Starting with calves is something I learnt a few years back from Kai green. His philosophy was if you use your bigger/ stronger muscles first (quads/ hams) you won’t have the energy to put the effort in to training your calves at the end. That worked for me and was my staple routine for leg days since.

I don't know why people can't figure out that calves and forearms are different, they can be trained every day and need high volume to grow because they're the muscles we use constantly each day

@nolanrj44 you dont have to hit them to use them a lot everyday. You use them when you run or carry stuff. And at my job i sit in a truck and stand 1200+ times per shift which works them a lot

I do a full lower body warm up before every upper body workout. And vice versa. The body is one, therefore the whole body is warmed up. Nothing “heavy”, but over time it becomes the appearance of work, ie as you get bigger and stronger. I primarily just use the leg press for both calf and Quad, I start the leg press with calf pressing slow control then move into explosive calf pressing then leg presses. At my biggest I think they peaked just above 18inches. (But then again generically I had “bigger” calf muscles anyway)

Yeah, I have a friend who always had super muscular calves, and at that point in his life, never went to the gym. Lol.
Big calves definitely seem to heavily reliant on having the right genetics for it. Knowing your realistic limitations and strengths I think is really huge when it comes to working out…just having realistic but smart expectations in general.

My sister, has a ballet book prize, and letters behind her name ,, she starts with these every day 😂 since she was 7 yrs old . While I like to keep my leg ,, below the knee and just as important the muscles of the foot in good athletic shape . It’s that area below the calf ,, that links to the foot , that’s springs you along , the muscles on the top and bottom of your foot etc ,, running , cycling sportsman’s legs . I want to keep these . They are not always the ones that show,, LARGE,, but they are pivotal in sport

Can we just agree calves are genetics. Doesn't matter how much time you spend on them. I'm 30 now, prior military, have walked miles with a heavy ruck. These MFs don't grow. I have tried training them everyday, heavy/light slow / fast full range of motion with pause. And yes i have done more than 100 reps on calves + more. Nah this dude just has better calves insertion. Excuse the rant. Just frustrated, don't get me wrong my calves are strong AF but if you see them. You would say i skip leg day ... FML

    • @slumped9677
      @slumped9677 9 місяців тому +13

Don’t train them like a bro.
      Progressive overload.
Don’t do pump reps, accentuate the stretch at the bottom.
Lengthened portion of the rep is superior for muscle growth.
Get stronger calf’s, dont pump 100s of junk reps.

i played soccer 12 years, iam 185cm in height and my weight back then was like 70kg. I have quite impressive calves from that time. Like those u expect someone with 150kg to have.
I have a short lower leg and in combination with a long calve muscle it looks even bigger.
If you have a long lower leg and a short calve muscle, no work in the world will get you a calve like mine. You can still grow them with progressive overload so it doesnt look shitty, its just that they never will look that impressive.
So yeah you can grow them, but genetic play a role. Just with every other muscle. My back for example is way harder to bring up. So usually it evens out. I would trade my calves for a better back 😅

You can build any big muscle. Will it grow at a different rate as someone else? Definitely. Will it look the same on your body as someone else? No. But, you can definitely grow your calf muscle. I have small quads and glutes but slowly they are growing. I have to really focus on them but they have grown. Just takes longer and more consistency.

I have been starting all my sessions with a decent burn on the stairs. Then I do core or back BEFORE I move into any lifts because that way I know everything is well supported. Just makes sense. Also a good idea to work opposing muscle groups together for the same reason ie make sure you do some back work in your pressing sessions too
