Thank you ADA, this worked great. I removed my M.2 SSD from my laptop before live booting into Linux Mint on the 1st USB and this forced the GRUB to be installed on the 2nd USB (External SSD) and worked a treat :D

    Great tool.
Every time I insert a USB drive to the office computer, it is being blocked due to network domain policies.
But now, I am able to copy files to and from USB port-restricted PC's by booting the system through USB.
    Big thanks for the tutorial
    🙂
    🙏

Be careful. Circumventing IT policies like this can get you in trouble. If a certain IT policy is making it hard for you to get your work done and hurting your performance, it's the company's problem, not yours. Because you're getting paid regardless. Just make sure management is aware of the issue and you're putting in the tickets and doing everything you can to follow the proper channels to get the problem resolved so they can't blame you for not doing anything about it. Don't risk your job if it has no effect on you getting paid for your time.

Tip: DON’T ADD SWAP MEMORY WHEN USING A FLASH DRIVE CAUSE IT WILL TAKE TOO LONG TO COPY FILES (atleast for me)

Beware I wanted a Bootable Linux Mint 21 with persistance and my account and created a non EFI or Legacy device, so the instructions, were a little different. After the install I wasn't able to reboot to Linux Mint 20.3 from the system I made the USBs on, I presume it had something do with the the bootable steps. Luckly I had a Timeshift backup just before starting this process. The USB did work which was nice. Just beware somehow I managed to change the host system, which I wasn't expecting.

I tried again, now using a laptop without any hard drive in it.. and the installation did everything correct by installigng the boot/efi on the correct partition (as it was the only one available) but now it only keeps restarting the machine after bios page.. (aftrr 5sec of switch on, the machine resets itself again..)

I tried with Windows 11 and Linux Mint 22.
Before I plugged in the second USB I removed the Live stick just
to check if Windows would start up normally.
Upon reboot Bitlocker then asked for the long key!
Is this supposed to happen also after a session with the second USB?

Why not use the persistence slider in rufus? Would that not be used for maintaining files from old boots?

    • @billielynploof9317
      @billielynploof9317 2 роки тому

The problem with that setting is it’s often limited if you have a 128 GB flash drive I’ve noticed with some versions of Rüfüs it only supports 60 GB of persistent newer versions may have changed. Another reason why this is better than persistence using Rufus is you can change system settings and do more than just storing files it’s easier to install software to a portable USB then it is to install to a persistent live USB.
If you’re looking to just maintain the files then you’re right persistence in Rufus is the way to go but if you want to be able to install software and use it as a full mobile operating system, Using the Lenox installer and installing directly to the US me the full operating system is the way to go.

You did nothing wrong if you can boot into the system. I used SanDisk Extreme PRO. I think they are similar. Did you maybe connect the stick to a USB 2 only port? The stick has for some reason low r/w speed

Following your step with EFI entries and it worked well with USB drive although the bios detects 2 Ubuntu partitions. So I have manually to delete the Ubuntu partition from bios and also make sure to not plug the usb drive has partition otherwise I'd ruined it.

I was having an issue with my Win11 VM & MacOS.
Years ago (I Started Mint 3/4) and even thru the early 2010s, Mint couldn't Install from one USB to Another. Everyone including myself argued and Tried this but it Wouldnt Work.
For a While, UNetBootin in Ubuntu/Mint Would Allow a Persistence File (Radial CheckBox) that WORKED FLAWLESSLY!
Then around the Time of Ubuntu 16.04, UNetBootin Removed it, OR the Option was there, but it never worked Again.
I have an 8Gig (HUGE in 2012) Mint 17 Persistence Drive that I carried Everywhere, Especially when I went back to College Night Classes.

Mind that you can't use this USB on other computers. I think Linux mint installs drivers that make it only compatible with the machine its installed on. Either that or the grub loader doesn't recognize the USB partitions when plugged into new pcs

@AgileDevArt Thank you for the video. The USB works great after these instructions, but will not work on any other computer (other than the one I built it on). I've spent a few hours testing, between three different computers. Testing the usb on any other computer takes me into emergency mode. I think the EFI folders must be specific to the originating computer. Can you confirm or provide some advice? Thank you!

    • @andreashe36

I guess there is now also an entry in EFI Bios, which is only on your PC. I am still strugling with that. Some things were simpler in the time of MBR+BIOS. Also I read somewhere it should find it on other PC if the standard filenames for efi are used. Maybe that is also a reason.

For some reason, the laptop I'm using will not let me install Linux.
I have tried installing to a good hard drive, and an SD Card.
I would have to reinstall to get the error code again.
It basically said my DVD Drive is dirty; (I did not choose that drive. weird.).
    I guess I'm just going to put that older ACER out for sale;
I can't do squat with it.

There are number of problems that could be causing this if you have installed the grub menu onto your PC but not onto your flash drive you will only be able to run this USB on a computer that has the grub menu on boot.
When you get your USB to start up in the computer that it does start up then I have read that people have been using some software that will install the grub menu onto the USB for them I don’t remember the name of that program.
If you can find a way to either install grub on all of your PCs that you’re using it with or if you can find a way to install grub on your flash drive itself that may solve your issue.
Also if you’re using a very old computer I think it’s known as legacy hardware then Linux will automatically install a more legacy version of the operating system so be aware of that the newer systems and the older systems can’t be mixed with this flash drive. If you’re having trouble running it on another PC try using a PC that is made around the same year of the PC that it worked on originally. Because they will restructure your installation based off of the PC that you’re installing it on or from I hope some of this is helpful I am also experiencing troubles getting my base computer to start whenever I try to install to USB and I think it has to do with something about grub
