  • Kyle charges up the 2025 Lucid Air Grand Touring on the 19" aero wheels and sets off on our typical 70-mph highway range loop. This is the longest range EV we've ever tested! He runs the car until it stops moving, which took quite a long time. Enjoy the video.

      Around 62 MPH would be notably better; a lesson speed freaks in all types of vehicles should have learned decades ago. Haste literally makes waste. See Art Berman, etc. on the peaking of shale oil this decade, possibly by 2027.

      @@CanisoGaming lool Model S starts 75k, the Lucid Air GT costs 110k. You get so much more range, charging speed, tech and comfort that they are not that different from a price-to-performance ratio. Also you could just take the Air Touring version for 79k, and basically have the same driving specs as Model S but still with better technical underpinning and comfort. Teslas are outdated and are cheaply build products for quite a lot of money.

      The advantage is not so much the range as simply not having to worry about range. After over 2 years in mine I have a lifetime average of 3.2 miles/kWh. Not great, one might think, but that is on the less efficient 21" wheels going 85 everywhere and making Zero effort to drive efficiently. The Air GT is an absolute hoot to flog around, especially on twisty roads. The big range just means you have the energy on-board to get to those fun roads w/ enough left in the tank to still play.

    • @stephkent2736
      @stephkent2736 14 днів тому

      I’m going to disagree.
      My basic rule for EV viability is “can I drive from Cleveland to Albany in under 7 hours?” as it’s what I do the trip in via ICE travel.
      Cleveland to Albany is a pretty good test as it has elevation changes, lake wind, traffic, etc without being too extreme. You’re also incentivized to make one off-highway stop with the discount gas on the Seneca reservation in Silver Creek, which simulates having to do one off-highway stop for DCFC. I think the Lucid could do it with full creature comforts turned on.
      That route is 475 miles and is mostly 65 mph with a little 55 mph and 70 when you get into OH. If I can make 2x10 minute stops and add 200 miles via DCFC it should handle the trip all but the most obscene weather.
      It also means we’ll need 14KW L2 charging at hotels and the like (114KWh means you’ll need 13.2 KW to fill overnight). Also means the “fill it up” mindset changes to the “how much more to I need to get to my destination” mindset, which has been my big EV learning curve revelation.

    • @Gazer75
      @Gazer75 14 днів тому +3

      But at what cost? These long range EVs are out of reach for most people.
      When we get 300 miles of 75% range below 40k I'd say its getting there.

    • @AnonymousFreakYT
      @AnonymousFreakYT 13 днів тому +2

      The big thing for road trips is that the 500 mile range means with a decent charge curve (even just equal to the 2022,) and you'll be able to add multiple hundred miles of range quicker than you can get fast food at a restaurant immediately next to the charger.

      I hope so but phone makers keep choosing cost (and thinness) over battery capacity and I am afraid car makers will do the same. If they can keep range the same with smaller, cheaper batteries, that is probably what they will choose rather than giving us more range out of the same size battery. I really hope I am wrong because this kind of range makes charging infrastructure a non-issue. I regularly drive from Atlanta to upstate NY, about 900 miles, with a stop overnight to sleep and charge back up to 100%. If I did that trip with this Lucid, I would never have to DC fast charge at all.

    • @GamingProject23
      @GamingProject23 13 днів тому

      @@meandmyEVwell there were some phones that had huge batteries, but noone bought them since for most people, 2 days battery life is enough ;)
      Same with EVs, very few people actually have an advantage of such a range and the 50k over a Model S or 100k or more above a Model 3 wouldnt be worth it for me to maybe stop one time less in a year. Most will stop to eat or use restrooms in such a trip multiple times anyways. I thought I needed a lot of range and bough a Model 3, but honestly most of my driving, including trips I can do in our Mini SE as well. Doing 800 miles in a day in the Tesla is not an issue. I never drove this much in my ICE vehicle.

    Some might think that 500 mile range is not important but when you factor in ideal charging and discharging rate to maximise battery life; there goes 20% at least and a bit of spirited driving; you'll be left with probably a conservative 350 miles range. Apply the same to a car with a maximum range of 350 miles; now you're dealing with a 200-mile range; real world driving.
    For people who mainly charge at home or have poor access to a public charging network, such cars are ideal.

    I just drove my GT from VA near DC to Pittsburg and then through WVA and back to VA. Averaged between 4.8 and 5 miles per 1 % of charge. Which is great. That means 480 to 500 easy. And it was a lot of up and down hills. I was quite impressed that is was that close to the EPA 514 for my car.

    I think people mostly think about how they only need range far enough for bathroom/eat type charging stop. However, there are definitely some charging deadzones in rural areas that aren’t anywhere near interstates.
    I have family in very rural areas and some of them there’s no way I could get to and back in even a Tesla. Maybe if I tried to find a business with 249v, but that’s just annoying and super inconvenient.
    With this kind of range, you can actually go most places in the US without really having to think about it too much. Especially in 2025 when they move to NACS and can get on the supercharger network.
    This thing will definitely be on my list in 2025.

      You're in luck. The KIA EV3 will be launching in 2025. Similar size to a Bolt but it has a 81.4kwh gross battery versus the Bolts ~67kwh battery. EV3 is more aerodynamic, has better thermal management, and overall should be more efficient than the already efficient Bolt. It will also have a heat pump available for FWD models and AWD performance model releasing later.
      Bolt is rated at 4 miles/kwh. I expect a 4-4.3 miles/kwh rating for the EV3 on the newer/stricter EPA test. Assuming 77kwh is usable, that would equate to 308-330 mile EPA range rating. So the highway range should be around 275 miles which is good for a car starting between 30-35K before the tax credit. Charging is also WAY faster than the Bolt. I believe they are claiming 10-80% in 31 minutes which is less than half the time it took the Bolt to do 10-80% on a much smaller battery.
      EV3 is a perfect replacement for the Bolt. Especially since it allows for bidirectional charging, and many features the Bolt didn't have. Performance is similar to the bolt with a 0-60 under 7 seconds based on some reviews in Korea. Also passenger space is excellent but cargo space is smaller than the Bolt which is the only downside I see.

Plenty of people are reporting 350+ miles of real world range in lower speed suburbs/city driving. I'm guessing 260 miles of range at 75mph and right under 300 miles of highway range @70mph for the FWD long range models

    Why a struggling OEM doesn't acquire Lucid is beyond me. If VW Group is willing to spend USD 5bn to improve their software / electrical architecture, I don't see why it doesn't make sense for an OEM to spend c. 12bn (assuming a 25% acquisition premium on current mkt cap) to buy out Lucid for proprietary access to the best EV tech in the business. If any attempts have been made, maybe the PIF has blocked them being the majority shareholders?

    • @evkx
      @evkx 14 днів тому +2

      @@summertyme5748 buffer is the difference between gross capacity and net capacity (usable battery). In this test it shows that it is above 118kWh usable. The gross capacity is as I understand 119kWh. But it said 118 quite some time. The first generation e-tron had 8% buffer. (95/83.6). It stopped when you had used 83.6
      Some cars have a non linear SOC rating and have much larger percent from 0-1% than 1-2%.The lucid is an example of that, but it is not a buffer, but some call it a zero buffer. But is is usable so it does not protect battery.
