@@Nmac-the difference is that before, people had to use the voices with the music filtered out, which made them far lower quality. Now we can have the voices in higher quality.

Yea, its the original animation for the previous dialogue, but they re-recorded Marc Graue's voice again with the edited line and paused its animation halfway.
I always thought it was because of loading times.

dear god. not only does the beta intro have no music to allow unfiltered versions of the final voiceline dialogue, but bowser actually has a spoken voice. this is a premium supply drop for UA-cam poop makers.
Surely the bowser voice is just Mario doing an impression of him. That's definitely good enough for poop material, but I can't imagine a guy who laughs like that also talking like that

wouldn't get my hopes up. The instructions mention 7 hotels, meaning they probably already ditched the idea and hadn't rewritten the intro yet.
@@ViddyOJames We don't know how long it had been since that decision was made though. Even if the lost hotel isn't here, it doesn't mean that the cutscene(s) were never animated. The idea of eight hotels did get far enough to make it to voice acting, after all. That's assuming those potential cutscenes ever got far enough to be implemented though.
@@Hijiri_MIRACHION Unfortunately, if the level was cut, it's likely the animation isn't on disc. The animations are stored in L*_av.rtf files numbered from 0 - 8, but missing a number 6.
0 is the demo level, and 1 - 8 (without 6) make up the 7 levels of the released game.
If there's an L6_av.rtf file on the disc then that should contain the missing animations and level screens

It appears the “enclosed instruction book” line was just haphazardly slapped together since Mario's movements and lip syncing are timed with the “press button one” animation.

This is actually an insane find. Officially isolated dialogue, different takes, Mario's "button two" animation, and Bowser's CD-i voice. Definitely gonna have a field day with these in poops.

I just realized that during the "Enclosed instruction booklet" part, the mouths were never resynced from the beta audio. He's still mouthing "Press button one" in the retail version.

Very interesting intro difference. It's so weird hearing it without the music too.
The part about 8 hotels actually does not surprise me: In the game level files, one number is skipped: Hotel 6, it's going from Hotel 5 to 7 in the internal numbering scheme.
The help audio is actually in the final game as is, but is an unused leftover.
Can't wait to have access to the dumped disc image, because I'm definitely down to do some extra checks inside the files.

The cutting room floor does not lie after all. Maybe it was supposed to be read by Mario's VA in the final but decided against it, unlike the Link/Zelda Games, where it was read by Link and Zelda's VA's in their own games.
@@madden8021Definitely sounds like placeholder audio recorded by a developer of the game, it reads like it was eventually supposed to be dubbed over but was eventually cut altogether due to time constraints. Probably why the segment where he alludes about pressing button 1 in order to get into the help guide is chopped up in the retail release to just reference the “enclosed instruction book”

Most of the voices anyway, but now most of the voices are finally in a clean format. Mario reading the letter and him mentioning the "Enclosed Instruction Book" are missing, but in exchange we get Bowser's previously unheard CD-i voice and am entirely new line for Mario.
You know you have seen way too many YTPs when you instantly notice Bowser says "eight hotels" instead of seven.

Reminds me of a book that few copies were printed and a mentor told me to keep on the lookout, he has one shared for his entire department and when found was sold for unreasonable prices.

It turns out Bowser CAN talk, after all!
For those complaining that he hasn't dumped it yet, I have to point out the the CD-i uses the CD-i format (Or Green Book) for it's discs rather than the common CD-ROM (Or Yellow Book) used in every other CD based console. Nearly all of consumer grade CD and DVD computer drives can't read CD-i disks like they can with CD-ROMs.
So it's less of a "I'm not archiving it until I'm popular" and more of a "Could you share this with others who know how to rip/archive CD-i discs?"

They've had Bowser's voice in the CD-I Beta!?!? No wonder we never heard him say stuff in the retail version, only his laughing sound.

Notably the help dialogue, other than also existing in the final game, does specify "7 koopaling hotels". Although the intro did say there's 8, I feel like I can't tell whether or not the missing 6th hotel, presumably Iggy's, will be in this build.
I am incredibly eager to see the YTPs that get made from this.

It always felt awkwardly abrupt when it asks the player to check out the instruction book. I guess now we know why.

Honestly, I kind of like the beta opening cutscene better. It's nice to hear Bowser say something, and to me, having a "help" option kind of flows a little better than just saying "look at the enclosed instruction booklet," even if saying "press button one or two" is a bit more long-winded. Personally, I would still keep the "It's from Bowser!" line from the final release, but the rest of the newly discovered beta lines kind of work. I'm not entirely sure why these things were changed for the final release.

As cool as it is for YTPs to utilize the new mario and bowser dialogue, I'd love to hear one incorporate the placeholder dialogue, too.
I grew up on those early UA-cam poop days of the cd-i games, and have become very passionate of game preservation and its community over the years so seeing this made me doubly happy 😊
The "inclosed instuction book" line really does feel like such a last minute decision when put next to the beta having in ingame choice haha

it's only now that I realise that these cutscenes have been in my head for well over 10 years and hearing new voice lines threw me into a loop
I've watched a video that has all of mario's lines read by the tutorial guy on the beta, so mario's VA was supposed to record those lines but for whatever reason it didn't go into the final game.
So I wasn't the only one!

@@Blankult Ah! While I watched like two/three years ago while getting a lot of Hotel Mario related videos because of the memes and because I liked the OST
I am not sure to be more surprised at the fact that a Hotel Mario prototype of all things resurfaced or the fact that you found it at a thriftstore.
Another difference with the title screen is the quality of the music. Retail is in mono while beta is stereo and of a much clearer audio quality. I assume the beta version is the one that was taken from the composer’s studio before any compression was done to fit it on the CD.
I hope there's more differences in the cutscenes in the upcoming parts of this discovery. Just the opening alone had me speculating
Fascinating find! That tutorial dialogue at 7:30 is still in the final game but unused. With the beta's early dialogue and the presence of a tutorial, I'm speculating either the devs decided against the final game having a tutorial or this is perhaps a kiosk demo where an instruction book probably wouldn't have been available. Either way, I will be sticking around to see more!
Huh, so the "enclosed instruction book" line reuses the original animation for the previous dialogue. What they did was re-recorded Marc Graue's entire line from beginning to end (since you can tell some differences in the inflection) and just stopped the animation halfway giving us the iconic one finger mouth open looking at camera pose we all know and love.
Seeing new Hotel Mario content in 2024 issss an experience to say the least

Wgat;s interesting is that the note mentions 8 hotels instead of the normal 7. There's only 6 Koopalings and Bowser in the final game, totalling 7 levels, but it looks like Iggy was actually planned to have his hotel at one point. According to TCRF, there's a level missing between Ludwig and Wendy's levels, so that adds up.
Some other discoveries people have made about the game that are listed on that page are also consistent with this porto; the unused "help" audio is still in the game but can't be played normally, and the French dub is missing Bowser's echo.

I think everyone knew the intended line wasn't actually "Gay Luigi", it's just funnier to pretend that's what he's saying, much like SM64's "so long gay Bowser"

One interesting thing that I noticed is that while in the intro cutscene Bowser mentions 8 hotels, the placeholder track of ‘help’ dialogue contrastingly mentions 7 hotels. Very interesting.
I don’t want to make and assumptions as I’m no sort of video game development expert, but I imagine that 8 hotels were planned and Mario’s voice lines were recorded early on while this decision was in place. Later it was changed to 7 hotels, which would explain why it’s only a placeholder voiceover for the help screen which would’ve been implemented later on.

I just realized something. The retail release still had that control cutscene animation, but it was just dubbed over.
The alternate dialogue really hammers home, for me at least, how Mario in the retail release is just unwilling to explain how his own game works.
