    Toast Time:
Inter-dimensional time-blob beasties have sailed the cosmos in pursuit of spare time, and now on an idyllic Monday morning, they've found it, tasted it...
Assume the role of TERRY (Toast-Ejecting Recoil & Reload System) - a humble and solitary toaster with an uncontrollable love for English breakfasts, hats and scheduling - and 'lay the table' for your unexpected guests.
Launch toast, crumpets and magnitudes of other breakfast paraphernalia at the beasties. Bounce around and crush them with your hot metallic mass. Tip over bins, and use the environments to your advantage. Drink a little coffee and go a little crazy. Do everything it takes to defend toast time - you are Monday morning's final hope. Have your toast and eat it.

Thank you all for watching and supporting!
Few things I missed out that are worth mentioning (and there will likely still be more):
    * Lesson learned: Build localisation into your game from the beginning! Don't do what I did.
    * Finding success before quitting your job: Not a one-size-fits-all approach for everybody. If you're able, build a vertical slice then find a publisher. Better to risk someone else's money than your own. :)

With regards to localization, did you pay anyone to localize your game? Been getting contacted by a lot of translators a lot, they seem really pricy. (More for me considering my game has 35k words).

    • @forceofhabit
      @forceofhabit  3 роки тому +1

@@mipzy9168 Yep, I paid for this. between $0.06 - $0.09 per word I believe. It can definitely get expensive if you have a narrative/text-heavy game. Toast Time content is luckily only around 2000 words.

Very interesting, thank you for sharing your numbers and your journey! I was not expecting that Switch data, really sorry to hear that. But you're right - we keep doing it because we love it.

i actually kind of expected that super low switch stats..
nintendo is very stupid about their shop system.. i mean.. as a parent you setup your main account, and then.. your kids with their accounts cant buy anything and is also the wrong target audience.. kids dont notice about stores content and so we parents also wont.. this results in nobody cares about what the store has to offer instead of the main games anyway from nintendo. unlike on my kids android phones where i always get messages to accept buy wishes from android store.. because they can browse it and ask for it remotely..
on nintendo.. they just cant browse, not ask, so not recognized..

Really interesting video, similar to what we did for DSY on iOS and Steam, which ALSO came out around the time of threes. Thanks for sharing this info, and the video production was really good and clear.

I totally agree! I'm still working full-time as a web dev too, which makes making time for this stuff quite difficult, but as they say, "slow and steady wins the race". :)

@@forceofhabit I know the numbers were very different when the Switch was just out :) but it became saturated very quickly! so it's a great extra revenue stream, but most of us won't make big money with just a single release ;)

Hey! Awesome video and congratulations on your success :)
I have some questions that I would love if you’d answer:
    - Did you use paid advertising to get your game out there?
    - Now a days, what would you do for mobile: just premium version or free w/ ads version (and premium)?

    • @forceofhabit
      @forceofhabit  Рік тому +2

Back in 2013/14, premium only was a lot more viable. We made two great trailers, and did a lot of reaching out to press (eg TouchArcade, PocketGamer) and UA-camrs covering mobile games - nailing that pitch was an important first impression. We didn’t do any paid advertising, but showed the game at regional games events that were free, and we’d built up our Twitter with regular updates on progress. Did a timed free demo build for EGX. These days, everything is harder, but the principles are the same. Premium can work if your game suits PC and console too. Use every opportunity you can. Personally, I’d go with freemium with pay to remove ads, and design around lots of in-game unlocks which can be unlocked with ad views also. Hope that helps!

How did you market the game for Android? and is it hard to get sales on play Store than steam?
please let me know as I am working on a game for Android and confuses if I should make it free or premium Thanks :)

Thanks for sharing. I honestly thought it would have done better on Switch
I dont think it's fair to compare a minimum wage salary to working on the game. My reasoning: If you were working in games doing the same work you'd get paid more than 6-8 GBP. Without benefits. It sets a bad example that people only factor in the hrly rate vs holiday pay and 401k/Super etc
I run a game studio so maybe biased but I want people to compare apples to apples and you have the skills to get a much higher paid job so that should be the fair comparison (or at least another value to compare)
Keen to know what the plan is now? New game, new job?

      It’s premium, no ads.
Another game of mine - makenines - was ad-based and made less overall than this.

Sounds like a good route to go mate! A lot of indies are really bad at marketing. If you can nail that down you’re golden! Well, assuming you would have the budget! 🤣
I’m just lucky to have web development as my main money maker. 🙂

and the worst is.. this was also back almost 10 years.. imagine today.. you gets lost in even way more competition.. he got featured on android and apple accross multiple countries.. if releasing today.. you will never ever get featured or marketed by them again.. unless you already has a recognizable name or another high selling game which took apples interest.. so its even way more harder today then back then.

now game changed i remember in 2014 i was make daily between 700 to 1100 euro from free game (admob)
and the game was just reskin
was easy to make money now is defferant you need to run ads

Kinda sad you did such less money ;( But the price tag was also quite tooo low.. 0.99£? Just bought it on steam to support you ;) Sorry, that i wont play it, not my kind of game ;))
Anyway.. most common issue with actually not earning enough money with games is the direction of the game itself..
Most uf us, including me.. wants probably make a game you would enjoy itself and it's very likely that this is just not a strong selling genre.. I mean.. everyone starts out with platformers.. nobody cares about platformers ;) If it's really about money, we have to do research first, what kind of genres actually gets buyers accross different studios.
FPS as an example.. nobody buys fps from small indies.. there is only 3-4 major brands that controls the entire market... so creating an fps is a waste of time and you will most likely not even earn 1000$ in a year.
platformer, vr games, racing games.. you wont earn anything.. metroidvania.. hard market..
simulation, rpg, more complex games.. now we are talking.. but those needs a lot of time and needs to be complex, but these are the kind of games, that sells accross the board..
but thats the problem.. if you need to make a game for money and you actually dont like these kind of games? whats the point ;))
i for myself.. i'm concepting a game, that is not strong selling, but i am passionate about it, so i don't expect to earn what i invest, but i think i create tutorials while developing, maybe making a course out of it and aim to sell and get the money back with the course incomings, instead of the game sells.. issue is.. marketing is expensive and you need to cross-sell your work as good as possible - not just the final product itself.

Make a vertical slice, impress a publisher, land a deal, spend (ie risk) someone else’s money. That’s my top advice.
