobile platform. Ps vita, vita tv, 3ds, android, ios. I loved the story and I think that I would do well, even look really close to the original. Sad.
I like that he is a realist in his thought process and lacks the ego so that he understands himself and his work. He seems very honest.
Compared to Todd McFarlane your right I mean I love McFarlane but joe mad seems real
Well art never lies. You can say you love someone but you cannot paint that you love someone, people who watch your art will see it immediately.
Bring back Darksiders so I can see more of this man's work!
Darksiders 3 got announced! :D
@@Garadares for real? Love that game. When I was into games
One of the best artist of all time. Love all his work! Can't believe he didn't like his X-Men stuff. So many artist stole his style. The GOAT!!!
FInish the damn! Battle chasers! love this guys one of the first guys that made me start drawing back in 97!
8 years later...
Pero mira con quien me encontre jajajaja
@Ledger Zavier shut up!
@@bargaintuesday812 nothing. wished it took his own work seriously.
How many issues are there now? I think I only have about 5 o 6
by far my favourite artist
Being humble about his work is part of the reason I like Joe so much. But he should be a little more positive about past work I think. We all grow and get better in every activity. The early work we do is a valuable stepping stone to the better work we do later.

I love his cartoony exaggerated style because it's simple, badass and is easy for the eye at the same time. Joe is still my no. 1 favorite artist ❤️
I can relate to this. i love how he says "manga" right without the accent.
luly lulyanka o lord
I miss the old days of this guy's art
I never appreciated art as much as Joe Mads iconic style. Darksiders art is so sick and colorful.
my fav artist by far....been enjoying his work since the first deadpool mini all the way to battlechasers and his lil runs on spidey & wolvie! keep it up man!
Mad Dog! Locked me on the XMen Alpha cover
i love him, he's honest and he drew Death so quickly!
awesome interviews, keep up the good work :)
God I love that sketchy rough style...it never fails to blow my mind.
The best, I love many, many artists in many mediums, Joe has always been my favorite, in a league of his own.
I love this artstyle, its one of my favorite parts of the game, it really inspires me :3
With how Joe's art is so filled to the brim with in-your-face, high octane energy and high testosterone awesomeness I didn't expect the man to be this laid-back and chill.
omg I just love his style!!!
God bless you, glad you enjoyed the tone.
...still read his uncanny x-men stuff. favorite artist.

FANTASTIC!
Your work kicks ass.
Darth Vadar taking off the mask is one of the best moments in movie history.
Seeing him drawing motivated me as fuck
He shouldn't be ashamed of his work on the X-Men. His take on it gave me life! Inspired me as an artist.
He left comics to pursue video games cuz obviously it pays better. He formed Vigil games and was the first to jump ship when it went bankrupt. Now he's like "oh gee video games didn't work out for me I guess I'll go back to doing comics." Fuck him.

this is completely awesome
i love how he makes noises when he draws, i used to do that when i took drawing a lot more seriously in the early 90s. i always wanted to master his style but that was impossible
One fantastic artist.
at the end, the artwork looks really cool. i want to see how what it looks like if he had time to render and color.
He's awesome. I wish one day to become a concept artist this good.
As far as his style not lending itself to certain genres he can get past it by doing semi loose pencils and letting a good inker put their touch to it to help it blend better.

Awesome work. He is my hero!
i love the work he did on Inhumans. the pages he drew were my favourite pages to read!
Always wanted to meet this guy!
i've noticed that most artists are very well spoken and intelligent. Joe is a perfect example
nice to see people at work. As I am as well some artist, love work in progress
He is a great designer!!
he's strokes are so stronger!!!
Joe Mad is my biggest inspiration source since i draw.
This man is absoluty incredible.
I wait this next projet with a big impatience.
PEACE :)
Great drawing of death and what he said about masked characters is so true.
Joe Mad is damn LEGEND!
People who saying that his artwork is shit then you haven't seen his artwork on comic books he is one amazing artist if not one of the best you will know if you seen some of his artwork in comics
Fernando Ramirez dude is a fucking legend with the pencil period!
Darksiders character aren't shit lol whoever said that is probably shit
Exactly! This guy totally expressed how I try and draw based on moods!
The one of the best :D
I love joe!!
This was brilliant, Nuff said.
I don't know what he's talking about. He's older work is awesome and imo, even better than what he does nowadays. Sure, he has improved and he's more skilled now, but I just prefer the manga influenced style.
he sounds so blazed
Ha, I have it hanging above my desk!
i love this awesome characters..inspired by you..
I've always been a fan of this guy, Surprised to learn he's gone into games though!!
Cool insight.Thanks
love Joe Mad.
he sounds high af
Maybe he is...
I think he had smoked like two blunts lol
it's hard being eloquent while you draw. For me personnally i can follow any conversation or audio podcast or whatever, but commenting as you do isn't easy at all.
I like his features, unique style very good designer
He sees it in his mind and he makes POOF and it is on the paper. Amazing
did he just drew a perfect circle like it was nothing?
Yeah, he did. You know his background, right?
It comes with practice. I'm not quite there yet, but when I warm up for drawing I fill a page with circles and ellipses.
that was NOT a perfect circle dude
Yea it's not like it's his job and he has spent hundreds of hours drawing.
lol perfect? btw, this guy is amazing
This guy is a genius!
....This gives me hope!
True, when you talk about characters with mask, I agree with that you say, I love you art, keep going Joe Madureira!
Will there be more of Joe Mad!? I, personally, hope! :)
Joe Mad has one of the most stylish art styles ever...I wanna know how to draw like that
Umm, practicing lol
Dude ripped a big bong hit before this interview
joe regan How can u tell?
He looks so humble and current, when he was one of the outstanding few concept draw influencers back in the 90's, globally speaking, when there was no commercial internet btw...
Damn i want that drawing. I also want to draw like Joe Mad. I used to draw but never liked how my stuff looked once I put it on paper. I had ideas like what Joe Mad does but i could never get it to look as awesome as his stuff.
Cuz u suck.
Still love that song at the end...
I didn't know that you yourself were the one filming and using the camera. Props.
He is one of the best artists from Brazil!
So he's Brazilian
Joe Mad is my Favorite Artist ever
I hope to see his work in future Darksiders games.
Wicked! I would like to say war reminds me a lot of Jackie from the Darkness with his long hair.
great video !
Best Artist indee World!!! You are a great inspiration MAD! :)
I still love his Age of Apocalypse & later X-Men comics! (More than even his Ultimates 3)
I'd like to see his special mechanical pencil.
I can generally relate to his embarrassment at his old work, but I cracked open the X-Cutioner's Song TPB recently (Joe wasn't in the creative teams for that crossover, just using it as a reference) and was reminded of the comic art trend at the time.

I LOVE YOU!!! You're amazing Madureira!!! Alongside Whilce Portacio!!!
I don't know if you saw the way his office was arranged, but I didn't have much of a choice.
I can't believe he said he didn't like his xmen work. That's what made everyone a fan to begin with. I hope he'll appreciate the fact we all like it.
What The Pencil! Nice work
He is one my favorite artist,I still all battle chaser comic.
Hes so good, it comes so natural to him lol.

Not for me
Master!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His is basically my dream job.
Being as Joe made him, he can say whatever he wants.
His comment about Darth Vader had me rolling, hella funny! xD LOLz "Ew...that's what he looks like under there?!"
I also read somewhere that for a third Darksiders to be made Darksiders 2 had to sell no less than 4 million copies, and in which case they would focus on more scope than scale for the third, "which had worked wonders for Batman Arkham City". catch him at the Cons, I have an awesome Vampirella sketch of his framed
What irks me is the fact that im in Cali and ive never been to ONE Comic Con. I wanna meet these kinds of artists
