Try Tiger Woods 4-Iron Chipping Technique / It Could Be a Game Changer!?

  • Tiger Woods short game improved tremendously when he added more clubs to his chipping options. He's had particular success with a 4-iron on those long chips where you just want to land the ball on the green or in this case the extremely fast fairways at St. Andrews and let it roll out. He used that shot a few times in the British Open at Hoylake (2006) to get the ball on the ground quickly on those tricky greens.
If you'll notice here, Tiger uses his putting grip (a reverse overlap) because it helps keep his hands working together. You'll probably also notice Tiger is not wearing his glove! Everything else is fundamental to good chipping. He sets most of his weight on his left foot and positions the ball back of center in a narrow but slightly open stance. That helps him make a descending blow into the back of the ball. But before you do anything, read the break and pick a spot just over the fringe, or in this case the fairway, where you want to land the ball.
Just like on a putt, try to keep your head still long after impact. That will help you hit the ball solidly and start it on line...
Ultimately, the secret to a great short-game is self-discovery. Developing a full-fledged short game is a must for any golfer, but how you do and learn the skills it is up to you... so hit that practice green!

I love adverse golf conditions. Not for themselves, but because everyone else seems beaten before they start? It's another challenge of the game. So are bad bounces. They test the character of the player. This idea that everything should be "fair" completely overlooks that dealing with adversity is one of the tests of a golfer.

I'm sure Tiger was taught that very lesson early in his golfing career. Good comment!

There's a video with Woods, Day, & Rory demonstrating their short games while being interviewed. Really interesting listening to them talking to each other comparing notes including bunker play. It's about 25 minutes in length & a must watch.

It would be so hard. I think hes just doing it to see how the ball will roll over the slopes. If you've ever played links golf, you literally cannot get the ball to stop when its dry you have to play it short and roll it. Its next to impossible. Honestly it's incredible he won he twice by as much as he did being from America.

Would you call that motion a long putting stroke, but with more loft?

      It’s a chipping stroke.

@@carpomcdivot7741 No. He’s chipping with a 4i. There doesn’t need to be a whole lot of movement on his part to get the ball moving.

Not in the States. We play target golf thru the air with bunkers that are too easy for pros.

It's a shame the PGA Tour pros don't play on more links-style courses.
