When a piece of him becomes a relic for the faithful. The knight has died well. The commentary well said. Good one RCH!

So similar to what Taliban members say about Afghanistan and Islam. Its funny how in one sense we see violent martyrdom as glorious and can also so easily view it as abhorrent

Edwin Grove I hear what you’re saying but the difference is that the (counter-)crusades were a defensive venture that only occurred after 400 years of violent Islamic expansionism via the sword and fire had threatened to conquer and subjugate all of Europe under islamofascism

@@dylanmalpass4769 yet the main consequence of the crusades were not the short lived Frankish states of the levant. It was really the death of eastern Christianity, with the sack of Constantinople.

I’d love to see a video detailing the complete misinterpretations of how peasants and serfs lived horrible lives and all noble lords were cruel and greedy. I get so tired of people viewing the Middle Ages through the looking glass of our own day and our own culture. Not to mention the untrue ways Hollywood paints the Middle Ages as well. It’s especially hard for Americans such as myself to view the Middle Ages in a positive or realistic light because of, I feel, our natural distaste for nobility, our natural preference for “freedom”, and our ingrained drive for wealth and consumer products. What a shame...

It makes more sense that along with the enlightenment indoctrination of our forefathers and the group of people who dominate Hollywood and didn't really have the greatest time under monarchs its no wonder we have grown to hate the past.

See book "Medieval Lives", based on the BBC Series. Talks about medieval life including that the peasants entertained at home, etc.
      Interesting and well worth reading.

Yes let's bring back the middle ages. Even for nobles average life expectancy in England between 1330 and 1479 generally was only 24 years for men and 33 for women

@@edwingrove1442 Misleading statistic. Control for child mortality and the average life expectancy is at least 60. Nobles in times of conflict also generally had lower lifespans than commoners because of assassinations and wars; nobles particiapted in battle at a far higher rate than commoners and often took the most risky battlefield roles (e.g. heavy cavalry) and so a far greater porportion of them died on campaigns.

@@sulphuric_glue4468 yes lets control for the fact most humans died while still infants. Because who cares about all those dead babies. The middle ages were actually great.

I would Imagine they would prefer to die in the thick of the action rather than in a rout. You must have had massive balls to charge into a large army as outnumbered as they often were.

You have a great channel going. Thanks for all your hard work. Also, do you believe the kingdom of Jerusalem and it's people being under constant existential threat affected the amount of court intrigue or civil strife that went on during its existence compared to other medieval kingdoms, nations, sultanates, etc.. Thanks again for all you do.

El Cid was a Spanish Legend, but I'd say the REAL Balian de Ibelin was possibly the most legendary Knight of Jerusalem. The guy fought at Montgisard, survived Hattin, defended Jerusalem with merchants and teenagers, offered to be held as a prisoner to save countless innocents from slavery, stood up to Richard the Lionhearted to remove the fool who destroyed his kingdom, married a Queen/Byzantine Princess, and founded a dynasty of his own. God if only they made a movie about him.......Oh, wait.

I'm no expert but from what I've researched skirmishing was incredibly frequent as well as low-level warfare between local lords with armies ranging from dozens to a few hundred. They could be just as fierce as a massive set-piece battle just with less numbers

    Hebrews 11:14-16 (KJV)
14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
