It's not really 'a matter of fact' is it? George Lutz sounds like a nice guy but his 'story' is nothing more than a very religious man who has a very active imagination. I think he bought the house, regretted it and needed to get his family away. I've always been fascinated by haunted houses but they are only spooky stories, nothing more.

@@AaronWonderland Yes I agree with you too. I believe that he did indeed think the place was haunted but upon living there for a few weeks it turned out that neither he nor his family could settle down. The regret he had was that he thought that he and his family would be comfortable but it didn't go well for them. He knew he'd never get the money back for the house and when an opportunity arose to make money out of his story, naturally, he took it. I don't believe that he went and bought the house with that in his mind because he sounds like too nice a guy and his family look decent enough too. I do believe that in order to make a more interesting story he has chosen to embellish certain parts of it. Baring in mind, there's absolutely no video footage and no pictures of any of the phenomenon that he described. In the year 2020, no pictures or video footage of such phenomenon still exists. All we ever have is poorly rendered, blurry, dark and speculative footage. The reason for this, given the fact that literally half of the worlds population now owns a mobile phone (over 3 billion!) and we still don't have a clear picture of such phenomenon is simply because that it doesn't exist. When Mr. Lutz also starts to talk about how someone levitated 2 feet of the floor and he believes in Astral projection, it kind of tells you everything that you need to know about his mind set.

The sheer fact that anyone would bother to go through the process of buying & moving & unpacking, only to run 4 weeks later because they were terrified is enough for me to believe some truly f’d up things were going down. He is an inveterate liar. He and his wife were Ron jr's drug buddies and were hired by DeFeo's mobbed up lawyer to cover up a Genovese family hit on family associate Ron Sr., who had recently stolen 400k from the 1.6 million the mob had buried in his basement. That is 400k in 1970s dollars. There was also a contract out on Ron Jr., but he opted to take the fall for the murders.

Yes, it was the site of 6 horrific murders, but it's never been the ridiculously haunted house - seriously, paranormal pigs named Jody with red eyes??? LOL - of the books and movies. When I was in college, Mr Lutz came in and did a talk about the house. Having grown up in a haunted house myself, he came across very sincere. One of my college friends was also friends with the girlfriend of DeFaio and as a result, knew him as well. She also went to the talk. According to her, he started acting very strange and not at all like himself a few weeks before the murders. She said he wasturning into a totally different person. The girlfriend broke up with him at that point because he had changed so . My college friend also thought Lutz was credible with the story, and believed something was definitely wrong with the house.

Here's the way I heard the follow-up story from people who knew: In the late 1970's my former college roommate told me something (and obvious?) about the "Amityville" House. His parents lived in the neighboring town of Bellmore, Long Island, and had a neighbor lady...the neighbor lady's sister was the wife of the next owner, James Cromarty, who lived in the house from 1977 to 1987. WHATEVER happened in that house years before with the DeFeo family: THE HOUSE WAS NOT HAUNTED in any way shape, or form! The real problem, the new owners said, were the thieves and morons who daily and illegally crawled all over the property, doing damage and invading their privacy. They insisted this whole "haunting" by Jay Anson and the Lutz's was a made up bullcrap story to make money off it in books & movies. The street name (Ocean Avenue), and the street address numbers were changed years ago to keep residents anonymous and the curious away. Yes, I saw the house from the outside many years ago. Thanks.

So, the ONLY thing that bothers me about this is that he said the people who lived there AFTER them had a much worse experience...I thought the family that moved in after went out of their way to say that there was NO activity in the house, and that they believed the whole thing was a hoax...I always thought maybe they were lying to avoid the media and attention, but not sure if that's the case or not. The tragic event that took place in this house in 1974 is a fact. We know that Butch Defeo murdered his entire family on the night of November 13th, 1974, forty four years ago yesterday. We know that the house sat empty from November 14th 1974 until December 18th 1975, the day the Lutz family moved in. What none of us know is exactly what happened over the next 28 days leading up to the Lutz family fleeing the house (with next to nothing) in the early morning of January 14th, 1976. Now that George and Kathy are both deceased, only speculation and reasonable investigation of known facts are left to us.
Personally, I find it hard to believe that George and Kathy would go to such extreme lengths to pull off some sort of "scam" when they had NO idea if anyone would be interested in their story, much less an author write a blockbuster book that would be followed by a blockbuster movie. That is just way to much of a stupid risk to take with your entire future and the future of your kids. George and Kathy did not seem (to me anyway) to be bizarre or abnormal people. Perhaps they were just sensitive to forces most of us will never experience or understand. Whatever it was seems to have left the house when they did as the subsequent owners report no strange going ons.
The house has been totally renovated and is nothing like it was back in the 1970s, the pool is gone, there is a new addition on the river side of the house and the entire interior has been redone top to bottom and it is quite lavish and beautiful. I have to say that I would be a bit nervous to go into the house by myself even in its current state and so many years after the fact.
I found this video to be very interesting and with so many photos I had not seen before of the interior. George's narration seemed very believable to me, he did not seem like a nut job or publicity hound, he seemed very tired and sad about the whole thing. Even with whatever money they received for their story, it could not have been enough to make up for the years of horrible accusations and publicity they endured and their kids endured. Their son's documentary is really sad, he seems very troubled and is certainly not living life on easy street.
Thank you for posting this, a great new perspective on the case.

Back to the movie/topic, it wouldn't not have taken us 28 days to move out.
While house hunting 6 years ago, there wasn't very many houses on the market within our budget. We didn't want to over spend even though our Realtor wanted us to. Well, it was either the house that smelled like death. The house that literally was built on a cliff. The house in the gated community, which comes with an HOA. Or a 2 bedroom condo. Needless to say, how tempting the house that smelled like death is, we passed on that one the same day. I couldn't get past the smell. She was like it's 30K less than you wanted to spend! L🐶dy, no! The condo was outta the question for obvious reasons. We live in wqarthqua country, so the house on the side of the cliff, also a no. So we just settled for the HOA house in the gated community. Definitely not bragging. Just saying...I don't care, if anything strange or dangerous like they were going through started to happen, especially that scene where the money was gone.
We're gone! Definitely not waiting for anyone's approval or anyone to bless the house.

It was stated many times by George and others that the events in the book and film were 'Dramatized' (embellished) to help it sell. And some elements were left out or changed. I think all of the 'Bad Press' afterward was a cover up to keep property values from going down and keep people from turning the house into a carnival attraction.

William Sauer yes but to feel the air and atmosphere change around that house you couldn’t breathe it felt like someone was choking the life out of you. I know mind over matter but is it capable of doing that not just to one person but eight of us? We only came across the house by accident because we was driving passed it and someone joked that looks like the house until we saw what street we was and turned the car around and went back to have a look. That house is fricking evil and needs ripping down. We wasn’t the only ones who had these feelings look online and there’s 100’s if not 1000’s of stories all telling of the same feelings. If I ever found myself on that street again I wouldn’t stop I’d put my foot down so hard that the car went passed before the house could see me!?! 🤣🤣🤣 I don’t get scared at stuff like that but that house does something to you just being around it. There’s a house here in LA where a famous guy said his wife fell down the stairs and died but he’s been done for murder not just of his wife but a few women he knew that all died in similar situations that house isn’t to far from mine and just driving passed that you get the same feeling you get around this house. I hate going passed that house but you’ve got no choice there’s no other way out. Even my children hate the house and refuse to go anywhere near it, they prefer walking the long way around through the woods to the main road then walk passed that house and it’s gates. I’m sure I’ve heard it’s been turned into a TV show/documentary type thing but not bothered checking I don’t want to know. I know something happened there because in the summertime the murder tour’s of LA are always there which pisses me off if I’m trying to get to work or my kid’s to school or wherever they need to be because the damn bus blocks the road. And the neighbours not happy because they use their driveway to turn around because you can only get out the way you drive in. Messed up. I was a kid/teenager at the time we saw this house I wouldn’t go out of my way looking for famous murder house’s now I’m a mother of six in my late 30’s.

People or a certain group of people are often the conduits for a haunting. One family could move into a dwelling and experience nothing while another could move in and experience something like the Amityville Horror. Much of it is based on certain combinations of psyche and personal beliefs/past traumas that allow this to manifest. Similar to a slot machine coming up all 7s etc. Carl Jung wrote in depth about this.

Absolutely. Lutz was messing with occult matters. I met, years ago, a woman who genuinely believed that her home is infested by demons who were trying to possess her as well. It started after she got deeply involved in studying occult, and practicing automatic writing. I had visited her on numerous occasions, but never saw or felt anything unusual in her house. Eventually, the woman moved out and her son with his family moved in. THEY still live in that house and never once witnessed anything paranormal. However, the mother who got a condo in a brand new building, must have brought her own demons with her, as she continued her "fight". Used very unconventional methods - for instance, vacuuming her body orifices with the vacuum cleaner pipe.. Or, cut the air around herself with long scissors - as her demons apparently attached themselves to her with tangible threads..

I do believe that this was real & my reasoning for that is in the form of a question. M Perry I just now saw this. This house was empty for a year after the murders. What I’ve found is that abandoned structures attract demonic entities for some reason. I found an abandoned lake house near Austin, Texas. My son and I went in at midnight one night to do a “ghost hunt”. We had watched those type of shows and thought it would be fun. Turns out the house had been abandoned for 13 years. We had an old Sony Nightshot camcorder that my son carried. Though the house was empty and the night calm we heard loud thumps, knocks, and loud pounding all over the house. These are clearly heard on tape. We didn’t hear any talking but on tape there was my son asking: “What’s all this pounding?” To which you can hear different voices say “Satan”, “kids”, “f***ing pigs.” There’s lots of cursing. I was blown away and this increased my faith tenfold in the Bible and Jesus. People watch the tape and of course some claim it is fake but it is absolutely the truth. There’s something perfect about the iPhone’s electronics that it can pick up EVPs and see orbs. Many friends have used the phone’s video recorder with the phone’s light on in a dark room and have seen orbs, captured EVPs. I tell people to try it in different places and many have changed their minds about the paranormal after their experiences. It has to happen to someone before they’ll believe it.

I know George worked very hard at convincing us that he was truthful years after the fact because the family pushed him out after.... And he did. tracie bolton First, I would like to thank you for responding as this must be difficult for you after all the years of chaos you must have endured. Unfortunately social media and a narrow minded, entitled society leaves most people self proclaimed experts on things they have decided are true, which are not actual facts, and they’ve never once looked into them to boot. People too often feel their own belief is a record of fact which is why cognitive dissonance is a rampant disease. I DO believe you. I also believe that most of what the media (news) informs the public is controlled bullshit. I’m sure your family has been destroyed time and again so others could capitalize off the story and sadly the rumors do nothing but serve to pour salt into a horrendous wound. No one knows what goes on behind others closed doors. Period. There is evil in very high places and what happened at your Uncle’s house is not unique. There is much more to all of this than what the know it all public will ever know. There’s a darkness that is well known and your Uncle’s story matches up. Let people talk about it being debunked. They believe it because someone said it was fake and wrote a book and made up stories to go along with it. So it must be true right? Because the internet said it’s fake right? Of course!! 😣 .... My advice to them is look up the real history of the United States, look up Freemasons, learn what you were never taught in school, and then revisit your Uncles story. They will be a believer then. I assure you of that. Critical thinking people. Use your own minds and study it yourself. You will wish you didn’t once you do. Tracie thank you again for responding. I appreciate it. I’m sure others do too. ❤️

Rest in peace, Kathy Lutz and George Lutz. I’m sorry you and your children had to go through so something so dramatic I live in California I hope when you moved to California that things got better I just felt so much for the children because I’m the same ages one of the boys as of today they must’ve gone through a lot to leave everything behind. Just nobody would do that I move all the way to California and when they got to the counter at JFK to get tickets they just signed over their car to the ticket agent said here at yours and I just flew to San Diego and started fresh. I They had a 🧳 for each of them and just just go to San Diego and start over there no longer with us George and Kathy but Kathy seem to have the sweetest calming gentle voice ever when you hear her in her interviews very lovely woman. I hope you are resting and have eternal peace and eternal love for 🌺Kathy🌸 and George 🙏🙏🩵💙🩵💙🩵💙🩵💙🩵💙💙🩵🌺🩵🌸🌺

Met Lutz at a paranormal conference when I first started writing. He struck me as genuine, though I think he suffered from the same malady as the Warrens in that he was so scared by what happened he couldn't understand that it was just a haunting. Not some demonic horror movie crap.

Hauntings and the demonic go hand in hand,

genuine enough to go to paranormal conferences despite being so scared he and his family ran from alleged paranormal activities. Its a scam and the Warrens were scammers
