This is Why You Suck at Guitar lesson P90X: Your Pinch Harmonics Suck

  • Because you demanded it! It's time to make your guitar squeal like some unfortunate soul who wandered onto some banjo-playing backwoods maniac's property. I am sick and tired of you not being able to pull off a decent pinch harmonic. How else are you going to score that ladyboy you met a Hot Topic if you can't get your pinches worked out, brah? You've got your sweeps worked out (thanks to me), so now all you need to become the reigning King of the Ball Pit is the perfect pinch. And i'm about to show you how to do it.
I ought to be making millions. You're going to get this free lesson on how to master the artificial harmonic by getting your tone right, working that pick, learning a weird trick involving Cindy Crawford's beauty mark, and much more. You will have Zakk Wylde weeping with jealously in no time.
Let me know what you suck at and i will show you! Leave me a comment or send me a message and we will work it out. And don't forget, i teach one on one Skype guitar lessons for a reasonable rate (first born child) with flexible hours. Let's get rippin.

I can do good pinch harmonics on the higher stings quite comfortably, however I can't quite get them to sound right on the lower ones (like in the introduction to Slipknot's Psychosocial) I can sort of get it, but no where near as awesome as Jim Root/Mick Thomson makes it sound. Any tips?

    • @Kid574
      @Kid574 9 років тому +3

+Nya Selio Had same issues aswell a while back... figured that lower strings have a "wider" vibration path, meaning i had to be more gentle and quicker. That sorted it out for me.

Another good way to look at it is to strum with the pick and that dotted part of your thumb simultaneously. Upstroke pinches can be done in number of ways depending on whether or not you bite your nails. It gave a blister and now I have to wait for it to heal.

Thanks a ton, big boy. Say hi to my mom later tonight.
Can we get a lesson on TONE? I know it's goddamn subjective, but...how do we get that delicious metal tone you used in the "I, Dementia" solo? Maybe a run-through of the typical modeling amp settings (i.e. bass, mids, treble, presence, gain, OD channels, reverb, ect.) because all of us 12 year olds convinced mommy and daddy to buy us Line 6 spider amps...and why we don't scoop our mids, what all those silly knobs mean and do, ect. I just want a metal tone so daddy will let me back in the house again :(
    1. learn to play
    2. get good tone
    3. ????
    4. Profit

The moment I went from not being able to do it, to being able to do it, was when I realized you don’t need to pick super hard to get a pinch harmonic. I was digging into the string with my pick whenever I went in for a PH, and all of a sudden I tried picking really softly and it was like nigh and day, now I can do it perfect. Pick very softly and follow through with your thumb.

Man just took a drink of coffee when you did the pick, string, Aunt Julie comparison and ended up spitting coffee all over my iPad! LMAO! Lessons are great and you are a very articulate, accurate player. Keep em coming and thank you for sharing your knowledge. Just wish you lived closer to Nashville for lessons.

Awesome video, so I'm trying to get scales/modes down but I'm lost on what should be covered first, also I seem to forget certain scales when ever I'm learning new ones. Maybe do a video on scales and the theories behind them? thanks

If you're also having trouble doing pinches, you could also use a different pick. I was using large cellulose picks and I couldn't get it right, switched to Jazz III's and it was smooth sailing.

I know this is a rather old video, but I love it. Thanks Uncle Ben for showing me that pinch harmonics are not pinches after all. Damn you high school music teacher, always told me to pinch the pick between index finger on the down stroke. Your way is not only easier, but makes much more harmonic sense. Thanks for the great lessons, keep up the great work.

I use the side edge of my index fingernail as the 2nd contact for the upstroke pinch harmonic. Once you understand it it's actually more consistent than downstroke pinch harmonic

    I. use pick and extended index finger (-AH-). still get a similar loud squeal quite easily ! no awkward pick /thumb technique required !
