Glad to see Joey putting up his more niche interests in this channel. The girl on the shore manga is definitely hard to recommend and read just like Oyasumi Punpun. To me it evokes similar feelings to when listening to japanese 80's city pop music cuz that shit evokes emotion that you can't explain entirely.
Watching this reminded me of this thread. This is the first time I've heard someone accurately describe the feeling we get with city pop/j-pop/j-jazz ua-cam.com/video/gFXcwv9XISc/v-deo.html
As a writer the Girl on the Shore does make me wish I can portray sexuality as not a means to entertain or pleasure my audience, like many manga writers tend to do, but have it be core to the central themes at play in my work. I've read several novel and visual novels in fact that dive into these themes without making it feel like erotica or porn. The Girl on the Shore is that for me, there are explicit scenes, a lot more explicit than seinen dare to go, but the work definitely doesn't feel like porn. I'm reminded me of my early sexual explorations through the characters and what it means to be connected to someone. How the main protagonist goes back and forth if she really likes the guy she's with or is just with him for sex, and how frustrated the guy is because of this. It's a fascinating read.
A girl on the shore was the first Inio Asano manga I ever read and I fell in love with his type of writing. It's hard to do a movie adaptation and also as imagine didn't work.
I think it could work. However you would need to go at it in the 1930's French realism style of movie. but then that in it self is a pretty difficult type of movie art to do well. As it requires really really good acting.
Inio Asano to me exemplifies the adage that "the more specific the story is, the more universal it becomes." His work is so specific, so singular, and yet the meaning and the emotions are so relatable. We will probably never find ourselves in the exact spot in life that Koume and Isobe were in, but we do understand being confused teenagers, exploring identities and sexualities, confiding closely with someone, being left behind by certain family members. And it's atmospheric and slow and personal and internal and I am not surprised a movie was not able to do it justice. Some stories should remain in the medium they were intended for, for a reason.
I saw girl on the shore read the first few pages, saw the art, checked the author and promptly looked at my schedule for the week and decided. No i will not be depressed for the week.
A girl on the shore is my least favorite manga out of all Inio Asano's works and for a long time I couldn't put my finger on why. Now I understand why: it's purely emotionally driven, not plot driven story. I haven't experienced anything like that in my teen years and there isn't enough exposition of the characters for me to reject the disbelief. But at the same time I greatly appreciated Downfall. Even though I haven't experienced midlife crisis yet, I could understand MC's frustration in life because I've been in the similar state of mind before.
I went and read and I agree with you, it felt like the characters were almost caricatures of what adults think sexually active teenagers are like. We were being told that a character was an obsessive otaku, but were given very little actual evidence of it, for example
I agree with this. I've been a huge Inio Asano fan for such a long time and I honestly feel A Girl on the Shore is among my least favorite. I still think it's good and worth reading but it's not really one I find myself remembering, unlike Solanin, a much tamer and much older work
After reading the manga, I'm going to agree with you. When I finished, I went straight to the internet, In I was shocked by all the things I missed while reading it, because I don't have the right background to connect with it. I love that a manga like that exist, Asano is a master like always, but I can't form a complete opinion about it, at least not now. I don't fully get it, and that's all.
Joey, seriously, I almost wish you had put this on the main channel so more people could see it. This was such a good evaluation of a manga, it was just compelling listening too. It pulled me in so hard. I just went and ordered it and I so can't wait to read it.
I feel like the first page explains the themes and the "point" of A Girl on the Shore pretty well. In town, there's a tiny beach that's never busy, not even in the middle of summer. I used to like walking there, looking for stuff. Like old fireworks. Or kelp. A hat knocked off someone's head by the wind. *you basically never find what you were expecting to. And maybe you weren't expecting to find anything right from the start* it's not necessarily about the plot, but about the things we find and discover about ourselves along the way. The plot is just a way to show this.
@@justaguywholikespie8221 Shitty? I don't know if that's the correct words. This one was less depressing than oyasumi punpun. But honestly it's a good read for me. Like Joey said, honestly the best way to decide is to read it.
Dude I'm so happy you're recommending this, I read this manga at least once every few years because of how cathartic the events it portrays are. And despite reading it over and over, the turning in my stomach never stops, it's incredibly powerful.
Joey is often the one we hear the least on Trash Taste but I love it when he speaks up and shares something he likes! whether it is on the podcast or in these "unedited" videos.
my boyfriend recommended me inio asano and I instantly fell in love with his works. I like how make the characters have depth in them, not just a flat character. I just read umibe no onnanoko an hour ago and I liked it.
When I recommend Inio Asano’s works I always give caution that they are very dark and mature, and that the characters and the story are portrayed very raw and unfiltered, almost as if his style is indeed to try and make you hate them, feel uncomfortable, or put off. It’s part of the beauty of his works because you could both hate some of its content but love it all the more and the reading journey it has taken you
Love this mangaka. Solanin, Dededededestruction, Punpun, Girl on the shore. They're all special to me. Punpun was the first work I've read that Inio made. Which is also the most popular. Do yourself a favor and give them a shot
I remember reading this manga many years ago when I was in my late teens. This manga left me feeling so conflicted. I liked it but I also felt horrible at the end of it. This really shows how Inio Asano can make such an impactful story in such a short manga. Might have to re-read it now.
I actually purchased AGOTS on Aki's recommendation a few months ago and it's one of my favourite mangas now. It definitely is a manga that I was initially a little shook by with the explicit art portrayals, but when I did finally finish it - those scenes didn't matter overall. The feelings/thoughts I experienced after finishing the manga were those of reminiscing on my own childhood and how I treat those around me now. It really makes you think about yourself as a person and how you can affect others, and how that can shape a person. Granted - when I re-read it now, I skip those scenes lol.
I read a Girl on the Shore with no knowledge. I saw it in the shelves and thought "Oh, I like the art of the cover" and bought it. I left being quite depressed and questioning if I wanted to continue owning the book.
As uncomfortable the manga made me feel, I genuinely liked it. A lot of people can relate and understand the need to cope with loneliness and insecurities.
I was curious to see how the movie would stick that .. ASANO energy, while I still need to see it for myself, I’m kinda not surprised that the ball got dropped in a sense.
I love acting so it's sad to hear that the acting of the two main characters are bad since it's supposed to be a character study film. It heavily relies on emotional beats and character depth to tell it's story. That's probably why it's so hard to do character study films cuz the actors gotta be hella good.
I hate to say it but it’s a little difficult to find really good acting in Japan. It has nothing to do with the actors but more so the casting done here. They almost always go for “idols” or they often just fuck up casting cause they prioritize looks (as it seems to be the case in this movie). Solanin is an exception
@@mandoloriansoju3841 I see. I hope they soon add the same quality check of acting, like they do for voice acting in anime. I would definitely recommend the book, The Power of the Actor: The Chubbuck Technique, for anyone who wants to get into acting.

I honestly have struggled for quite some time with trying to find a way to describe what reading that manga felt like, and I think you are right in saying that the story isn't the important part at all. In a way it paved the way for my current taste in entretainment
Inio Asano is the best manga artist ever. I really love his works. They leave me in shook for days and i can't stop thinking about them. Every one of them!
My first Asano manga. At the time I wanted to read some dumpster fire chaotic shit and the plot really served it. It’s so hard to put the emotion i felt as a reader into words. Idk. Just read it it’s heart wrenching.
I dunno, this can be made into a casual section of a main channel show. It feels as good as the usual ones. Sure it isn't any fancy backgrounds but you know, it feels also refreshing to see a break in between for all the already high quality productions of the main ones
I got a very serious vibe from this video which is different from what I'm used to seeing out of Joey. He's made serious videos in the past but I feel like the very large majority of them were announcement videos. This one seemed more along the lines of his video towards Logan Paul in the way the you can tell that he is genuinely upset. It makes for an awkward but extremely human mood and it's interesting to get to see that part of Joey.
This was one of my favorite manga so i saw the movie with my girlfriend. Annnnd it inspired her to cut me off cause she thought she was the same as Koume lmao. I did think Isobe was a bit too agressive in the film, but I cant pick up on subtilties because I am not fluent in Japanese and there are not English subtitles in a Japanese theater.
Haven´t read this manga yet but from how the author´s writing style was described, I think that maybe there isn´t really a storyline because it´s emulating life in a way? Like there isn´t a straightforward, cohesive storyline of one´s life but rather a random chain of events etc without a proper, conclusive ending, if that makes sense?
This video made me read that manga. And I don't regret that. At first i thought these teens are dumb they do stuff what i will never do in my entire life. But after that thought I kinda related to them. It would be a lie if i said there was never in my life some kind of unsatisfaction or feel of regret. And to heal that I had to do something what would've been probably not that healthy to me, like eating too many candies, giving up, spending some time alone and forgetting about all of my friends who I had. I actually wanted to try to describe the plot of what I understood in manga, but I feel like I didn't pay that close attention to the plot while reading it, so I deleted all of it and wrote about how i related to it. The only thing I payed attention in that manga was to characters, their emotions, back story, their and entire mood, a sea what makes you forget all the stuff and your worries.
EDIT: loving this channels laid-back and almost raw vibe. Gonna have to check out A Girl on the Shore when I get some more time (and punpun also). Yo Joey, referring to your office video for music recommendations (I'll leave a comment there too). Based on your mad collection I got a few recommendations. You should check out Ryo Fukui, Funky DL (especially "life after Dennison"), Cise Star, Bill Evans, MF Doom (especially the song 'Sorcerers'), All That Jazz, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Fujii Kaze, Lone Catalysts, Kenichiro Nishihara, Dave Brubeck, Pete Rock, Marcus D, Ahmad Jamal, Kazumi Tateishi Trio, and Gang Star. Whew.. you might not like all of them but there should be something in this big mix. Mostly jazz and hip-hop and things inbetween those (no classic rock - haven't dove into that yet haha). Love your videos as always and inspiring me to give UA-cam a shot. Thanks Joey :)
Please give your thoughts on Scissor 7, a Netflix anime series, even though it's a Chinese anime and not Japanese. It's quite a show and I (and many others I guess) would love to know your thoughts on it, just like Avatar the last air bender.
Can only think of the AKFG song for Soranin. Vaguely remember the show is about some girl wanting to be a rock star or something? This Girl on Shore, I don't know though.
Inio Asano just hits different. First started collecting manga while reading Punpun, had to force myself to stop reading digitally and order the rest of the volumes on Amazon to experience it fully. Loved Solanin and Girl on the shore, I’ve owned Downfall for months but can’t get into the mindset to read it because I know it’ll fuck me up.
wow I have this manga in my shelve for years but never read it till the end. At the time I got the Manga I was 12 and not familiar with Inio Asanos work, I dropped the manga because it confused me a lot and almost did not really make sense for me. After seeing this video and hearing about you're opinion about the live action movie and the manga, I am finally going to read the Manga. I want to read it and make my own opinion about it and have my own perspective about the message. Thank you very much for posting this Video.

I much more appreciate this style of video than the kind you do on your main channel: 1. you are far more relaxed and serious 2. the video has focus (on a topic) Despite me beeing fan since a long time, this channel is new to me. I really like it. And I hate saying this, but this channel does a disservice to my distaste toward this parasocial relationship thing. I do not watch streams or follow people on twitter etc., but what you say here gives me the feeling, that you are some kind of soulmate. Inio Asano is the best manga artist ever. I really love his works. They leave me in shook for days and i can't stop thinking about them. Every one of them!
Ive been waiting years for this video!
i read it 4 years ago and the only thing i remember it was being pissed about middle schoolers fucking
I love all his stuff too. It’s beautiful art. Have you read downfall?
The police siren in the background kinda makes the video unnerving tbh.
just finish the manga because of this video, I desperately need him to talk about it more in depth
Happy to be that early and I also love Inio Asano and your taste.
I'm starting to really like this channel
oh god, there is a chance that Oyasumi Punpun gonna be animated now right ?
This manga is amazing as well as fucked up to the core at the same time. So reader beware.
Damn, I didn't know that Solanin got a movie adaptation, I love the manga, will definitely check out the movie, thank you Joey
FYI for anyone who just wants to know Joey's rating for the movie it's at 15:33
Inio Asano just hits different.
This is main channel content right here folks.
I read the manga a few years ago and loved it. Didn't know a movie was being made. I wanna see it now...
wow
I have this manga in my shelve for years but never read it till the end.
Thank you very much for posting this Video.
do you want to feel depressed? read inio asano
do want to feel like you're a good person? read inio asano
do you want to feel like youve been an asshole before? read inio asano
do want to develop trust issues? read inio asano
basically, read inio asano.
The title alone has me interested
just a warning tho it has uncensored cp
I much more appreciate this style of video than the kind you do on your main channel:
1. you are far more relaxed and serious
2. the video has focus (on a topic)
Despite me beeing fan since a long time, this channel is new to me. I really like it. And I hate saying this, but this channel does a disservice to my distaste toward this parasocial relationship thing. I do not watch streams or follow people on twitter etc., but what you say here gives me the feeling, that you are some kind of soulmate. I do not write this in a pm, because it would be even more creepy, I guess :P
I guess the fact that you praised Asano and Worlds End Girlfriend in one video just gave me the feels :D
I remember reading this on a whim and didn't expect it to be what it was.
The Manga Man back at it again
Well...I guess I have to go read this now XD Anyways keep up the amazing videos Joey
I've been reading Goodnight Punpun (finally) and oohhh boy. I can agree that Asano is a master mangaka
Love the video. Maybe upload more niche recommendation here you know. Something that’s not mainstream.
Joey always does Inio Asano justice so amazing
Really want to see the movie hope it is obtainable legally soon
finally an inio asano manga review
