- Lots of good memories of Shoestring. This one hit me today by surprise when I realized it was one year ago today that he tagged my bucket! It really is a priceless memory to me!
Hobo Shoestrings life would be an awesome movie!

He has popped into my head many times over this last week. He got me looking for 'hidden riders' whenever I was watching them go by. I always hoped I would spot him as he would ride past. Not going to happen now, only in spirit. ...... sigh................
Thank you for this. Shoe should definitely be allowed to be buried in Iowa. He was King of the Hobos to all of us, even though it wasn't official.
Matt, I've stated on many videos lately that Shoestring should be named honorary King at the next Hobo Convention. There should also be a statue of him erected there. Maybe even go as far as being buried there as well, but of course that's up to his family.

I understand he’s going to be buried in Britt. A gentleman has offered to pay for the plot and funeral. God bless whoever he is!
I’m planning a trip to the convention in 2025. I won’t be able to go this year, because I need hip replacement.

Statue or a stone wall with his face embossed bare minimum. Someone set up another GoFundMe and let's make it so. I'll put my money where my mouth is for this man.. he gave me so much joy in his videos.

Seems like yesterday that he was just here in Ohio. It's still hard to believe what happened to him. He will always be in my heart and I know that he will be in yours as well.
He was 6'1" and weighed 220 pounds.
I know...I'm still in shock, sharing these memories helps I think. Yep that 6'1, 220 sounds about right. I'm STILL surprised he was that big a fellow!

And the height and weight were right because when I was visiting him at the hospital, the nurse came in and wanted to weigh him and just as a joke he looked at me and said "I'm 6'1, how much do you think I weigh?" I guessed him as weighing around 230 so I wasn't too far off LOL

I too hope Shoestring will be immortalized somehow at the Hobo Museum in Britt, Iowa, and maybe even buried there with the other hobos. It would be a fitting way to pay homage to him. Granted, he did say on occasion that his heart was in Alaska, so who knows. At any rate, he's free now to ride that great rail system in the sky. See you on the other side Shoestring, and thanks for all the amazing stories and adventures you left behind.

Matt, That was a pretty good story I would have pegged him for a shorter person as well. People like Shoestring will never leave your thoughts you will carry him for the rest of your life and I think that is a pretty good way to be remembered. I have no doubt in some way or the other he is watching over all his friends you just have to learn to recognize the signs he sends you.
We will miss your adventures Shoestring. You took me places I couldn't go in my wheelchair.

I've been thinking about this Mr Matt I'm thinking CSX as well as Norfolk Southern should honor him and put hobo shoestring Mark Nichols on the side of their engines at least one of them cuz he was the one that actually rode their rails and did more for a promotional thing for them by educating other people but if you can get back to me please let me know what you think sincerely Miss Shane White 😢

Matt, Thanks for sharing. Thinking about him every day and sharing helps with your grief. I never was lucky enough to meet him in person, although he knew he was welcome here any time. He used to message me at weird hours and then he’d get tired of typing and leave a short voice message. I miss him too. He was around the ages of my sons. Stay dry, stay warm and stay safe.

He did for me, gave me a sign. I was at work and I went in for a 1 hour shift trying to help out... I wound up working another 12. I was like... Why am I doing this? And I heard a train twice. The nearest train is 5 miles away from where I work. Then I looked up the message he'd sent me saying about how my job helping delinquent kids is important.

Hi Matt. Do you mind me asking if you know whether or not the coroner announced anything on his cause of death yet? I’ve been in the hospital and home recuperating so I missed any updates. Was just wondering if you may know anything. He was one of a kind wasn’t he?
I haven't heard. I saw his sister post that no drugs or alcohol were found in the preliminary results.

I watched a video King BazzMan put up today. He said that Shoestring 's family is planning to bury him at Britt IA. It was his wish. Have you heard anything? Also, have you heard anything about the memorial service the family said they would do?

Brings happy memories of last year to be sure. I remember him doing that on your video. I actually just watched his last video again (the campfire supper one). He mentions/shows the Omaha spice you gave him. It's a beautiful video seen in a very different perspective this time. Almost has a biblical significance to it given the subject theme. God Bless him..

@@rpdobbler Mark received so many gifts and memorabilia from his fans. A lot of it was very special. I remember that Shoestring figure made from a railroad spike.
@FrigginKlar oh yeah, me too, HE SAID HE LOVED THAT! I think he said that was his favorite gift he got...he loved the artwork people made of him too...
@@rpdobbler He was absolutely chuffed at that song about him from The Mighty Train Wrecks. Mark was surprised by the affection that people expressed for him.
@FrigginKlar I spoke with him extensively about people's fascination with him. He said he really couldn't understand it. I told him my thoughts about it. I'm not sure he ever understood...

I never got to meet him but I sure as heck loved keeping up with his videos and adventures in the short time I got to do that before his passing. Got his hand signed tag still hanging on my wall, and even though I never knew him, every time I see it I miss him being on this Earth with all of us.
Wish I knew the details of how he passed. I know it wasn’t drugs or alcohol but something had to have happened to cause it because he was a tough ol’ dude. No one seems to have any details about it which is weird to me.

I may have some older video games systems for one. I cannot bring them one may have to come about 62 miles or so to pick them up. Paul here is disabled. Slowly I am getting rid of the clutter here. The new x boxes are having cooling problems. Microsoft knows and keeps on selling them. It takes out the video out on the machine. We had to grieve Stobe the Hobo too. An Amtrack passenger train hit him. I still watch stobe the hobo too. Well I got to get busey now. Paul in Ohio I am six feet three inches tall about 200 lbs or so. I just cannot keep a lot of stuff in here. I still have all the stuff for shoestring too. One can have that if he wants it too.

He told me about that experience when he was here....Can't remember what he said about it. Something like it was deeper, colder, & the bottom was muddier than he thought.
He said before he got there three weeks previously ice was covering the lake.I think he was in alaska

@@curtis13450 he was a true hobo. He knew the catch out spots, the hobo jungles, crew change points.
He preferred to ride alone, Each hobo rides the rails and lives the lifestyle to what suits them best. Shoe knew the FTRA but chose not to be part of it. But he was a true hobo contrary to what others say.
Haven't heard much positive about the FTRA myself
