How can you tell which shock has gone bad before taking them out?
I think you should change them together.
Disconnect the shock absorber from one side. Start pulling out the piston rod. If it moves freely, then it's bad. But in most cases it's not bad, it just needs to be serviced. Smear some fat lubricant to the leather piece that sits inside and hugs the rod when it enters the piston. Also smear the rod itself with some fat. This way, you'll increase friction and it won't move freely anymore.
Change them both- in any case, they come in pairs. You can tell by bouncing the drum with your hand- if it bounces easily & carries on without being damped, one or more shock absorbers is bad.
