Giovanni Giovanni. i feel you, as the movies progressed they went from Paul Walker-led movies into Ensemble movies. Roman has a much smaller role now than in 2F2F, so his strong suit (comedy relief) is what’s utilized the most. I agree w you tho, hopefully he’s used more in F&F9 since Hobbs & Shaw aren’t there anymore.
I agree with a lot of your points. I think this is why they brought in Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Heart. Not just for comical purpose, but to bring a different tone to the movie.
A better “situation” for Roman to use his talents would be to Talk Hobb’s brothers into trusting him again. Roman Definitely has experience in that area with Brian.... his friend who ‘ditched him’ to join the cops... Basically Hobbs could start a fight with his brothers and Roman points out that he literally has a massive family of Buff brothers. If he fights, he’s gunna lose. Then Roman talks them all into helping them, maybe he even makes them all laugh and they really like him. They could even ONLY decide to help for Roman and still Hate Hobbs. BUT then Roman makes the decision himself to go out of his way to convince the older Bro to forgive Hobbs and that Brothers are forever... could be a really touching reference to Paul Walker/Brian and him.
Yeah, Tyrese has an album. Tyrese has seven albums and five grammy nominations. Tyrese used to be that singer who thinks he can be an actor, now he's that actor with a singing career as a side hustle.
Fan of yours though I am, I actually disagree with the core conceit that the two don't contrast enough. I believe they do, typified in the scene where Hobbs takes the rappel line and Shaw takes the elevator. Hobbs and Shaw ARE both terse, brave men of action. But I think the movie does adequately display that despite those similarities, they contrast. Shaw is a precision scalpel, Hobbs is a baseball bat. Hobbs runs headfirst and goes by his gut, Shaw visibly thinks things through a little more and tries to be a step ahead. Hobbs is blue collar manly, Shaw is black tie suave. Hobbs sees Brixton rappel down he cable, and that's the only thing he sees. He zeroes in on that avenue and it's the only thing that crosses his mind. Shaw, while running alongside him, takes in the scene from a step back and spots an elevator literally five steps to the left that Hobbs completely failed to catch. It's a safer way down and gives him a vantage point to shoot from. It's shown both in the previous two movies and this one, Shaw is very much prone to "cheating" in fights, most notably against Hobbs in Furious 7 -- Hobbs barrels him through glass walls and throws him across the room. In turn, Shaw uses improvised weapons like glass shards and light fixtures, takes cheap shots at Hobbs' neck and groin, and then just resorts to explosives when the fight turns in Hobbs' favor. They bear some similarities, but Hobbs is all heart, guts and grit. Shaw is smooth(er), tactical and pragmatic.
To add on, the two of them have very distinct fighting styles in my opinion. Hobbs is very much a brute force punching guy, relying solely on his physical advantage. Shaw, on the other hand, fights a lot more elegantly, kinda like what we see from a kung fu movie. This might be the first video where I almost completely disagree with Nando, but it did make me think more about the relationship between the two and to some extent they really are quite similar. Also, I hate Roman, can't stand him at all, so if this was a Hobbs and Roman movie I wouldn't have gone and see it.
I think you just convinced me to go check this movie out because honestly, I was still bitter about Shaw killing Han and they still forgave him didn't feel earned, at least not enough to me, but now I see how this could be a lot of fun to watch.
I think the big problems with this film is that they steer away from practical effects, the editing never lets a moment sit and that the Duo never suffer a loss because of the character flaws of not working together. Your video hits it on the head.
I disagree on this one. You overlooked the most important part: Nobody would hire Roman for this mission. Nobody. It just makes no sense. Hobbs and Shaw are exactly the guys you'd need. They don't go along well, which is part of the concept, and they do things quite differently, which makes it interesting.
What if you have a scene like a heist movie where Hobbs is trying to reach out to all the members of The Fast Family but they’ve all got their own thing going on and the only one who has nothing going on is Roman so Hobbs just goes with it.
Another advantage of having Roman would be, all the dialogue they could have when both of them are trying to impress Hattie. You know that would happen. She could still be Shaw's sister. Maybe at the beginning when she's running from Brixton he incapacitates Shaw, so Shaw calls in Hobbs and Roman to help her because he can't. Anyway, great rewrite!
Dude, this is a film where the Rock, playing an ordinary guy, manages to hold onto a moving tow truck whilst grabbing onto a chain tied to an also moving helicopter. I don't think this film thought about anything this seriously 😂
Just one little problem, it not a buddy cops movie. I just don't get how you see it as a buddy cops movie when it's clearly an action movie. The girl was almost along with Hobbs and Shaw after they got together, and she is highly involved even since. So it's clearly not a buddy cops movie, instead two main characters, we got three. Sure, it might draw some inspiration from buddy cops movie, but deep down it still all about the action.
I find it hilarious that people dont know about tyrese as a singer and he was a *major RNB singer in the 90s and early oughts.* Thats why he was cast in 2 fast.
I disagree. I think what you've described is just another Kevin Hart + The Rock rip off. I think this pairing is less a buddy cop movie and more "Expendables" - let's-just-kick-everyone's-ass type of movie.
I think it comes down to managing expectations. I didn’t think it was supposed to be a buddy cop movie really, I thought it was supposed to be a high-quality Sharknado with fists and cars replacing the sharks.
But all (or most) of the traits that they share are traits that would conflict with one another. There cannot be 2 toughest guys in the room, there can't be 2 people who want to single handedly have control of the situation and that's why I think it works to an extent
Me, having not seen this one or any other Fast and Furious movies: ah, yes I will listen for 20 minutes to Nando telling my why this one bald guy would be a better buddy-cop pairing to the first bald guy, instead of that bald guy that we got.
Dude they contrived a way to have one car fly from one tall building to another, I think they can come up with a reason why Roman is the only available character to help The Rock
Probably because Hobbs tried calling up everyone in the crew but Dom and Letty are still settling, Tej and Ramsey are busy on some hacking jobs, and Roman has nothing on his schedule other than working out and being a show off.
Or, if you wanna keep Hobbs AND Shaw, make it a running joke that everybody thinks they're basically the same person and them being in denial for [insert reason here] only to be proven wrong time and time again. They should be working not just well, but too well together. Instead of constantly squabbling, they should be trying to resist a budding bromance. Have the sister be the foil to their dynamic duo. It would definitely be a twist on the buddy cop genre.
Nando is crazy, it's amazing. So much fun. If you want to see The Rock and Jason Statham insult each other in colorful ways for 2 hours with car chases and explosions in between, this movie has your back.
I love how, no matter what character you are reading a line from, I always hear it in the actor's voice. I really want to see these scenes read by The Rock and Tyrese.
Nando, you should pitch them on this. We're about to be 20 years deep in this, time and money can heal this especially if they know how excited we are for it!
2Fast is my second favorite behind Fast 1 because I just LOVE the way Brian and Roman play off each other. You could say they already did the buddy-cop Furious movie, it was 2Fast. I hate that Roman just turned into a caricature of himself (like many of the rest of the cast) in Five.
I'd accuse you of getting paid off by Tyrese but he's made it very clear in his own videos that money's rather tight at the moment. So I appreciate you injecting some charity into your creative endeavors. Bless your soul, Nando!
I watched this not expecting it to be a buddy cop movie. I was hoping for (and got) a dumb fun action flick. If anything I liked how it didn't just default to the two opposites having to work together - it was two guys trying to one up another, with only minor differences. For clarity I haven't watched the other films so I don't have that mindset of "these two characters have already done this".
If the film doesn't have Deckard, what's the link to Hattie? Is she still part of the plotline? Part of her reason for being there is the whole "Shaw's sister" position
As soon as you mentioned that you wanted to change shaw i knew you were gonna mention roman I've been wanting to see a movie with these two since fast five
The entire Fast and the Furious franchise is built on people not remembering things that happened in the previous movies. They are some of the dumbest movies of the 21st century.
Honestly? I’ve never disagreed with Nando, but this time? I think I do. I think the conflict coming from similarities between the characters is not only more realistic but an interesting twist. I like most of Hobbs and Shaw. It wasn’t perfect, not a FandF movie really but not bad
Highlighting how Hobbs & Shaw are too similar just makes me appreciate how airtight and effective the buddy cop dynamic is in 21/22 Jump Street. Schmidt & Jenko are perfectly opposed characters that have something valuable to teach the other, while still providing enough tension for actual drama as well as maintain comedic stakes.
Haddie would have to be rewritten a bit for this to work since shes related to shaw and his refusal to give up his sister is what leads to the 3rd act but other than that, hobbs and roman sounds great
Actually, the similarity is what made this film work imo. The tension is created by the fact that they're both exactly the same which causes them to clash.
This video is a great analysis of what I thought was a pretty glaring issue of Hobbs and Shaw too, and also of what the characters are lacking, but this rework also has one massive and glaring issue too. It involves Tyrese Gibson.
@@akilw.3360 this movie sort of follows the same premise as Captain America Winter Soldier, where two people have to stop a world ending event and they fight an enhanced killing maniac who has a connection with one of the characters. Shaw gets in the elevator purely to annoy Hobbs. He was given an instruction by someone he didn't like and instead of arguing he pranks him. " No one tells me what to do" is one of the funniest lines in that film because its Shaw just being petty. Also he doesn't " take an elevator" he brakes it so it hurtles to the ground faster then the Rock then slams the breaks on at the last minute and that's the point of this film. Hobbs and Shaw are both brawny action stereotypes ... That's the joke! Two characters with different traits might make for a more coherent film but that's not the point. Its supposed to be a dumb larger then life fun action film. Look at Ragnarok. Thor and the Hulk have similar roles in their universe but if you took out the Hulk and subbed in Ant Man you wouldn't end up with a better film. And I honestly think there are enough differences in the two leads actions and performances to make them stand out in there own ways. I do agree that the character development in fast 8 wasn't handled well. What are your thoughts on this
