Making a traditional hand planar without cutting it apart first is easier then it sounds. There is no reason to split it into 3 parts first when using hand tools. this is an artistic video on making a hand plane but if you want to see the full How to in detail there is a link below to give you all the information you need.

Beautiful hand plane and video sir. Great work! Watching this was so relaxing, thank you
thanks man!
Love this video and that plane is still one of the nicest I've ever seen :) ॐ
Thanks man. I do love playing with it.
Love that design. I have yet to make my own plane, however I have recently made a new sole for my #27 transitional. It came out rather well (making the tote was harder), so next I want to make a Japanese style plane/kanna. Beech wood is almost impossible to come by over here in Hawaii, so I pretty much use white oak for everything. Not long ago I purchased about a dozen old kanna on eBay for under $100. Half of them had missing cap irons and the other half had cracked or badly damaged blocks or just so worn out the irons wouldn't fit anymore. (To me, they are all priceless bits of history😁) There were a couple that were in okay condition and I've restored pretty good, but what I want to do now is to make a new block for a small piece. It's literally cracked in half and held together with bolts and somebody used it for a drill press table... it's full of holes 🫤. The iron is in good condition and very thick it's the kind that doesn't require a cap iron or a wedge. Just one piece of wood and one chunk of steel. It should be easy enough to reproduce the block, but what I'm wondering is, can I make a block for an iron that once had a cap iron only, ommit the cap altogether. Will it work? Maybe a wedge would be in order?
Any tips or links would be appreciated. Maybe I'll email you some photos later.
Thanks for being interested thus far.
Aloha braddah 🤙🏼
Please keep up the videos dude, especially these longer ones, you're inspiring me to venture into my own woodworking! I love listening to your videos as I tinker. Your instructionals are so helpful, I used your paste wax video last night to make my own. Thanks for the content and please keep it up!
Thanks. That means a lot. I do like making these when possible.
Loved the steely surf rock guitar.
Excellent, really like your videos on jigs and tools
What a wonderful way to show off the building of a gorgeous wooden plane 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks man.
I really, really do enjoy these videos, they engage me, and make me more curious!
Nice artistic theme.
thanks Richard!
Genuine Craftsman.
Beautiful Video
thanks!
Nice! I like the soundtrack
Thanks!
Must say I prefer the long form instructional videos most, but that being said these follow up videos you are doing that shows the complete project in a faster format I still watch because you still get the jest of it and well I believe in supporting the makers who know better than I on these things so do whatcha enjoy man
Ya these artistic videos do not do as well, but I love to watch them personally .
Super Hand Plane, Super Video, Super Music! Thank You!
Thanks! I like putting these together.
Great music choice to go with the video!
thanks Jonathan!
What is not to like, both the project and the video style! Nice job James.
thanks. these videos do not normally do as well, but I like them.
Cool build, James! That thing is a beast!
Thanks Bruce!
Very groovy version of the build. Awesome
Lol thanks!
Sweet! Flexing some editing muscle for sure and just for the record ... I like both styles.
LOL yup. thanks man. I like putting these out from time to time.
It's here! Turned out great
Thanks Clay.
very good video. Love the old school wood plane.
Thanks. It is a joy to play with.
I actually like both style of videos.... keep up the good work- nicely done on this plane.
Thanks Walter. More to come.
One of your best! Great choice of music. Rasping and filing to the beat!
Thanks Gene. This was a fun one to put together.
Nice work James! Look at those shavings!
Thanks man. That was fun.
I dig it.
thanks!
I like these artistic videos. Do make more. Thank you for all you shown us so far.
Thanks. These do not do as well, but I like them so they will come from time to time.
OMG that dramatic music 😍
Lol I do like making these.
Wow, you put an awesome touch on a traditional type plane - also enjoyed the "running from the sheriff" sort of background tune!!
Lol thanks! I do like spagety Western for a background.
Awesome work James especially the Chisel and file work!
thanks Opa!
Love this style. Great job james
Thanks Jake. I like doing these from time to time.
This is really good. Thanks for posting it.
my pleasure David!
Sweet!
Thanks David.
Personally I love these videos, beautiful plane take care my friend
Thanks Thomas I do like them too.
Now, to figure out uses for those amazing curls! ❤️
Lol conpost pile for these.
Instead of packing peanuts
Love the music on this video!

Great plane, you did a great job!
Thanks Andy.
Great work James! 👍👊 Thank you for such a relaxing experience! 🙂
Thanks Fred. My pleasure.
Magic!!! I Love woodplanes🍻
thanks! you and ma both!
Excellent video and love the music!
Keep up the great videos!!!!
Thanks Samuel. My pleasure!
James, congratulations on 60K. Meant to put this on ur last video. Did u even notice? I didn't even hear u mention it b4.
thanks Russ. I noticed it, but do not want to make a big deal of it. lots more fun to go!
New sub here, really liking the 'artistic' style video's. AvE does those on occasion as well, and watching people, craftsmen actually, set to nice music is a very nice change of pace.
thanks. that is where this channel is going more and more. I am moving most of the educational videos to the second channel for the hand tool geeks!
Beautiful!
Thanks William.
Great video - Really enjoyed this format and would like to see more.
Keep up the good work 👍
thanks! I feel much the same. I like them, but they never do as well as the instructional ones so i do not do as many, but I like them so I put them up from time to time.
What? Blue tape! They didn't have blue tape in the 1800's. You modern day sellout to true craftsmanship. How dare you. (Psst... nice video, very well shot/edited. And the plane's OK too. ;) )
wortheffort The Green tape is acceptable though...... I will allow it. In my mercy. 😁
I read they dug up a roll of it in Pompay
wortheffort lol busted
How would you know,? they only had black and white photos.
Richard Wright they shot RAW back then. The color data wast lost.
Nice job James. Very good looking plane!!
Thanks Becky!
Beautiful hand plane James! Thanks for sharing.😎👍JP
my pleasure man!
Nice tool. What is a bevel angle on the blade? Is it comfortable to work without back handle on the plane? Thank you.
the bevel angle is 25 degrees. it is bevel down with a bed angle of 30 degrees. Many traditional planes do not have a tote, it is very comfortable. especially when you carve and shape it to your hand.
Fantastic build but, no dad joke? That's half the reason I watch ;)
LOL sorry I drop the intro from the artistic videos some people are just too impatient for the good parts. LOL
I will eventually try this project, so I would like to ask a question. Do you think adding one step after the build is complete. That step being placed in a vacuum chamber with Cactus Juice. My thought is, over time of wood on wood scraping, the plane being impregnated with the epoxy would extend the life of the plane as well as prevent any minor distortion in the plane when humidity levels change. Do you think there would be a benefit at all or just a waste of time and Cactus Juice? Very much enjoy the videos. Thanks for sharing.
that would extend the usefulness of the plane. on a traditional plane the rule of thumb is that 1/4" would last 5 years as you have to re flatten it each season when the moisture level swings. stabalising would change that so that you would only have to flatten it when the soal was gouged from use. but you would have to get a BIG vacume chamber to fit this one in it.
Wood By Wright Thanks for the reply! I am going to give that a try.
Great plane and video! Questions do you need a jointer plane to make one and why you made the groove olin the middle of the plane's blade bed?
thanks man. No the jointer is just easier you can use any plane and check the bottom with a strait edge and winding sticks, or just sand paper on glass. the grove houses the bolt on the under side of the iron. that connects the chip-breaker to the iron. If you want to see more detail I have a full build series where I go int this in detail on each step. this is just an over view video.
@@WoodByWright thank you I will check the full series.
Hmm I wonder if one could do a half inch round plane...to do inlet work
Sure. I'm generally called a molding plane. They come in all different shapes and sizes.
Hi. Wonderful videos!
I have a question.
Can a n 5 Stanley Hand Plane be used as a jointer plane?
I'm asking because I'm here in Argentina and it's nearly impossible to get a bigger hand plane than that.
Sure. If the board you are jointing you may need to check it's straitness another way. But it will do the job.
Thank you very much for your reply. It's real nice when youtubers take the time to reply us viewers.
I'm going through your videos like popcorn.
This music seems strangely familiar to me...😉 love this video mr Wright.
LOL wonder why!
James I love the cheerful nature of your usual videos but I also loved this one too. It's definitely a 'both / and' world (not either / or!) and there's definitely a place for both!!!
By the way, are you still finding time to run?
BW Andy
Thanks Andy. Yes I am still running 50-70 miles a week. Got to love it.
I'd like to see more of the artistic builds. The instructional ones are fine, but sometimes I just want to see the process and not have to listen too. I'm one of the more visual people.
thanks Richard. I feel much the same. I like them, but they never do as well as the instructional ones so i do not do as many, but I like them so I put them up from time to time.
Time to buy a cheap plane and use that to make some real planes!
Finally someone who can make a REAL handplane .No laminations ...wow! I just love your shoes . I have a pair without the carving best workshop shoes ever.
So true. wooden shoes are both comfortable and protective! love them. that is my preferred way to make a plane.
Great Video! Really beautiful plane. Where are the wings? 😀
Lol I keep those in the hanger.
Anybody know what finish he’s using at 4:17 ?
That is homemade boiled linseed oil and then a paste wax finish.
You go ahead and do your artistic video - I like them just fine, for me, it is a chance to view something from a different perspective. I saw the build and think this video is of equal value. Mark
Thanks Mark. I do like them from time to time.
Stop jerkn around at the puter and send me that wonderful tool.... Hey if you were to build a scrub from scratch/scrap what ° angle would you go with ?????
For a scrub plane I like 45 degrees.
thank you James
Sonofabich, that was cool. I need a cigarette.
Ugh! Way too cinematic, you're showing the rest of us up! This is really cool though man.
Lol thanks man!
Popcorn and spaghetti westerns.
So To make a plane you need one
Thick sheet of glass and some sandpaper stuck to it seems good enough to get a flat surface to me, works good enough for sharpening tools.. No need for a plane.
And you can also chisel a surface square and flat, takes patience and more time but it is very possible.
Always lol.
Using a plane to make a plane feels like cheating
all depends on what your rules are for the game you are playing.
Music is bad
Thanks. I will use more of it in the future! Always love good feedback.
