Bicycling Iowa's Summerset Trail, Carlisle to Indianola (April 15, 2024) Tulips and Warmth

- We headed south for a 12-day road trip to enjoy some seasonably warm spring weather and ride some new bike trails. Our fourth day of riding was on the Summerset Trail which is to the southeast of Des Moines. It is an 11-mile trail on an old spur of the Rock Island train line. This is a delightful trail that was in good condition. We went beyond the southern end of the trail to do a lap around Simpson College and also did a lap around Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park, both are recommended. Going south on the trail there is a decent 3 mile climb from the Middle River to Indianola. Des Moines is a wonderful area to bicycle ride and it is one to add to your list of bicycling destinations.

That is interesting that it was on the old Rock Island rail line. I have ridden the "rock" out of Kansas City by the stadiums and part of the Pleasant Hill section. It eventually connects to the Katy Trail in Windsor MO. Nice video.

@@RichardMooreAndJulieMoorethe rock island someday will parallel the KATY but curve to the south. With a connector trail it will be an amazing loop. Probably 300 miles.
@@slalomkingwe read that news recently. It would be great to ride the Katy and Rock Island loop sometime in the future.
