Colonia del Sacramento - Peace at Last on the Río de la Plata, Uruguay | Treasures of the World

Colonia del Sacramento, once founded by the Portuguese, is the oldest European settlement in present-day Uruguay. Its strategically favorable location in the bay of the Río de la Plata led to constant territorial disputes between Spain and Portugal, resulting in sieges and destruction of the city. It wasn't until 1828, with the founding of the independent Republic of Uruguay, that the dispute between colonial powers came to an end. Colonia del Sacramento was founded in the last days of January 1680 by Don Manuel Lobo, Governor of Rio de Janeiro, on behalf of Prince Regent Pedro II of Portugal. Pedro II wanted to establish a foothold on the coast of the Río de la Plata to defend his empire.
The old town, with its low colonial houses, wrought-iron grilles, tranquil squares, and abundant greenery, exudes the charm of a miniature colonial-era city at every corner. The partially well-preserved bastions of San Miguel, San Pedro, and Santa Rita are as much evidence of the past as the remains of the city walls. A cultural and historical landmark is the Cathedral, dating back to the 17th century, which is the oldest church in Uruguay.
