I just did a specific reply to a post below and realised there were loads of people who can't see the EFI system partition so thought I'd write one that everyone might see. So took me a while, but I had the same problem and it turned out that it was because my machine is 11 years old and it has a bios not a uefi (the modern equivalent of a bios). After much faffing about and reformatting usb hdd and stick using diskpart it turned out all I needed to do was to have a standard windows formatted drive. fat32 worked, but I don't think that matters as the installation process reformats it anyway and then when you get the that part in the zorin installation process just skip the efi system partition part and make one primary partition for the full disk with the option /. This worked for me and I now have a fully functional zorin installation on my usb HDD. Even off my relatively slow USB HDD it's still a lot faster to use than Windows 10. HTH

can i just run without do a setting you give after installation ? i mean, after rebooting, i will go to boot manager (in my pc, i just need to type "Esc" button) and chose the flashdisk that contain the full installed Zorin OS, like when we try to live boot the zorin os installation created by rufus. i want my flashdisk to be a portable os that can run in any pc/laptop righaway after i plug it in.

Many thanks for great video. I have been using an usb persistent Zorin 16 produced with your instructions for over 6 months BUT due to a mistake I needed to reload using Zorin 17 download. Basically followed your video again but when installation completed it didn't give me the option to "Continue Testing". However all seems to work perfectly when I reboot. Perhaps an update would be useful to others? Just as an aside the reason I am using a persistent usb is that I have a Lenovo Ideapad with MMC on board which failed (just after warranty ranout!) and this allows me to make good use of what is otherwise quite a good netbook!
Great video. It's really too bad linux developers simply can't set up installation to include fixing the EFI entries automatically. This is one of several reasons why linux OS will never replace Windows. The average computer user simply does not have the aptitude or interest to want to make the necessary changes. Oh well, I'm going to since have both abilities mentioned.
For ex. I always have ghost boot entries as remains of distro hoping. I know how to get into EFI partition and delete it but for less experienced user it should be done automatically.

It locked my windows partition on my surface pro 6 and I'm stuck on bit locker it says the password is correct but it boots back to it Edit: I fixed It I just had to remove the USB and type the password 2 times

Can't you just install it on the external drive without going to 'something else' and messing with partitions? I don't see the reason for the extra steps when the automatic install should work just select the correct drive to install it to?
It did not work on my side. You would need to fix the EFI partition afterwards. Otherwise the external drive will only boot on the same machine, if it boots at all..

I have never had to use two media sources to install any Linux os. I burn it, run live, then install--all from the same media source. Zorin should be no different.
This is exactly what I'm doing. Burning/flashing on the first USB drive (this is the live drive), then install-all from the live USB drive to the second (this is the full Zorin OS like you would have on a hard disk, but instead it's on a USB drive).
just the lighting, it's not warm like most choose I personally prefer lighter lights or cool colouring but it does make some people look like Casper the ghost lol

nah you just did it wrong, you probably followed the "sdb" name, when you need to enter not "sdb" which is the main drive but your usb's name assigned by linux

Try to enter or copy "install linux to usb" in any search engine and you will get plenty of good written instructions

Try fat32 instead of efi partition. Maybe they updated the installer or your system does not support UEFI

I didn't know it was needed to be unmounted. I thought if unmounted how can it be used

Just instal on drive and make copy with macrium. Works on usb
