Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Now, before the Olympics were a thing, it was really just a bunch of Greek competitions about testing physical limits. They had no fancy ass equipment or Nike sponsorships. But since then, a lot of people have been abused, and cities have been destroyed. And apparently, people like you and I pay for the Olympics to exist!? Are they even uniting and inspiring us? And with such a hefty price tag, are they even worth it?
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

My Granddaughter got me into watching you. I’m 59 years old and I have learned way more about Dark History from you than I ever did in school ❤💯
My own daughter got me into Bailey MMMSeries 5 years ago- been hooked since then!!
I absolutely love this!!! My Nana would’ve loveeed Bailey💕
I got my grandma to watch too. She’s 72 and she LOVES Bailey
Absolute truth! Jm also 59, and I've been watching Bailey for a long time. Awesome that she started this show because it's way more informative than history taught in schools! ❤
I as well! I am 58 and my daughter got me hooked on Bailey 😊
Not so much a question, just want to brag on my littlest brother: He’s officially a Junior Olympian! He’d love a shoutout on Dark History. Or at least I would lol. He’s Autistic and it’s a huge strength in his swim, because it’s what they call a special interest aka an obsession with something specific. I’m just so proud of him 🥹
Congratulations to your brother! That's a huge accomplishment. I can tell you're very proud of him 🥰
99999999996666666
🎉 Congratulations!! 🎉❤😊
Congratz to him, well done!
That’s amazing. Congratulations to him!
Never thought I'd see the day learners are actually excited to be the first to attend a history class.😂😂😂
Bailey needs her own country😂 like serious I'd live there
Id say pick me I got no shame.
It's the best thing ever
I liked American history in high school.
Learners tend to love learning.
Hey Bailey! Something really big happened in Mexico on Oct. 2, 1968, 10 days before the opening of the Summer Olympics in Mexico City, police officers and military troops shot into a crowd of unarmed students that were protesting against repression and violence. Of course, the President wanted to maintain social order during the big event, so he opted for literally wipe them away. It's know as the Tlatelolco Massacre, where it's believed more than 300 students died, although the President reported only 20. The Olympics were held normally as if nothing had happened.
When they bombed us (Eric Rudolph not ‘they’ lol-) but when that happened other than making sure they checked to clears the stadiums & parking lots I’m pretty sure they didn’t gaf ab the BOMB that went off they just had to OLYMPIC. smh it’s so sad
So very sad.
Tata Bailey j'aime beaucoup faire des coloriages et jouée avec mes poupées 😊
Holy cow!
So glad people are making an effort to keep this info better known
I’m glad Simone prioritized her health over the games. ❤
Simone being happy and healthy and ALIVE is worth EVERYTHING. I, for one, would father have a whole Simone Byles than a Simone who was maimed, disabled, and/or killed due to entitled @ssholes and bull$hit public pressure.
Did anyone notice how when she was talking about the horse-drawn chariots...she said "nay-nay"...so fitting 😂❤ Love you Bailey!
RIGHT! I giggled.
When you mentioned durex's condoms, all I could think was trojans missed their opportunity in what is the quintessential greek games. I know there's a joke I'm missing in there
🏰🐎
Ahhhhhhahaha!
Magnum condoms and Trojan should have teamed up with an extra large Trojan Horse brand.
I am French and this year the Olympics will be held in Paris. So far we have been Warned that many metro lines will be canceled, transportation tickets have gone up for everybody, already struggling students have been asked to leave their student housing for the athletes and of course you have heared about the bed bug problem… it’s gonna be interesting 😂
Will they be testing for 3 substances banned by the French; soap, deodorant and toothpaste?
@@djquinn11😂 is this why the French are smelly??? Stoppppp
insane
😮😮😮😮
"We gotta keep the men busy. They need something to do" 😂
I read this comment right as she said it. So perfect.
😊@@solene2014
Im a man and I totally agree! 😂
My great uncle won gold in archery Canada ‘76!! They exist😅😅
My neighbor for the first 28 years of my life and life long friend was a gymnasts for her whole life. She was finally ready to try out for the 2008 Olympics. She was so excited and had trained her entire life for this but 4 WEEKS before the tryouts she had to have her ACL replaced. She still went on to try out for the Olympics and still came in eighth place, even with an ACL replacement. They only took the top six to the Olympics, meaning that she was the eighth best gymnast in America at the time. She was so devastated. Thankfully she has recovered and lives a wonderful life now with her husband and 2 kids and has become a very successful personal trainer. She also worked for cirque du soleil many years as a gymnast.
“Do you know a famous archer?” (46:50)
That is the only sport in which I recall a famous *person* who tried to qualify for the Olympic team (vs. becoming famous as an athlete): Geena Davis (“Thelma and Louise”, “A League of Their Own”, “Beetlejuice”). She took a break from acting for a couple of years to focus on making the 2000 Olympic team. Placed in the 20s at the Olympic trials. Pub trivia fact.
That’s so cool! I had no idea
❤❤❤
Interesting!
Thank you!!! I was in my car screaming GEENA!!! GEENA!!!
I RAN to the comments just to scream Geena's name!! 😂
Ah, my raven Edgar is asking for permission to DM Joan. He's a writer, kinda dark, and is into pole dancers. 🎉😂
He may refer to Joan as Annabelle Lee... It's specific to her... So she shouldn't look too much into it lol
Sounds hot!😂
@@tristinminner4716You so get"em😂🎉
@@LayLay120911It is!!!😂
I don't think Joan wants to be tamed by a man, she's a free bird lol
Who else appreciates Joan Crowfords Flo Jo nails 💅
You should do an episode on the dark history of treatment of neurodiverse people. Autistic people, for example were sorted out during the holocaust and given the label Aspergers (after the sick, demented scientist) if they were deemed “of worth”, or they would be killed along with the other “undesirables”. Now we are subjected to torment even modern day through things like ABA “therapy”.
I swear your neuro spicy community would LOVE a dark history on our treatment both past and present.
Love you and all your content, and love the way you present things. I’ve learned so much from your DH series. ❤️
My husband went to Winter Olympics 2006 in Torino, Italy, he was a figure skater, pairs.
What he told me about the time, money and efforts he spent, I can tell you it is insane.
Respect to all athlets out there, it is a huge success even to participate.
I’m shocked you didn’t touch on the Atlanta Olympic bombing. Fun fact my dad was in the first EMT vehicle on site for the bombing. Second fun fact you’re inspiring me to get my degree in history I was to be a professor who teaches like you! ❤
We need a "Part 2: Olympic Controversies"!
@@sandrasathome Yes. Another one to add, the whole thing with Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. Not to mention the fact that everyone was thinking Nancy would win the gold and yet no one saw this little girl from the Ukraine, Oksana Baiul, take that gold. Instead, Nancy got the silver. I think Tonya was in 9th place, something like that.
Hi Bailey! I was born and raised in the cute little town of Jim Thorpe, PA. It’s nestled in a mountain valley in northeast PA. Very historic, check out the history of the Molly Maguires, it’s a bit ~*~dark~*~.
Unfortunately, no McDonald’s in town… you’ll have to drive 10-15 minutes to the next town over for one. Certainly worth visiting, regardless. I’ve since moved away but I still visit my family who still lives there pretty often. There’s a lot to do and see there!
My ex's dad was an extra in the movie The Molly Maguires, which was filmed in nearby, historic, Eckley Village.
I adore Jim Thorpe, it's a beautiful town with so much history. Been there many times, I particularly love the train, the historic jail tour, the Asa and Harry Packer mansions, so much cool stuff! The Harry Potter-esque coffee shop is great, and the metaphysical shop has been there for ages! I went as a kid, and I'm amazed that it's still in operation. Jim Thorpe is one of my favorite places in Pennsylvania.
We're from Bear Creek, not far from Jim Thorpe!
I’m from saylorsburg! Love Jim Thorpe.
I’m from Palmerton, my son and I enjoy bike rides on the D&L trail to Jim Thorpe for ice cream and sight seeing.
My Dad was an archer for the US Army and was considered for the Olympics. He has passed now, but my mom has shown me news articles on him. I think it's pretty cool and wish he would have taught me how to shoot.
You didn’t even mention the incredibly hot Atlanta Olympics that trashed Atlanta and got 💣 💣
Not to mention the whole team that was unalived. I totally expected them in the Dark Histoy.
Yeah we need a disasters at the Olympics episode. A part 2 if you will.
Oh yeah! And that guy who found the bomb and then got blamed for the putting it there.
i think i speak for many but bailey has become my comfort person. she's so bubbly, funny, and genuine. everything this world needs :)
The biography of Jim Thorpe I read in elementary school failed to mention that THEY TOOK HIS MEDALS AWAY.
Shouldn’t be surprised, but it’s infuriating to learn that X years after the fact.
Greek person here! Thank you for covering the olympics with honesty and humor, i really enjoyed this episode, just like every other tbh!!
I cant help but notice Bailey be really getting creative with them ads. I can't skip'em 👏😆
Last fall at the airport, I met an ice dancer who was training to be in the Olympics and competes in all sorts of competitions. It was fascinating. It definitely made the wait for our red eye flight easier. Just by him asking to borrow my phone charger, I learned so much. I learned how much he trains, all about skates, the rules of ice skate dancing, etc. I hope he makes the team one day.
I love getting my dosage of Bailey every week 😩 such an icon
Geena Davis, the actress, was an olympic archer.
She went to tryouts and didn’t made the cut.
Yeah, how cool. I love Geena Davis.
$15.4 BILLION!?!?😮 nobody knows how to waste money like the government!!! We can't pave roads, lower rent or house people but we can DEFINITELY pull an obscene amount of money out of thin air for GAMES! ...k.
Actress Geena Davis (from "League of their Own" & "Thelma & Louise") tried out for the US Olympic Archery team for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She just missed qualifying for the team, but did earn a wild card berth in the 1999 Sydney International Golden Arrow Competition.
I never knew this. That’s pretty cool
Simone is literally the best gymnast in the history of the world. She's insanely talented. To the point that they had to cut her score because they didn't want other athletes to attempt her dangerous moves.
I'm not trying to say that she's not a real person with real emotions, but it's weird to think that the best gymnast IN THE ENTIRE WORLD gets anxiety and freaks out like we do
@@stabbed.pineapple3717not weird at all. We're all humans with human challenges.
@@natalieholmes5313 Let's not forget she spearheaded and effectively became the public face of all of the girls and women American athletes who spoke out and spoke up about suffering decades of abuse from that viper and child predator, Larry Nasser. They were testifying in criminal TRIALS. That ALONE could've been too much pressure for anybody to attempt competing at the elite level, much less someone who has their own record and the hopes of over 300M countrymen behind them. I'm fiercely proud of her for loving herself and knowing her own abilities enough to say "No way".
Let's not forget Gabby Douglas the FIRST black women to win a gold medal, not saying Simone isn't the best but she's still has a way to come
@pettyiana4071 the 1st black woman to win a gold metal was Alice Coachman😊
My great-grandfather went to the Carlisle Indian School and played football with Jim Thorpe. I’ve seen a bunch of old photos of them. Please do a story on the Trail of Tears, I saw someone else suggest it also.
Baily did an episode on the Trail of Tears in her first season of dark history ❤
A suggestion for a dark history episode: the dark history of the "Black Rock" company. It's suffice to say they invest in some malicious stuff. Plus, as far as I know, they are the owners of Monsanto AND Dupont...and more.
Amd google amd UA-cam and governments. Oh wait, then she may not have a channel anymore on these platforms and could possibly get Assanged. Scrap that thought
Also Vanguard.....but I agree with the above reply, she may no longer have a channel if she covers them 😅
Nascar, Bailey! That's modern-day chariot racing and has the benefit of no horses being hurt.
@Bailey - Last night, I was filling in at a different property than where I usually work, and mentioned you in a conversation with another employee. He thought your name sounded familiar, and when I "sang" your Monday theme song, he knew I was talking about you. He said his girlfriend listens to you regularly, and he doesn't care about the makeup, but he likes to listen to your true crime podcasts. He also enjoys your Dark History podcasts.
Just wanted to let you know, because I appreciate all the research you do and that you're putting it all out there.
Canadian here, my neighbor growing up was a three time gold medal bob sled Olympian. He trained most of the year in Calgary but his family lived in Ontario, so they only saw him on his off-season time. His wife had to work because even though his training fees were paid by sponsors, he only got that small amount to take care of his family from the government. You would think that all expenses would be covered, but they weren't. His family was fed and had a roof over their heads and didn't have to worry if they would have a Christmas, but they weren't rolling in the money like you would think.
This is so true. I'm from ON and moved to Calgary a few years ago. My husband played for the CFL and he was going to train at the Olympic (Winsport) training facility here in Calgary and they wanted like 3-4k a month to train there which he learned that Olympic athletes actually did have to pay for it. He met a few and none of them were rolling in it. Which also, side note, CFL players also are not rolling in it lol.
The history of the Olympics has always fascinated me so thanks Bailey for diving in to this. Joan looks great with her medal too.
My daughter has a gold medal in Jujitsu. A lot of people don't know that you literally have to try out for this state Olympics as you would say. Myself being from Oklahoma she had to try out for the sooner Olympics. So there's always a catch to something. And she was only a 18 at the time and it cost her dad and I a lot of money. Also being an Oklahoma and I am indigenous Jim Thorpe actually paved away. I'm anxious to see what's going to happen in 2024
Joan Crow-Ford RULES!!!!! So glad Joan and Paul are helping with the sponsor blurbs.....
What's better than breaking the Fast with a dark history episode. Thank You BAILEY
@zephyrine1448. Same!
Couldn’t wait for this one after watching The Laundries episode. You’re a national treasure, Bailey!! You won’t let us be sheep any longer!🙌🏼🖖🏼👑
I watched the movie and read the book you recommended.
"We gotta keep the men busy"
Cackling 🤣
Bailey, The dark history of Viking's.! It's WILD!
There's an Audible original , "VIKINGS ! Scandinavians Who Shape The World" by Scott McCormick. Its great!
When you mentioned pigeons it reminded me. There's an amazing story in there about one of the Viking Queens using homing birds to defeat an entire village or City. 😅 .
In 1984 LA hosted the Olympics..my father owned a garage that sold propane . They came to my dad’s shop and got propane for the torches. My dad and got to take a picture with the torch. Highest point in my life 😆
Bailey helps me get through my chores as a SAHM & stay sane ! Love you bailey, Joan & Paul! ❤️❤️
I do the same thing! 😂
I want the story and conspiracy against crows and ravens. The fear and story's about how they tie into death
"I wonder if she ever made it..." 100% accurate jennifer coolidge impression right there Bailey!
Not famous but I know an archer. My brother was an archer for the Colombia team and trained for almost 10 years and sadly did not make it to the Olympics. But he did win gold and silver medals in other international competitions and we’re so proud of him! And yes… very expensive and a full time job just to train 🫠
Dark history of the Olympics needs a part 2. There is so much more that wasn't covered in this video. For example someone mentioned when Atlanta hosted th Olympics & explosives went off. I remember watching that.
I'm legitimately excited about the pigeon episode next week. I've heard enough about it to be angry for them, but can't wait to hear more about it.
You are the reason I took the plunge and started my very own channel ❤️
I watched you everyday at work..
Love love love
My brother worked for the Dept of Diplomatic Security, and he was head of security for the Gold Medal winning women's fencing team when the Olympics were held in China. They invited him to their Gold Medal big fancy party, not as security, but as their guest, as they had gotten to know and love him. AWWWWWW...... pretty cool!!!! (He had fenced in college and his daughter fenced, so he actually requested that assignment. And low and behold..... WE WON!!!)
I was in France last summer and literally the whole city of Paris was under construction in preparation for the Olympics, they are even constructing new train lines to help get the athletes to events. Please do a DH on Napoleon Bonaparte!
Talking about the extremes people will go to to win...Tonya Harding should be at the top of that list imo, what crazy woman! Can't remember if it was for a general comp or the Olympics, but fm, a medal cant be that important!
Bailey, this was a great Dark History episode! Watching this made me think about how covering the dark history of FIFA could be interesting. It involves a lot of corruption and there is also a lot of sketchiness behind the most recent 2022 World Cup, which involved inhumane conditions and deaths of the people working to build the infrastructure to host the event.
Famous Archer. Did Actress, Geena Davis do archery in the Olympics?
Geena Davis on How She Almost Made the 2000 Olympics
Her 24th place finish fell just short of qualifying her for the Olympic team, but she did score a wild card berth at the Sydney International Golden Arrow competition in 1999. Today, Davis reveals that she still picks up the bow and arrow regularly, “but just for fun.
I used to want to go to the Olympics for Tae Kwon Do, so I was thrilled when I qualified to try out for for the Junior Olympics in 2001 (I was 12). I decided not to try out because I decided the competition life wasn't for me, but I do wonder how different my life would have been if I had gone that route.
Bailey,

Wow. That's a way to do it....I guess
That is so sad.
Baily, I have been with you since you had under 100k and I want you to know that the way you tell stories is amazing.
Hi Bailey! Do the dark history of Wonder Woman and her creator, who also invented the lie detector machine. It’s so interesting!
The 2002 Winter Olympics were held in Utah. I was in second grade and we got to go to see the parade and the torch runners. It was really cool! I am excited to see that Utah may host again some day, but my mom is not. She said when there were so many people here, everyone was getting sick with something, and it lasted for a while even after they were all gone.
It's really cool tho that my kids get to skate & take lessons at the same ice rink where Olympians competed. Park City is also pretty fun to visit. And we even get to see athletes practicing sometimes. 😁
😂😂” if you squint, it makes sense” 😂😂
Jim Thorpe, PA is a beautiful little town. We were just passing through, and I'm glad we stopped. Definitely worth a little day trip for hiking, the Harry Potter themed coffee shop, and some artisan shops.
That’s awesome. I want to check it out
Bailey you have to do a follow up!!
Jim Thorpe PA acquired Jim’s body under not so honorable circumstances AND his family has been fighting for decades to get them to release his body back to them but the town fights them in court and WINS 😮
I live up in Bradford county PA
I was reading through the comments just to see if anyone would mention that specifically. So many people who live around Jim Thorpe think he was from there because why else would the town be named after him? It's such a shock when you learn the truth!
Love you Bailey 💜💜💜 dark history on puppy mills 😢
Pigeons are adorable. They were socialized with us for years and deserve better. I can't wait!
My brother used to live right across from Canada's Olympic Park (C.O.P.) in Calgary, but not when the Olympics was on, lol. It's the same place where Cool Runnings took place, though, which has to be one of my favorite Olympic stories.
I walked where John Candy walked.
lol I shuttered at the thought of the LA traffic during the Olympics. 😩
I love you Bailey you make my every other Monday and all my Thursdays worth getting out of bed!

I’ve been waiting for this since last week! I love Greek history and I love the Olympics so was super pumped to hear Bailey spill

We live about 2 hours away from Jim Thrope, PA. We usually go for the Fall Foliage Festival in early October for the train ride and the cute shops in the little town. I don't recall seeing a McDonald in town but love the atmosphere there.
It made it worse. People started moving here in droves... And now the valley is so full and the air is always smoggy... I hate it. Now you can't hike within an hour of the city without the trails being pretty busy. You struggle to find parking... I hate it... Did I already say that? Lol
Bailey I've been watching you for over 10 years and you never fail to do a great job at doing a podcast/ documentary. Thank you for educating us! 👏🏼 👏🏼 😊

I live in Fairfield, Iowa. We have no armed archer who has been to the Olympics twice. He won the silver medal in Tokyo. His father in law brought it in to work and I held it. That thing was pretty heavy and much larger in person than what you’d think.
love this weeks episode, and an answer to one of your questions, his heart does still remain there and the first torchbearer has to pay a silent tribute to him. cant wait to see whats next week

It always makes my day a little better when you post! ❤
I went to High School with Tasha and Jordan Schwikert. Jordan was in my creative writing class, and Tasha was in the 2000 Sydney Olympics for Gymnastics. What they endured at such a young age all in the name of the Olympics is heart breaking.
