LG/Kenmore Washer Vibrates/Shakes? Shock Absorber

  • Опубліковано 26 вер 2011
  • This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the shock absorbers on Kenmore front loading washing machines with model prefix 796 and LG front loading washing machines. The most common reason for replacing the shock absorbers is if the washer is vibrating more than usual and one or more of the shock absorbers is broken or worn out; they should all be replaced at the same time.

    No need to remove the front panel, at least for the lg machine. You can access all 3 shocks from the rear. Depressing the the plastic pins with a 12 mm socket is actually easier from the rear because you have full vision of the rear of the pins.
    An adjustable jaw pliers is your best friend to squeeze the pins fully back in. Apply some soft soap or oil on the the pins before reinserting.

    Thanks to this video, I did it, but, I replaced the 3 shocks from the rear side. Is not really easy, but I didn't have to remove the front panel. 😀

    Instead of replacing the shocks, after I took them out, I modified them and ended the out of balance error. The problem I found is the shocks have a designed free play section of about an inch. There is a little spacer inside there that is not the full size of the cylinder it is in. In this, the dampening is not in control. I took the shocks apart and added an additional spacer to eliminate the free play of the shock. I just used o-rings from an o-ring kit I had. Not my first choice, but it worked. After doing this to all 3 shocks the problem was gone. I was getting the error about every load and especially larger loads. Instead of using o-rings, if you could find or make a piece of rubber that is cylindrical and has a hole in it, it may work better but the o-rings do work. This is on the front load washer version.

      Did you happen to make a video of this? If not, would you mind explaining in a little more detail? I would like to try this fix. There is a white plastic piece and an orange plastic piece in each shock from my machine, and I can't figure out exactly how you did this. Did you pry off the white plastic end of the shock, or insert O ring through that end piece? Thanks for your time if you answer.

    • @todwilk
      @todwilk Рік тому +1

      @@trustno1903 If I remember correctly, the orange piece is the spacer? That is what was too short, allowing the free play. I increased the length of that with o-rings. I don't remember how I took it apart. But I remember thinking I was going to buy new ones and figured if I broke it nothing was lost. So whatever you have to separate to get the o-rings on. It is still working without issue today.

    I managed to change both on my washing machine by removing back panel and tilting it at like a 45° angle and removing them from underneath. One was definitely gone, they are like an open type damper with felt inside and one of the bits of felt had worn so it was plastic hitting metal which was making the racket. Different type uprated shocks fitted, washing machine sounds like new again. So thanks for the vid, was a simple enough job, took me about half hour to change a pair.

    Make your own spring tool! I bought the spring expansion tool, but this little tool I invented in 5 minutes worked better, at least on an LG. If you take off the front panel, it will make your life easy. Take a worn flat-head screwdriver, and cut a shallow notch a millimeter from the edge. Now put the hacksaw in the notch at a 45 degree angle and widen the notch so it is big enough to accept the spring. Put the spring end in the notch, lift it in place, and to disengage it just lift up the handle of the screwdriver. It went in so easily with this tool I couldn't believe it! (It was the second time I installed the boot seal, and the first time I really struggled without this tool.)

    My machine was vibrating roughly during the spin cycle, and the boot seal on the door was misshapen and leaking. It turned out that one of two hangers for the drum (Main suspension spring) was broken. I replaced it and replaced all three shock absorbers. Apparently if you move a front-loader without putting in the transport bolts it ruins the shocks, which then ruins the spring. I removed the front panel, which made getting at all the shocks easier. See my comment below to make your own spring tool. Otherwise see comments below mine on removing the shocks from the rear panel.

    • @xex2kok
      @xex2kok 3 роки тому +1

      They explained that if you were replacing the back, remove the back. If you are replacing the front one then remove the front. A more studious mind might even consider that they only showed the rear absorber because removal and install is the same for both once the panels are off.

    It definitely could be the shock absorbers. There are three in your machine. You would have to open up the machine and see if they are damaged. Your model is laid out basically the same as this one. You need a different part number though - #1267435. I would suggest going to the repair help section of our website (link in the description). If you put your model number in there and select your symptom, you'll see the most likely causes to your problem.

      Great advice! I replaced the front shocks using Paul's advice to access the shocks from the bottom of the unit when it was on its side. The back one was easier to get to with the rear panel off, which is easily done and much less complicated than the disassembly in this video.

      I replaced all three shocks without even tilting the washer. I only removed the back cover. I think tilting the washer and doing work would be more difficult and more risky. I pinched the pins by fingers and pushed it out . I had to use channel locks at the highest latch to push the pins back in once the shock was installed. I have the drawers so it would have be ena huge job to remove and then tilt the washer etc. Changing without tilting requires removing back cover, a good light inside and patience otherwise its not difficult at all. LG washer.

    Hi, my washer shakes like crazy, and jumps around, this started happening recently after we moved, I forgot to use the transport bolts to prevent the drum from moving. Both the dampers seem ok, and so do the springs on top. What else could be wrong, the washer/dryer is leveled and it happens with every single load on the centrifuge cycle. Its an LG washer/dryer front load, much like the one on this video.

      Shocks limit travel. A new/good shock should be very hard to move back and forth by hand. The spring holds the basket up, the shocks stabilize the basket and take away some of the springiness. I pulled my shocks out and all 3 had 1-2" of effortless travel, meaning they are definitely worn out.
