I probably learn more from these “fail” videos than the finished tutorials. It encourages me to have patience and try again if I’m not happy with the first, second, third, fourth...go round 😏
Agreed! And it makes me laugh to see professionals start fiddling just as l do, creating more of a mess than you began with - and unhappy accidents such as painting on the wrong paper! I did a whole piece on the wrong size of paper for my frame.
Excellent advice, thank you for sharing Louise. Each failure isn’t really a fail, as you learnt what didn’t work, and corrected that for the next painting.
I so appreciate this tutorial. I think all your studies were good, but as you explained the errors they became more apparent. And your closing comments regarding frustration were stellar advice. You are very talented both as an artist and an instructor. Thank you.
You're a gem! I like this lesson particularly because it is true of all art media. I really tried to keep this in mind when I was learning pottery. What I find interesting is that the more practiced one gets at their craft, the harder it is to remember to let frustrations go and learn from mistakes. It is easy to become impatient with ourselves. I always remind myself that every vessel or piece has something to teach me, especially the failures.
Just a suggestion, a 'tip', Louise... the next time you talk about 3 or 4 different tests, works, present them side by side so that we can better compare them together... Here, it's a little 'frustrating' because you tell us about the problems encountered, but we don't see the tests together anymore, except briefly here and there... It would have been much better for us with an image on screen and these 4 tests together !! Thx for your works and thoughts.
I totally agree. It's almost as frustrating as sorting through extraneous details before you get to the promised "Five things you should NEVER do when...", only to discover it was clickbait . A succinct list, or as in this case, a side-by-side comparison would facilitate the message.
To see so much of the process from Louise's perspective and talent, of works that she deems not quite right and why, and to see how she shifts the process is wonderful. Thank you.
Thanks. I thought I was being too picky when I felt like I need to do a painting two or three times before I get it just right. When I use masking fluid, I always try to leave the pencil mark uncovered, as I find it's difficult to erase after I remove the masking fluid later.
So valuable, Louise. After 5 tries on a painting, all I could think of was the days wasted and I gave up, frustrated, in tears. I tried to tell myself it was a learning opportunity but couldn’t face trying and failing again when I should have used the knowledge I’d gained. Thank you so much! I will give the cockatoo a go. I love the new outfit you’re wearing. So attractive! ♥️
Congrats for your new online art classes. I am going to be cheeky and request a class for painting our iconic bird the Australian magpie. I would love to learn from you how to approach the black and white of their feathers , plus would love to buy a print of a magpie you have created.
Thank you. I rarely succeed with a first attempt at a painting but give up after three failed attempts. This video now gives me hope that persistence will pay however many tries it takes!
I truly loved this one. I’m stuck working on a black rooster, my first bird painting. I watched your video and realized, haha!, the painting I’m doing is a study! lol. Perhaps tomorrow I will do the “final” rooster painting!
Thank you, Louise. This video is so valuable. Its such an important reminder - and lesson - that failure is often in the (many times very frustrating) process of getting to success! Failure is part of learning and - as you yourself mention regularly - even advanced watercolourists are, of course, still learning! The process is also in the entire journey or career of watercolour painting. Even as we continually gain skill there may be seasons of what feel like back tracking or recessions. For anyone who experiences this I hope if watercolour is a passion they never let it go or dull because this is such a magical art form!
Awesome advice. It’s so helpful when you show what went wrong as you were painting- it explained what has happened to me before on paintings. Also thank you so much for that comment about the Fabriano Artistico paper. That was my problem with colors lifting just like they did for you. I thought that the problem was me as a beginner painter. I had finally gotten so frustrated that I quit using the Fabriano and in desperation bought some Arches CP instead. Wow - the issues magically disappeared but I was still not convinced it wasn’t my inexperience that was the issue. Apparently I’m not as bad as I thought! Ha! 😂 You are a wonderful teacher and I learn more with every post. THANK YOU!!!
I have stopped going at every painting like I am going to sell it and am just allowing myself to have fun and learn. I bought an Etchr Perfect Sketchbook, and though there are a few paintings I will cut out, I am using every page, front and back. My biggest struggle with watercolor is overworking…I want to keep my realist style, but get control over this medium to take advantage of it’s luminous, fresh appeal. I am so impatient, but It’s not going to happen overnight. Sometimes I feel like it’s all a science experiment. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos, they really are helpful! PS - must be awesome to live in a place where cockatoos land in your backyard. You can keep all the spiders and other creepy critters of Australia, but I love parrots!
Absolutely beautiful. It's not just me then!! When you are not well or just off form no matter what you do nothing goes right, it is probably best to chill and listen to music because the next day you can usually find yourself again. Personally, I think you were being very hard on yourself but you obviously know what you can achieve.
Hi Louise, l love your tutorials you explain them so well, as a beginner l find this much easier to help me with my watercolours, what l really want to do is learn to paint loosely, l love the softness of the paints, have you any toutorals on UA-cam to help me archive this application , look forward every week to learning something new.thank you Lynne . Ireland.
Love how real and honest you are Louise. It would be easy to simply show all your successes and bury your so-called 'failures', but as you highlight, this is where the learning takes place and it's this very process that leads to success. Thank you!!
Funny how what you perceive as a failure, most think its perfect. Judging ourselves to harshly. All of your paintings are amazing and I love your dress. I havent painted this one yet
Thank you ❤ I needed to see this. I tend to give up when things does'nt work out. I have'nt painted for the longest time. I need to get started again, and I feel ready now after seeing this. You are a great teacher and inspiration 😺🦋💖🌈 Ann from Norway
OMG! what patience! I salute you. each study itself would have taken so much time and effort....still tried so many times. amazing passion ! its inspiring
🎊Congratulations 🎈 on opening up your own online classes & school Louise!! That’s fantastic news! Okay I thought that they were all 😊 great, but I have only been painting for about five years now. After watching your explanation on what you felt was wrong with your study piece I kind of understood why you felt that they were not your best. In the third study I actually saw & agreed that the paint was lifting as well. Something that has been happening in my paintings recently but I felt like it was blending correctly but after it dries it wasn’t for me. So I am glad you shared this video of information with us. Thanks for sharing these valuable details & tips. 💕 Hope you are enjoying a wonderful day & weekend ahead!
Such valuable information I’ve been buying books, watching tutorials etc, I get so frustrated when these things happen when I’m trying to paint. I thought I just don’t have it.. I now know we may never have it… first time, I will not magically be perfect someday.. I will ALWAYS make mistakes I learnt more from this video than any other source of information… When I get time to start painting again, I will definitely be purchasing classes, I can’t wait to learn, Thanks Louise for inspiration🥰
Your third "failed" painting looked like you could add bright spots of colour to resemble stars as the yellow face marking looked like the sun or bright galaxy. Not sure if that makes any sense at all but I thought it was quite inspiring :D
Oh I need an apron. Yay! Thank you Louise as always. I’ve been on hiatus due to having a puppy. She takes so much time. After painting the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, I just had to have one
I use Schmincke now because the paints are easier and cheaper to buy in Australia and they are really lovely paints to work with. Oh, and the granulation is beautiful.
This video is great. Failures are not really failures to me, I consider them stepping stones as I learn from them. What a great opportunity to learn. Thank u so much for sharing this. Encouraging video to learn from.
Thank you for this video. I've only recently begun my watercolor journey and had been enjoying trying different papers. I've been able to work with most, discovering their various quirks and attributes. But a recent attempt on Bockingford frustrated me to no end: the paint lifted if I even so much as waved my brush over it! Yes, I was trying to layer, but I thought I was doing something wrong. I was intrigued to see that your 3rd attempt was doing to you the same thing the Bockingford did to me. For some odd reason, your frustration with it was comforting to me, confirming what I suspected: various papers can have decidedly different responses to paint. Thank you for the encouragement to learn from these attempts and thank you for your generosity in sharing your skills here on UA-cam.
Thank you so much for your words of wisdom and encouragement. It’s just what I needed to hear today. I’ve painted 3 of my best pieces over the last couple of weeks and today I started a new piece and was unhappy and frustrated with the result. I have to accept that magic doesn’t happen everyday, and every failed attempt is a valuable lesson learned. Thanks again, for reminding me ❤
I am so grateful for your transparency on this topic. I have lost so much time giving up. Do you have any video tutorials on how to do watercolor studies or is this just something you’ve learned to do over your career? Thanks, Louise. I’m forever a fan. 😊
Thank you for sharing your valuable experiences. I have always been struggling when painting new subjects. Ending up practicing over 3 times is my normal 😅. Sometimes i felt so discouraging. But every time i watch your videos, i can take a deep breath and pick up my brushes with strength again ❤ thank you so much 🙏
I notice you favor delicate washes and granulating mixes; it seems to be your style. Have you thought to try staining pigments in a thicker first application to go very dark without having to layer? Or would this not be something you prefer in your style? Beautiful bird as always.
Thank you so much, Louise, for sharing your successes and your "failures"! We're so often focused solely on the outcome, that we forget the importance of the journey. Your work is beautiful, and your perseverance has clearly paid off! ❤
Thank you so very much for sharing your 4 attempts and your perseverance to see it come together! Such a great lesson for me to learn! It's so easy to give up. Your painting is beautiful!
Excellent! I’m so ready to paint something in watercolor! I have been taking acrylic/oil painting classes this month and I like it but not as much as watercolor!!! lol! Someday I will mix all three medias!!!! The ultimate!
Loved this vid! So inspirational! I have been here and done this! One attempt took six tries however I persevered and learnt that quality paper is essential and so is water to pigment ratio. Thank you Louise for reminding me to persist and not doubt myself in the process. That even the Pros have their moments! 5 stars 🌟 ⭐️🌟⭐️🌟
What is that great big brush you are using to put down water and for the yellow. I have been looking for something like that for years and not found anything. It's not on your list of supplies.
Hi Louise, I just watched your last video about questions asked, brilliant! I struggle with the wetting canvas thing, I still have a question relating to that, after wetting the canvas I guess you let it dry out completely before taping it down and sketching onto it? If so, how long could you leave a stretched canvas for before painting on it? Could you stretch a bunch and store them ?
Hi Micky, I let it dry overnight. I do a few at a time so that they are ready for me when I want to paint. You can leave them on the board as long as you need to. They need to stay attached to the board when you are painting on them.
Louise, I feel like you’re talking to me! I’ve made so much progress, learning from you, but I sure do feel like I backslide at times. I thought I’d attempt that King Charles spaniel puppy, and once I got to the head, I immediately ran into problems. I ended up lifting some areas, letting them dry, and then trying again. Some areas look overworked because of this. BUT, I decided to keep going because I thought I could learn from my mistakes. Surprisingly, it’s ending up (so far) looking better than I expected. It’s not a master piece by any stretch, but I figured some things out that worked for me. I can see where I need more practice. I had a lot of trouble getting in the small hairs that combine with the brown and white ares of the face. I can draw that line, and work on flicking my brown into the white area. In some cases, I think I used too small or too large a brush. This is definitely a painting I’d like to try again. These are the things that make you such a good instructor. Thank you, as always!
The third mistake was painting on Fabriano Artistico. I used cold press. It's a beautiful paper to paint on but colours lift really easily on it....so it wasn't a good choice for the dark subject that I was painting.
I have a question about aquarell technique:if i mix wet blue in wet red paint and obtain purple, then if i draw wet blue on DRIED red i obtain purple too,but i think this time it appears somehow different (same for anything wet-on-dry)?Is it so,or am i just imagining?I know that layering the colours (wet-on-dry)is a different technique in aq.then blending them,so maybe it is an effect of its own, even though the mixing colours are the same?
Even if I can understand that You doing mistakes I still didn't think it is about the same mistakes, crazy I guess. Trying to correct imidiate thought You know it's not a good idea. This makes me feeling a bit better about my paintings. SO, not that I want You to do Your marvelous paintings on Your 1st try, it feels good to see that it's not that big issue, we're all doing them - no matter what or whom.
I’m painting a dog portrait now for the 5th time and have learned what not to do. I’ve painted many portraits but am having a mental block on this…one more try and I’m over it😂😂😂😂
You have wild Cockatoos in England? WOW! I would be absolutely TERRIFIED to begin a painting like you did this one--wash wet paint all over the place. Maybe someday I'll have the nerve. Not yet!
They all look perfect. Theres no failure here, I dont see any. Wish I could deem my "masterpieces" as so good
Thank you. ❤️
I needed to see this. Im a beginner . Thank you. Love your lessons and how you present them…..you inspire me.😊😊
Excellent advice, thank you for sharing Louise. Each failure isn’t really a fail, as you learnt what didn’t work, and corrected that for the next painting.

Thank you Louise! I get frustrated very easily, but next time my painting fails, I will try to remember your words 🥰
You're a gem! I like this lesson particularly because it is true of all art media. I really tried to keep this in mind when I was learning pottery. What was the final paper you used? And this was very inspirational, so thank you!
Hi Louise, for the third study you say your mistake was using cold press paper but did you mean hot press?
The third mistake was painting on Fabriano Artistico. I used cold press. It's a beautiful paper to paint on but colours lift really easily on it....so it wasn't a good choice for the dark subject that I was painting.
Such beautiful paintings ❤🖼 I'm so amazed. What paints do you use? :)❤
Hi. Have a look here at the paints and other supplies I use. www.louisedemasi.com/paints
You mention that the paper you used on 3rd attempt was lifting off too easy... Do you have a video on different papers and there pro vs cons?
I wrote a blog post about paper. www.louisedemasi.com/tips/2023/4/22/what-is-the-best-watercolour-paper-to-use
Wow!!
I’ve painted many portraits but am having a mental block on this…one more try and I’m over it😂😂😂😂
Love it!
Thank you!
You have wild Cockatoos in England? WOW! I would be absolutely TERRIFIED to begin a painting like you did this one--wash wet paint all over the place. Maybe someday I'll have the nerve. Not yet!
I don't know about England but we do in Australia. 😉 You should give it a go. You never know until you try.
What paper did you use for your final painting - thanks
It was Arches cold press.
❤
Not a fan of masking fluid: expensive, not always reliable, and gets lumpy fast = more expense buying a new jar.
Your opinion of your art is very subjective as you go through the process. I find that if I enjoy the process then I usually like the piece also.
Love your Art so much ,inspiring
Thank you so much 😀
