      Hi Prime. .. At a stretch Black River's not bad. But for sheer growing adventure Red Nails is Howards best: By way of plot, surpassing descriptive appeal from the first sentence, winning gradual climactic buildup, varied characterisation, treachery, madness, sex or temptation therefore, ancient feudal conclusion, spook appeal, echoes of weird. Do check it out. If you don't like it you won't have to buy me that drink when we meet.

    "The heads of 10 Picts shall pay for his and 7 for the dog."
    I read this story 25 years ago and that line always stuck with me. Seems to encapsulate Conan's stripped-down, no frills barbarian warrior code.

    Although in the story Balthous has a long inner monologue about how distant Conan is, and how he is not interested in the small comforts and beauties in life, I think this is the first time we see Conan really caring about other people. Of course in other stories he cared for the women in distress or his actual partner in crime (like Murillo) or the men serving under him. But here the settlers are the people he has always considered civilized weaklings, unable to defend themselves. Yet he chose to stay and save as many of them as he could, instead of calling it a day and leaving them to their fate. Although the story ends with its famous bleak message of barbarism's ultimate triumph, I think it's also implied through Conan that some time spent in cvilization can also shape people for the better.

    • @TheCybrarian
      @TheCybrarian  Рік тому +1

      I think he admires these people a little, or at least has less disdain for them as opposed to city folk, because these are frontier people hacking a life out of the wilderness.

      I agree! I’ve listen to all your Conan yarns so far and they are by far the best readings on UA-cam, but the voice you’ve chosen for Balthus sound like an elderly person of east Asia with halting English as a second language.

    • @reneprovosty7032
      @reneprovosty7032 2 роки тому +1

      i guess maybe 98 percent of the dialogue is between conan and balthus so is important to have a good contrast. i don't really want to argue but fundamentally this is a story about two guys meeting and interacting under a crisis. thus the contrast between the 2 main characters is key.

    I think one of the reasons this story stands out as a favorite of so many is that we have the point of view of someone other than Conan. The iconic barbarian is a larger than life figure, and Balthus is a much more personable and relatable character. As much as I love tales of Conan's exploits, I think I prefer to be a step removed from them.

    Dear God bro, this is great, I mean great narration. This is better than Mr. Creeps, Chilling Tales for Dark 🌑🕶️ Nights, Dr. Creepen, only person on the level of my Conan narrator here is Dr. No Sleep 💤😴. This person is a master story teller he's on the level of Drew Blood or Paul J. Mcsorley and he's way better than Otis Jiri. Now, if anyone who sees this is unfamiliar with any of those people, type them in UA-cam, you'll be in for an experience on the level of the Jimi Hendrix Experience (kudos and a big shout out to anyone who is familiar with any of the people I just named, I'm 38 years old and I had to do true research to discover these people, I listed them here to make things easily awesome 👍😎 for you who sees this. As much as I enjoyed this - and your work in general - I cannot help but feel that you made a misstep with the voice-work for Balthus. All the other Aquilonians have accents that suggest the British isles, if not England herself. Yet Balthus, despite being an Aquilonian, speaks with a wholly different accent. Which makes him seem like an outsider.

    • @TheCybrarian
      @TheCybrarian  3 роки тому +5

      Completely understand your point of view, but we felt since the Tauran is a wilder frontier area of Aquilonia often being settled by immigrants or refugees, and the fact that Balthus is a sort of author-insurgent character with his memories being from Robert E. Howards own life, we thought he should stand out. So we went with the voice of a plains archer like Subotai from the film.

    • @spaghettitime3263
      @spaghettitime3263 3 роки тому +2

      I have to disagree with you here. Balthus is written in this story to be a man from the eastern edge of the Aquilonian empire of a culture based loosely on Turkic/central asian horse nomad cultures, one that was a settled tributary state of Aquilonia. Balthus traveled from the eastern edge of the empire to the farthest western frontier. His accent in this reflects that. The Aquilonian empire encompassed a lot of different cultures at its height
