  • This is part 2 of 2 showing an overview of the full project. You should watch this video before you reach this portion of the lab. This project was specially created to give sheet metal students practice with a variety of skills as well as to meet the FAA requirements for SIU's Aviation Technologies program. Any resemblance to real aircraft, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

    "People who make damage to their airplane dont want to be reminded of that damage later" 🤣 Thanks for the wonderful video. I've only been working with aluminum at a hobbiest level - this taught me so much and gave me lots more to research.

      Thanks. I'm getting ready for my SIUC tenure review, and if you/your class/your teacher would be willing to write me a letter with what you just said, I would help me be sure I get to keep my job!

    Question...in the SRM, there's the "typical web repair." 1, what's a web, and 2, what defines typical?? Thanks in advance.

    would countersinking work better for this repair instead of using a dimple die?

    Can you please make a video explaining the correct measurements for the same one inch hole. DME's in my are asking this a lot. A 1.75 distance between the outer rivets. A total of eight rivets around and they all have to be exact. Thank you for making this video.

      I think the one he covered was letter (k) 1” inch patch plate the distance suppose to be 2x from the edge of the patch but no more then 3x for rivet spacing am I right ?

    How did you make the small one inch patch. I assume by getting it close on band saw then filing to a circlular line? PleaSE HELP. THANKS

    i just have one question sir? Is it okay to use a squeezer with universal die sets when attaching the filler piece to your doubler?

    Sometimes the rivets ar placed in a staggered pattern.
    Could yu kindly explain the advantages of the staggered riveting over the chain riveting?

    What is the advantage of dimpeling over countersinking for the flush rivets?

    • @1donagin
      @1donagin  4 роки тому +3

      Countersinking is much quicker and easier - particularly for the guy driving the rivet. You dimple if the sheet is too thin for a countersink to fit (the countersink cuts out of the other side of the sheet).

    Does grain direction not matter in a flush patch? Does the grain direction have to be in same direction as original structure?

    • @1donagin
      @1donagin  4 роки тому

      Grain direction typically is not considered important on sheet metal parts unless bending at near the minimum bend radius, where bending across the grain is preferable. I usually pay attention to it in my projects because when left uncovered, it can be visually jarring if the grain runs different directions. I also try to use rivets from the same batch, because some have slightly different coloration...

    In an actual aircraft what no. of rivet should be used? Ty

    • @1donagin
      @1donagin  4 роки тому +1

      Depends on the aircraft, the thickness of the material, the type of material, and the location. Most small aircraft use AD rivets, approximately three times the thickness of the thickest sheet. Your aircraft manual should spacify.

    Can you show how you determined the spacing of the rivets for both 1" and 2" circular patch ?

    • @1donagin
      @1donagin  5 років тому

      Hi. The 2 inch circular patch rivets are determined by the repair manual. See AC-43.13-1B (downloadable for free), or the Cessna Structural Repair manual. Both specify the spacing. The 1" inner patch is simply a scab to make everything flush, and so the spacing is not critical.

      @@1donagin Thank you and how would you determine the edge distance or calculate for the 1" and 2" patch?

    • @1donagin
      @1donagin  5 років тому

      You will see that the manual tells you what diameter circle to put the rivets on. It also tells you the hole diameter and the doubler diameter. Do the math, and the edge distance will come out correctly. If my memory is right, AC 43.13-1B calls for a 2.5 inch doubler on a 1 inch hole, with the rivets on a 1.75 inch circle.
