_______
Never in history has there been a more unappreciated animal than the pigeon. Most people think they are just disease infected rats with wings. Right? But actually, pigeons were our companions for centuries. All they wanted to do was help us send our silly little messages and stop wars, and what did they get in return? A whole lot of injustice, that's for sure.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

Well, what did we learn friends?
Absolutely adore you Bailey!!!❤❤❤ I love that you mentioned Mike Tyson for this episode and his story with his pet pigeon also 🥹❤️🙏
Love the Champ and our beautiful sweet Bailey forever!!
That my cat named Pigeon is named after heroes, lol.
I learned we need to put some respect on pigeon’s name!
so you're telling me Mike Tyson has 2 tigers and pet pigeons.. what a man
I love pigeons moreso now 😊
A few years ago an injured pigeon came onto our property. We took it to the vet and he helped us to nurse it back to health. The pigeon was a pet and when I contacted the owner (details were on a ring attached to his leg) he told me that once the pigeon was better, it would fly back home.
This was in Australia and there were hundreds of kilometres between us. So I was skeptical. But after about 3 weeks we released it, and about a week after we released it, his owner messaged to let us know it was home.
Meanwhile, I’d be lost (literally) without my GPS.
Thanks for this one Bailey. It was fun.
Let me be the first to reply and say that is such a heartwarming story! Thank you for taking the little dude* in for a sec, it’s like he knew you guys would help
Same thing happened to my friend! Thank you for helping the little friend!
That is so amazing! 🤗
❤❤❤
This is one of the best stories ever ❤️
As an owner of a pigeon- this makes my heart happy you are raising awareness about these birds. My Petunia is the sweetest bird I have ever owned.
petunia 🥺🩷
Yes, she is so sweet- I love her. She thinks my husband is her mate though so it’s pretty funny
She deserves all the yummy treats
I can’t wait to have some of my own 🥹 Petunia is such a cute name.
does petunia have an instagram by any chance???
I love pigeons so much!! I'm from New York and I was bullied a lot as a kid, so I felt a sort of kinship with the pigeons. One time in the 6th grade I ran out of school in the middle of a class, to save a pigeon i could see from out the window, who was stuck on a glue trap. Was I bullied more after that? Yes. Do I care? Nah, and I'd do it again. Pigeons got our backs, and I wish more people would start having their backs too. Favorite dinosaur, hands down. 🕊
❤
I agree, best lil dino 👏
Before I watch this. My ex husband races pigeons here in the UK. Pigeons really did help us in the world wars in fact certain pigeons earned medals for their efforts. Too many people calling them flying rats....without them certain intelligence wouldn't of made it back here to the UK. They are far more intelligent than what people think. Much love from 🇬🇧
My dad has been racing pigeons since I was a kid, they’re lovely birds. I had one that grew up with me,he still flies onto my shoulder whenever he sees me now!!
@@elles1454 certain hens would pair up to Paul lol thankfully in Chester they have a designated bird feeding area. I'm always shooing the seagulls away 🤣 but you're right they are lovely birds coo x
@@hannahmorris5468find it bizarre that I’m watching Bailey Sarian a few miles away from you!
from the UK too and had no idea this was a thing?!😂
We need a Dark History on Nikola Tessla - he was a Fascinating character, the definition of mad genius!
Agree! 💯

I’m honestly surprised she hasn’t already!!
I’m going to forever call pigeons rock doves.
Rock on! 🐦
Same!
Feral pigeons are rock doves... 😂
Yes.❤
I got emotional when Cheri Ami's story was told. I was like, No! Please tell me that he survived."
Bailey, I would love to see a video on the dark history of dog breeding! Anyone else?
yes!!!
That’d be very cool!! Great idea!!!
That’s a really disgusting rabbit hole but it does need to be further exposed.
Ugh-being a vet tech I would love/hate a video on this! 🫤😆
I would that be very interesting?I love dogs l o l
Girl, only you can make talking about pigeons this interesting 😂💖
It really was interesting! 🤣 Thank you for watching!
Right 😂
Pigeons are actually pretty cool@@BaileySarian
@@BaileySarian just about wet myself when you described how Tesla made “low pigeon noises” 🤣🤣🤣
Pigeons are SO underrated! They are smart, sweet, clean, and can be soooooo affectionate! As long as you don't have lung issues, pidgies and doves make great pets!
I'm so glad Tyson was mentioned. If you have ever seen the Adult Swim show Mike Tyson Mysteries, this was the reason he had a pigeon as a character, voiced by the late great Norm McDonald. Such a funny show, watch if you can. Thank you, Bailey, for another amazing Dark History.
I totally forgot about that show 😂
Cher Ami's story was so touching considering, that in French, cher ami, means dear friend!
My Grandad used to breed pigeons (and budgies later in his life).
He was on active duty in WW1 (yes I’m old 🤣) and that’s where his fascination for the birds came from.
Loved this episode, it was like a trip down memory lane for me 💜
I literally said to a friend last week how cool it would be if you did an episode on JFK. I can't wait!
My Saint Bernard, Maggy - we call her Smaggles most of the time, is seeeriously intrigued by pigeons, particularly the noises they make. Welllll, Miss Smaggles went bonkers the entire episode, constantly searching for the pigeons every time she heard a cooing sound. It was slightly hilarious and extremely adorable. That is all 😘
I own three pigeons as pets, they live with me inside the house. Pigeons are just so underrated ❤️
I have two brothers. They're so funny and smart.
I have one too ❤😊
Bailey do a dark history of nursing!!! PLEASEEEEEEE PLEASE PLEASE. I’m about to finish nursing school and I would love to hear where it started, they only teach us how great Florence nightingale is and that’s it
How’d you finish a school and learn nothing about its history?
Oooh me too!
Isn't your job scary enough
@@justintime6242 reread what I put up there dawg. 👆
@@melaniemurphy8531 meh not really
Loved this episode!! The guy across the street from my mum seems like an HOA type but I've noticed him feeding the pigeons lately which is adorable. Seems so out of character but I love it. Pigeons are taken care of and we get to hear the cute cooing.
The pigeons I feed look like they've been to the gym lol
Hahaha! Hilarious.
😂😂😂
When I told people pigeons aren’t native to the US and shouldn’t be on the streets ~ especially in New York ~ that human brought them here from across the seas, I’m looked at crazy. Like people believe pigeons aren’t real more than when I say they’re technically an invasive species.
Truly is a tragedy for the most hated bird which is undeserved. Especially since we used them to our advantage and when we had no purpose for them anymore we tossed them aside to fend for themselves.
I gotta say as an Assyrian, I am loving the ancient Mesopotamian mentions in these dark history episodes. Assyrians, Babylonians, Sumerians, and other ancient Akkadian speaking do not get the respect, hype, acknowledgment or public awareness we deserve. Especially as the first and oldest civilization with a rich history, inventions, and culture, you would think people would be more fascinated with the mystical beliefs of Pagan Mesopotamians.
Pretty interesting story. I believe that the passenger pigeon was originally from Persia. 200 years ago the passenger pigeon population in the US was estimated at 3 billion. 100 years ago they were declared extinct.
they literally died in war to save humans because of their abilities and "worked" for humans for centuries just to be thrown away once they werent needed anymore, then hated and killed by the humans they were bred to trust. Ill never get over this
@@liamandil6871 Pigeons need to be honored for their work in the war the same way other animals are. I’ve literally seen dog, cats, a bear, a donkey, and horses get honorary medals and statues for their service.
~RESPECTFORPIGEONS~
The Mayna birds have a similar history and are also considered "nuisance" birds who get a bad reputation and are poisoned and killed (especially in Australia) by humans (they also sadly are known for bullying and 'scalping' doves) they are super intelligent mimics and were trained as working birds too.
I live in Palm Springs, California, and a few months ago, I came home to find the most colorful beautiful well fed pigeon ive ever seen sitting on the railing outside my front door. He let me walk by while taking pictures. He also had tags on both legs. I looked up homing pigeons and voila. He was a homing pigeon who was taking a rest on my porch.
In many "Hoods" in America, Pigeon messenger is still happening. I had a guy neighbor in Los Angeles who trained & flew pigeons, it was amazing how he had them trained. He had two sticks, he'd clap them together and they would return.
Here in jersey, seagulls are generally referred to as "rats with wings". We tendd to call pigeons "ghetto chickens".
What do you call people who live in jersey? I can think of a few appropriate names but none are suitable for UA-cam.
same here in indiana
@@Lauriej117my family. And some of the most amazing people you could ever meet. 😉
Same here, we call seagulls the rats of the sky or rats with wings. I live in Ireland.
I actually love pigeons. There's a mourning dove on my windowsill with two little hatchlings right outside my window. We have a ton of massive pigeons downtown, and some of them have really cool looking feathers. Like there's a dalmatian spotty looking one in our plaza? Idk what that's all about, but they're very neat. Bold, too. You can get pretty close and I'm always sorely tempted to just pick one up like a football and go "we're friends now" but I don't want to stress them out. I would 100% be a crazy bird lady if I had the space. Crows and such are cool too, I want to befriend them. And I just traveled last year and saw cardinals and blue jays for the first time, it was wild. Maybe this is what becoming an adult is like, bird watching just sneaks up on ya. lol.
Hey Bailey Girl I'm glad you did an episode on my favorite bird the common pigeon. When I was a little kid, about a century ago, I'm 78, I had an aviary. My aviary consisted of 5 or 6 pigeons, four parakeets, a java sparrow, a baby night hawk, and some other animals on the side. Skip to decades later when I used to visit relatives in the Philippines. Whenever I'm there I eat fried pigeons! Very tasty like alligator meat during Carnival. Bailey Girl you brought back old memories. Thanks!
Gross!
that took a turn
@@kjulie2372I know right? I wasn’t ready 😳
Thank you Bailey. As a native NY'er I have not been a respector of the pigeon. I have a whole new outlook on pigeons thanks to this episode. Definitely looking forward to the Kennedy episode
Pigeons are the cutest! How can you not love our city bird?
I LOVE pigeons. My husband’s grandma raised them and when there got to be too many she loaded them up in the back of her covered truck and drove them 1.5 hours away and released them. By the time she got home they were all there waiting for her.
I really did change my mind about pigeons with this. Especially Cher Ami's heroics.
Side 📝: Who ever edits these and mixes it with Bailey's sense of humour, I appreciate you.
You didn't change my mind about pigeons... because I already loved them! So glad you gave them their time in the spotlight. Also, loving how you are now mixing in the next weeks topic with the current weeks content. Been cool watching you and the channel grow! 👏🏻
I've always been fascinated by pigeons.
Pigeons and squirrels.
My grandfather used to race pigeons. He would raise them then race them against other pigeons 😂 I’m not sure why, but he did :) lol
I understand that pigeons always return to their homes, but I’m wondering how the courier pigeons would know where to deliver their messages.
This is all I've been wondering 🤔
YES! It's driving me crazy! All I keep saying is "But how do they know where to GO?!"
The soldiers would carry them in cages with them to where they were going and then attach the message then the bird would fly back to headquarters they perceived as their home.
That’s my question too!!
They were raised in the head quarter and then given to the soldiers to take with them. Abd as soon as they would release them they would fly back to the headquarters
When studying abroad in Europe, I taught the immigrant groups I was meeting with that pigeons will barter. They know how much worth there is to say... sitting on your knee for a chunk of food as opposed to pecking crumbs from the ground. One of my best memories; absolutely love pigeons, thanks for this episode!
I did not know that! Pretty cool.
As a Chicagoan who has spent a lot of time seeing and sometimes dodging pigeons, I loved this episode and the whole idea for doing it. It's always bugged me that we could demonize a whole type of bird. So human of us!
Bailey, I might be a little biased lol ... but I would LOVE to see you do an episode on the dark history of the trucking industry. We depend on truckers (female fuel hauler here!😉) for literally EVERYthing we buy and consume. Yet a) the industry is incredibly corrupt and abusive to most truckers and b) the average consumer/ car driver treats us as if we are nothing more than an inconvenience (in fairness, many truckers are completely unprofessional on the roads). I'm on a mission to help more people understand this complex subject and it would be amazing if you covered it!!
You are amazing, thank you for all you do!!
Thanks from a Canadian. Our truckers stood up for us when we were being oppressed.
I wear a purple poppy on Remmeberance Sunday UK for all the animals who helped us in the wars to present day. Horses, pigeons, dogs, rats etc have also been very brave and I have much respect for them.
She promised and she has delivered.

Awe thank you! Glad you're tuning in 💜💜💜
Bailey you had me spitting soda out when you said "The fertile crescent sounds like a place to get pregnant!"
Oooh yes loving this episode, reminds me of how I first pronounced pigeons as pig-e-ons as a child and honestly still do at 28!😂
Im still confused on why its spelled that way
@bea2323 the English language for you😅
I would LOVE to hear the dark history of tattooing!
I'm a tattoo artist that has only been in the industry for a couple years. But I've heard some interesting history from it.
i think she already did that one!
“Lieutenant Dan, you ain’t got no legs“ 🤣🤣😭😭 the way I just cackled was unnecessary , but baby that got me. I love you Bailey ❤️
The Kennedy family should be a great show! I'm looking forward to it! As for pigeons, I love them! I hand fed and 2 fantail pigeons, and they were actually very sweet and smart. I think they thought I was their momma. I would raise more if I could 😊
Move over Joan there’s a new bird in town! 😂 🐦⬛
I just watched your previous Dark History video in which you told us that we will learn about pigeons next and yay now is next and I’m ready to learn about pigeons 💃🏻

I didn’t expect there to actually be a pigeon video. I’m so excited for this? 😂

I'm beyond excited for this! I just moved to a new apartment and we have TONS of pigeons that live there as well. Maybe we'll learn a thing or two about how to have them carry notes?! That would be so cool
This is exactly what I needed today 🕊
Whenever I think about pigeons, I think of Bert from Sesame St lol
My cat is watching this with me and every time there was pigeon coo audio she'd look around for one 😭😂
her pigeon impression has me rolling 😂
Love it when Bailey presents Dark History subjects that I would never, ever think about!! Thanks, Beautiful!!
PS ~ look for "squab" recipes....
I live next door to a church and there’s always a pigeon couple hanging around. I used to be annoyed by them, but they literally never bother anyone. One year a Mama even built her nest outside my enclosed porch.
I love them! I have 2 pairs nesting in my garden every year. One pair of rock and one pair of love. They are so used to us not hurting them that we can go very close to their nests without them freaking out. We will never look in their nests when they are nesting but it's a cool outdoors pet to have.
The unsung heroes
Bailey should do the dark history of horse racing
That’s a really dark subject. I love horses and it makes me sick what they do to those animals.
@@djquinn11 I also love them and have several. I have never, nor will ever go to a race. It turns my stomach what happens to the thoroughbreds and quarter horses
This was very interesting. Thanks for sharing!!
