This is Why You Suck at Guitar lesson P90X: Your Pinch Harmonics Suck

- Because you demanded it! It's time to make your guitar squeal like some unfortunate soul who wandered onto some banjo-playing backwoods maniac's property. I am sick and tired of you not being able to pull off a decent pinch harmonic. How else are you going to score that ladyboy you met a Hot Topic if you can't get your pinches worked out, brah? You've got your sweeps worked out (thanks to me), so now all you need to become the reigning King of the Ball Pit is the perfect pinch. And i'm about to show you how to do it.
I ought to be making millions. You're going to get this free lesson on how to master the artificial harmonic by getting your tone right, working that pick, learning a weird trick involving Cindy Crawford's beauty mark, and much more. You will have Zakk Wylde weeping with jealously in no time.
Let me know what you suck at and i will show you! Leave me a comment or send me a message and we will work it out. And don't forget, i teach one on one Skype guitar lessons for a reasonable rate (first born child) with flexible hours. Let's get rippin.
I still suck at guitar, but with this lesson, I've started sucking less.
"Dude does it just suck being you?" - Douglas "Swish" Reemer
I really couldn't get it until you gave me that aunt Julie metaphor. Thank you.
She never learns.

I love this guy

My aunt is called Theresa, will this work anyway?
Only if you tap into your inner stepdad
how are you not a stand up comedian?
الحياة في بريطانيا well, i mainly stay seated or reclining most of the time. that's the trouble.
This video was so much funnier because I actually have an Aunt Julie
hahaha what a skank!!!
i actually have an uncle ben x]
"Looks like your stepmom's muffin top." I'm using that line at some point. I'm sure in my eagerness to use it, it won't be appropriate for the moment I choose, but I'll be damned if I'm letting that one get away!
Did you use it ??
Obrad Drakulic haha yea he did and died. Wrong place wrong time.
TheConTraDemOn oh man.Too bad
That got me too 😂😂😊😊😂😂
Any updates?
Even if I never learn how to do a pinch harmonics your humor makes it worthwhile to visit your lessons
***** thanks Bill!
3:12 the most important close up demo ever. Took me about two minutes to be able to do my first ever pinch harmonic note. Uncle Ben is one of the, if not the best guitar teacher on UA-cam.
I SUCK at shredding, my parents put me up for adoption cuz of it, I wanna be able to play fast and most importantly clean, can you please make a lesson about good shredding practices? btw I love your covers and lessons, so helpful :)
hahaha thanks so much, dude! yeah man i will definitely do a video on practicing to get your chops up. Hit me up for some Skype lessons sometime!!!
Ben Eller How many cans of Toad's Cream Chipped Beef / Corn Beef Hash Combo cans = 1 of skype lesson? Obviously 1 of paper = 4 of coin
That was a painful lesson teacher, like you taught my aunt Julie
Mike L hahaha she never learns!
Mike L classic Julie
My Aunt Julie says she never felt a thing. She likes a bit of girth, does aunt Julie
mellowb1rd that's no lie
this is DEFINITELY my favorite guitar learning video series. thanks man! some of these things you've done were techniques I wasn't even doing at all, let alone wrong.
for some reason I can do these easily on the high strings but what I have trouble with is the low strings
That’s because the low strings are thicker and vibrate harder than the higher strings
Funny I’m the opposite
that aztec history lesson O_O
hang around homeschoolers like me, you'll learn something!
I wish I had seen this 5 years ago. I had to learn pinch harmonics on my own, and it took me nearly a year to finally get it down, and now it's an integral part of my playing style. Had this video been around when I was 16 it'd have saved me tons of headaches. Awesome tutorial, bro. Stay Awesome and Rock On!
Mal Maelstrom "if i could turn back time" - Cher. Brilliance.
Ben Eller damn straight! XD You're a brilliant instructor, man. Keep it up.
Great explanation, and an awesome refresher for me. Sometimes I battle picking too hard, trying to force those squealies out. Quick click on this and I've got more harmonics than I know what to do with. You're hilarious, too, by the way. Cheers.
RainbowSlashLP cheers, thank you!!!
New to your channel but you're the only guitarist who's lessons I can sit through and enjoy and you are much easier to under stand. I've been fucking around with metal for the first time in my 3 years of playing and my pinch harmonics were crap lousy lol next stop sweeps. Thanks again bro
Ben - Love your "this is why you suck" theme. True for most of us, good wake up call and terrific tips and tricks on getting to the next level. cheers, mate.
Uncle Ben I have been binge watching your videos. You are the best teacher I have ever seen. Thank you so much for all your help in my journey to not suck at guitar. I am forever subscribed.
Hey man thank you so much!!!
I couldn't for the life of me figure out pinch harmonics until I saw your video, and now I can't play anything else! we need a video explaining how to stop!
This 8 year old video actually does an amazing job at explaining the mechanics about pinch harmonics. I been played for 10 years and struggle with it, but this video has helped me visualize and understand what needs to be done and why,
Thanks for Pinch Harmonic's 102!....oh, and thanks for outing my sweet aunt Julie
Great Video! You sir, have the gift of Zazz. I will subscribe meow. A pleasure to watch! Thank you for sharing!!!!
The videos keep getting funnier and better. Keep it up Ben :D
thanks Deylan! share with the masses!
8 yr old video and ONE thing you demonstrated that made it click was a flat wrist and flat pick. I always angle my wrist thinking that'll help my thumb touch
This is seriously the best pinch harmonics tutorial video I've seen. Likr Holy fuck
thanks Victor! and hit me up for Skype lessons!
Definitely
I finally got it! Thank you! I was actually being too soft and not getting enough thumb in there, but I noticed how much thumb you were putting in and how you sort of drove it all the way to the next string and that helped a ton!
aaaaaaaaaaand i've just learned pinch harmonics! fucking god damnit you are the best! It was the only technique that i was strugling with
Martex huzzah!
Bro this is 6 years old. It was in my recommended. Glad I stumbled by.
watching this was amazing because my Aunts name is Julie
Trenton Craig lol same
For someone who just started watching your channel about a year ago this video is a real gem!😂
Ben I'd like to see a video on vibrato, too many players out there that don't use the vibrato properly.
bad vibrato ruins lives, its true!
There are a million guys doing this on the internet, this guy is one of the best! Thank you for posting these.
Thanks again, Ben! How about a really in-depth lesson on vibrato? Some people just...don't get it! And maybe your form of enlightening would be perfect :D
coming up!
Ben, you are a genius my dude. That dot trick totally rocks. I been struggling for a while with pinch h's and after your tutorial within 3-4 tries I was nailing them 100%! Insta sub man. Rock on!
Thanks so much for these vids man, really funny and entertaining and inspiring to clean up my technique and get better!
thanks a lot Sam! Glad you enjoy!
I was browsing reddit for tips on pinch harmonics and this video was suggested. I'm so mad with myself because I've been struggling for years with this, and then I watched this video and I can do them whenever and where-ever now..
Well, thanks!
"Watch Roadhouse with Mom", awesome!
Chuck Sanchez if i don't nobody will!
Definitely explains why my pinch harmonics are so inconsistent. I've been using a slightly different angle where more of the thumb sticks out and it's mainly the tip of the thumb exposed. I'll have to try your way when I get the amp fired up tonight.
Why did I find "the other dingus teachers" so hilarious?
Nice job, the most detailed lesson I have come across on pinch harmonics.
did my first pinch harmonic, thanks !
cheers Luke, i thought i heard a distant squealing upon the wind!
Super awesomeness ben, your helping fools like me get better. I signed up for your patreon yesterday.
Seeing him trying to do it on the acoustic was hilarious. 🤣
Great Vid!!! This is by far the best instruction on Pinch Harmonics Ive seen...Great work.
I can do good pinch harmonics on the higher stings quite comfortably, however I can't quite get them to sound right on the lower ones (like in the introduction to Slipknot's Psychosocial) I can sort of get it, but no where near as awesome as Jim Root/Mick Thomson makes it sound. Any tips?
+Nya Selio yea me too. I also make too much "noise" when do a pinch harmonic (maybe it's because my palmute technique sucks?). jeezz
+Nya Selio Had same issues aswell a while back... figured that lower strings have a "wider" vibration path, meaning i had to be more gentle and quicker. That sorted it out for me.
+Nya Selio Bends and vibratos will get it better. Try practicing to get it closer to the bridge. Psychosocial was really what made me spend time learning it.
I never thought I'd get pinch harmonix as fast as this. Thanks man you seriously helped me get this down
Gabe Pennington thanks Gabe!
Damnit, Ben! I love your videos!
Dammit i love your comments!
Another good way to look at it is to strum with the pick and that dotted part of your thumb simultaneously. Upstroke pinches can be done in number of ways depending on whether or not you bite your nails. It gave a blister and now I have to wait for it to heal.
Hope those bodies are alright, man.
Bart Alleman bodies?
Ben Eller good point
thanks man i was kinda confused on these but now i got em! just gotta practice them more. super informative, clear, and i laughed my ass off a couple times. SUBSCRIBED
AwesomeBill FromDawsomeville thanks dude, and good luck!
"That your stepdad listens to"
My aunt Julie said he's actually my real dad...
Probably the best lesson on pinch harmonics on UA-cam !! Thanks
Andres Suarez thanks Andres!!!
Great video, very informative and damned funny. Thanks
got to give you props on the dot on the thumb. Literally change my whole way of thinking.
awesome! glad to hear it Douglas, thanks!
Excellent explanation.
MattWhatsGoinOn thanks!
the best and clearest baby steps illustrations.. thanks so much. The principle seems simple but I can see it takes a lot of practising .. a bit like learning how to whistle . I will get there one day ... :)
I understand exactly how it works and I've tried everything but still just killing the note every time I want to break this thing in half lol
K6-MaD practice
Thanks hella much! I watched few other pinch harmonic tutorial videos before this, and I learned nothing. Everyone just says, "Let your thumb touch the string after picking."
WTH! I can learn that by reading words, defeating whole purpose of making video tutorial. But you showed various angles and walked me through step by step! Just like how tutorial should be. Thank you so much!
Thanks a ton, big boy. Say hi to my mom later tonight.
Can we get a lesson on TONE? I know it's goddamn subjective, but...how do we get that delicious metal tone you used in the "I, Dementia" solo? Maybe a run-through of the typical modeling amp settings (i.e. bass, mids, treble, presence, gain, OD channels, reverb, ect.) because all of us 12 year olds convinced mommy and daddy to buy us Line 6 spider amps...and why we don't scoop our mids, what all those silly knobs mean and do, ect. I just want a metal tone so daddy will let me back in the house again :(
1. learn to play
2. get good tone
3. ????
4. Profit
Jay J good call! most of us could learn a thing or two about tone!
The moment I went from not being able to do it, to being able to do it, was when I realized you don’t need to pick super hard to get a pinch harmonic. I was digging into the string with my pick whenever I went in for a PH, and all of a sudden I tried picking really softly and it was like nigh and day, now I can do it perfect. Pick very softly and follow through with your thumb.
Holy fuck when I first saw you I thought you where that guy from jackass
Nice explanation Ben. Thanks for the upload!
Will this work for my banjo?
I don’t have time to read all the comments so I don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but the first player I heard doing this was Roy Buchanan back around 1965. Don’t know where he got it but I think he may have invented it. If he didn’t, he sure as hell made them a key element in his style.
Very indepth tutorial despite you keep making fun of everybody's aunt julie. Thanks man!
hahaha well she earned it at least!
Thank you Ben for helping me I'm a new guitar player and need all the help I can get. So thank you again. You Rock!!!!
alternate picking..
just efficient clean picking through the strings..
ive got myself into a bad habit transcribing pieces so the shredding is done with 3 notes per string and i suck at it.. can't get a clean or good sound even when using the neck pick up and a shit load of distortion.. my friends say im good but i feel as though that has given me a false sense of confidence in my shreds.. help me!!
i hope you understand what i mean if you read this.
absolutely!!! Alt picking through scales is tough shit. Good call, i will cover this!
thank you i appreciate it!!
Synyster2536 it's been 4 years, you probably found the solution by now but Incase not, it's probably a case of playing too fast and not slowing down, try slowing down, it helped me so much nail every single nots as clean as I want
Cheers Ben for an in-depth informative lesson.
do alternate picking next pls yhanks
I sure will! Be sure to watch ALL of Cracking the Code on Troy Grady's channel, that's my religion!
God damn it, thanks! Grady's channel and yours are the best on the net /m/
Thanks.... I needed that! I like the dry delivery too. Way cool...
If I make my guitar squeal, does that mean it's having an orgasm like Aunt Julie with 2 Live Crew?
In all seriousness, I hope you keep up with the lesson videos. I like being told how much I suck at guitar (because I do).
hahahaha yes it does!!! if it screams like Julie, you're doing it right! thanks for watching!
LOL did he say king of guitar center? lol I know what he means
we all know that guy!
Man, You're really awesome. Kinda nostalgic how you referenced a steady pinch-harmonic with a dial tone. Can't remember last time I needed to hear one. Keep up with these videos man.
your vibrato sucks lesson?
aaaa Bear, now we're talking! I hate some bad vibrato!!
Ben Eller Great video again Ben, your bends suck could also be a useful lesson. Out of tune bends are worse than bad vibrato imho.
Adam Pleasance absolutely true!
Uncle Ben,within 5 minutes of watching ur video I FINALLY made the pinched harmonics I was trying to master for a year!,,, I’m so happy I’m going to relieve myself after the end of this video.BTW my aunt Julie wants to meet u at the drive in movies in topeka
Well.. that was the best PH video I've come across on YT and the last time I saw a delivery that dry, I was on a camel in the Abu Dhabi desert!
I was having the hardest time doing these, watched your video, laughed my ass off, and now I can do them perfectly. Thank you!!!!!
Your advice helped me finally get how to do this! I had my wrist way too concave, when I was closer to where my wrist normally is in muting strings above my playing string with the right hand, I finally was able to strike string and then thumb in the correct order and with the correct lightness to produce the squeal. Thanks Uncle Ben!
Fantastic demonstration, slow and detailed camera closeups really help and thanks for mentioning Billy Gibbons!!
Excellent explanation of some of the theory that others guys tend to miss. I'll have another go at them.
Dude this helped so much! I've been playing guitar for ages but never could get pinch harmonics consistent but this helped lots! Thank you, subscribed :D
***** cheers, thank you!
Man just took a drink of coffee when you did the pick, string, Aunt Julie comparison and ended up spitting coffee all over my iPad! LMAO! Lessons are great and you are a very articulate, accurate player. Keep em coming and thank you for sharing your knowledge. Just wish you lived closer to Nashville for lessons.
Awesome video, so I'm trying to get scales/modes down but I'm lost on what should be covered first, also I seem to forget certain scales when ever I'm learning new ones. Maybe do a video on scales and the theories behind them? thanks
These are the best instructional videos ever. Thank you so much.
hahaha best comment ever! thanks so much dude. Share it on your social media, i would really appreciate it!
It's great how this channel is consistent through time, but the quality improved!
Ive been playing 33 years now, never seen anyone quite explain things the way you do, very understandable, especially your vids on Sweeps.... Subscribed
Great lessons, good humor, enjoyed your video, i'm subscribing.
excellent! thank you!
Your videos have come a long way.
Thanks for the lesson uncle ben!
If you're also having trouble doing pinches, you could also use a different pick. I was using large cellulose picks and I couldn't get it right, switched to Jazz III's and it was smooth sailing.
Thanks Ben,good explaination. Years ago i had to figured it out by myself, but it's nice to have someone who has been 'thru it' and shares it crystal clear :) . Keep on the good work!
ive tryed to teach ppl this. very well explained !!! i found this by accident as a kid, sometime is couldnt do it and didnt know why, then it just became natural
I know this is a rather old video, but I love it. Thanks Uncle Ben for showing me that pinch harmonics are not pinches after all. Damn you high school music teacher, always told me to pinch the pick between index finger on the down stroke. Your way is not only easier, but makes much more harmonic sense. Thanks for the great lessons, keep up the great work.
by far the best video I've seen on "How to" do a pinch harmonic. Thanks a ton man!!!
I love your videos! I am definitely going to try to do upstroke pinch harmonics now.
Thanks dude! Good luck, they're tough!
I use the side edge of my index fingernail as the 2nd contact for the upstroke pinch harmonic. Once you understand it it's actually more consistent than downstroke pinch harmonic
I. use pick and extended index finger (-AH-). still get a similar loud squeal quite easily ! no awkward pick /thumb technique required !
Vintage VHS Uncle B, Never Fails I remember these videos from back in the day now there on DVD and everything makes sense.
You come a long way G, Stay a Tru.
Best vid I've seen on pinch harmonics with or without Aunt Julie and 2 Live Crew!
You are one funny dude. Rock on
