  • In this video, I demonstrate two methods for forming a taper on wire. Method one uses hammers and method two, a rolling mill and hammers. I also show you how to draw wire, so that you can adjust the gauge and shape of your wire and tubing. One method demonstrates the use of a draw plate and a vise and the other, using a draw bench and a draw plate. The techniques demonstrated can also be used for creating tubing, changing the shape of your wire, creating wire from ingots and drawing down, or resizing tubing. Tapered wire is used for pin back, brooches, hat pins, stems for flower making, graduated curls and many other uses.

    Nancy,
I love the fact that you don't take yourself (and your instructional style) too seriously. It's so much easier to learn while feeling entertained than it is when your mind is numb from boredom. The inside of my eyelids get more of my attention than some pretentious douchebag extolling on their own perfection. I am an intermediate metalsmith learning about finer jewelry and I am so glad I found your channel! (And I'm glad you explained how UA-cam ads work in one of your videos...I never skip them anymore!)
Thanks for the generous and open sharing of your knowledge and experience.

great video! When tapering with the hammer, if you establish the tip first then work from the tip back up to your mark it will be easier and more even. That's an old blacksmiths trick that works on cold "draw down" of most metals.

I love it when you explain what can go wrong. I can almost see the film on scores of mistakes going through your mind ;-). That’s how learning happens ! I learn plenty of alternative routes just by getting lost :-). Love getting lost !

I've been watching your videos, and I have to say, you are great. You have all the answers and solutions to those wacky little questions that have been hindering me, and I'm like "ooooooohhhh" when you say this or that. You are a god send. The teachers don't tell you those things and I had been blocked. Many thanks!

Just started out doing some piercing/jewellery stuff as a new hobby now I'm less active. As usual learning a lot from 'The Tube'. I had to watch this twice as I was laughing so much. Mad as a frog!! Love it.

Thank you Nancy! I've been holding off getting a draw plate and now that I have seen that it isn't the monster I was fearing I may go ahead and get one. Going to have to find someone to build me that draw bench though...

Nancy, thank you so much for this! Can you possibly make a video about rolling an ingot down to the point that it could be drawn through a drawplate using flat rollers and not square wire rollers? Is that possible? Would love to see what to be aware of when you only have flat rollers on a mill.
Thank you so much for your videos!

I have a draw plate and wondered if I needed to learn some special way to keep the tapered tips from constantly snapping off. Well, answer seems to be "Nope." Thank you for that. Also for the actual lubricant use. My draw plate instructions (a vintage unit bought through ebay) suggested that you torch the wire as you pull, and use graphite. The torch while drawing seemed like a good way to set fire to my bench, and graphite hasn't been working all that well. (Also now I need proper draw plyers, or make them out of an old pair of plyers.)

i think she is just a bit self conscious about the droop we all get as we get older on the ends of the mouth that can make us look sad or cross. a little filler and5 min would fix that

@@carianin5293 Haha! I was so guna say this. She is pretty hott. She looks almost exactly like my aunt, and everyone loves her. The boys in school used to say "we see where you get your looks from." Anytime she would come get me and it would always make me feel all proud of her and proud to have a hott aunty. I bet her child(ren) got the same growing up. Nothing like having a gorgeous momma.

I also wanted to comment on your smiling…well, you do a wonderful job without the fake smiles… We aren't here for you to put on a pr campaign…we're here to learn from you. So, whomever told you you have to be more personable and smile more during the making of your vids…well, you don't have to 'sell' yourself…We've all already bought in! Or…am I just your number 1 fan? Love…again, Meow Cow

Did you make the draw bench? It looks like a boat trailer winch, (almost spelled that "boat wench", something else altogether) and a length of channel iron would do it.

Ooh my lovely husband just got me a black and white apron just like yours...so I don't burn if I drop hot things on my lap ....no I don't do that very often but you never know. ..he's a chef and is in charge of safety in the kitchen so I always have safety glasses, masks etc. (Of course I couldn't think why they'd need safety glasses and masks in a kitchen. ...'obviously (says hubby)its for hazardous cleaning materials! ' which shows you exactly how domesticated I am...barely house trained if you were to ask him....lol!

OMGOSH! Now, if I could only work like you… Oh…and BTW…I love the vid…I ALWAYS get something juicy out of them… Love, Meow Cow >^..^
