I love that this is pretty much unironically Luke’s reasoning in epVIII and the argument by the... least reasonable people of the SW fandom prior to the sequels to say that both the jedi weren’t better than the sith, and that the Republic was no better than the empire.

You could have kinda fixed that "Maybe" scene, by having him say; "No... No... I , I don't.... I just know, I don't want to lose you, and I am afraid if the world knows what you can do they will." or something akin to that, show that he wants to save this kids, but he just doesn't want the government to take his son away and turn him into a lab rat.
Yeah I could understand the Kent's being worried for their kid like any good parents should be and conflicted about the situation, but that Clark would even consider letting people get hurt/killed just for his own sake is what really sticks in my craw. It goes against everything that superman stands for and who he is as a person.

I disagree, I don't think their should be even an "I don't know" when it comes to the decision of saving kids or not. Kent should have framed his worries in a way that didn't compromise Clark's question to morality. Something like "I'm proud of what you have done son. You've done a great good, something I know you were meant for. But you must promise me you be careful with these powers. I can't risk anyone taking you away, I can't risk losing you."
Something like that would have been nice. Man of Steel really needed that 78 touch to liven up the story, bring the heart and soul of why Superman is this light in a world seemingly devoid of meaning and hope. It was all so cynical and heartless, lost and confused, like most nihilistic tropes in modern movies today. This was just trying to be "dark" for its own sake when it should have been much more.

How is it possible to write the kents wrong. They are good hardworking farmers with a good sense of morals. If clark was found out because he saved people his father would give him a pat on the back and a good job son. He wouldn't for a second consider clarks secret worth even a single life. One of my favorite moments is we find out that the Kents wrap their christmas presents in lead so clark can't use xray vision to see them. It small but it shows they care enough to go the extra mile.
fuck, I'm currently watching through all the DCAU shows and man did I love Comfort and Joy. What the polar opposite of what DC has become, it's just a nice, wholesome story about our characters interacting.
Zack Synder has a serious case of Gen X sensibilities in that no one can be an intrinsic moral figure or contain inner goodness. Every person has to be acting in their self-interest, be grim-dark, and not inspire other people.
This is not to say these sensibilities are inherently bad forms of story-telling, as the Battlestar Galactica remake or Flashpoint Paradox proves. What it does prove is that amorality is an inherent part of Gen X storytelling, which happens to be at odds with one of the fundamental premises of a SUPERHERO story. Gen X sensibilities work on Batman because he's a weirdo dressed as a bat punching even weirder degenerates. It doesn't work on optimistic superheroes because they're also trying to set themselves as exemplars.

Remember how in Red Son we got to see even a Superman raised in Soviet Russia his entire life as the USSR’s greatest pride STILL valued human life more than any nationality or patriotism? How that entire comic existed just to show Clark’s core values transcend language, country, politics, and culture?

Is that Red Son comic really trying to say that Superman is like *cosmically, transcendently* a good man no matter what his upbringing is? Because that’s not how people work, and that’d be bad writing. Or in that comic, does he get raised by a Russian family with good values? Cuz if that’s the case, then it’s _not_ dumb, but then it’s still just proving the point about your upbringing, no different from the classic Superman story.
I haven't read it, so I don't know. Step back and assess the Red Son comic like any other story. Is it good?

It explores a what if scenario where Superman isn't raised by the Kents while delving into a flaw that normal Superman often has with a critique of Socialism at the same time. What often happens to our blue Boy Scout is that he often believes that he's always right, that he's always in control, even when the rest of his trusted teammates disagree with him. This causes friction between the League in JLA and slides in perfectly with Socialisms ideals of having a trusted overseer that can make the best choices for all citizens. Red Son provides the USSR with an Ubermensch that CAN make the "right" choices and explores what happens to the rest of the world for the next few decades with him in play. This Clark isn't good in a country boy from Kansas type of way, more so an idealistic interpretation of Socialist values (efficiency, rationality, equality, predictability).
Damn. Those cartoon scenes rock. Everyone’s out here trying to make brooding superheroes that are conflicted over their morals, but Superman’s conviction to his morals is what makes him a compelling character.
That's because the current batch of writers for superhero movies are the modern equivalent of the aristocracy of 19th century Russia that Dostoevsky was responding to.
I am sick of modern writers sullying characters like Superman in the name of making them “more interesting.” Like a moral dilemma isn’t interesting unless the character is forced to abandon their morals. I personally find the idea of a character successfully overcoming the trolley problem very fascinating.
People like Snyder have such a bleak view of the world.

A small part of Batman v. Superman was filmed in my hometown, a relatively small town in New Mexico. So Henry Cavill was around for about a month while they were filming. He came into the gym my mom worked at every day and would just work out with random people. Super nice guy, like, outside of being an actor. He was super sweet and genuine, and not in the way that some actors are, where they’ll pose for selfie’s and shake your hand and that’s it. He would help clean up the gym and would hang out and talk with the other patrons and was just a nice person.
I’m not a huge fan of his work per se, but that part at 31:55 brought it to mind, so I thought it’d be an interesting story to tell.
I do believe it on the principle he keeps to himself and don't mingle in the pdowood life style.
This was indeed an interesting story to read.
Love stories like this. My buddy's sister used to occasionally work out with wrestler Randy Orton and he was apparently super chill too.
Apologies for the long comment but this movie is frustrating:
This film has 0 self awareness when it comes to what’s going. Which, inversely, is something I love about a lot of MCU material. In Avengers 2012, Civil War, Winter Soldier, Iron Man, and I believe even Endgame, there were whole portions where the characters just talked. Nothing else. They sat down and discussed the abilities they possess and how they believe they should be used. The greatest example being Civil War when the team discussed the Accords. In that one 3 minute scene we got so much out of how far these characters have come and the previous movies are what informed those changes.
If we don’t want to bring in sequels, then we can just as easily go to Captain America: The First Avenger or Iron Man. Tony saw what his weapons were actually doing to people and he changed for the better. We saw that Cap simply wanted to fight for his freedom and the lives of his fellow soldiers, no matter how weak he may be(grenade scene).
What do we get from Clark? He saves the men on the oil rig and he saves the kids on the school. Ok fine. But then he goes to skewer a guy’s truck , possibly costing him his job, and he causes so much unnecessary collateral damage both in Smallville and Metropolis. What he did in Smallville alone is worth criticizing. I would love to pause the film, pull Clark out and ask him to describe what he just did in that moment. Bringing those Kryotonians into a heavily populated area is downright deplorable and borderline villainous.
You know what I love about a good chunk of MCU films? The Avengers actually care. Cap and Tony make it crystal clear that they want to beat the bad guy and save anyone they can while they’re at it. Avengers 2012 - they create a perimeter in the battle of NY, planning to keep the destruction in an isolated area while trying to find a way to close the portal. Age of Ultron - Tony scans for civilians before he slams Hulk through an unfinished building and saves people while he's fighting off Hulk later on. Cap also says their goal is to get everyone off the rock/meteor thing in the final battle. Civil War - I believe team Iron Man evacuates the airport in case a battle breaks out.
Superman: Secret Origin is a book that Snyder and co. clearly read while writing the script but they completely missed a lot of what the book was saying about Superman. The scene where Johnathan reveals the ship to Clark, the dialogue is ripped straight from the book. “I just want to be your son” “you are my son”. Which is great out of context, but then you realize this is the same Johnathan that said “maybe you should've let those kids die.” In that same comic, young Clark saves one of his friends from a tornado using his powers, and when he tells Ma and Pa Kent about it, they are nothing but proud of him. Martha even made the superman suit for him. They let him choose his own path and they don’t shame him for who he is.
Also in the comic: The military tries to kill Superman because they believe that he’s a threat. They send Metallo(basically a Cyborg with Kryptonite for a heart) and a group of soldiers after him. The confrontation happens in the middle of a busy street. Metallo goes a bit crazy and begins causing damage in the area, putting civilians at risk. Superman says to the soldiers “Stop firing! There are hundreds of people in these buildings!” Metallo begins beating on the soldiers that were initially working with him and Superman says “Corben those are your own men!” He even shows concern for people trying to kill him. After he regains his strength, he flies Metallo up into space to prevent anymore collateral damage.
After Superman beats Metallo, the military tries to arrest him, while the citizens try to protect him. He lands in the middle of the two groups and says “Stop. Everyone. Please, stop this before someone gets seriously hurt.” The crowds cheers him on, praising him as a god and asking who sent him here, “Nobody sent me here. I came here.”
A random civilian says “tell us, Superman! What do you want us to do!”
Superman replies, “I want you to stop looking for a great savior. Lex Luthor isn’t it. I’m not it. You are. All of you are. I do what I do because I was given a gift. But all of you were given gifts, too. Use them to make each other's lives better. Show the world that Metropolis has a heart.”
Later, he meets Lois to thank her for making him feel like he belongs and for helping the city. She tells him, “Superman, the world is an unbelievably tough place. And it’s unfair and unjust and cynical. But you’ve shown me and everyone else in Metropolis that it doesn’t have to be that way. Not if we help one another however we can. It can be that simple, can’t it?”
Superman replies, “I think so. This can be a great planet, Lois. But making it great starts with each one of *us*.”
I know, it’s an argument from adaptation, but this is what Superman in MoS should’ve been. And the fact that Snyder and co. took inspiration from this book and completely missed the point is honestly insulting. Despite whatever flaws the comic has, I think it’s a strong representation of who Clark is. Superman is supposed to care. Heroes are supposed to care. In MoS, it just seems like he hates saving people. It would’ve gone a long way if the writers had Superman, throughout the battle, plead with Zod to stop causing so much damage, constantly trying to get him away from the city and saving what people he can.
That’s exactly what happens in “Death of Superman” the animated movie. Despite him being on his last leg because of his battle with Doomsday, Superman is trying his absolute hardest to save everyone around him. Clark in MoS? Jumps over a tanker that destroys a parking garage, sends the ship through 3 or 4 buildings, brings the bad guys into a populated town in Smallville, kisses Lois while there are probably hundreds of people trapped under rubble, begging for help, and crashes a satellite in front of the general. This Superman isn’t a hero. And thanks MauLer for bringing up Tony trying to save people in AoU during the Hulk fight. Whatever problems that movie has, at least they’re self aware when it comes to how powerful these heroes really are and account for the damage they cause.
I think a great thing about comic books as a medium is blending these overtop, sci-fi elements with legitimate struggles we actually go through. Discussing morality and killing. Or keeping a part of yourself secret in fear that the people around you won't accept you for who you are. That's why a lot of people cite stories like Batman Under the Red Hood as one of the best comics and batman films of all time. It explores why Batman holds certain beliefs and what those beliefs do to those around him. I don't think we get anything like that with Clark in MoS and it is truly a shame...
TL;DR: I just want my heroes to care and to act like real people… Is that too much to ask?
I want to thank you for your comment mate. We are in an age where everything has to be political, cynical, subvert the expectations and "realistic" if done correctly and earned none of these things are wrong, but damn it Snyder was not the guy to this version of Superman. I just want to feel a little bit like the first time I watched the JL cartoon when I was a kid, on a big budget live action movie... apparently it is too much to ask these days. At least MCU made me feel like that for the most part and I feel satisfied with the conclusion we got in Endgame despite it's flaws and I feel lucky for it, most fans of these franchises does not get that anymore.

Kryptonians (like humans) can’t survive long periods outside the protection of an atmosphere due to intense solar radiation and all the other issues with space fairing.

A better plan from Zod would be to ask Superman for the codex and terraform Venus or one of the moons of Jupiter so that the Kryptonians could have a new home, and also benefit from exposure to a Yellow Sun. That way, Clark could be the bridge between the people and guide them all forward into a new and better future. If Zod had tried this, I think Clark would have agreed, and it would also show the growth of Zod and his followers after the destruction of Krypton, moving to start over.
Snyder depicts Superman like an American who just found out he's part Irish and starts talking like Ireland is his home
Cavill’s story to getting the part of Superman is wholesome.
It was such a shame he had to be put into edgy post-Dark Knight DC. Cavill would have been perfect for the original Superman style, the corny but ultimately inspiring Ubermensch who smiles while saving the day.
Then they wasted his cast. 😈😈😈😈 To think that Marvel and Disney weren't sure RDJ and Depp would shine as Tony Stark and Jack Sparrow, respectively, and they nailed it with good writing, while Cavill was given crap after crap when the studio cast him as their first choice makes me mad to no end.

This would have made way more sense if Zod pretended like he wanted to live peacefully with humans, but had a secret plot to breed an army of superpowered Kryptonians and enslave humanity. Then Superman, with his good nature and strong moral character, could play the Christ figure to Zod's anti-Christ. But you can still have the set up for BvS because Batman doesn't know Zod was evil and he (and most of the world) is mad at Superman for trashing what they thought was a sweet deal for apparently no reason. You get your Christ imagery, your dark/tortured Superman who is misunderstood, your conflict with the rest of the superheroes, and it makes sense.

Don’t do this! Man of Steel is crap regardless of it being a bad adaptation. It doesn’t hold up on its own. Also all the other terrible things EFAP had listed.

An adaptation doesn’t need to be accurate to the source material, it just needs to be good and any deviation from the material needs to be justified.
In the case with Man Of Steel, the film on its own isn’t very good but the changes it makes to the mythos and source material detract from the character and has been done better in other depictions. It’s not saying that the film has to be like the other ones, but that in comparison to previous works, it really sucks.

Not gonna lie, his additional info about the humanisation of Superman brought a tear to my eye.
I agree mostly except for the one about being able to choke out zod. Hard to cut off oxygen to the brain when kryptonians don't seem to need it. I mean Clark flies in space and also slept under water in this movie when knocked unconscious during the oil rig scene.
When you went through that one Man of Steel defense video, they said Superman tries to bring Zod away from the civilians multiple times but the battle starts thanks to him tackling Zod so far he drags him from the countryside into the city.
I MIGHT have excused that initial hit as Superman rushing to save Martha from the three Kryptonians and disregarding the consequences from the emotional rush. But they needed to have him follow up with something like immediately trying to get Zod out of Smallville (which he had an ample timespot to do when Zod took off the helmet and started having an adaption seizure). The others clearly know he's the only credible threat to them in battle, so they're obviously going to follow him rather than bother with the town, especially if he is threatening their leader at a vulnerable moment.
Also he leaves his Mother alone in his attempt to save her free to be taken hostage (it’s not commented on again)

Just in how the EFAP is edited (which seems to have a cross fade suggesting a small cut), there is about 7 seconds between Zod starting to drop from stress and Superman spotting the Gunship (much less being shot by it). Given the speeds the Kryptonians can move at, that is enough time for Clark to have gotten a blow in if not launched him away again.
The progression feels more like Faora restarted the action while Clark was on pause, rather than him making a move and being interrupted. It doesn't convey very well the sense that the others very abruptly interrupted the confrontation

Zod's persuasion reminds me of a scene in Elfen Lied where someone accuses the main character of killing a bunch of people, but since she's not human, she doesn't sees anyone she killed as people. I can imagine him creating that projection as just a display of the mighty of Krypton... like Cruella de Vil standing over a 100 dead puppies and all she thinks about is her gorgeous fur coat .

They made ME nostalgic, and I’ve never watched any of the cartoons (maybe Batman from the 90s because of my younger siblings, that’s it for DC). It’s just so nice to see Superman...properly portrayed? You know?
I'm so blown away that the writing in cartoons intended for children can be so much better than the best these films costing hundreds of millions can come up with. All these writers are still around, I just find it baffling that they didn't commission scripts from them.
I miss the dcau. The recent dc animanited movies are hit or miss(but when they hit, they hit well, but also vice versa) and feel like anthology films that are barely connected. That’s fine and all, but I feel like there’s still plenty of potential left for dc to further explore that classic universe they created(aside from a film or two that only lightly does that).

Please continue to let Meme Repository edit the DCEU Movies. Their editors notes and use of other DC Materials like the animated stuff is genuinely really good and ads a LOT for greater context in just how fucking ridiculous these movies are. I dont know if its JUST because theyre a massive superman fan but i am outright excited to see what other materials they use for the other movies to show why the DCEU Fail for the other movies. Also their choice of music during their sections legit gave me the feeltisms.

I've never realized how hard this movie is trying to be like Batman Begins.
The main difference is that Batman Begins shows us a Batman that has clear moral principles and geniunely cares about the people of Gotham, and is consistent in his morals and the lessons he is taught. Man of Steel shows us a Superman that doesn't give a shit about anyone and just slams through buildings and leaves people dead with no remorse or care as to who may die as a result of his actions.

People defend the fact that Superman takes the fight with Zod into orbit, as a counter to all the other times Clark just throws him around the city...

I'm blown away by how Christopher Reeves was able to "transform" into Superman and then back into Clark. It felt like a real transformation, how he seemed to grow and then shrivel, all in real-time. Even his voice changed, from deep and powerful to nasally and wimpy. It's really incredible. No computer tricks, no clever cuts, just a skilled actor.
I want to thank Meme Repository for sharing his love for Superman, who I've always been ambivalent about, be it directly by showing us how other adaptations of him showed just how fascinating a character he is (when handled right), or indirectly, by mocking the ever-living shit out of...whatever the hell Man of Steel was.

I like how a good writer would have people try to play off of Zod's ego when it comes to terraforming. He's complaining about 'years of pain' despite it resulting in Kryptonians with super powers, and he's all about having 'The best, strongest, mightiest Kryptonians'. Yet, no one thinks to ask him why he's being such a coward and exchanging a brief bit of pain for a _super powered race._ Zod, isn't that your _entire_ end goal to begin with? God the writing in this movie sucks.
Yeah. I would have done something like we introduce Joe-el and Zod meeting up after a long time away in a space bar or something Maybe they were old friends in some kind of galactic war. Maybe make it so that krypton has a large interplanetary empire and has mandatory military conscription. And they establish that Zod has recently been promoted for winning a decisive battle, but make it clear that it haunts him. He and Jor-el talk about their frustrations with the council. Jor el is angry that the council doesn’t take the threat of kryptons annihilation seriously because of their computer system brainiac reassuring them, and Zod is angry that the council keeps interfering in the war effort, breathing down his neck and stopping him from ending rebellions on conquered planets quickly and effectively. Zod launches the coup hoping Jor el would join him, but with Zod killing his own country men and the fear that Zod has become a tyrant, Jor el doesn’t join him, and sends Superman to earth. Zod is sent to the phantom zone with Jor el standing by. After krypton dies, Zod is freed with his officers and they find krypton as dust, and Zod is devastated. Not only has krypton been destroyed but their empire has crumbled. The once powerful empire had gone to ruin, with only a few kryptonian soldiers left. Now Zod is devastated his homeworld is gone, and under the pressure of being the new leader of the kryptonians. So his paranoia leads him to earth to try to appeal to Superman, to try to help Zod covert humans into a slave force to rebuild the kryptonian army and bring about a new kryptonian empire. Also the short haired woman would be zod’s lover and they have a child. Adding more pressure onto Zod. Make it so that the battle against Zod, and zods motivation is desperation, paranoia, and obsession rather than the generic I’m evil.

The ending credits to meme repository was well earned here, those editor notes are so on point I'd say Meme Repository has a better concept of Superman than anyone at modern DC. He managed to maintain the usual efap mini edits and jokes, which were all great, with what could be seen as one of the best tributes to the Superman character out there in the disguise of a movie critique. Fantastic work.

Invincible is the only comic/show ive seen that truly acknowledges the horrendous amount of destruction and the incredible loss of life a super human fight would do. And I loved how Omni-Man made a point of that by literally using Invincible as a weapon.
Honestly if you want a better, more sensicle, generally more impactful on an emotional and intellectual level fight, just go watch episode 8 of Invincible. It's truly phenomenal.

Meme Repository did an excellent job with the editing here. Particularly referring to previous Superman material to highlight how this movie fails. That’s the big reason I’ve always really disliked Man of Steel. It goes beyond being just a terribly written movie in it of itself, and it’s not made terrible because the filmmakers didn’t directly follow the source material, but because it actively destroys core aspects of its character consistent across multiple incarnations.
Sounds like an adaptation argument to me.

It is not like it was established in BvS that Batman has been an upstanding superhero, the classic Batman, for the past 20 motherfucking years, and only recently started to go a bit to dark which he strafe back at the end of BvS.

I think the real reason that all the Kryptonion colonies failed was because they tried to terraform with black holes instead of... almost literally anything else
I mean, that's the most effective way to change a planet's gravity without having to pull an absurd amount of mass out of somewhere. So it's sound.
The stupid part is doing it to earth when you can do it literaly anywhere else. They could just stop by earth and say "Hey clark, wanna rebuild krypton and shit?" And be off to terraform some other star.

@@ProxyDoug I think atmosphere composition is the easier to solve. The whole reason our atmosphere is breatheable after all is other biological orgasnisms produce oxygen. other problems like mass, geological activity and magnetism are the hardest issues to terraforming. And they do have the tech for all that, it seems.
Also water is very easy to obtain, so that wouldn't ever be a reason. Hidrogen and oxygen aren't rare materials.
I think Zod decides to terraform Earth because if all of his crew will become gods, he wouldn't be able to control them and rule.
They weren't using black holes to terraform earth, the human crested the singularity that destroyed them by crashing the hyperdrive (or phantom drive as they call) engine from Superman's ship into Zod's ship engine.
I always think of that moment from Rlm where Mike goes "You're trying to draw the sun...it's a fucking circle!" Like the blueprints for a successful Superman story is given to you on a silver platter and yet Snyder still fucked it up.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Snyder's Superman is basically just Male Captain Marvel. Unlikable, bland, invincible and way more violent than necessary. They both also overreact when slighted by a character whom they far outstrip in power.
Meme repository did a really good job this. Not just the edits, but also adding criticisms were the efap gang was to busy discussing other stuff. They do discuss those issues in the subsequent efap, but it is nice to have it in the efap movies.
As someone who loves the character of Superman, I also really appreciated the supplemental material. Since I’m not expecting anyone on EFAP to be that invested or knowledgeable about the lore, having those breakdowns with examples helps show why this was both a poor adaptation as well as how Snyder’s reimagining took the same concepts and made them objectively worse.

@@clairetellkamp6253 So first of, Rags did not criticize Man of Steal for being a bad adaptation of the comics. Rags hasn't read any the comics, so he he has no idea if man of steal is a good adaptation of them. And I don't know why you are picking on Rags when Mauler has the exact same position.
Secondly, Meme Repository made it very clear that he wasn't simply saying "but mu comics" but rather how things had been done previously that either accounted for some of Men of Steels plot hole, were thematically more appropriate and consistent with its messaging, and created an image of superman that had been more humanizing creating a likable character. It is absolutely fair to compare works of media to other works of media in viewing how they achieved certain things as some version may have done a better job than others. If all Meme Repository had done was say "In comics x but in Men of Steal y, so bad" then yes that would be bad, however he provided so much more explanation as to why those worked while Men of Steel didn't. This isn't the same as people going "Homecoming bad cause spooderman different."

It’s funny that the Superman in the animated “Gods and Monsters” movie... a Superman who was the biological son of General Zod and raised by illegal aliens who found him while crossing the border... showed more respect for his human parents then this Superman dose... actually come to think of it the Gods and Monsters Superman “Son of Zod” would be far better for a “grittier and darker” Superman story like this movie then regular Superman.

Why does the world engine need self defense? How often was Krypton terraforming planets with technological life capable of defending itself?
It could be to protect it from debris, but the defenses being tentacle-claw-things make no sense. Apparently, they were supposed to be a nod to Brainiac, which makes it even worse.

These moments are meant to, among other things, demonstrate how Zack Snyder senselessly misses the mark when writing a character with nearly one hundred years of history, and does so by bullheadedly injecting his edgy, teenage 'maturity' into a character that has represented the ideal of 'Hope' for generations now without any good in-universe reason. It's similar to how one would criticize an engineer for fucking up a aircraft design when there are decades of successful design principles and examples to pull from.
Jonathan Kent's behavior is a good set of examples: rather than be the reason Clark sees himself as a human man with powers, than being half of the reason he's a strong, kind, humble man driven to use his powers for the benefit of others, he suggests that Clark may have been better off letting a bus of children die a terrible death, all out of the selfish desire to preserve his family's peace. Later, for the same reasons, he allows himself to die; generally foolish, but neither would create the Superman that would ever risk himself to save the world as he does in Justice League.
Compare to the Spider-man of the MCU: a young genius that idolizes the heroic philanthropist genius, Tony Stark, he's recruited by his hero for reasons he doesn't quite understand and is generally taken under his wing in Homecoming. The criticism often raised is that Peter isn't the poor, lonely, put-upon Spider-man of the comics, but here it makes sense. It makes sense that a genius with a guilt complex and severe daddy issues would latch himself onto a fatherless young genius with a hero complex and support him as he sees fit. It's different, but it works for and enriches each character.

There are objective criticisms of this movie, but arguing "it's bad because it's not like the comics" is an adaptation argument. "This version of Jon Kent is worse because he isn't like the old version" is not a good argument. There are real reasons why he is worse, but the fact that he is different is not enough by itself. Each argument is judged on its own merit. They explain why Jon Kent is a dumbass, but they ALSO say that he's not like the old one. Those are two different arguments. One is valid and one is not. Just because they made both does not make the adaptation argument okay.

It's a twofold argument. Not only is MOS a shoddy execution on its own, but it completely ignores the tropes and conventions of what came before, an essential component of a deconstruction, which I assume Zack was going for. Take John's death; there are several ways to do this without making Clark and John both look retarded, which The Meme Repository discusses. No one is arguing that it is the best or only way, but for the conflict being attempted, it's piss-poor by comparison. For a seasoned writer with access to these tropes and conventions, the stories that use them, and why they do or do not work, it's simply embarrassing. The aircraft is garbage, and there's no excuse.

Its accurate to the lore that he can control the heat of his laser eyes. Again, he uses it to shave his beard in the cartoons. But even that's played for a neat funny secret cool thing...
Here, it implies he melted her skin, which then fuses together and stops her bleeding/closes over the wound... there's legitimate way to do it in real life, but it takes a whole bunch of things, precision laser tech machines, lights, needle and thread. Proper surgery.
This movie takes itself so seriously and such "nods to the lore" don't fit.
@@valentinegonsalves7322 Well I understand the basic process, and I'm not saying Clark wouldn't be able to control his power with that precision, but the way he's doing it (directly above her), plus the type of wound (not a cut, but a giant hole punched into her by a cone-shaped tendril), makes me think it's unlikely that fusing the skin back together with some heat will work. The skin around the wound wouldn't be close together like with a knife cut.
Agreed. There's a pattern in playing fast and loose with Superman's abilities. I mean yeah most superheroes, but Superman especially.
@@kylefrank638 Not to mention this precedes the flying scene post Jor-El where Clark is shown learning to really control his powers (stuff like his Super Strength is a bit down to reflex but compare how flying works out for him or how his Heat/X-Ray vision worked out in school).
Even assuming Cauterizing works and Superman can control his power to that degree, by this film's own depiction he shouldn't have fine enough control to do that at this stage of his story.

The history of the S symbol in the Golden, Silver, Bronze, and the early half of the Modern Age the S was created by Clark Kent and it stood for Superman.
It was the first Superman movie that made the Symbol be a Family Crest of the House of El. The first retcon to the Modern Age Superman's origins utilized that aspect from the movie into the books. I think Smallvile created a Kryptonian Alphabet (which the comics used too) where the family crest was originally an 8 within a diamond shape. That lasted five seasons until Superman Returns went into production, and the show decided to use the film's S symbol as the family crest for the rest of the series even using the Returns suit in the final season.
I'm not sure if it was Smallville or the comics retcons "Birthright" or "Secret Origins" that went with the S symbol meaning Hope.
I'm somewhere in the middle of liking it being a family crest or it just meaning Superman.
As for the Super-suit. Depending on which era of Superman you follow, his suit is either plain cloth that Superman's own invulnerability can protect it from damage or it's fabrics from Krypton and is invulnerable like him. Each version was made by Martha Kent.

My main problem with the film has to do with Zod in the beginning. He’s imprisoned and it has no bearing in the film. I know it was a setup for the sequel but there was no tease. If it were up to me, I would cut that scene out, and then have that be the intro to Superman 2 (haven’t seen the film so maybe this was the case). Lex Luthor is also pretty lackluster, he’s this mole man/businessman. He lives in this hotel suite underground and self proclaim himself as the smartest man on the planet even though he hangs out with two idiots to prop himself up and no one has heard of him. He also ends up getting the upper hand on Superman because he decides to be stupid and tell Lois his weaknesses which is then published to the entire world. In essence, he’s protracted to be the smartest man but none of the things he does comes from intelligence but just being really lucky that all the pieces shifted in a way for anyone to take advantage. The film still holds up though, and that’s also in part due to the performances.
