At first I was going to try to replace the turbo myself, but after some research, I think I might pay someone to install it, although l, I do have access to every tool known to man so I’m not sure.
i love that i watch videos after i got them both off, as a man with no patience it a was tough lol but was not that bad over all love my 2002 ford f550 enjoy guys and great work on the video, mabey if someone could upload a video or tag a link on showing the correct way to clean the turbo/pedalstool that would be helpful, thanks guys.
Remove the left side fender inner liner.... Remove the exh Down Pipe ( turbo to muffler pipe) .... Pull the 8 bolts and 4 nuts from the UPPIPES (exh Manif to Collector { pipes are called adapters and the Y pipe piece a Collector]) 2 bolts ... Then pull 4 bolts and remove the pedestal........ I JUST DIS THIS JOB AND DON'T let anyone tell you that the Up Pipes cant be removed before the turbo adn cpllector.... Then remove the turbo and the collector as an assy together... Reverse this order pedestal ... then turbo with the adapter torqued to it BEFORE INSTALL ... then UP PIPES only one difficult is PASS SIDE both flanges have to be manipulated to install the pipe, it will take at least about 26 inches of extentions to get the top bolts pipe to collector.... TAKE IT AS FACT I JUST DID IT ..... everyone said pipes cant come out withour or prior to turbo pull--- COMPLETE BS FOLLOW THE ABOVE ORDER nad you will save yourself many hours and physical abuse ........
I have worked on 7.3 for years and the OBS turbo is the biggest pain in the ass to do. Those flange bolts and the pedestal bolts are almost impossible to get to. Your right if you don’t have patience do not try it because it will frustrate the hell out of you. Good job on that and have fun with your 7.3. Great motors.
I'll trade your truck for e350 7.3 diesel because changing fuel pump is 3 x more work then that pickup truck. I kinda regret buying a van with 7.3 diesel engines. I love the drive tran, but not a ford van.
Thank u for showing how to do it right, Only video I have found, It was still a serious pain in ass to get out but your video really helped when got stuck on back bolts . Thanks again
I just took off the turbo on a 96 fsuperduty chassis cab and I had to burn the bolts, and cut and pray, lol verry stubborn assembly, but in the trucks defense,it's got upwards of a 600,000+ miles and a flood under it's belt, lol
How hard was the driver side bottom 15mm nut. I got the other 3 out np. But the driver side i have been on it for hrs. Seems like the swivel socket gets caught in a bind then pops off from the nut. Letting it sit in pb blaster over night to see if that works
The best penetrating oil I have found is called Aerokroil ,works great, you wouldn’t believe all the tools I have, two snap on electric roll around boxes ,stuffed with tools both boxes, every once in awhile I run into a job where I don’t have tool I need, you do a good job, keep it up, I love my 96 obs 7.3
Hi :) this is a great video, thanks for it! ...wish I had found it Before taking on my own turbo, hahaha.... Hey, I have a tiny budget So instead of buying a full set of thin wall swivels I went on Ebay for a 3/8 drive 15mm SnapOn, and 10mm Matco (both used) I was scared of anything less than those high dollar ones maybe breaking from the angles and torque needed to break the flange bolts loose. With the 15mm on the flange, I didn't need my 6" swivel extention. I used a standard 6" with a breaker and a bigger long breaker over that--after a week of PB Blasting it all :) Michael Detweiler, my 15mm bottom flange were bolts instead of nuts also!! I'm figuring this just means that someone before me took time to do turbo stuff, may been why all 4 bolts broke loose pretty easy for me. A suggestion....I used an old rear view mirror off of a Harley (has a wide angle view) and got it in a good place against the firewall, then duct taped the rod coming out the backside of the mirror, to the firewall. Because even tho I'm a girl with small girl hands---I couldn't fit a mirror, my hand, and the socket all behind the turbo! taping off the mirror free'd me up to still see the bottom bolts, and roll around while fighting the swivel angles! Next, i'm hoping the pedestal bolts will be easy, because the valley under it is cleared out since I installed a Driven Diesel E fuel conversion 2 years ago. (no fuel lines under the pedestal) Appologies for writing so much here!! I just now got those frikkin flange bolts broke loose after sitting on it broken down out front for a year, having to walk past it to fuckin bus stop grrrr. I'm not from where I live now and have no help, and had zero diesel experience till this truck, but love this! Gonna check into your other videos later. All I have around where I live are a bunch of stuck up high performance aftermarket diesel/4x4 bolt on shops. They see a chic coming to ask questions and think I'm trying to get free work. LOL, nope just need some diesel savvy (friendly!!!) brains to pick!
Great video. I have all flange bolts out and three pedestal bolts. I’ve loosed the rear pass pedestal bolts all the way, but the bolt won’t come out due to up pipes. An ideas to remove turbo? Mines loose but won’t pull out
If you’re doing the transfer pump while you’re in there you can remove it gain access to the bolts underneath of the pedestal that separate the turbo from the pedestal. Then the pedestal is a piece a cake to removed with the turbo removed.
How did you removed the ebpv housing? Got the 3 12 point bolts off, and the disconnected the rod from under the turbo but won't come off. Try putting a flat head and hammering it to come off but no luck.
Get a pry bar and go to town on it..just started mind today. The 15mm nut on the drive side bottom turbo flange is the one im stuck on. Having second toughts about doing this
Great Video, I appreciate your detail. I have all the confidence in the world now that I will be able to get my turbo out now. I know this is a slightly older video... but where did you get that front bumper? It's beautiful!!!
Man!!... You have no idea how much you helped me man... I got stuck where you got stuck and i literally put a sheet over the engine and closed the hood and walked away lol. I am going to order the parts from Amazon and get it done! Thank you a million times over I was starting to get mega frustrated NO ONE else bothered to humble themselves on you tube and admit where it gets hard on the 1995-1997 powerstrokes but instead show the diesel out and "kinda" talk about it. Thanks man you should have more views than what you do.
READ MY COMMENT IF YOU ARE GETTING READY TO DO THIS ... and always replace the fuel line to the pass bank rear while its easy and always replace the tube hanger with a new fresh one..
I freakin torched the head off the lower driver turbo flange bolt. Was hopelessly rounded off. My lower 2 were bolts not nuts like most. Bonus the heat and slag freed up my stuck EBPV! Which I'm getting rid of. Another fun part about doing this is being suspended on your gut over the fender all day.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Spray EVERYTHING with penetrating oil. I custom made an offset socket because I didn't wanna take the turbo apart in the truck
I love you man! never would have gotten this without you!!!
Haha thanks brother glad I was able to help!
I did this job recently, It’s a pain, just gotta have patience
Excellent vid, thanks for the pointers!
At first I was going to try to replace the turbo myself, but after some research, I think I might pay someone to install it, although l, I do have access to every tool known to man so I’m not sure.
I just figured out today im so proud Bro
Great videos dude. Very helpful!
Thank you!
Great detailed video, thank you for the information step by step on the how to remove the turbo.
Thank you!!! Have to tackle my turbo. Not sure when it was last rebuilt, but it's leaking.

Thanks I’ll try this next time
Im at the last pedestal bolt and i cant even get it with the swivel socket set! Do i need the universal joints?

I’m really glad I could help!
i pulled the turbo off the pedestal first, it was much easier to then remove the pedestal
Good stuff. Lots of info. I’ve been working on this all day and struggle so hard with those bolts
What the hell were they thinking?
To make this job alot easier, take the compressor housing, wheel and backing plate completely off. Makes getting to those bolts much easier.
Very helpful, those last 3 mounts kept me stuck all day. Knew I needed the right tool, didnt know what that looked like. Now I do. Thank you!

Hey what size universal sockets to get the pedestal and flange bolts?
Thanks so much for the video. It helped tremendously with my turbo removal. I was really struggling

Good job bud. Im about to endure that to fix a fuel leak and put a new pedestal😬
Good job brother. It is a tuff job. Job well done sir.

Glad you got it out brother ! Looks like that was a huge pain in the arse 😂
