  • This 1988 Volvo 740 GLE has done over 430,000 miles! Yes, you did read that correctly! To the moon and back is 451,246 miles - can this Volvo make it? We'll give it a go...
Bought on a whim at Anglia Car Auctions for £860, join us for a first look at the car, before we put it in for an MOT.
IF we can get the car MOT'd, the mission will be to put those extra miles on it as quickly as possible. Let us know in the comments below of any good events for an 80's brick like this.
If you haven't subscribed already, please do so in order to get all the UK Barn Finds notifications.

Had a 740 estate 325000 it had a steering rack, a distributor, alternator., a windscreen and three petrol pumps.
    And the usual break pads
Did another five years after I sold it.
35 to the gallon and a mug of oil between changes.
    They go for ever.

If you’re not fussy or ‘precious’ about cars, but cleverly like a good pedigree car that lasts and lasts, this is a cracker. Mind you it looks well maintained all it’s life. It may have had plenty of new parts in all that time. That always helps!

These cars are bullet proof, you'll have no problems doing another 20,000 miles. A fellow UA-camr Geoff Buys Cars loves these, especially the estate versions. This model, I think was range topping.

The biggest car mistake i made was selling my 1990 740 estate, 140k on the clock and i can say it was the best car that i owned, pity they don't make them like that any longer, they just kept on going.

I used to be the proud owner of one of these cars, and when I sold it many years ago it had 180 on the clock ,it was the only car I have ever owned and never had to replace a part apart from the clutch. But it used to be a very heavy on fuel.

Love it. That'll do another 20k and some no problem.
The big 500 is in sight!
Note the Cambelt is 4 years or 48k on these, so it is due on time. Its a dead easy (and therefore cheap) job on these so recommend getting it done. (The belt on mine stripped on the way home from buying it, and it hit all 4 intake valves, ending up with the cam 40degrees advanced but it kept running and somehow survived!! )

The grab handles on the drivers side is deleted but as it's a car made for right and lefthand drive tge place is there for it. If it was left hand drive that handle would be missing. Great car. We had a 76 244DL here in Australia for 15 years when I was growing up.

I run a 109k - 2006 XC70 D5 Lux for my fishing trips. The ream of maintenance & service paperwork that came with it totted up to £12800. Mostly Volvo dealership. If the old girl ever lets go I plan to replace it with a 740/760 maybe a 940/960. In the past I ran a 4x4 for fishing, as I often end up offroad (mild) accessing river etc, 95% of my driving is road based so the Volvo is superb, however they are surprisngly good in the soft stuff.

My dad nearly bought a brand new one in 1991 but instead went for its replacement the 940. The 700 series was supposed to have replaced the 200 series, but they were so popular they carried on making them until 1993, the year after production of the 700 series stopped, which means between 1990 and 1992 all 3 series were being produced

From experience, th old tub will slowly grow on you, they aren't fast, tho they can be made to be, but they're exemplary comfy mile munchers.
I've got a 93 945, 350,000 miles, poverty spec, non turbo, 2.0 litre slug, but I happily got into mine and drove to Poland to do a bike swap, following a drunken online deal, didn't miss a beat. One tip, replace bulbs in pairs, th system is a bit sensitive to it, took many hours of baffled shouting at mine before I twigged it.
Lakes autos, wyboston on th A1, Volvo breakers, for th harder to source bits, but there's massive forum and social media support for these.
Like I said, give her a few weeks to settle in and for yourselves to adjust to th Volvo way, and you'll soon wonder why it took so long for a redblock to find its way into your life.

    • @UKBarnFinds
      @UKBarnFinds  Рік тому

This is an awesome reply and cheers for the tip about the bulbs. Claire’s away with the kids this week, so I’ve be been rolling around in the 740 (mainly to takeaways, but don’t tell her that 😂). I love it! A few things to sort and improve, but it’s unusual to get into an 80’s car, for me, and not feel that different to the cars around you. The size and the way it drives make me think it must have been something special, back in the day. Usually, I feel like something’s going to let me down in an old car, but not with the Volvo. Now I’ve cursed it…😂

No worries, I hope it turns out as good as it appears to be, and there's almost nothing you can't do yourself, on a normal basis.
I snagged myself a Merc a few weeks ago, a 2000 s210 E320cdi, and despite it being newer, with only 55k and a full Mercedes history, and it's almost showroom standard condition, it just doesn't come up to anywhere near th Volvo in terms of every metric I apply. Tho I'm talking estates here, I didn't really consider estates until I accidentally bought my first Volvo 945, my then partner lived 50 miles away, I blew my car up driving over for th weekend, and had to be in work at 0300 Monday, so I bought th first car eBay had that was within 50 miles, ended by Sunday lunchtime and was under 500 quid... I no longer see th point in buying a saloon, you get th same car if you get an estate, just with more room and greater practicality and I think estates look far better....but, despite this Merc only costing 50 quid, and being far 'better' than my Volvo, I suspect th Merc is just going to be th Volvo backup vehicle, whilst I spend a year sprinkling glitter and polishing my maroon luxobarge.
They do drive well, and yeah, they wallow a bit in corners, but they actually stick to th road surprisingly well...she'll romp to another 20k and if th services are maintained, you can easily put another 0 on that...if it's a 2.3 it's a non interference engine, so you don't have to worry about th belt, if it's a bit old, 2.0L engines are interference tho, but a belt is cheap and it's about as easy as it gets, plenty of online tutorials for tips, they're so easy, work wise, that I was able to talk my missus thru doing a belt and head gasket change, and she'd never ever laid a spanner on anything bar kids bicycles, and we did it all in a day( I'd just got out of hospital after a few convenient heart attacks, anything to get out of th tiling) but it needed doing and she said I wasn't allowed to do it...
Plus, street cred, I may be almost 60, but there's still that inner grin when 'dem yoot dem' say 'cool car mate' and these redblocks really are...humble ones too, not just th 600bhp fire breathing drift racers and street sleepers....
