Mark Whitworth meh, haven’t played it in awhile. Might try it once again..
When I was younger, my mum paid for a Club Penguin membership for me (I think it was for a month). Little did we know it was recurring. Being the naïve little kid I was, I kept playing with membership beyond my supposed limit and eventually Mum realized Disney was sucking up the contents of her bank account. And we weren't exactly well-off back then (which is why you beg your mum to buy you membership for a poxy little game, of course). And I was getting mad at a guy for charging $4.99 for a premium for his game. But that one was quite clearly low-budget, so it seemed pretty natural he wanted to get more money out of it so he could develop it. He was making the game himself, after all (unless he actually had a band of people helping him but took all the credit). Disney, on the other hand, has a budget that could probably help a great deal (where money can help) in sorting out the world's problems and still have enough to buy everyone in the team a Mercedes and a first-class trip to Barbados. What do they spent it on? A totally shitty-looking game that people quit because they can't do anything without buying membership for and their parents won't "buy you more membership - you've had it for three years". You may say Disney put a lot of effort into the game, but really, it looks like any other virtual world game, apart from the fact the other virtual world games don't have a great big LOCK on everything that you're forced to open using your five-dollar bills. And, to top it off, they also removed free trials at one point (I dunno if they're back yet), so you couldn't even "get the experience of a member". So, all in all, Disney, a 1/5 from me.
So now I feel like I've crossed the border for typing comments on UA-cam channels by writing a fucking essay about how bad CPI is. Congratz, Lily.

I remember back in the original CP it started getting a bit like this towards the end. They started locking everything behind memberships: levels of the minigames, clothes, event rooms. I already had a membership so it didn't bother me as much, but what really got me to leave was when all the parties became advertisements for Disney's latest show, movie, or acquisition. At that point the corporatism got to me.
Tbf that was about when the player base was dying and they were trying to keep revenue up to keep the game running
The same game today would most certainly be as money grubbing even if they didn't have to though
That was my main gripe too. Even if the crossover events were fun and pretty in-depth they were all meant to sell you on something. But what was even worse was the fact that there was a party EVERY SINGLE MONTH for the MAJORITY of the month and they all capitalized on FOMO tactics. Nobody had any chance to breathe and enjoy regular ol' Club Penguin for more than maybe a week at best. And I'm willing to bet that didn't help with the game's longevity.

I keep on preaching in CPR - CPI is a game that teaches children segregation: without a membership you have nothing. When CPI was fairly new, the non members had no clothing items.
