  • Pikmin 4 has been taking over my life for the past couple days, and I have to share my thoughts on it. There's so much to enjoy with this new game, and it's super exciting to have new Pikmin content to talk about and discuss. I had a blast playing through this game, and I'm so glad this series is back in the spotlight. What can I say, it's peak man.

So turns out time doesn't actually come to a total stop in the caves, instead it's 1/6 of the normal speed. But time does stop if you're at the end of the day. My bad for getting that bit wrong

it moves at 1/6th the speed, but pauses at the ten second countdown. also dandori caves DO seem to pause the timer since ive spent plenty of time trying to platinum some challenges by restarting over and over, and time didnt seem to move.

so yesterday i full 100% the entire game and i have to say the difficulty spikes around half way and trying to do the final dandori challenges were difficult but fun as always the olimar side story was a blast a much faster pace then the first game and all the lovely characters you get to meet and talk to are amazing to id say this is the favorite out of the series though i do miss the alone feeling of 1 just a bit.

Although I love the quests, they all feel quite the same. Most of them you don't have to backtrack to do. Imagine instead of "kill 500 enemies" it was "kill 5 bosses" or "kill 100 bulborbs in caves". A bit specific but I would love the quests more for that!

It´s so surreal that we literally waited 10 yrs and 8 days for the sequel. It might be my favourite Pikmin. (And I just completed 100% on it).
It´s probably a bit too much text for me. Sadly, I never got a connection with the rescue team members because they basically chill at the base camp all day long and don´t go with you on the adventure (unlike Charlie, Brittany and Alph did).

As someone who's played a ton of Pikmin I enjoy near every moment of this game and the difficulty spikes of getting the white and purple Pikmin. The lock on works most the time but I definitely agree it is cumbersome at times. I dislike the auto stop when throwing Pikmin on something especially when it's close to night and the game is preventing me from throwing more Pikmin to make them move the object faster.

  • @modernprimate3279

As a pikmin veteran the lock on system and pause after throwing the minimum number of pikmin is pretty much my biggest complaint, i miss the precision of putting a pikmin exactly where i want or targeting different collectables in a pile. I also typically put a few more pikmin than necessary on items to bring them back faster but it also makes sense for the dandori battles. They just need to add a toggle for those, ultra-spicy mode, and collin

    • @carnage0685
      @carnage0685 11 місяців тому +4

Agreed. The lock on system and pause between throwing things sometime combine to make a legitimately frustrating experience where you legit have no control over what you're doing. The game pretty much strips all of it from you, and it feels absolutely horrible. It doesn't happen many times, but the fact that this happens AT ALL holds the game back a little for me. There's also the fact there's absolutely nothing to do after you 100% the game, which is alright, considering the game is a pretty good length (would be nice if it was just a bit longer), but it still kind of sucks.

Haven't gotten very far in the game, but I'm loving it so far. My least favorite part is definitely the excessive tutorials that interrupt what I'm doing, but it's so minor in the grand scheme of things. The game is gorgeous and incredibly charming and I'm having a blast exploring. And caves seem like they're a lot better than they were in 2! Pikmin 4 is definitely PEAK(min).

Really good video, and I personally agree with a lot of the stuff said here! For my personal thoughts on the new throwing system, the auto lock-on is mostly nice, but somewhat defeats the purpose of using ZR as a lock-on button. I personally find the throw limit to be really annoying though, but I understand why it's there. Personally, I love to sometimes throw double the Pikmin for the weight limit of an item so it travels back to base faster, but in this game to do that I have to throw the minimum amount, wait, make the auto target turn off, and then throw the Pikmin around the item but not at the item so they walk to it. I understand it's done to make new players not throw too many Pikmin at an item and then they forget about those Pikmin until the end of the day and they get left behind, bit it still would be nice to be able to turn things like auto lock-on and the throw limit off.

One thing I always felt about the first two was although the graphics and feel of the game is cute and cosy the game play kinda had me on edge all the time. Losing a batch of Pikmin is almost too sad and it put me off the wanting to take risks. I absolutely loved playing this game and really curious to see where it ends up ranking for me. 1 is still my favorite and 2 my least favorite and can't really decide between 3 and 4. I think 3 is a more consistently great game but it's also significantly less game. 4 has a lot of little things that bother me and it really adds up but the experience was enjoyable almost the entire way through. I'm also shocked and thankful for how much content we did get. If this was a game the length of Pikmin 3 after the long wait it would've been really hard to swallow.
In response to how veterans feel about some of the changes, specifically the lock on and the pause when you hit the required number of Pikmin, I strongly dislike them. I think they're probably good changes for a new player but for me it caused a ton of frustration. Tbh it's really fine for the main story but it's a real problem in the Sage Trials. The lack of control cost me runs for the platinum medals because I could not get the game to let me do what I wanted to do and it's infuriating. I don't understand why they can't just have a toggle for it. It's really nice to have in some situations but being on at all times is a major problem for me. I hope they could patch in an option but I highly doubt they do that.
I'm also not sure why but i find these areas very forgettable compared to the other games. Don't want to sound too negative though. I absolutely loved the game and was squealing with delight every time i saw some enemy or reference to another game. It was a joy to play.

I’m a pikmin Veteran and I would say Pikmin 4 is very decent, but I do have issues with the game.My issues with the game is that it was WAY too easy, didn’t struggle at all especially with the dog by your side, just made the game ridiculously easy. Only thing that was a challenge was trying to get platinum on a few Sage leaf challenges, but other than that the game was disappointingly easy. The 3 pikmin type limit was sad, I was lowkey excited to bring out every type at once, but oh well. The bosses are honestly horrible in this game, if you have ice pikmin and/or spicy spray they just get melted. The two new pikmin types were very cool, but overpowered, the game is already insanely easy with the auto lock on, items, and the dog, and on top of everything you can freeze monsters? Just wish they had way more sage leaf challenges. They can easily make the game harder if they have difficulty options where the monsters attack more often, and have more health based on your difficulty. You could even make hazards insta kill which would make the game more challenging. I think the rewind feature should not be in the game, it takes away the little bit of challenge it even has. Some positives are the game is gorgeous, the dog while overpowered, is super fun to use and upgrade. The sage leaf challenges were super fun (especially if you’re a perfectionist like me), the upgrade system was interesting, the few new monsters are very cool. The level designs are great too. 8/10

I absolutely love pikmin, and Ive used stick controls for every game(I've only played deluxe for 3). There's so much to love here, the game looks stunning and is so expansive, you can tell they put a lot of love into this game. But there's so many little things that hold it back for me, the biggest one being I did not expect going into this game that it would have the worst controls of the entire series(imo).
There's the auto lock on which has been touched on to death. I get that they want it to be accessible which by all means I'm on board with, but give the option for more advanced controls. There's also also halting your throws when reaching the lower limit on anything, this is something that we would do ALL the time in all the other games and now it just feels clunky. the only time i appreciate it is when I'm throwing all of one type on a hazard, but its just not worth the inclusion. and some smaller things like only 1 pikmin picking up a pellet when you throw 2 at a posy, and charge(especially oatchi charge) returning making combat against anything that's not a boss a joke.(this ones preference though, not everyone cares about combat/difficulty)
I will say though while this stuff was wearing on me throughout my play through, the game shut me up and drew me in just as much. While the story/and characters didnt really land for me, there was so much creativity on display here. If they add more options down the line this game all these issues could be completely fixed, I'm hopeful. On that note add a sound setting menu as well. I couldn't tell if the music was just lackluster for the series, or if it was because it was just too quiet.

    something a little incorrect here
time does pass in caves, but its at 1/6 the speed (which the game mentions). So if you go inside a cave, a little bit of time will have passed through the overworld. 30 minutes in a cave will equate to 5 minutes in the overworld and the overworld is 15 minutes a day

I personally really loved Pikmin 4 after I 100% completed it. As a Pikmin veteran, I can gladly say P4 is an amazing piece in the franchise. The graphics are beautiful, the gameplay is fun, and the challenge is there. I think this game is an excellent introduction for new pikmin players, even though all pikmin games are different in my opinion.
The only real gripe I really have with P4 is that the auto-lock does NOT have any way to turn it off. I really really did not like this feature. I've had countless instances where I wanted to target something besides what my autolock wanted to target, and I end up throwing my pikmin in the wrong ways. They really need to patch in a way to turn that off, especially in later challenges where your pikmin diversion really matters. I always enjoyed aiming my pikmin using the cursor as I want, spamming the throw-pikmin button like a madman. This game did not allow me that, and I was very disappointed with that feature. If I could just turn it off, this game would be 10/10 for me.

      Because it's restrictive and annoying?
I am aware you can switch while I'm being auto-locked on something, but it's clunky. Sometimes the option doesn't even appear when it should, with multiple targets in range.
There's especially some instances where there's many enemies/interactables, and my auto-lock doesn't want to target the right one when I try to "switch targets".
Your question is just silly. I should be able to throw pikmin how I want without an auto-lock feature forcing me to throw pikmin a certain way. Especially since I've been able to do so in literally all of the other games...
Have you even played the game?

    • @Cole_McGill

@@abluntuser940 yes ive played and its very intuitive. I've never had a problem with the autolock. Its worked perfectly everytime(except for things at higher elevations, but that wasn't even really possible in earlier games, not like how it is in 4).
I've played over 40hours(not actually sure how long, this is a low estimate).
With how you've talked about this, it really just sounds like you expected it to be a certian way and couldn't adapt.
The lock on is better for performance and ease of use(if you've played any game with a lock on feature).
I'm sorry that you weren't able to figure out how to use the lock-on mechanic.
But honestly, who is throwing their pikmin, just press X. Complaining about auto-lock when the swarm button makes throwing obsolete in most situations, shows that you've only made the game harder for youself.

It's not as though the game is unplayable with the auto-lock feature, but I am way more than okay with criticizing the feature because I don't like being restricted to how I want to direct my pikmin. I am allowed to complain about an annoying feature that I can't turn off. Especially when it wasn't a problem in all the previous main games...
I shouldn't have to be forced to target something I don't want to target every time I happen to walk by it, especially when there's multiple targets.
It sounds like you haven't 100%'d the game yet. There are some sections much later on where you can have up to 10-12 separate things pikmin can target in the same range, and the auto-lock feature will easily get in the way if I want to toss them. The auto-lock doesn't even allow the user to toss pikmin from different angles, which is a big yikes in caverns with the endless abyss.
You mention the swarm feature, but why would you want to swarm everything? There's plenty of instances where it's objectively better to just toss a few pikmin instead of commanding an entire squad to rush or swarm the target. I definitely don't think it's "most" situations like you state.
Throwing really should be just as easy as being able to aim where I want, and toss, just like all the other pikmin games I've completed before it.
Your reply is just snobbish and narrow minded. Auto-lock should not be forced on players. It should be an option, just like everything else in this game.

I did also kinda miss the space shot a bit. I guess they might've decided to not lean into it too much given how much more blatant the world is ours in this one, so giving a space shot which imo emphasises a more alien planet and space explorative feel, might've not been congruent with the idea of 'hey look this is Earth', though it would be in line with the perspectives of the people/crew which is exploring a relatively unknown planet to their knowledge (or atleast an alien one). Maybe they decided to remove it cause not having it creates a more 'base building/home base' feel when you stay settled in one place instead + like Nintendo Hero already said, it gives the planet a more permanent (and 'impactful') presence, like a town, which arguebly enhances the feeling of community vs just everyone in a spaceship going into space everyday.

They always freeze the enemies whenever you have them in your party so if youre trying to grow your pikmin population it hinders it especially if youre trying to grow the ice pikmins population and only theirs. It takes the best parts of all 3 past games and blends them all together masterfully in 4! The difficulty level may be an issue for some, but overall the difficulty is very similar to that of Pikmin 2, it starts out fairly easy, but there is definitely a noticeable difficulty spike towards the mid-game by the time you reach the 3rd area and beyond; The difficulty spike won't be too much of problem for Pikmin veterans to adapt to, but it will probably give newcomers to the series a run for their money in some of the more difficult late-game caves and dandori challenges.

dont get me wrong, the game is good, if this was the first pikmin game i played it would sell me on the series
but i dont think anything will be able to match 1 and 3(dx)…
its minor jank, hand holding, and lack of time limit made the main story an absolute drag
however, olimar’s side story was a blast (though id love a harder difficulty with 15 days, or more to collect), the maps feel large with lots of space that serves little purpose, while i suppose more realistic it loses the charm of the first 3s miniture gardens
i played through the game in multiplayer which made the whole thing a joke, you get constant free items and most bosses are made redundant, additionally theres tons of sequence breaks and shortcuts. this leads me to believe the multiplayer was untested.
the entire thing screams spin off and does not feel faithful to formula the first 3 games set up, and was finally close to mastery at 3dx.
for the sake of my own sanity and enjoyment of the story, the lore here isnt canon. pikmin 4 shouldnt have been mainline pikmin, imo.
as i said, a good game, but when compared to the other games it’s close to being worse than 2, saved only by improvements to pikmin AI

While I do completely disagree with basically everything you said, I also wish Olimar's shipwreck tale would be harder. On the other hand the 15 days might be a challenge for new players.
What I don't get: You blame the lack of urgency in the game and then mention Pikmin 3? That game never had any urgency except the first few days. After that the fruit potions pile up so much that I never had the feeling I need to play efficient at all.
I like the new fresh style the game has. It feels like a genuine, modern Pikmin with the charme of the prequels. I don't think this one or the older ones are better. Both styles have their own advantages.
I did not deep-dive into every little thing in the game (despite 100%ing it today), but it does not necessarily breaks the canon. It seems more like a complete separate adventure that Olimar is on.
Never played the Switch Port of 3, but I enjoy that the controls feel snappy and I don't waste my time on stupid Pikmin that will run against a wall instead of around it. I barely ever had to go back to get a Pikmin, who just wasn't able to simply follow me, into my squad.
Not sure how I'd rank the games, but I assume Pikmin 1 is the worst of them.
2, 3 and 4 all of their unique charme. 2 with the amazing caves and new funny lore with Louie, 3 with the beautiful and big levels and 4 who combines all aspects of 1, 2 and 3 while adding great ideas, such as Oatchi, which allows for a higher skill cap.

@@penwozhere Ultra spicy is Deluxe-exclusive and not the normal difficulty. It was made for people that want a challenge on purpose, which I like.
Pikmin 3 feels like a tutorial until you reach the fourth area, which is mainly because it has such a linear structure. 4 has a lot of dialogue for sure, but the tutorial parts are just some short clips, similiar to the data nodes you find in Pikmin 3 here and there. It's always annoying to rush Pikmin 3 until I got all 5 types, because before that exploring an area is somewhat useless.
But I'll not consider that as a critique. It's not meant for first playthroughs.
Pikmin 3 for Wii U definitely was easier than Pikmin 4. The areas and boss fights in 3 were 100% focused on the new Pikmin type you find in each area. It makes it kinda predictable and boring, although it also has its own charme (reminds me a bit of Mario Bros Games), while 4 focuses more on exploring with multiple pikmin types.
And the missions are (more or less) part of the Pikmin 4 story, which actually pushes beginners to play better.
The mission mode on 3 for Wii U was challenging (at least the free ones I played), but it was entirely separate from the main game, so not relevant for story mode players.

@@Rocky712_ pikmin 4 is only story mode, it gives no options for people like me who want a different experience, which, at the least, 3dx did. the mission modes are my favourite part of 3 being something i actively enjoy doing, where in 4 im doing the same ride on oatchi, get item, wait, platinum. until near the very end where i have to start doing half of what 3 had me doing. even if 3 was easy, it was at least punishing, it didnt have saftey nets. unlike 4 which feels like making baby steps towards the end, with zero chance of losing any progress. this makes 3’s difficultly, small, but interesting. and thats kind of what pikmin is all about in my opinion.

I think Pikmin 4 should have two different ratings. It's the best single player Pikmin, but the worst co-op Pikmin. It really sucks that P2 was reduced to a FPS. You can't move as P1 or P2's shot will be messed up and they have nothing to do if you've killed everything. My 11 year old was bored more often than not as P2 (and so was I when we'd switch who was P1 to be fair,) and really hates he can't just be Oatchi since Oatchi can do everything a captain can do and then some.
ETA: Pikmin veteran- auto-targetting causes more trouble than good when trying to fight. I've lost way, way too many Pikmin when trying to attack one enemy, then a second after. Once ones's dead, the game still tries locking onto the dead body more often than not, so the Pikmin are trying to pick up a body. In something like fighting two Emperor Bulbax's, that brief second trying to get the autolock to lock on the right target can end up with 10+ dead Pikmin. Just adding an option to turn it off when you want, so you can turn it off on big fights where you can't swarm and easily kill multiple enemies, would be a vast improvement.

I just want to hit the dang leaf on the ground, not auto target my pikmin picking up a carcass amidst a horde of enemies. idk what nintendo's problem is; CONTROL SCHEMES. toggle auto lock, theres already a hard lock on button why the freak does auto lock have also be forced. and toggle npc dialogue in the field. they're annoying. only russ and bernard are cool cuz they dont freaking ubisoft tell you how to play like the rest do all the time.

And, if anyone who is reading this is curious, my personal experience with pikmin is ive only ever played marble battle with my brother on pikmin 2 gamecube when we were young and pikmin 3 bingo battle, only ever watching him play pikmin 2 and 3. prior to pikmin 4 tho i have 100% marathoned all 3 games in order on switch. my favorite controls are the pikmin 2 switch aiming with motion control active when hold pikmin. the analog and motion movements aren't switchy and fennecy like 3 and more egregious 4 allowing for smooth and precise aiming to hit enemies where you want which is important. pikmin 2 control with pikmin 3/4 toggle targeting, why in space and time is that such a hard concept???

Agreed on the auto lock. Those fights with the double Emperor Bulbax's it really screwed me over. Kept locking onto the dead one trying to carry it off while the second ate them, or would try targetting the one with full life instead of the lower life. 3's ability to use L & R to cycle between targets was the better system, IMO.
