Just changed mine - as you described. The previous owner had changed it before and tightened the hell out of those two 8 mm bolts. I had to put the Vulcan death grip on then to get them out! Thanks for the vid!

I also have a 2005 TRX650. I bought it cheap earlier this year and it clattered like crazy at idle and would change as it warmed up a bit. I knew these engines were a bit noisy anyway, but I took a gamble and brought it home. I set the engine to TDC, and pulled the old tensioner. I installed a new manual tensioner as per instructions and just like that, 90% of the noise was gone. Those factory tensioners will fail and the manual tensioner is the way to go. My machine has around 4500 miles. Most racing machines that use tensioners are all manual type so they don't fail and scatter the engines. I baby my machines so hopefully mine will give me years more use before it retires.

I haven’t tried the manual tensioners. May be irrational but I’ve always been afraid of the vibrations loosening up the lock bolt on those manual tensioners. These rincons are great as long as you take care of them.

I have to do this on mine, and it looks tricky to get an 8mm tool in there. If you pull one tensioner out and put a new one in, isn't there practically zero chance the chain can skip a tooth if you aren't rotating the engine? I ask because I would like to skip the step of first getting to TDC before swapping the tensioner.

How many miles did you have on it before you replaced the tensioner.
