I think it’s fitting the comics came out in 84 the year of the rat. And this year is also the year if the rat. Maybe we’ll get a cartoon and live action worth watching this year? Hope so
My favorite version of the TMNT, along with the 1990 movie and the 2003 series. Their purpose here is not to save the world or fight The Shredder 24/7, but to survive in a world where they are alone. These comics (first prints) are really fun to collect and look for. Been doing so for 20 years
I’ll never forget sitting in the theater in 1990 to see the aTMNT movie and having some kid tell me that the TMNT shirt I had on was wrong because they all had red face masks.
I enjoy them but they changed Shredder's uniform color, he's supposed to wear red. I recommend them to new readers because it's much easier to tell what is going on.
I have 1-3. Only read a little of vol 1 so far but man they is grizeat. Wish they would release vol 4 already. Gonna have to get the single colored issues by idw for now I guess
It's funny when people try to argue with me when I tell them in the comics the original Turtles all had red bandanas. I had a book sack with all of them in Red on it and the kids used to tell me my book sack was fake and it was wrong. Keep in mind this was 88 through 89 so the cartoon had them in color by then. But people till this day will argue with me that they always had different colors.
The old comics and Idw's new line are what I enjoy. They really did a great job bringing in elements from all sources and meshing them in a way that works.
I bought my first comic book at the 7 Eleven down the street from my house and it was #4 issue of Eastman and Laird’s TMNT. I absolutely fell in love with that series and it got me into collecting comics as a young kid. Have to admit, after Eastman and Laird did less art and storytelling I stopped reading the books. Now I have to revisit and catch up on what I missed since then. But that didn’t stop me from watching the tv show/ buying all the toys/ and loving the first live action movie! I still have that #4 issue to this day.
Honestly I like this version of the turtles. A lot of future Tmnt would refrence certain scenes from these comics. Example: in the 2003 tmnt episode (Return to new york part 3 I think) and the 2012 tmnt where Leonardo avenges Splinter references issue 21 of the eastman and laird comics where Leonardo beheads (Clone) Shredder. But these are only one of the examples. There are many more out there.
Leo beheads the real shredder at the end of Return to New York, they burn his body at the end, it was the last time shredder was used in their Mirage comic
I believe shredder also got crushed in a dump truck near the end so season 4 2012 which may have been a refrence to casey jones doing it to him in an old movie but he survived it this time
I have a couple boxes of comics from when I was a kid. I found what I think are a few TMNT comics that introduce a character named Savage Dragon, Um guessing 2 series early 90s. I haven't looked through them in a while, but this vid makes me want to pull'em out again. The art always intrigued me, and all turtles have red headbands. When I use to tell kids that the original turtles all wore red they were like "Yeah right", then I show'em! Thanks really like these vids, been getting subcption for over a year. TMNT ALL THE WAY. DON'T forget people " you are here because the outside world rejects you"... love that quote!
Very informative video. Will you ever cover the Archie Comics Turtles? That was the book that got me into monthly comics. I still remember all the weird characters like Cudly the Cowlick, Ninjara and the Mighty Mutanimals
I think this is good timing. With no new comics shipping, I just bought Vol 1 & 2 so I can check them out. I'm sure others would be interested in doing this as well.
There's also the ones based on the first 3 animated series, maybe rise has one but wouldn't know, and a short lived one based on the movie TMNT that tried to tell solo stories about the Turtles being apart.
I know Eastman / Laird stories tend to get the most attention, but Volume 1 had some really good stories when they started bringing in other indie creators. Rick Veitch's "The River" (24-26), "Sons of the Silent Age" (28), Michael Zuleii's Souls trilogy (31,34,36), are a few that cole to mind.
This is a great breakdown. For V2 being collected I wish IDW would release a collected set since Classics Vols. 8-10 trades went OOP. Also Laird needs to release a collected V4.
I love the coloured collections of The Mirage comics! The OG comics are one of my favoutite TMNT incarnations along with the 2003 series and 2012 series. The same can't be said for the Image comics run.

I disagree. The Mirage comics were a hot mess. The only good books from Mirage were the ones actually written by Eastman/Laird aside from a few select stories from Tales. I much prefer the IDW series; it has a cohesive storyline, at least.
The original mirage comics are definitely the best. The new IDW stuff isn’t that good at all. We really need a series or movie trilogy based on the first 20ish issues of mirage comics.

Turtle Soup, Gizmo and the Fugitoid, Usagi Yojimbo etc. These are my most prized and valued possessions. TMNT is the very reason I started collecting comics in the mid 80's. FOREVER TMNT!!!
My friend and I started a podcast where we are covering the ninja turtle comic books. It’s called The Ninja Turtle Nerds and it’s available on most podcast platforms anchor.fm/ninjaturtlenerds
I'm currently collecting TMNT comics. So far I have 3 volumes of an IDW rerelease of the original Mirage Studio run that covers issue 1-21 and a solo comic from each Turtle. I also have Batman/TMNT 1&2 and Batman/TMNT Adventures. I want to finish up the Mirage run and after that start the newer IDW run and get the other Batman comic also the Ghostbusters and Power Rangers crossovers
The story of Vol. 3 is even more confusing than as described in the video. Before the color reprints titled 'Urban Legends' published the issue 24-26 conclusion, the original creators had already returned for a two-issue conclusion, TMNT (Vol. 3) #24-25, that linked the Image comics back into the Mirage universe and also wrapped up the stories of some of the characters from Tales Vol. 2, namely Tang Amaya. This conclusion was 'unofficial' but all the writers and artists got the blessings of everyone involved with the original Volume 3, only IDW wouldn't publish it (which is pretty insulting considering they ended up printing a different conclusion that was far worse in my opinion- for example, the new conclusion that had a full extra issue still left Leatherhead's story on a total cliffhanger, whereas the original 'unofficial' conclusion addressed all the plot threads left hanging and more.) What's worse is that I know NEITHER of the existing Vol. 3 conclusions are close to the original vision, because interviews with Carlson and Fosco from back in the day have them revealing that Lady Shredder was supposed to be Karai. In the unofficial 24-25, the identity of Lady Shredder was changed to Tang Amaya, but in the new Urban Legends 24-26 conclusion it's a completely different thing that I won't spoil that is so much more underwhelming and disappointing. I want to know the role Karai was originally supposed to play.
What happens when the turtles turn 20? Can we still call em teenage? Like that comic that takes place ten years later. Twenty-something mutant ninja turtles!! 20 something, ninja Turtles! .... hero’s in a half shell, turtle power!!!
I hate to ask you to do this but because I assume you have the comics listen I'm visually impaired I've never been able to read these comics because they don't really come on audiobook some of the ones that were printed back in 1989 the teenage mutant Ninja turtles adventures they in fact did have some tapes and I've heard all three of the tapes that exists but I've never been able to follow any of the comic book lines because I can't read them so if you would honestly do a breakdown of like everything I know that would take forever and be a whole lot of videos but I would absolutely love you for it!
An opinion from my heart: I hate when the original comics are referred to as the "old" version. They're the originals, and that places them outside of the conversation about which version is best. They are the source and the bar by which every iteration that followed is judged. Calling Eastman & Laird's original vision "the old version" is an insult to the creators and to the TMNT legacy.
Volume 1 made me not like the the first animated series. Going from a more mature storyline to surfer pizza eating pre-teen look. I was disappointed. I remember Issue #2 had this dope car chase scene the entire issue. The Return to New York & City at War storyline were my favorites and shoulda been made into a live action tv show. I think the last ronin is gonna be Michelangelo writing another story like he did in the issue where he was the last ronin… then at the end, the last pannel shows Mikey at a table, in a Batman t-shirt writing a story about himself as a ronin warrior, by himself. I don’t remember what issue but it was when they go stay on Casey’s farm. That whole farm run was used in the 1st movie too.
@@impendingdoom385 yeah, I have all 3 volumes but my favorite crossover has got to be the Batman / The Maxx: Arkham Dreams. Wish they did more of those. If Grant Morrison did the Batman and TMNT I bet that woulda been dope.
The Last Ronin is the future of the original volumes? So I need to read all the Mirage series to understand it. I'm going with the collections on Amazon. I couldn't find the Image series sold as a collection, but I did find some cool stickers.
Image wouldn't be collected since it was cancelled before completion. However, IDW is currently republishing the Image books in colour with an added three-issue conclusion. I imagine they will release a collection once it's finally complete.
These are the turtles i want to see on the big screen no goofy mike no scientific donny dark gritty takes itself super seriously gory as fuck violent as fuck all red bandanas i would personally love it to pull no punches i want a full nc17 rating as violent as an 80s nc17 movie you know those types you just dont see anymore brutal as fuck bloody as fuck lots of swearing and lots of drinking because they use to drink alot in these comics hell i would even love it to be a character studie like ang lees hulk with elements of the bodycount comics its nice to dream

What about the IDW comics
I have a question about Archie comics. When did it stop being 1987 animated series and become it's own continuity?
@tyrone kinard so from #4?
@tyrone kinard allright, thank you
More comic turtles please
If theres going to be an over the top tmnt series it has to be on adult swim.
If Last Ronin is part of the Mirage canon, why do they have colored bandanas?
Did he… did he just call us casuals
An opinion from my heart: I hate when the original comics are referred to as the "old" version. They're the originals, and that places them outside of the conversation about which version is best. They are the source and the bar by which every iteration that followed is judged. Calling Eastman & Laird's original vision "the old version" is an insult to the creators and to the TMNT legacy.
100%
Love this so fucking cool 😎
"Takes place over a decade after"... so "Twentysomething Mutant Ninja Turtles"?
What about the Archie tmnt
Have you read the Batman vs TMNT? It is a dream come true! There are 3 volumes, all are excellent!
@@impendingdoom385 yeah, I have all 3 volumes but my favorite crossover has got to be the Batman / The Maxx: Arkham Dreams. Wish they did more of those. If Grant Morrison did the Batman and TMNT I bet that woulda been dope.
I used to read and own some of the original ones!
👏🏽🤟🏽🤩.
To throw a wrench in not all of vol.1 is canon
The Last Ronin is the future of the original volumes? So I need to read all the Mirage series to understand it. I'm going with the collections on Amazon. I couldn't find the Image series sold as a collection, but I did find some cool stickers.
Image wouldn't be collected since it was cancelled before completion. However, IDW is currently republishing the Image books in colour with an added three-issue conclusion. I imagine they will release a collection once it's finally complete.
First half of the Image series collection is already out. TMNT Urban Legends. Vol 2 drops in Nov.
I wonder if IDW goes under because of this virus if Last Ronin will still come out. 😔
It’s only on hold for now
@@MirageTMNT80sOG Thank You!
There is a Difference between Cancelled and Hiatus.
Volume 3 not cannon
What about dream wave? Will you cover it in a later segment?
Also too, tmnt adventures?
