For a long time, I’ve had a theory that whatever music you start listening to when you’re 14 or 15 years old is the music you’ll love for the rest of your life. New wave broke big in 1978, the year I turned 15 and the Police released their first album, and while it may not be everyone’s taste, to 57-year-old me it’s still the greatest music ever. So more Police, please! And more Cars and Pretenders and Talking Heads! And don't forget Blondie and Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson!

A little music trivia: Did you know that the great Neal Peart was heavily influenced by Stewart Copeland's drumming style? In a 1986 interview with Modern Drummer, Peart listed Copeland as one of the top 12 drummers who inspired and influenced him. You can see Copeland's reggae, ska and punk influences begin to creep into "Moving Pictures" and even more so on "Grace Under Pressure" and "Power Windows". And BTW - the little ditty at the end of the song "Do I have to tell the story of a thousand rainy days since we first met, It was a big enough umbrella, but it was always me that ends up getting wet" shows up in at least two other songs: "O My God" by The Police and "Seven Days" by Sting.

  • @walthodgson5780

    "It's a big enough umbrella
But it's always me that ends up getting wet."
at the end is a reprise from the second verse which starts
"Do I have to tell the story / Of a thousand rainy days since we first met?"
Fun fact - it's returned to again in "Oh My God" from their next album, "Syncronicity", and again on "Seven Days" from Sting's solo album "Ten Summoner's Tales."

The thing about The Police is that whilst they had superb singles, such as this, they packed their albums full of bangers too. They really were one of the headline acts of the late 70's and early 80's. Copeland cites the drummers from Jimmy Hendrix experience and cream as his biggest influences which is apt as they were also three member bands like the Police. The drummer cannot sit in the background in a trio, they need to be an active part of the sound, not just the back rhythm.

Ah yes. It was the '80's. Driving someplace with my sisters. It was winter. Windows up. We were at a red light, all of us yelling along to the radio, "E-ooO E-ooO E-ooO!" Then we notice everyone in the car next to us was yelling it, too. Good times.

Stuart Copeland is criminally underrated as a Drummer. If these guys could of only got along, they could made great music for another 10-15 years.

    • @dctbass

He's not underrated by other drummers, but he is by the wider public, probably because the Police weren't a hard/heavy rock band.

@@dctbass That’s a fair point. The average person thinks of The Police as Sting. The music person thinks of the Police as Sting, Andy and Stuart.

Chris Olivo - So true. The average fan thinks of The Police as being Sting...Speak of the genius of Donald Fagan when talking about Steely Dan with no kudos to Walter Becker and so on.
Watched a U2 rooftop performance years back and when they were done, the ignorant host says “Bono! Come say hi to your fans on the other side of the roof!” - Um...it’s a *band* and the contributions of the other members shouldn’t be overlooked. Especially The Edge
I think average music fans in general equate singers as being the band 🤷🏽‍♂️

EVERYBODY recognizes Copeland's immense talent, energy, strength and influence on the music world. Critics and reviewers have been all about him since 1978. He has been on the cover of every Drummer magazine title in the world. Tens of thousands (perhaps more) of budding young drummer have been inspired by him.
This is why he is not and cannot be "underrated", as you say.

If you want to see the Police live in a very raw form, check out their performances in Urgh! A Music War. In addition to the police it also has great live performances from XTC, The Dead Kennedys, The Gang of Four, and many others.

As terrific of a song as it is, it is actually overrated by the very folk who call it underrated. Please look up the dictionary meaning of "underrated". Too many people misuse this word.

"Sweet Jane" from Rock & Roll Animal should be at least an A, if not A+ or S.
"Perfect Day" from Transformer should also rank highly.
"Take a Walk on the Wild Side" might also be an obvious choice.
The whole Album "Street Hassle" is great, but I can't think of a cut that captures its greatness by itself.
