The secret to non-wire ABR-1 back in the olden days, was once you had it setup, a dab of shellac will keep the saddles and screws in place. Shellac is nice, because it easily cleans off with alcohol.
Nice guitar! I had a Gibson Custom Shop 61 reissue with the slim taper profile neck. I had to sell it because life just sometimes sucks. I don’t think I’ll ever be in a position to get one again but if I could, I would get another in a heartbeat.
Sometimes you will find a guitar to sell is better than debt. You'll get another, but remember, you can't save yourself if you don't have a guitar. Good Luck!
Get ultra light. No dings still better feeling lacquer. My ‘23 ml 355 is the best sounding/playing guitar I’ve ever touched, and I’ve played a Lot of guitars. My ml r9 honestly fights for play time now. Still looks new, (*if they do the aging right) lacquer checking doesn’t have any of those long ugly checking lines, just micro-checked like real vintage lacquer. Can’t see it unless it’s against the light. Google a few real 59 ES guitars ull see what I mean. They def won’t all be like that but they do exist. These recent ones really are pretty special. Cheers!
Thanks Trogly. These vids are a true resource for the future. As happy owner of a 87 LPCustom Lite I can tell you: for many slightly obscure models the Trogly vids are the only source for many of the original details.
I might be one of the only 335 enthusiasts who prefers the block in lays. But I just bought a custom 335 myself that felt and sounded beautiful and I had the dots so I had to go with it. I’m glad I absolutely love it.
I always liked the feeling of ''bindingness'' guitars - it's like a better connection of your hand with the neck and sensing an instrument deeper.. those 1958 335s are awesome) and the aging in this particular one is so convincing!)
Salutations Austin! Very nice ‘58 Reissue ES-335, I especially like the lack of binding on the neck and no fret nibs, 15:54 however, I am with you, I would rather have the option of not having it aged by the Murphy Lab at an extra premium price, it would be much better to me to have it just like a brand new guitar and have it age naturally, I tend to take fairly good care of my guitars, and I definitely rather save the extra $1500 dollars for them to leave it alone. It sounds great, as is, but if someone wants different pickups, there are so many options available to suit just about anyone, personally, I might prefer the’57 Classic set, but there might not be much difference in sound quality, however, the newer versions with four (4) conductor wires do offer the option of coil splitting, however that also requires having it custom wired, which is what I would prefer to spend extra expenses on, more bells and whistles, not on premature aging. Thanks for sharing! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸
What a fantastic 335! And yes the pickups should be unpotted. There is an art to controlling the feedback when you play. It gives a sound you can't have with potted pickups. Listen to Mr. 335 himself Larry Carlton doing "Point It Up" live where the 335 sings at pure bliss. A sound you can't forget.
Gorgeous 1958 ES-335 Triburst Reissue with "light" Murphy aging for David! Custombuckers sound awesome too! Bonus: complete centre block and no binding or nibs. Amber switch tip rocks. (Parent's house must be getting full to the rafters by now.)
I've always held the belief that 335's are pretty much the perfect guitar. I've had mine since the early 90's & I love it. They have such a lovely warm tone. Got a 'like' for playing Ziggy too.
Bought one of these recently! Best 335 I've ever played. I've heard the white tips are for shipping and the amber tips are for when the guitar has sold. Who knows!? Team amber all day.
I haven't collected any of these guitars. I have explorers, LP.s, firebird, V's, SG's.specials, melody makers, jrs, So I guess my next purchase maybe 335 or something along those lines. They are definitely beautiful guitars.
Sounds awesome, but I'd prefer the Pup's wax potted. Looks fantastic decent job aging, I'd agree with Troggy that they should sell a unaged new '58 reissue too along with the others as a option.....👍
I don’t understand the whole aging thing and the corresponding pricing. Not saying I don’t like the look of a worn in guitar but I wanna wear it in myself. If I’m gonna spend many thousands of dollars on a brand new guitar it had better get to me looking like a brand new guitar.
Sounds good. I’d probably get a non Murphy Lab Epi tho coz those prices are crazy. Mr Trogly have you thought about using a looper pedal in your sound demos? Col, the Guitarista guy uses one and anyway just a thought Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
Yeah, as Austin said: full on ‘58 baseball bat necks. It’s .95 depth at the first fret like the ‘58 LP Standard. Personally I love the thin ‘60 neck and don’t care for the superchunk neck but it sounds great. I put a set of Custombuckers in my Epi 335 Pro and it went from a giggable instrument to a tone machine. I love it now and it covers so much territory.
I bet you'll coming out with a video that Gibson did a few days ago touring the Gibson Custom Shop, some pretty nice stuff to see there! Hope they'll do a gallery thing where we can see one offs/M2Ms that normally would almost never see the light of day otherwise
I have one of those dreaded 2015 gibsons, a studio, it's so badly made the neck wasn't cut correctly, it was sliced diagonally which mean the tuners don't line up. It's the most vibrating guitar I've played, I've kept it over a 90s standard and a 2010 custom , it just sounds great, it's so badly made that about every month I have to lossen and tighten the truss coz it vibrates in the neck... the guitar is a real pain but it is one that I won't sell.
I can see the Murphy Lab is getting better in aging but, somehow the shine on the lacquer doesn't look quite right yet, could just be that VOS gunk throwing it off or on it or it's still a bit too shiny, kind of missing the 'eggshell' vibe if you know what I mean. But still it looks like a killer guitar, what a beauty!
In my opinion that's a really nice light aged, then heavy aged should be like that with a little lacquer wear in the playing parts. Makes me realise that the heavy aging is not that great
I actually prefer no neck binding IF there's no binding on the headstock. So i love the Studio's, especially with ebony fretboards. And of course I love the customs, with binding everywhere! But binding on the neck but no headstock binding....no thanks. So this 335 is sweet to my eyes!!!
Ya, $6,400/ $8,000 is absolutely bonkers for these guitars. They look and sound amazing, but come on. By the time you pay tax, you’re looking at a cool $9k out the door.
If you’re a collector then it makes sense to get something as close to the original as possible. But as a player, it’s not cost effective and practical. We play what we can afford and like, knowing it’s gonna take a beating over time. There’s room for both worlds.
😂😂 hilarious comment, but sadly so true, $1500 to have some keys and a railroad spike dropped all over it 😂. I’ve got a factory aged R8 from 2014. I will say they have gotten better over the years. I love aged guitars, I hate how much more expensive they can be. I always wanted an R8 and came across the one I’ve got at Dave’s Killer Vintage in Dallas, for basically the same price he had on some non aged custom shop Les Paul’s. So I took the jump. Plus the guitar played like butter and sounded even better. I’ll never sell it. For an R8 it has a monster top rather than the usual plain top. I do have a 2004 335 in tobacco burst. It’s absolutely incredible!! Has some checking now, not much. But has some, the clear coat on the headstock has the most minor yellowing going on…it’s 20 years old this year. Im a Gibson fan boy, I just wish these prices would come down. I’m planning on buying a Theodore USA run soon in natural. Hopefully maybe Jimmy Wallace booth will have some for sell at the Dallas Guitar Show coming up in early May. If so, I’m going to try to snag one that weekend. If not, or they don’t have any, as soon as Sweetwater gets restocked, I’m going to grab one from them. Had Trogly not already done a review on the new USA version, I’d love to NGD one on the channel. Maybe a guitar one day!
Eight Gs for the blonde finish, and we all thought the new Epiphones were expensive 😅 Edit: I personally prefer the 60s style small block inlays on a 335, but dots on a 339. Weird huh.
The amber switch tip is Catalin and is what the 50's Gibson's came with. The white switch tip didn't arrive until mid-1960. The amber (Catalin) switch tip is correct for '58 and is what I would have any '58 RI of mine. The Catalin ones are machined and have no casting lines.
Morning Simon, as a native pole I can say some of the beers brew over there are bad commercial strong and nasty tasting beers. Namyslow pils was not bad back in the past but now quality seems to gone down. I’d recommend doing the same review but from the bottle, maybe it’s going to be bit better. Many thanks Simon.
The first production models of the 1952 Gold Top Les Pauls were gold on the back of the body and the neck. Not just the front of the body and had dot inlays instead of trapezoid inlays on the fret board.
For me...just NO. I'd rather enjoy having a new looking guitar....BUT OH!!!! A different pick guard and strap button. ( don't care) I'd be thrilled for under $2k though.

Visually, I don’t really miss the binding on this one. 🤷♂️
I'll ding up my own for that kind of dough! thanks Trog!

Really sounds great. I too would prefer an unsullied one - not because of up charge, but I prefer a new guitar to look new.
Imagine going to a new car dealer and paying more for one that's all dinged up😮

That neck must feel awesome. My ‘59 ES-335 reissue measures 1” deep at the 12th fret. I really want to try a ‘58 at some point. I like my dots. Lol

I don't understand the hate that tributst gets. Looks good to my old man eyes😂
Mine too!! 😂
David, Congrats Sir, nice 335.
I really love the neck profile of these. 👍
Thank you David!!😊😅
I've always maintained that patina should be earned. Factory aging is just Ick. I WANT a clean version of this. I love it.
I like 335s. Especially this color
She's a beaut, Dave! Thanks for loaning it to Austin for a great review & demo! Love that neck pup!

It sounds amazing, from the very first few notes you played. Also, gotta love a dot neck 335!
The 52 gold top is why I'd like a gold top Tribute with P90's. Pretty close in appearance minus the bridge but I think they look cool.
I used to have one, but with humbuckers and sold it like an idiot. If you ever get one, you’ll love it!
@@Juliosguitarstuffs Yeah I think it's my only option unless they make an R2. Aside from M2M if they'd even make it.

Medium relic job for sure, nothing mild about it. Looks great though.

Are the tooling marks on the edges of the fretboard part of the relic process?
Seen a few gibson hollowbody guitars from this era; definitely looks the part. One of the better aging jobs I've seen from them.
Completely magical sounding! A total dream guitar! You sound even better on this than a Tele Trogly. I’m convinced, someday an ES335!
8:09 - Non-aged. Yes, yes, yes! And neck binding *isn’t* a premium if you don’t like it.

What cleaners do you like to use on your fretboards and your guitars?
Why does Gibson do the matching up of different woods to contribute to one body. The "sandwich": as it's called?
Unpotted pickups. Did you get them to squeal, and if so at what volume and under what conditions?
There's also a Memphis made one from a couple of years ago. Mick of That Pedal Show has one
VOS FOR ME.....BREAK A GUITAR IN BY PLAYING IT.... WEAR AND TEAR OCCURING NATURALLY!!! Excellent 335!!
Wow Trogly your guitar plsying has really improved. Nice guitar! 😊
Hi Trogly, what sort of Amp do you use, do you use the same on every guitar you show us? Do you use any effect paddles? Greetings from germany.

Mr Trogly have you thought about using a looper pedal in your sound demos?

Beautiful guitar. I have a 335 59 RI that I consider to be pretty chunky. Feels like an R8 to me. Are these even bigger?

Damn, Trogly must be a real fan of Top gear, love that intro riff from the show, although idk if the riff comes from other song

That is a particularly beautiful sounding guitar.
I bought one and no regrets. It is definitely different to other 335s
Sounding awesome! Your playing is just getting better and better! Thanks Trogly💯
Sounds awesome
For a 335, that is a beauty. I prefer the 339s personally, but that's just me.
What song is he playing at the begining of demo? Just before Bowie, it sounds famillar.
I can see the Murphy Lab is getting better in aging but, somehow the shine on the lacquer doesn't look quite right yet, could just be that VOS gunk throwing it off or on it or it's still a bit too shiny, kind of missing the 'eggshell' vibe if you know what I mean.

They need to get those truss rod covers rolled baby.
Looks good on you
In my opinion that's a really nice light aged, then heavy aged should be like that with a little lacquer wear in the playing parts.

I played the blonde one at a shop. These are great
Just curious, what did it look like under blacklight?
I do not like aged guitars at all but that guitar sounds damn good ❤
Hi. Have you ever had one?
I actually prefer no neck binding IF there's no binding on the headstock. So i love the Studio's, especially with ebony fretboards. And of course I love the customs, with binding everywhere! But binding on the neck but no headstock binding....no thanks. So this 335 is sweet to my eyes!!!
I'm not experienced in this stuff at all, but it looks well used in the video.
I need to rob a bank or something. My God that thing sounds incredible. Congratulations to whoever got that one.
Honestly, the 335 looks better without the neck binding.
Especially in that Tri Burst Finish.
I would like to know if Murphy Labs is on the USS Philidalphia
Sounds great, not a huge fan of the tri burst.
Good show
I believe all guitars should have the input Jack on the edge instead of the front! IMO!
Very nice!!
I played one recently and did not dig the neck profile. Freaking baseball bat feeling.
That's what he said.
Ahhh, Tom Murphy and his magical "keys" to the kingdom... 😏
Semi- hollow guitar + unpotted pick ups = magic
I feel the same about my flying cloak.
$1500 for Gibson to drop some keys on it.
Ya, $6,400/ $8,000 is absolutely bonkers for these guitars. They look and sound amazing, but come on. By the time you pay tax, you’re looking at a cool $9k out the door.
How in the world do people keep being able to afford Gibson guitars??
If you’re a collector then it makes sense to get something as close to the original as possible. But as a player, it’s not cost effective and practical. We play what we can afford and like, knowing it’s gonna take a beating over time. There’s room for both worlds.

Did you already know that Dickey passed before you made this or was it just a coincidence?
This was recorded a few weeks back. Jessica just popped out on one of the guitars so I used it on a few of the upcoming demos.

I'm one of them weirdos that prefer an unbound neck. That's why I went for the Tribute Les Paul (already have a Studio). This 335 is rad.
The Dave grohl epiphone has a baseball bat neck too.
While they have a full feeling profile - it is NOTHING like a Custom Shop Baseball bat neck
Oooooohhhh ok the strap buttons ARE in the usual locations. 💵

Stop touting the aged garbage. It isn’t that important. It doesn’t make it play or sound any different.
I have a '59 Historic RI ES-335 that I absolutely adore! It's the oldest guitar in my collection. Bought new, from Wildwood, in 2003 😃
I'll stick with my epiphone 335. It's got a 57 classic in the neck, and a vintage superdistortion in the bridge
Face it. You have interest in ALL models.
@19:41 bet it sounds like a 58 reissue, LOL.
I need a 335...i was playing one from the 90s, i think? It's so nice, and i like the fat body i. It fits nice with my right arm. It's no Murphys lab. The price was 1,900. idk if it's worth the price? But it felt so good.
Aged guitars? Hard pass.
Looks way better without binding IMHO
This gives me guitar wood
