I absolutely love that you gave life back to these men & made them into people as a whole not just victims. They were people, war veterans, brothers and sons. We need more stories put in this way. Victims need their life back , from the life they led and who they were, to unfortunately how their death happened.

I totally agree. All of the channels that do these kinds of mysteries almost always miss out on the opportunity to humanize the victims. Like you said, they deserve the respect and they deserve to "live," again. I suppose this is the effect of a woman's touch.
Also, it may sound morbid, but I know that I'm not the only one who watches these videos late at night in the dark because I enjoy being creeped out. Well, humanizing the victims also has the effect of making the videos scarier, as it becomes easier to relate to the victims when you know their backstory. I know that sounds fucked up, but I'm just being honest.

I have never seen anyone do a story on this. Gary Mathias was my uncle. My mother’s brother. My grandparents always held onto hope he would walk through the door someday. My uncle had a heart of gold and loved his friends very much. It is believed by family that the boys were chased or threatened somehow. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. I have better pictures if you need them. ☺️

My type of schizophrenia isn't the kind she was talking about, but people make assumptions about the diagnosis the moment they hear the word because of how media tend to portray it. The way the narrator put it up in the beginning is new and very much welcome.

very well done; but everyone seems to skip right over the story of the man with the heart attack mentioning other vehicles, voices, the man and woman and possibly a baby being carried in arms, the flashlight shone into his car... the pickup truck... I think there is much more to this, and I think it is NOT about these young men all going off on their own because they were mentally challenged. I feel that other people were involved and that their deaths resulted from some sort of foul play.

the 4th guy in the emergency trailer was especially shocking.
An emergency trailer, with books, furniture, a bed, fully functional propane tank heater, water, canned food, matches, and multiple years' worth of instant meals - and this guy happened to find it, 21 miles from the road, in the middle of nowhere...
but absolutely nothing was touched. Didn't use the heater, didn't make a fire, didn't eat one morsel of food, did not even open the cabinet to get to the food, nor read a single book.
So he finds this sanctuary in the middle of nowhere and starved to death after 12 to 20-something weeks inside of it.
Either it took him 12 to 20-something weeks BEFORE he found it, at which point he decided to immediately rest and DIED there....
or (and this would be especially heartbreaking) decided that since the trailer, books, heater, and food did not belong to him, he would've rather starved than to steal anything from the owner.... I say this because the case stated the boys DID belong to a special school. they were below average intelligence, and had "a childish view of following all the rules", coming home before dark, being in bed by a certain time, etc. etc.
You don't actually think this would've been the scenario, would it? That he would've found it "wrong" to steal food and whatnot so he stayed there for 4 months and didn't touch a single thing to stay alive??

    • @AllCal530

AllCal530 They were slow, yes, but not that retarded to not eat food if it was in front of them. One can was open IIRC, but my guess is that his hands and fingers were so frostbitten that he coudn't feed himself and just waited for the others to go get help. Ended up starving to death. I think either his state was the worst from all of them (was this the one without the jacket?), or he stayed behind in case someone else came to the trailer. All the bodies were found close to the trailer so it looks like they found it together, my guess is they wanted to find help and planned to return for him. The schizophrenic guy changed shoes with him it seems, could of made it farthest before he died, so his remains were not found.

Andrej Púčať That actually makes a lot of sense. If one was in a really bad way they'd tell him to stay inside while they went for help. Do you think it's possible there actually was a girl involved(like the witness said)? Possibly someone they met at the game that got them to go where she wanted and then things went bad somehow. I could see a girl being the only reason the guys would do something abnormal like taking a different road. As far as going into the woods, it just seems like even if their car was actually stuck, they would have stayed in it with the heat on and waited until someone drove by. So to me them leaving their car is the biggest mystery.

Ok, great piece much appreciated, well thought out and research is evident. Thank you. Here’s my 2 cents. Boys stopped for snack, encountered someone(s) while stopped claiming they were in need of help. Got in the car with them. At this point all this person would need to do is take control of one boy- maybe with a knife- to get psychological control of the rest. Forced them to drive to this remote area to meet with someone else. They leave the boys in the dark, in the cold, in an unfamiliar area. Boys decide to walk to get help only there isn’t any help. Cold takes over and muddles their senses and ability to cope. They start making really bad decisions. The one who finds the cabin is in such bad shape that he isn’t able to think thru starting a fire or using the LP tank. Maybe he thinks that someone must be coming back soon. Assuming that someone lives there. Eventually he succumbs as well. Whatever really happened we will probably never know. I feel so bad for these guys, kids really. May they all Rest In Peace. May their families also find peace.

Ironic how the two "psychics" had views that were basically polar opposites from each other. Shows how much value you can place in that type of nonsense, eh?
And why did they claim, after one witness said she spotted them at a store, that they had no money when Ted's wallet was found with money in it? Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of misleading information floating around this case. Such a sad story, though.

I don’t know that I would quite consider this to be a Missing 411 case. Yes, a few unexplained events took place, but the majority of the events have a rational explanation. I will admit that I immediately thought of Missing 411 when the missing shoes were mentioned. Would have been nice to know if they were found on one of the other guys.

I was born and raised within a hour from where this happened and I have never heard of this case. Just doesn’t make sense Why stay in the trailer for so many weeks but not even checking the gas. This trailer was either a hunting spot or a illegal growth area, which it was winter so nothing was being grown. But the gas and the food storage means it somewhere people go to. Why stay so long when during the day lite hours they could have walked out rather easy? Loosing a 100 lbs and the facial growth just doesn’t make sense. Even if they didn’t know the area during the day they could have found their way out why stay at a trailer and starve? Years ago people kept their hunting lodges stocked with everything they would need to survive people used the honor system. If someone got like lost and found a cabin or trailer that usually had the means for a fire and food, you didn’t vandalise you treated someone else property with respect and usually replaced what they used. This system helped many that got lost. Why didn’t they search the trailer better? Why didn’t they all stay at the trailer until day light? Just doesn’t make sense unless the one that is missing was the cause of the deaths of the others?

The trailer was 20 miles from their car. They were all suffering severely from hypothermia. Ted Weihler, the guy who was found in the trailer, had the lightest clothing of them all. Two of the men didn't make it more than 8 miles away from the car. By the time any of them made it to the trailer they were all very ill..... And that's not even asking why the hell they drove out there and left their car.

Well I have yet to finish watching this, and am only at the beginning, I very much wanted to take the time to pause and to Express gratitude and appreciation to the author of this piece, for the incredible lengths they went to articulate the important and significant difference between mental handicap and cognitive deficiency... And mental illness. As well as the remarkable amount of effort they put into illustrating many noteworthy, historically successful figures who suffered with mental illness, particularly schizophrenia, which is not widely known. The amount of effort and compassion displayed here, and the unspoken understanding of the stigma of mental illness and the unfortunate presumption, even still, that mental illnesses somehow equate to mental deficiency, when that isn't true, is a very rare thing indeed. Not many people take the time to illustrate such a point, nor do those who attempt to do so do so as well as seen here. It would be apparent to me, at the risk of being presumptuous, that the author very much understands the ongoing and pervasive stigma that surrounds mental illness to this day, and the importance of dispelling such Common misnomers. Can't emphasize enough how much I appreciate and admire that.

Aww, I work with guys very like the descriptions here (in a place similar to their Gateway). While watching it I was thinking "What would John, Martin, Mark, Ifor, Bryn, Jack do in these circumstances?" Like the families and friends here, it's incomprehensible that they would deviate from the days plan or thoroughly familiar places. They just wouldn't! (Except for Ifor maybe, but the others wouldn't have followed him anywhere as they regard him as 'sometimes irresponsible' and look after him.) They would be concerned with safety, and not leaving somewhere they regard as safe and warm. I'm sure my guys would be found at the car, waiting for someone to find them. How awful for the families to be left with such a mystery. My friends are all harmless, innocent, 'child men' who aren't daring or brave, but very sweet, funny, caring, gentle and loving, they'd each give their last £1 to someone they thought was in need. Very like these men are described. I can't imagine how sorrowful it would be if they came to such an strange and awful end.
Nice work on the narration, especially for including the descriptions by the families which rounded out the personalities. Instead of just educationally retarded or slow. Well done Alexandria Tucker!

What confuses me is the fact that they didn't stay with the car...they at least had heat for the time being because it still had gas in it.

Just noodling here: Sounds like they were acting as though they were suspicious of the driver who had the mild heart attack, perhaps having gotten worked up into general fearfulness over something they had seen and interpreted as a threat. I think the car got abandoned because they got out (for some unknown reason), separated from each other, and couldn't find their way back. Maybe a stranger to them, a hitchhiker perhaps, was involved, too. In any event, I think their actions may have been taken in a state of fear about something, or in a panic at their situation. The possibilities are endless.

Mr. Shone had something to do with this case. He said he went out to check the snow levels for an anticipated trip the next weekend? Gimme a break. That stinks on ice. I believe he was cruising around and ran across these young men and had them follow him thus luring them to their death. There is one thing and one thing only that those young men would have went that far out of the way and taken that much risk for. I believe Mr. Shone used the promise of that one thing to lure these guys. When they got to where the car was found Mr Shone produced a hand gun and when the guys didn't go along with his program, probably discharged it. This is why the guys were scared to come back to the car. All that excitement caused Mr. Shone's heart attack and all those others he claims to have seen while stuck in his car were a hot dish of red herring to remove suspicion. The cops wouldn't have grilled him because of the heart attack. Of course this is all speculation but remember, all this happened during a snow storm. Him and those young men were the only ones out there. And the propane tank? More than once,I have had the regulator to freeze making the fuel useless.

I agree, but for a different reason. I've don't understand why women are suddenly speaking in a way that makes them sound like dolts. Every statement has the inflection going up at the end, which makes it sound like the person is asking a question or is unsure of themselves. It's really noticeable if one compares the speaking styles of women today compared to somebody like Lauren Bacall. Let's imagine Dan Rather reading the national news and speaking in that way. He'd be perceived as simple and fired. And while we're at it, stop with the shrillness and hand gestures. Tone it down. So yes...thanks very much for the professional presentation of this video. It was enjoyed.

Sid Finster it’s called high rising terminal and has become more common in recent years. It’s also known as the “Valley Girl” accent, due to LA Valley teenage girls speaking in the same manner. I dislike high rising terminal and I also dislike vocal fry. Both are completely and utterly irritating.

One thing is for sure..the group made a series of poor decisions. They may have been chased or scared, and simply panicked.

Great video! I do think they make too much of the car being in working order considering the weather conditions. Older cars without modern fuel injection stall out in cold weather, plain old moisture can accumulate in the distributor cap causing the car to stop running until it dries out unless u take a paper towel to it. I've actually had that happen with a newer car.. It literally died at a stop sign, i was stranded over an hour in the forest with no cell reception until an older mechanic stopped and showed me the condensation, wiped it out, and started the car right up. I'd driven for years in plenty of rain/snow without knowing this can happen. I was in higher elevation on Old Stage Road between Colorado springs and Cripple Creek maybe the attitude is a factor..? Cold, high, wet terrain will cause random failure in cars, so they may have believed they were stranded, then deprivation set in to explain the rest. Honestly diatlov is way more bizarre and sinister in my opinion..

The car was said to have been stuck. They didn't understand they could have used their strength to get out of this life threatening situation. But why would the guy not find the food rations in the unlocked cabinet? The propane tank that set unused.

Aww thank you!! This was my first "baby doc" but not my last! This was made years ago with my low quality mic and less high tech editing, we have grown so much as a channel and I'm so lucky we get to spotlight these terrible crimes and situations. Check out my latest "baby doc" "The Doodler! (SF's other serial killer still at large...)

another thought is that maybe the boys got into an altercation with each other and one of them got mad and flashed-out and threw the keys stupidly without thinking the keys were lost in the snow.

That's what I think happened. The schizo guy was ever found. He could've run off after an argument and either stolen the keys or thrown them into the woods.
