But I wanted to make my own so it's as fast and convenient to use as possible.

      Thanks! I'm actually planning on doing a video (or several) about marketing next! But if I sum it up quickly, I had the most success with contacting youtubers and asking them to play my game. This was few weeks before I released the game. As for social media, I mostly posted gifs on Twitter and started that ~2 months into development when I had just put up a Steam page. I made an occasional post on Reddit and Imgur, but not so much. After release when I got on the new & trending tab on Steam, I made a post about it on Imgur in my excitement. That post ended up going viral and getting over 100k impressions there. That felt quite surreal :)

    Auro, you have been doing wonderful work. Congratulations. Keep coming up with new videos about your experiences. I used to be an old school coder. I just got my hands dirty with Unity, and it seems to increase productivity. I am curious about one point. What is the scale of Mortal Glory? Say, in terms of thousands of lines of code.

    • @AuroDev
      @AuroDev  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! :) I haven't actually checked the lines of code before. I tried the automatic code metrics feature now in Visual Studio but it only gave me an error. If I estimate it roughly myself, I think it might be somewhere around 30k lines. But I'm sure I have done many things very inefficiently + there is a lot of old code there too that is not in use anymore.

    Hey Auro,
    you have mentioned a company foundation for tax optimization.
    That's very interesting, because most always talk only about sales, but almost never about the costs or taxes.
    You also mentioned that you left your revenue from Mortal Glory in your company(?) account to reinvest. Another wrote something about dividends.
    Now I'm very curious how you're going to do it.
    Maybe that topic would be good for a next video?
    Thanks again for sharing your insights!

    • @AuroDev
      @AuroDev  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Tobias! You have a very good point - planning your taxation is important and will save you money when you are running a business. But the problem is that the taxation laws are different in each country + there are many factors that can affect what is the best choice for each situation. So if I made a video about it, it would only be helpful for a very small portion of my audience. In my case it was smarter to leave the money in my company as I was also receiving paychecks from my normal 9-to-5 job. Since Finland has progressive income tax for individuals, I would have had to pay a lot more in taxes if I also received income from my own company.

    Thank you for sharing a real numbers, I have a question what is your opinion on creating steam page as soon as possible to "snowball" audience. Everybody says it's important to do it early, but I think really early it could look unpolished and many things may change, but if you do it too late you won't be able to build channel people into your community through steam. In which stage did you create steam page and would you do it near the release (like 3 - 6 months) or as soon as you have vertical slice (6 or more months before release let's say). Well good luck with company and another projects.

    • @AuroDev
      @AuroDev  3 роки тому +2

      That's a good question! I 100% agree that you should create your steam page asap. It doesn't matter that it won't fully reflect what your game will end up looking like. I believe I made my steam page around 2 months into development. By then I had some of the basic graphics in place but a lot of the features weren't still implemented. So what I did was that I "faked" the screenshots and trailer by manually placing objects and texts in Unity to give an idea what the end product would be. It looked very unpolished, but I also put "Work in progress" text in the screenshots in the hopes that people would understand that it's not the final look. If you want to get an idea what my game looked like back then, here's my old trailer that I created at the same time as I made the steam page: ua-cam.com/video/xsigVaMBhmg/v-deo.html
      By creating the steam page asap, you can start generating wishlists early on, which will increase your chances of having a successful release. So the earlier the better is what I would advice.

      I haven't had to pay anything to Unity yet. They have a free tier that you can stay on as long as your revenue is under $100k from the last 12 months. Even though my game has sold quite well, my company's revenue is still well below that threshold (due to Steam's cut & other stuff).

    One thing I'm curious about is while developing your game how was your social life? Did you feel pressure to work on your game and learn all the time or were you still able to enjoy other aspects of life? I apologize if its kind of a personal question. I ask because I'm wanting to get into game development but also wondering if there is a way to balance everything.

      @AuroDev  3 роки тому

      Thanks! And hey, no problem, that's a very good and relevant question. I had to balance time between work, my game, my wife and still find some time for relaxing. It definitely was stressful at times and I put pressure on myself to keep putting hours into the game, even if I didn't feel like it at all times. Luckily, a lot of the process was fun and more like a hobby. My wife was also very understanding! I'm sure there's a way to balance everything, but if I'm honest, I still have lots to improve in that regard.

That sum I would have needed to pay from my company's bank account so that's after Steam's cut. Paying for Unity wouldn't be a big issue though. At this point in time, the next highest tier costs $400 per year so in the worst case scenario it would be just 0.4% of the revenue.

    • @AuroDev
      @AuroDev  3 роки тому

      Different publishers can offer different things. Usually the main reasons to get a publisher are to get a paycheck up-front to fund the development and to get help with marketing. On top of this they can also help with various things like porting, testing, game feedback etc.
      But as you said, 30% is a big cut (the cut also varies though) and getting a publisher doesn't guarantee the game will be any more successful than if you published it yourself. I don't think getting a publisher is necessary a bad deal, but I would say that generally new indies are better off self-publishing than getting some relatively unknown publisher (big publishers probably won't be interested in your first game after all).
