    Step 2 on your path to recovery! Last time, i made it rain with glorious information on how to sweep pick on that guitar your uncle gave you last year before he got thrown in jail. You learned the essentials of left and right hand technique that are critical for sweeping. But this time ,i'm gonna make it HAIL with a heavy-duty lesson on how to put those concepts into practice and make yourself sound like the next Francis Bubbletrousers! Yes, the VERY one!
    We will go over ways to practice the more difficult aspects of sweep picking, including the full/empty technique we talked about last time, and doing rolls with the fret hand. I'm gonna show you how to use a metronome to practice this stuff, cause using a metronome is SMART. Its the whole reason i'm on a first-name basis with my stepmom. Yeah that's right. And lastly we're gonna learn some vital practice routines for sweeping, from 2 strings all the way up to 6! It's gonna get real, kids. Its all for you, Damien.
    Tell me what you suck at, and i will tell you why! Leave comments requesting more videos on specific topics, and i will show you the way. That song "Show Me the Way" by Peter Frampton? Yeah that's about me. Just sayin.
    Playing my swirled Ibanez RG470 loaded with Dimarzio Super 2 and Chopper pickups, playing through a Marshall JCM800 profile on my Kemper. Avatar 2x12, Matrix GT800FX power amp, and Pickboy Edge 1.14mm picks.
    Meow get to work!

    It is insane how much this video has helped me. I dunno why but my sweeps were always ok descending but sucked coming back up, by really slowing it down I found that my ring finger was the culprit.
    You see, my wedding ring was weighing down my finger, so I got a divorce and now my sweeping doesnt suck! Thanks Uncle Ben!
    Jokes aside though, these are legitimately the best guitar lesson videos I've seen and it is helping me heaps, so truly, thank you.

    Awesome tips!! I found that it's helpful to practice arpeggios that are a total of 12 notes so that you can practice doing "triplets" over a 4/4 metronome. This really helps you get the fee of how triplet sweeps fit into regular 4/4 music....and ultimately allows you to throw a nice, perfectly timed sweep into your live playing.

    Had a real breakthrough today, Ben. About a week ago I realised I was just moving my left hand fingers way too much, so I went back to some really basic exercises and concentrated on keeping the fingers close to the strings and only moving them as far as they needed to move, no further. Result? My still-inadequate sweep-picking speed had improved by about 25% when I went back to this stuff. Even my stepdad said I'd improved. I am so stoked.

    Hey thanks for going in depth, a lot of guitar videos are basically "Just do it!"
    Sorry if I missed it, but on the upsweep, I get strings ringing out... do I do like, regressive palm muting where I mute those strings with my fingers as I go back up? Or is it probably a left hand problem?

    • @BenEller
      @BenEller  10 років тому +3

      little of both! gently "empty" each finger as you come off of every note, and that pretty well does the trick.

    I found the beginning of Rock Discipline to be quite awesome. That's all I've seen of it. I'm sure the whole thing is fucking amazing. Thanks for another good one.

    hey man could you give us a lesson about fundamental guitar effect pedals to buy when playing heavier sound? like what kind of pedals would you recommend to analog starters so that you don't wanna screw up into buying the wrong pedal to start with. cheers to this video btw. it helped me alot!

    awesome lesson the only problem I still have is the turning points ( when you change from up to down strokes and down to up), and it might be strange but long big sweeps arpeggio's go better than a standard 5 string major sweep :/

    • @BenEller
      @BenEller  10 років тому +1

      yup, the turnarounds with the pick are the hardest part! practice the little 2 string arpeggios a LOT, as they are basically nothing BUT turnarounds.

    Do you think there is a benefit or drawback to unmusical practice patterns? Is there a reason one would choose these kind of chromatic sounding shapes over just finding a random arpeggio to use for practice?

    • @MrCk1234567890
      @MrCk1234567890 2 роки тому

      It’s like sports, you can’t play yourself into shape; you have to do the conditioning. Doing the mindless chromatic exercises is just to build speed and technique. It sucks but then when you plug in arpeggio shapes and scale runs, you’re better at it (ideally)

    Really great second lesson. I have an Idea for for next lesson. PINCH HARMONICS. I can do them well on the lower strings but when it comes to the two highest strings and the higher frets they sound like ass.

    Do you recommend just playing each note on each beat when doing these exercises with the metronome, or should I just practice them as eighth notes? Also, could you do a lesson on alternate picking in the future? Thanks, and your videos are awsome.

    Suzie Brule is my cousin...Who cares? I wasn't really able to follow along until you put it into sports jargon that I can relate to; thanks!
    Seriously though, you have a great series of lessons on here. You give helpful insight concerning technique and practice examples that can be easily implemented into creative play later on. I also appreciate that you don't involve much theory; Wasco devotes plenty of time to that. You're one click closer to 25K, dude!

      CutePinkFuzzyThings thanks a lot, man! If you ever want to get super hip on some theory, though, lets do some one on one skype lessons. I can make all that shit understandable and usable!
