It’s always nice to see that other cultures taking a liking from our traditions, people do admire what we do for our graduates. It makes me happy that people wants to be part of it.🙏
Best money graduation lei I've seen! BEAUTIFUL!! I love the idea of not using tape to bills, and the dollar bill flowers are unique and beautiful. thanks so much for sharing. I have a lei I have to make in a few weeks, and your way is my CHOICE!
Mahalo nui loa for sharing your crafty knowledge. This is definitely a labor of love. Does anyone else have an evil laugh going through their head at the thought of their child having to undo the lei in order to spend the money? It’s just me? 😂😇❤️
Thanks a bunch for sharing this. My daughter is graduating college June 2024, so I figure if I start now I can make a flower each month with 20's. and some with 50's, so by the end she'll have an awesome lei!
👏👏🔥🔥🔥 oh my goodness thank you so much, beautiful lei and it was easy to follow you. Both the lei and your tutorial were done well. Thank you, look forward to more of your videos ❤❤❤
Loved it but its hard to find a stiff ribbon The satin ribbon i baught doesn’t look good when hang on d neck. It was soft. Hard to find 1.3 size. Could i use 1 1/2 size in thickness?
Hi Megan! Thank you for sharing your culture. I’ll be sure to let everyone know I’m attempting a Tongan lei to give credit 🤙🏽 Quick questions - Do you think I could replace the vinyl twine with ribbon and get the same result? Additionally if not 😂 do you have a video on your page that shows how to secure / tie off the ends? Thank you!!!!
Yes, I do think you can replace it with vinyl twine as I’ve seen that used in polynesian dance costumes 🌺 I’m sure in some of my videos I show how to tie off the end of the lei, but not sure which ones 😂. But I just do my twine in a knot and then braid a few inches so it will be easy to tie on, and knot again at the end of the braid
I’m making this one for my daughter! Thank you! One thing though, I’d love to see a demonstration on a person or a mannequin. I’m trying to figure out how to place this gorgeous lei on a person 🥴
Thank you Megan for this tutorial. I am making this for my daughter’s graduation this year. I use the ribbon on her school color. Are those babies breath flower are real?
Hi Megan, Thank you for sharing this money lei tutorial video. I’m making this money lei for my daughter’s graduation. I love how it looks yet it’s easy to make. What kind of glue do I use to put the tiny flowers on the money?
Yes, it is easy buy time consuming! I just used a little dab of hot glue for the flowers. I put the glue on the rubberband, not the actual dollar bills
Thank you so much for sharing! Being on the east coast on the mainland I struggle to make anything other than carnation leis. Do you know how I could get TI leaves here. Whether I can grow or ship?
Amazing talent! Question- did you use the real baby’s breath or artificial ones? Thank you so so much for sharing. I am making it now for my daughter for her high school graduation. I hope she will love it 💕🙏💐
For my Kahoas fresh and artificial, I use curling ribbon and a long needle. The size that I like is about 5 inches. It is called a long doll needle from Hobby Lobby
what type of ribbon is it????? You stated that it is stiff ribbon; is there a special name for this? Also how many 3 bills make a full lei? BTW I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE your video. I will be making these for my 2 cousins and my daughter (highschool/college grads). THANK YOU
Well that’s just sad @sinapatisotoa1575 because the folding being used is actually origami - Japanese paper folding. What is so wonderful about Hawaii graduations and celebrations is the melding of so many cultures creating new and different traditions. When I graduated, in 1974, yes, 50 years ago, we were all buried in flower lei. This new Micronesian style of lei was not around back then, but I’m sure they would have been embraced warmly. Please open your heart and realize how wonderful it is to share culture with others. Also, our lei 50 years ago were handmade as were the lei given to all the generations before. I’m sending some Aloha and Talofa to your heart.
I'm almost done with mine but have a question. Do I tie ribbon on all the way up the twine or leave plain twine on each side? About how many inches are just plain twine on each side? My new daughter in law is getting her M.S. & is going to be surprised!
@makeitmegan Tying on the ribbon was difficult, for me. You're so fast & yours looks so beautiful. I'd screenshot how mine turned out but I don't see how to do that. Thank you for your video & instructions.
Can you tell me the name of the ribbon you used? I know it's not satin or grossgrain right? Trying to find some. Tha ks so much! Your videos and leis are beautiful!
Here’s the link for the ribbon I used, it is available in several colors and I use it in a lot of my leis ♥️🌺 www.amazon.com/dp/B00DUIC6VK/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_RJZBFE4FSC6NXBXTSFSE?linkCode=ml2&tag=makeitmegan-20
@@makeitmegan I would love to make this for my daughter who is graduating this weekend! I am such an overthinker and would love to know how wide, what type of ribbon, and how much ribbon I will need! 😊
Excited to have found your channel! Where would I find lei ribbon that is braided ( that ribbon is attached to)? Is there something that can be used in place of if unable to find it?
I am using a polyester household twine that can usually be found at an asian market or Amazon. You could also use jute twine. Here is the type of twine I used on Amazon amzn.to/3KVH4Px
The acetate ribbon is expensive (for me) for 1 lei. If I use satin will it be too soft & not hold the shape? Have you tried it in the past & found it looks terrible?
I think it will look fine but it will drape differently and the ribbon will also fray. If you have a Hobby Lobby near you, this ribbon is the same texture and isn’t a bulk roll like the acetate ribbon I use. You would probably need 2 rolls, this ribbon is not in the sewing section it is by the floral and wedding sections. You could also use poly ribbon www.hobbylobby.com/Floral-Wedding/Ribbon-Bows/Ribbon/Green-Double-Face-Satin-Ribbon---1-3-8%22/p/80972653
I heard her say the lay braid that she braided it 40inches long so I assume the length of ribbon roll would be that or longer? She cuts the ribbons in 10in to make the individual ones that are hanging
I used a really small dot of glue and glued it onto the rubber band. You could skip that step all together or use longer pieces of curling ribbon to tie them on and curl them instead ♥️🌺
54- 1 dollar bills. Braided twine. Thick 1/2-1 inch ribbon. Scissors. Curling ribbon of the same color as your thick ribbon. Artificial baby breaths. Needle with a larger eye to sew with the curling ribbon. Small rubber bands, glue (optional)

Best money graduation lei I've seen! BEAUTIFUL!! I love the idea of not using tape to bills, and the dollar bill flowers are unique and beautiful. thanks so much for sharing. I have a lei I have to make in a few weeks, and your way is my CHOICE!
18 money flowers = 52 bills
Adult 32” + 3” strand on each side
10” ribbons
Braided on to 3 white twine
18 flowers total x 3 bills per flower = 54 bills 😇
