Volvo has lovely seats, looks positively posh inside. Nice of it to not spit out it's brake pads.... had that happen on a Mercedes sprinter automatic....
Great to see the 740 out and about, and congratulations on the MoT pass. My 740 had its MoT last week. Straight pass, no advisories, after I welded up a small rust hole on a chassis leg over New Year.
Volvo is definitively my favourite car on the fleet, I just bought a 940 so I'm probably slightly biased, but I loved it the second you bought it, hence why I got one myself!
Been really pleased with my 1996 940 LPT auto estate. Bought in 2016 when cheap. Paid £250! Amazing value. Used as my works van. Rebuilt the front suspension and got the AC working last summer. Run in at 209,000 miles.
Isn't a 940 actually a 740 but with different front and rear end?
@@fauzanriez9472Yeah, the later 740s looked more like 940s, but the 940 changed a few more things about the design, bigger headlights, higher boot line, different rear lights etc.

In the voice of the late great Murray Walker. The lights go out and they are go, go go. The Volvo got a great start but the MX5 (Eunos) is going up the inside followed by the Alfa on the very first turn of the Rustival GP..... To win you must finish first but first you have to finish..... Well done Matt on getting the cars (mostly) ready for Rustival.
I thought the hand brake was shoes in the middle of the disc like you w204. And that cable does not look like it is attached to the caliper. and you have to wind back caliper hand brakes. I think you best check.
Is the handbrake not shoes on the inside of the hat on the 740?

@@drinkyourpgtips. That's what I thought. Since they have that system on newer cars with floating calipers that can accommodate handbrake on disc.

Best car on the fleet. Biased as have a 1996 940 LPT Estate 2.3 B230FK in standard tune. Great car. Had a 1989 240GLT Estate for 10 years and prior a 1986 740GLE estate with red interior. B230K.
Nah, the W123 wipes the floor with it.

@@jameskyle380 The 740 has probably the best galvanized body ever made. Apart from the very early ones, the rust protection was amazing. The W123, W124 and W201 (such a terrible car) were bad for rust. Even the W211 was poor until Mercedes finally started Galvanizing their cars 03/04. But I've never been a fan, now the 850, that was awesome.
That stereo is pure retro gold and worth any cost to restore it. Mad that it locks itself though, never had that issue oddly. At least it’s got that incredible turning circle to help get it out. Could hear the brakes humming slightly when you pulled away a few times. Looking forward to Rustival tomorrow
There's a 760 local to me in Navy blue on a private plate. It just looks so different to everything on the road these days. Glad it's passed!
Very lucky getting that ultra rare Volvo MTS audio unit ! That was top of the range back in the early 1980's before RDS was introduced. Sweden invented that.. ..MTS = .Microprocessor Tuning System . It works in the same way as our modern RDS BUT you have to program your favourite Frequencies of the transmitters in the area you drive in so that it is able to scan the memory for the strongest signal and switch to it automatically plugs on the back for a foot switch to go up to the next station, an amplifier and a graphic equaliser. try and find those ! . Certainly the most trouble free and dependable car in your fleet .
You need to address that bit of rust appearing on the top of the rear panel above the rear number plate before it gets any worse!

The radio options for these did vary by market but generally higher trim options had a remote amp that the radio was wired into. Since this car is a pretty basic spec but that new radio is fancy maybe its wrired for the auxiliary amp and thats why it doesn't want to work?

Well done. Glad it's back on the road. It's been off the road since I bought mine. Glad it didn't need much. Just put 1700miles on mine touring around Ireland. Speedo died. Only fault though.
I seem to remember on the front brakes you only changed the flexi hoses on one circuit because the others were seized.
On the rear callipers you should have really sprayed the pistons with brake clean when they were extended from the cylinders to reduce any sticking or corrosion….
I have enough on my plate getting myself and my one car to Rustival! I look forward to seeing you and your fleet there.

MOT's with any amount of cars, more than 2 is always 'fun'. Even underway to the MOT station, a lot can happen.
Wonderfull though that everything is on schedule for rustival. Kinda bummed it's a bit far for me, but hey maybe someday.
I try to spread the cars so I always have 1 of 4 to drive. Twingo and 🐍are the first two comming up early March and mid April. Calibra in summer and Baleno in September.
I expect you're glad they have power steering as would be a real struggle without to shuffle around. Don't dispose of old bedsheets or duvet covers as make good dust covers for the cars.
Lo Matt, Spring has almost sprung. Rustival is here (nearly). Don't think i am gonna make it this year. Lookn at the weather forecast it aint good. Remember i/we are North of the border and the forecast is for snow maybee. Weather people cannae make their mind up how far up the Snow is coming.. Shame but i hope will get an update from you via your posting. Enjoy.
Surprised there are no R clips retaining the pins in the callipers. The spring stops them rattling but not vibrating out. If you've not been in there, a good idea to remove the discs and check the hand brake shoes and mechanisms. Linings are prone to coming off when the glue gets old.

I was watching a UK Barn Finds video before this and the farm there looks ginormous, although a lot of the roofing looks bad.
13:51 The Hand/ Parking Brake is inside the rear discs so you may have a sticky arm that pulls the shoes apart for example.
The rear handbrake pads that design for replacing the pads l love them l have replaced a lot of disc brake pads in my 50 years of driving and they are the easiest also how often do we forget the number plate light for th e rego check in N.S.W Australia l have totally fixed that problem on my 1997 Hilux l fitted an LED

Matt you do know the handbrake on the 740 is a drum brake inside the brake disc pulling the handbrake on to test the calipers does not work the calipers, I bet someone else has said this already below the shoes are the same as the 240 series cars
You need wheel trolley's for all the cars in the bar! MOT is always ''fun'' with older cars, especially ones that aren't used daily or weekly. My ur quattro failed last week on the steeringrack. I knew it had play on it, but it was more then I thought. Now hunting for a revised one.

@@furiousdriving yes, not to hard to find. Prices are all over the place. Looking for a ZF one, seen a couple. First I need to remove the old steering rack, which is going to be a big job. Not complaining, like to tinker on the quattro. Restoration was over 20 years ago, some mechanical parts are getting worn.
I'd love to see you get a more spacious barn to house and work on your cars because that small one looks like a nightmare to use. Another 100k subscribers should get you there!
It would not be a Volvo if a bulb was not out. I hope you exercised the pistons on the rear calliper's they are renowned for sticking.
Problem is too many cars and not enough space, need to get rid of some. More space =more cars😳. This is hoarding on an epic scale!

Hi Matt, is it me, or is the offside indicator/side light hanging off the Volvo. It looked like it in the last clip.
same caliper setup on the volvo 850 rear.
The velour seats are lovely in that Volvo.
What an absolute pain in the rear shuffling those cars like that.
Shame I have work on the 9th, would surely have gone to check out all the motors

Not seen pins in brakes without split pins to stop them droping out must be the springs job to i guess well dine matt donny
there is an expanding ring at the top end of the pin that keeps it in place

the odd dashboard makes fitting normal radios very awkward in this unfortunately
@furiousdriving Back in the day you used to be able to get special plates to fit Volvo dashboards that had the standard DIN hole to enable you to fit any standard DIN sized audio unit
It is not cheap in Sweden anymore. I had one in 2006-2007 and I paid the equivalent of 500 euros for it back then. These days they sell for 10 times that amount, at least if they are worth having.
Are you sure there ever was a backlight on the screen of that radio? I'm not. Never actually seen that radio in any car though. Didnt know many people with 700 series at the time and I most of all remember Knutsson stereos in volvos from my childhood but they seem to have been aftermarket. BTW A 700 is a pretty rare beast here in sweden hardly ever see them anymore. Maybe it's different in other parts of the country though. They had a pretty limited production run and the 900 wasnt quite as frumpy so I guess the boy racers prefer those.
No, but the Pioneers and Alpines I had in the early '90s were backlit so Id assume the flagship model would be!
When we arrived at the Volvo museum a local group arrived in a red 740 at the same time, they couldnt believe we'd driven all the way in it!
@@furiousdriving That must be an 80's stereo though, early 90's would probably have had CD option if it was premium. Does it have a cd changer plug on the back?

Matt,your handbrake is separate brake shoes that are inside the hub. The pads are purely footbrake

The rear pads have nothing to do with the handbrake on this model! The handbrake uses shoes that are on the inside of the rear disk , and dont ever really wear out but will certainly be susceptible to " rust jacking" which causes the shoes to swell up and bind on the drum. They are an absolute pig to replace , but yours seem to be just okay at the moment.
Obviously you know your cars… but looking at the shape of the disc design, are you sure the handbrake isn’t inside with shoes… my 1987 Carlton was like that, disc brakes for pedal and handbrake on drum …? The middle of those rear discs looks similar to how I remember the Carlton design..🤔
