The Mormon Church's Role In The Increase In LGBTQ Youth Suicides In Utah

  • Utah’s suicide rate has tripled since 2007 and suicide is the leading cause of death among the state’s children ages 10 to 17. Empirical data is hard to delineate, but anecdotally and logically there seems to be a strong connection between Utah’s large Mormon population, the church’s denunciation of same-sex LDS couples and the community’s beleaguered LGBTQ youth.

    growing up in the church, some of the most homophobic people i have known in my life were adults and other kids my age, in the ward i was in. maybe my ward was special but i still don't have the feeling that that the majority of mormons at least in utah are begging for the prophet to say that gay people are ok to be in the church. i get the feeling that the bishop we had back when i went to church, definitely wouldn't have accepted it, he was very culturally right wing. being transgender wasn't even really a known thing back then so that's a whole other can of worms. if one of the boys was transgender and came out, and came to church every sunday in a dress, the bishop and several other young men's/scout leaders probably would have encouraged the other boys to ridicule and abuse them about it and probably would have taken part themselves. not openly in front of everyone, but when you're in your little isolated groups in scout meetings for example or out away from everyone at a scout camp. it's the kind of thing they'd pretend to accept and say they accept when most of the ward is present because of course you don't just completely contradict something the president of the church says, but just because he declares that people should be ok with something isn't going to make their biases and bigotry disappear. anyone who thinks that is how it works is naïve, you're kidding yourself.

    The tripling of the suicide rate since 2007 may be tied the smartphone. The first iphone came out in 2007. Gen-Z and Millennials report a high rate of loneliness and isolation, even though they are the most connected generation ever. The internet and smartphones have their uses, but they have lead to a rapid change in how people interact. It has many negative consequences. Social bullying, public shaming, materialism, individuality, and a need to belong are high. You throw in LGBTQ stigma and shame in high schools and social media and there can be trouble. LGBTQ youth in Utah also have to contend with a culture of perfectionism and pro-family rhetoric. This has to have an affect on gay youth.

    • @elliefuller3667
      @elliefuller3667 2 роки тому

      The internet is a double edged sword. It can bring about negativity and loneliness, but it can also bring happiness and positivity, purely on what you’re viewing. For a lot of teens who struggle with other factors in their life (family issues, religious trauma, sexuality or gender, etc) their phone can be their escape. That was my case, growing up a lesbian teen in Utah, under a strict Mormon household. My phone was the one place I could have true freedom, and in true teenager fashion, I abused that. I wasn’t looking at positive stuff all the time, so it made my mental health worse. Eventually, I got sick of it and started over. I was only looking at stuff that made me feel better, not worse. Huge impact. My phone became a safe place, where I could pretend like my situation was much better, where I could look forward to the future in which I would have independence and live on my own. It’s important to keep in mind what you’re viewing, not to just get off your phone. That only delays the core of the issue. You need to help yourself by resisting the temptation to look at negativity. Avoid doom scrolling. If you have a hard time avoiding stuff like that, try to put your phone down more often, take up new hobbies. I started skateboarding because I couldn’t avoid it all too well, I still skate today because it’s a fun hobby and there’s so much to keep learning, no matter what point you reach.

Any one that ACTUALLY attends an lds church sees that this video is completely full of lies. Same with the pathetic people that come on here just to comment crap about the church. It's sad but the internet is full of pathetic ppl :/

    The Church is not a cult, just wanted to throw that in there. The main message of the Church is a message of love, and I know that seems contradictory because of the so-called "anti-gay rhetoric" in the Church. It is not anti-gay. Those who say that, I feel, have a deep misunderstanding of what we teach. There are many principles in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but the most important one by far is to love our neighbor and God. Don't take "the Church" as "God." For those who are struggling with these things I would encourage you to always be in peace with God, not with the Church necessarily. I know God loves each of us and that he cares for each of us. Because we haven't been very exposed to gay rhetoric in the church, we are clumsy when talking about it, and can make mistakes that might offend, but please, don't take that as what the Church is about. God and His church are perfect, but he uses imperfect people as his instruments to help on Earth. I wish I could be there when you struggle and say "I love you and God does too," but even if I can't be, I wish that you can find comfort in love's God regardless of what members say. What one member or leader says isn't necessarily what God says. Let's make that distinction clear. I hope we can always be able to discern, and feel when it is really God speaking to us, that we can build our faith around what really matters, so when hard times come, it doesn't plummet.

      Carmen Montoya hi, soon to be former member of the church. The guidelines say for LGBT members not to call themselves lesbian, gay, bi, etc, and to be prayerful about who they come out to. Coming out is not for anyone but the person, and can be incredibly liberating from shame that is brought on by being told to basically sit down and shut up. That is anti- gay rhetoric, and is incredibly damaging to young people who are figuring out about who they are.

      @@cursedwithsetience4017 I agree with almost everything you said, except I don't feel that's anti-gay. Rather, I think the way we talk in the church about LGBTQ people is clumsy (meaning that it can come out as anti-gay, when it really isn't) because we haven't been exposed as much to the topic. The reason for calling LGBTQ people like that instead of lesbians, gays, etc. it's because not everyone self-identifies with the label, it's a label after all, and it's not everything someone is. I think it's similar so how the church also tells us not to call ourselves "mormons." Some LGBTQ people don't necessarily identify themselves as lesbian, gay, etc. especially if they have been raised in the Church, where it's hard to do so. And I think praying to who you should come out to is a good idea, especially if you believe in God. Precisely because it is as personal as you say it is. Precisely because we don't want to perpetuate that shame brought on people, it's important to come out to the people one feels is right to. Why wouldn't one pray for guidance on such a personal and special process?

    Suicides are not the church's fault. The church has always taught that God loves everyone, and that suicide is wrong. We believe in treating lgbtq folks the same we treat people struggling with a pornography addiction or cigarette addiction ... with love and compassion. Our Savior Jesus Christ loves all of us more than we can comprehend. He never gives us a challenge we cant overcome.... If we rely of Him! We are here on this planet to grow learn and progress. I've learned sooooo much from being married to my wife and becoming a Dad it is the best feeling in the world. I believe our Heavenly Father wants us to experience being a parent, I believe its one of the key elements to our progression. God wants us to grow learn and progress and having a family is soooo important. when I'm old and gray I hope to have grand kids that will be another learning experience.... Being gay means you will never have a chance to create a human being and God does not want us to miss that oppertunity. The ability to create life is maybe the greatest of Gods gift to us.

      So if having a spouse and raising children is God’s end goal of happiness for us, why can’t a homosexual couple just adopt? Even then, it’s presumptuous to assume that just because being a father and husband has brought great happiness to you, that the same rule should apply to everyone. Although my parents derive much of their life’s purpose and happiness from being Mormon, I have found happiness on the outside.
      Plus, if god is so hellbent on us achieving happiness through procreation, then what’s his plan for impotent men, infertile women, or people with disabilities that prevent them from functioning as parents or in a sexual relationship?

Its really hard to adopt by the way and there are so may great couples like my brother and his wife that want to adopt.
      I don't believe Gay people should be able to adopt when there are tons of great couples that could give those kids a Mother and a Father.
      Gays people have the ability to have kids but they CHOOSE not too by dating the same sex!!! and when they adopt kids they take away that opportunity from couples who cant have kids. How is that fair???
      My wife was pregnant with twins and she had a miscarriage 4 months in. but I believe we will meet our twins in heaven. Family's can be together forever! Eternity is a looooooooooong time. The more family the better! Nothing is more important than family!!! God can help us overcome any trial or temptation through our Savior. Gay people exist because... MAN + WOMEN = Baby but if they don't follow there parents footsteps they will die and thats it... the family chain stops with them!!!!
