For everyone asking for the English titles: S Tier: Princess Mononoke, Kiki's delivery service, Pom Poko, When Marnie was here, Spirited Away, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind A Tier: Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Whisper of the Heart, My Neighbor Totoro, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya B Tier: Grave of the Fireflies, Arrietty, Ponyo C Tier: Porco Rosso, The Cat Returns D Tier: Ocean Waves F Tier: The Strange Case of Dr Jelly and Mr Joey
Surprised no Laputa. All of the prototypical elements of the later films are there. And My Neighhours the Yamadas is solidly A-tier, it looks simple and low budget until it gets going. Not S-tier because it's a bit overly long by the 3/4 mark, but big whopping hint: don't let the art style fool you, the animation is gorgeous.
Grave of the Fireflies is a masterpiece. Sure, it's not the most enjoyable film... But what it communicates about the struggle of life and war is unparalleled in animation.
How did he put it as b? He says it’s because it’s hard to rewatch cause it’s to emotionally draining and sad, but that’s the whole point of the film. That’s like saying goodnight punpun (which is his fav manga) isn’t a masterpiece because it’s hard to re read
It’s very much not a movie you want to watch again, but if you do it is still remarkably powerful. I watched it as a teenager with my dad and we both sobbed our eyes out and said we wouldn’t watch it again. I then decided to take a Post-War Japanese Culture class in college which meant of course watching this again, and while I did have to fight tears in class it still resonated just as deeply that second time.
It was awful. The main character was an unlikable brat. The setting was crushing, but any other mc would have made the story more compelling. At the end of the movie I wasn't sad, I was furious. SPOILERS: The little sister's death was a consequence of the older brother immature actions.
@@nemoatlantis7148 Princess Nausicaa is too pure and I love her. But she's too pure. Even if both has conflict, Princess Mononoke's feels more compelling but it has more or less the same theme of struggle between nature and technology and the want or need of coexistence.
Really would've liked if the editor showed the cover of the movies while Joey thinks about the what he remembers about the movie and the ranking. It has been so long I have seen a ghibli movie and the names I don't particularly remember or recognize aside from the popular ones.
@@Gokul-ge6fj I didn't know that actually and I probably just got too used to mudan the machine's edits where you like know what the host is talking about as he shows pics to back up what the host is talking about specifically.
The wind rises is probably the most underrated ghibli film. People either haven't seen it or just don't talk about it, but I think it is top tier, like probably within the best 3 ghibli films
A question has to be asked. Does the artisan take fault from his craft if his/her work is used to hurt other people? The Wind Rises shows us the contrast of a man's sincerity of his work to be used for greater good versus it is actually used. It took time on showing us how the protagonist loved flying machines and his wife, and his struggles on dealing with what he loved. Its actually kinda tragic. Love this film. Yeah this movie really is about love. Dang.
I didn't realize what Grave of the Fireflies was about, and decided to watch it as part of a Ghibli marathon. This marathon was done since I was lonely on my first Christmas alone. It was not a good time.
You should have ought to watch Tokyo Grandfathers(I know its not Ghibli) instead of watching that for Christmas. You'll feel more like Jesus died rather than Jesus being born on that day if you watch Graveyard of the Fireflies in that day.
I had fun watching it, but from all the Ghibli movies I had watch. Its the one Ghibli movie that I hardly remember the main plot points. I had a wierd feeling for this movie, like I cannot unforget the Name "Nausiccaa" and the catchy "Titular song of the movie. But I barely remember what the characters have been doing in the movie.
@@Snzn_7 I guess it does have some of those chaotic elements that Mononoke-hime and Howl's Moving Castle have, without any specific focus. Still, it is worth a re-watch if you want to see the impact of some of the scenes and the relevance of the topic today.
If u love the movie, u should read the Manga aswell, it delves deeper into the story and characters of Nausicaä, both the Movie and Manga are severely underrated, my favorite story when it comes to Studio Ghibli
From Up On Poppy Hill sits firmly within the S tier for me. There’s a lot of takes on the plot being washy or slow, but there’s something so charming and hopeful about it, I can’t help but love it. I regard Tales from Earthsea as B tier and believe it’s an awesome fantasy worthy of a watch, despite being torn to bits by critics and being labeled as “the worst Ghibli film” - I personally don’t agree. Apparently it strayed from the books, but I can’t speak on this as I’ve not read the series. I think people need to give Gorō Miyazaki a break - he’s not his father, and I admire his willingness to stray from the path and try different things. I’m excited to see what he does next (except for Earwig and the Witch, let’s pretend that never happened…)
I actually enjoyed From Upon Poppy Hill(no joke!) It's better than Earthsea, but I don't consider Earthsea a "terrible" movie. Just weak at worst, average at best. But that's mostly due to Cob constantly whispering throughout the film, until the big climax. Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, Mononoke, and Totoro are my top favorite Ghibli movies.
Yay for sweet cheesy teen romcoms 😁👍👍 Coming from a former (with full regret) fan of Western film romcoms but disillusioned after I realized how bullshit it was but mostly because of 500 days of summer, From Up on Poppy Hill was a fresh take and a nice breather of a budding romance between two teens from previous generations and their struggles back then. Like even though they are still young enough to enjoy their youth, they should also be mature enough on making decisions that will affect their life ahead if they're willing to be with each other. Would've wrote more but I have to face the realism in today's society soooooo....
Unfortunately, despite it being visually captivating, I consider Earthsea the most disappointing Ghibli movie. The source material was perfect for a Ghibli adaptation, but they twisted and muddled the original story in such a way that it feels incredibly confused. They basically use elements of the plots from 3 of the 4 main books all combined and it just doesn't work well. I don't believe and one to one adaptaion was needed, but maybe if they'd dialed it back to taking elements from just two of the books it may have worked, but they tried to put too much in without giving enough focus to any one aspect to do the books' themes justice. The missed opportunity is only really apparent if you do read the books, and the books should be read by all fans of fantasy, they are ludicrously underappreciated by general audiences.
@@undead_corsair I sadly haven't read the books Earthsea is based on. But I get the feeling if I did, I'd probably see the film in a more negative light. As is, it's just a very weak movie. While I have seen worse movies, by Ghibli standards, yeah it's not very good.
I've never seen Tales of Earthsea. But I couldn't even finish My Neighbors the Yamadas and Only Yesterday was a bore (also the protagonist was 27 but looked 50 everyone she laughed). So my guess is it'll be better than those two.
It should be illegal for anybody who isn't italian to rank Porco Rosso... Jokes aside it's true that that movie is basically a fucking love song to Italy and so being italian I always loved it, the quote "Better a pig than a fascist" is such an iconic phrase, and very important to this day as there is a fucking law that bans fascism in Italy and still a good chunk of the population is fascist for some reason.
That quote is definitely iconic, and the scene with all the Italian grandmothers making pasta for the women working on the plane is so endearing. Everybody in that scene feels like a real person I would see at a family gathering, which makes the film feel extra special, and that realism is one of the strengths of Ghibli films as a whole, I feel.
Porco Rosso should've been in A tier only for the "heaven" scene, it may be one of my favourites scenes from any Ghibli movie. And I would go as far as putting it in S tier, but that's just my bias.
@@rocker1407 The first time I watched the English dub, I thought everybody was exceptionally well casted except Keaton, who I kept hearing "I'm Batman!" But I've grown to love it over the years.
Not my fav but definitely up there in my list too. Might be tied in the 2nd place with Mononoke, being Spirited Away in the top. My sister really likes it and the memories of watching it on VHS is nostalgic.
@Aoty Definitely! Might not have the best told nor strongest message Mononoke, Spirited Away and Grave of the Fireflies have, but it's without a doubt one of the most gorgeous looking, it has one of the most unique and creative art direction/design and it's enjoyable as hell. Oh, yeah! The soundtrack is AMAZING.
I feel like When Marnie was There is definitely a targeted movie, much like The Wind Rises. It’s not for the general population, like say Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Serice, Howl’s Moving Castle, or Spririted Away. Personally, this movie is one of the dearest movies to me because I saw myself in Marnie. I could resonate with her being held back with her asthma (since I have asthma since childhood, as well), her struggle with her body image, the storm inside her mind which caused aversive effects on her relationships, and her bond with her grandmother. I have never had such a melancholic yet happy feeling while watching any other movie. But at the same time, I can see why most Ghibli fans would think it’s mediocre.
While Grave of the Fireflies punches you with sorrow and sadness, When Marie was There is a bittersweet kiss of melancholy. That's why I love the latter more than the former. The first was just extreme, but the other one felt more emotional.
Whisper of the Heart is absolutely phenomenal!! It was controversial in the west?? Edit: Fun fact: if you ever wondered where the lofi girl aesthetic originated from, it's from this movie
I believe it was poorly received in the west due to it being different to other ghibli films in the sense it was mostly a romance and lacked the fantasy themes present in most ghibli films. Even if the film had initial backlash, I hope anime fans were able to look past the difference and enjoy it for what it is, a great movie! I personally really enjoyed it
Only Yesterday is BY FAR my favourite studio ghibli film, I totally get why you didn't understand it as a kid tho, it's pretty subtle and mature but it's so nostalgic and amazing!! I think it captures the emotions of childhood and growing up super well and there's something so charming about it. Would highly recommend it!
one of my favorite ghibli movie with whisper of the heart, but you need to be prepared as it is a 2 hour movie, pretty slow pace and mostly drama and talking so i understand that it doesn't appeal to everyone but even a decade after my initial watch i still really enjoy it. before watching it, i watched other takahata and kondo movie so i was prepared but most people that only watched miyazaki movie in the west were sure taken aback.
Same here. And has some of the best shots and sequences in any animation film i've seen. Kaguya as well. Goes under the radar almost all the time, mostly due to the nature of the story.
Oh I can certainly relate. And just like you're saying it, it makes an absolute sense that Joey didn't grasp what is being presented to him as a kid, it's much more of a movie for a matured audience with lots of nostalgic inserts here and there. I've watched it many times and as I proceed I'd start tearing up many times throughout the entire piece. There is so much I still remember, like exact feeling of certain scenes together with OSTs and what not. It's so amazingly well executed, I just can't stop loving it.
you absolutely need to rewatch only yesterday,,, i didn’t love it as much the first time but oh my god it’s one of my favourites and i think the ACTUAL most underrated ghibli film (it’s definitely more geared toward adults than kids)
Absolutely. Only Yesterday is so underrated. If I can compare ghibli to zelda games, Joey saying that pom poko is the most underrated is like people saying that spirit tracks is the most underrated, when in reality most people straight up forget the only yesterday even exists, just like most people forget about minish cap.
Out of all the Studio Ghibli films, this gave me the most butterflies in my stomach feeling ☺️ Made me blush like a fool for minutes damn. But aside from the subtle hint of urbanisation message, it's a very great film of coming to terms of your inner child and your present self.
Feel like I'm alone in saying Arriety is my favourite Ghibli film, I think the majority of it's elements are done better in other Ghibli films. But for whatever reason, it really resonates with me
Secret world of Arriety was my first Ghibli movie I saw in theater and I loved it. I’ve never seen anyone talk or mention it even when I brought it up. it confused me so much on why some ppl kept denying it was a Ghibil movie.
A charming friendship between a boy and little people. This film reminds us on not being way too dismissive and tap on the curious side of our inner child. On that note, I would like to send my sincere regards for those people who love this film and take part on cancelling anything and everything on twitter. Sending all my love to you.
I have watched Kaze Tachinu (english title: The wind rises) and it is in general a good movie that fans of Miyazakis works should watch at some point. It's more like a historical drama though than your typical anime movie but it portrays artists/designers/artisans passion to their craft in an interesting way and the complexities that could arise from this (the movie is about an airplane engineer during ww2 who designs military aircrafts).
I found it quite nice as well. While the movie kinda combines a real life figure with one of a book, the real life figure is actually quite interesting being someone who loved his craft yet would also not shy away from expressing his distaste for the war despite his craft essentially supporting it. The romance side of things is moreso based on the book iirc, but even that was quite interesting I'd put it in the same camp as Grave of Fireflies, just not as tragic sad, as in a movie that's good to watch once but doesn't really have much rewatchability
Omoide Poro Poro (Only Yesterday) is a film I doubt any children would appriciate in the same way as an adult would, so I do recommend rewatching it now that you're older, Joey. We have a very similar taste in Ghibli movies so I'm pretty sure you would enjoy it a whole lot more now. It's definitely one of my favorite Ghibli movies (I'd say S or A tier), and it's my favorite film by Isao Takahata.
I 💩 you not, I watched ALL of the Ghibili films for the first time last year around Christmastime and whilst watching Only Yesterday, I totally got that vibe... I'm 22 now and growing up kinda sucks (I don't want to sound like an irresponsible person but sometimes I wish I could be a kid again)
Poppy Hill totally made me nostalgic to be a highschooler in Yokamha during the Showa era, and apparently a lot of Japanese people agreed because it did really well domestically, but the plot after the cute Kyu Sakatomos sequence was like..."Who in upper management incested that they were going to go with this storyline?"
Apparently Hayao Miyazaki is coming out of retirement again to do another movie called "How Do You Live?". He's also already finished doing the storyboarding.
I remember being scared out of my mind when my dad brought home Spirited Away from our local blockbuster when I was a kid. It was the first time that I realized animation could be different from what I’d seen from Disney or Saturday morning cartoons.
I think Joey being in his 20s should definitely watch it again. It´s the perfect film for people of that age. Beaufitul film. The final scene and the score always tears me up.
The Tale of Princess Kagura is probably the best anime movie I've ever watched and will probably remain the number 1 anime movie for me forever. I've never felt so many emotions in a movie, and Kaguya felt one of the most human characters I've ever seen which is ironic since she's a heavenly being from the moon.
I read it this past year and loved it! Super easy read too, it's written for kids so I was able to slam it out in a weekend without having to neglect all my responsibilities haha. There's a sequel too!
There are two sequels - Castle in the Air, and House of Many Ways. Personally, House of Many Ways is my favourite of the three. Diana Wynne Jones is the best!
I personally think that Castle in the Sky is amazing. I'm a sucker for cloud scenes and I think that it has the best ones out of the Ghibli library. I blame it on growing up with Last Exile being one of the few things I remember from my childhood and Storm Hawks being another.
castle in the sky should be SS tier, it was a groundbreaking film for me when i was a kid and the music scores are so bomb. I used to watch it ever saturday evening till the point my parents memorised the dialogue
It's arguably the saddest Studio Ghibli film because it doesn't delve on pity for impact. While When Marie was There might be the most melancholic, Kaguya-hime is definitely the heartbreak film. Fck there are only two Japanese songs that will cause a sudden pain in my heart: the ending song of 5 cm per second and the folk song in Princess Kaguya. 😢
I feel like the wind rises belonged more on A tier. It was a fantastic film. So visually beautiful, and the music was so lovely. It was even nominated for an Oscar, but of course it didn’t win 🥺
Personally, I would put The Wind Rises in the B tier. It is not the saddest Ghibli film, but I did like it, especially with the theme of creating something. The main character, Jiro, is based on a real person, who created planes for WW2. But this quote hit me when Jiro stated, "All I wanted was to create something beautiful".
I would put it in B tier, along with Poppy Hill if it were on the list. For much the same reasons, gorgeous technical detail, great premise, but a story that doesn't really grip you or offer something deeper than surface appearances.
Kaguya is S tier. I personally find howl to be very overrated. In terms of narrative and pacing it was quite rushed, and the thematic elements weren’t presented as strongly as something like mononoke or spirited away but I think it’s the most palatable ghibli film for a casual watch. Porco Rosso is my personal favourite because of its heart and endearing characters so it’s an A for me.
Porco Rosso is wonderful because you don't often get a depiction of how adults intimately relate to one another. It's so rare to have characters with the depth and maturity of Marco and Gina in anime.
Howl's moving castle was also a very confusing narrative to me. Probably why I don't laud it as the best but it is still very good. Kaguya-hime is just fantastic just on visual alone.
That's a hard cap. Howl is the type of movie that on the surface level seems pretty simple, but has some insanely deep plotlines that are tackled very subtly. I suggest reading up on the political aspects that the movie is highlighting and give it another watch. I highly suggest BREADSWORD's video on it.
You took the words out of my mouth when it came to Princess Mononoke. It’s still to this day my ultimate favorite movie with the exact reasons you gave from a dark story to the music etc.!
- Big love for "Pom Poko" in S 🎉 - Wholeheartedly appreciate "Whispers of the Heart" in A. Poignantly relatable 😻 - I am gutted that you do not remember "Only Yesterday". Such a beautiful film 💙 - Joey! I am thoroughly devastated you have not yet appreciated "From Up on Poppy Hill" 🥺
For the ones that he didn't review: The Wind Rises: S -- again, great animation, story is incredible, love story was captivating, a great war story. Top 5 Ghibli film. From Up On Poppy Hill: S -- My favorite Ghibli film, resonated emotionally with the girl whose dad died, love the idea of the kids being the ones guarding history, animation is delightful My Neighbors The Yamadas: D -- funny little vignettes but I couldn't sit still given how it was just a collection of vignettes. Would have been better as a series of anime shorts for TV. Only Yesterday: F -- dub VAs were solid, animation was strangely weird and not a whole lot really happens. Hard to relate to. Tales of Earthsea: F -- bland, not very Ghibli-esque, might have been C-tier if any other studio was making it. He skipped Earwig and the Witch from 2020 I noticed. It's an F-tier so not worth seeing.
Tales of Earthsea deserves at least an A tier. it might not be as "Ghibli esque" as Arietty or Kiki's delivery service, but it's an amazing movie, i don't understand the hate around it at all
My favorite Ghibli film is The cat returns, but I think that Finnish name is better than the English one which in English is Kingdom of cats and Finnish dub of the movie is really nostalgic for me.
It's a more playful and less serious version of the misadventures of the female protagonist on a fantasy world led by a magical hero guy, yes I'm talking about Howl. It's a cat version of Howl's Moving Castle, and I love it 😁🐱🐈
Porco Rosso might be simple, but overall i consider it to be one of the best films in the studio. While Castle In The Sky or Kiki's Delivery Service may be better examples of the average Ghibli experience (so still very good), Porco Rosso has always felt like a fever dream of a movie. An accomplished masterpiece with themes that cross the barrier between reality and fantasy and an overall execution of a story that couldn't have been done better in my opinion. S tier for me.
I’m must say this, I was literally cheering when you put “when marnie was there” in S tier, that movie was so dang good and I felt betrayed by society when I only discovered it’s existence through a chance encounter with it on a shelf at Books A Million. It deserves so much more recognition than it gets and your description of it was absolutely spot on. Now, Joey I have one complaint, and I realize nobody cares about my opinion here but imma just lay it out anyway because when you called Ponyo the “my neighbor Totoro to the generation after me”. I genuinely got a little triggered. I’m not gonna praise the movie to the skies or anything like that, but that film if anything on the same level of both storytelling and visuals as Totoro, if not better. When you simplify that movie down to just Totoro 2.0 you’re essentially ignoring all the improvements it made, the two movies may have similar themes but they’re drastically different in terms of the plot itself. Totoro is a coming of age story about the curious encounters two sisters have with a forest spirit over months of their lives. Ponyo is a love story (not necessarily romantic love), between a boy and a curious little spirit, and it contains a childish sense of expropriation and adventure. It’s unfair to simply sum up the movie that way, without considering the movie as its own unit, and I could accept if you thought Totoro was better if you actually cited reasons why, even if I didn’t agree. Anyway this isn’t hate on you or anything Joey, I still love you and your content and you’re def a cool dude, keep doing what you’re doing!
Ponyo is top tier for me. I didn't grow up watching studio Ghibli unfortunately, so all the films I watched in my late teens/ early adulthood. And to me Ponyo was definitely better than Totoro. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy Totoro, I really liked it a lot.
@@justSunny7 same i grew up watching ponyo since i wasn’t born when the old classics came out. i also watched totoro and i do think ponyo deserves a higher tier than totoro. totoro is definitely special since it’s the mascot but in terms of the movie it’s not the best
Yeah, plus Ponyo is probably one of the most gorgeous movies in the whole list! It's simple and sweet, but that doesn't mean it is basic and unimportant! Same with Porco Rosso. I feel like he placed it lower because the story was more grounded/simpler. Not every good movie has to have big implications!
Overall a very solid list, but for nostalgia reasons I would have personally put "The Cat returns" at B or A. When I was eight or nine I remember flicking through the channels on TV and found the film playing, I managed to see the last half hour or so. I was sort of confused because it was the first time I saw any "anime" tropes, but overall enjoyed what I saw. Ten years later the memory randomly popped into my head. I didn't even remember what the film was called so I searched the internet for it and found the title of the movie. Watching it ten years later made me feel like a kid again, no other movie has done that for me.
Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, The Secret World of Arrietty, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Spirited Away are arguably the best “for kids” Ghibli Films, but I HIGHLY recommend The Cat Returns to any true Ghibli or Disney fan.
Pompoko is an absolute awesome film that gets overshadowed by Ghibli's other works, such a shame. Regardless, Joey being a huge fan of the film makes me smile.:)
I liked the message of the movie and the animation is classic, the story itself is pretty good too! However, I cannot watch it seriously, and I wouldn't watch it again.
I was also one of the kids who didn't really enjoy Pompoko because I didn't really understand it. I rewatched it a few months ago and man... it had me crying at some points because of the hard hitting concepts. Definitely recommend!
Personally, I didn’t love Kiki’s or Pom Poko to the degree that you did but it’s been a while since I’ve seen them, like 4 years, so maybe they deserve a rewatch. Porco Rosso, is an S tier for me since it’s my favorite of all the films but that’s just bias and I would more realistically put it in a B tier or low A tier. I’m glad Whisper of the Heart got some love because I thoroughly enjoy it every time I watch it. With Nausicca, I remember being a little kid watching this movie and seeing the ohmu scene where they lift her up and heal her at the end and that scene literally like changed my life in that moment, I was so moved and inspired as a little 5 or 6 year old but then I never saw it again and had no idea what the movie was called since it was on adult swim. The same happened to me with princess Mononoke, I found these beautiful movies that were awesome and inspiring but I didn’t know what they were called or what they were. I simply enjoyed them for what they were and I didn’t need outside context or a title or anything, just the experience. 10 or so years later I finally found anime and started watching it, bought a studio ghibili box set randomly and when I saw an image of Nausicaa I realized these were the movies missing from my childhood that I could never find, it was honestly one of the greatest moments of my life to find them again and get to watch them as adults. Side note: this same experience happened with the scene in Akira where they rip that girls shirt off and hit her, that scene scarred me as a young kid because I thought it was so horrible what they did to her. 10 years later decided to watch Akira because of all the great things I heard about it and turns out that’s where the scene was from lmao so many great anime films I saw as a kid but didn’t realize it
i definitely recommend watching omoide poroporo (eng title only yesterday) now, in the stage of your life when you are able to reminisce about your childhood :D this movie made me cry a few times, i'm not joking, the sheer nostalgia and love for the countryside landscapes is what hits you the hardest
My favorite is Nausicaa, especially after reading the manga and learning the story behind its production. As a new studio, Miyazaki couldn't get the backing to make the movie, so he wrote and drew the manga to inspire faith in his vision.
I'm so glad to see Joey give Pom Poko the appreciation it deserves. It portrays such important themes and it is a movie I still think about a lot. There is a lot of symbolism and social commentary that is conveyed in a really creative way.
I think Up on Poppy Hill and Castle In the Sky are my two S tiers. Castle in the Sky is definitely the fantasy adventure you come to expect from hearing the name Studio Ghibli and I love the intense animation even it if was from like 1987. Poppy Hill is a great down to earth romance story over a normal movie plot and I really enjoyed how the romance fluctuates throughout the movie with the school life, family, and mini adventure plot points while there's still a lot of deep emotion (keeping it vague and spoiler free). If I remember correctly it didn't have any weird additions or points that didn't need to be there either like Whisper of the Heart (like the addition of Country Roads like 5 times and that other guy who likes the girl but then he just disappears like nothing?) so i'd at least rank it higher than that. I also liked Ocean Waves but I understand if people didn't like it.
I agree with Castle in the sky, but From up on Poppy is definitely low on the list imo :/ I really liked it for the first half or so of the movie, but those soap opera-ish plot twists killed it for me. Could just be my preference though
I'm inclined to disagree with what you are saying about whisper of the heart. First of all if you watch the whole movie and not skip the credits you'll see that the other guy does end up with harada or whatever the protaganists friend was called. I don't think having country roads played alot ruined it. It added to her character and her talent.
I watched Ponyo (First Ghibli movie I ever saw btw), Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro as a kid and fucking loved them, those are some of my favourite movies and they helped me get into anime from a young age
i'm so happy this vid gave light to my absolute fave ghibli film pom poko, however it's not my fave cuz of the message (tho the message is still good), it's my fave cuz i found it really fun to see how the tanukis used their shapeshifting abilities to scare everyone off the mountain
I watched Laputa at my local Japanese Foundation library video booth during junior high school. I did not understood any japanese and the video wasn't subtitled and yet I understood the story and was floored at how good it was. I can still remember the goosebumps I got watching the scene when Pazu played his trumpet to welcome the morning at his valley.
Are you going to do a tier list of Mamoru Hosoda's filmography? You HAVE to include the Digimon movie (especially the short he created as the pilot). I'd love to also hear your thoughts on his latest film, "Belle" or "The Dragon and the Freckled Princess". Thanks, Joey!
I would love to see an update after you see the remaining movies. Personally I would add Porco Rosso as an S tier, just because it's my favorite ghibli movie, and even though I enjoyed Marnie, I would rate it an A tier, same with Kiki's delivery service. (don't get me wrong, I love both of those movies too.)
nausicaa is the movie that shaped my childhood, and if you really enjoy the story, there is also the original manga which is just as stunning and captivating! it is so criminally underrated, so glad to see you give her the love she deserves for being the mother of ghibli. also, you forgot mary and the witch's flower! it was an okay film, definitely had a cool world and cool potential, but was definitely underrated and just didn't have that same ghibli spark that the older movies have.
mary and the witch's flower is not made by ghibli. i can totally see why you mistook as one though, since it was directed by hiromasa yonebayashi and the art is pretty ghibli-eque.
I loved "Ocean Waves" soooooo much! If you want to feel nostalgic about late 80s/early 90s Japan, want an instant summer feeling and a sad romance, please give it a try!
Just my 2-cents. I watched Kiki's delivery service for the first time at the age of 36 and its a great movie. Had my 10 year old watch it with me too and he loved it. So it holds up big time as just a fantastic movie 🍿
The fact that you put when marnie was there in the S tierrr OMG FINALLYY SOMEONE WITH TASTEE I never understood the hate it recieved like it so beautiful in so many ways and the watching experience every time is mind blowing the small details and art is so prettyyy
Coming from someone who has watched grave of the fireflies multiple times you'd be surprised how many different lessons you can learn every time you rewatch it. Imo a true masterpiece
Thank you for Pom Poko S tier!! One of my most favourite films of all time. Only Testerday I recomment a rewatch as it really looks into nostalgia of childhood.
It's crazy how Ghibli scenes were playing in my head as you were running through the films. That's how captivating and memorable these films were. Also The Wind Rises was pure visual poetry and yes, I cried.
Yeah, I wasn't planning on ugly crying the day I watched it... that was a mistake "Your Lie in April" was probably the last time I screamed and cried at the TV that loud
Castle in the Sky/kikki/and spirited away are some of my favorite movies period! It never stops amazing me how many of their movies look like they haven’t aged a day. ❤️ Thanks for sharing your tier list it’s not always essay to pick.
I think Ocean Waves is the most underrated Studio Ghibli film. Every single other film they've made as received its due, but this made for tv film is NEVER talked about, and it's good.
Ocean waves is a flop. It's ending was extremely horrible, made no sense why the protagonist remembered all the bad memories and liked the problematic, manipulative girl for no reason. It was all pointless.
Only Yesterday really should be watched as an adult in one's twenties, especially late twenties. It's about a protagonist at that age going out to the countryside to get another view at life and reminiscing about their childhood the whole time. It's about growing up, nostalgia, reflecting and learning on things you did not pick up as a child, and how adulthood can be grating and boring. I do love it.
@@stuntmonkey00 Ngl I'm not Asian but I did still experience the bittersweet flavor of it but that's some of my favorite type of media experience so it contributes to why I'm so fond of it.
Bro, The Wind Rises DESTROYED me.It's my 2nd favorite ghibli movie (after Mononoke). I watched it once and i never will again cause my heart cant take it.
poppy hill is in no way my favourite ghibli movie, but it’s the one I can rewatch at any time. something about it is just so intimate and cozy. it’s like slice of life, done by ghibli :] also, the soundtrack is fantastic. upbeat, yet incredibly nostalgic - almost ethereal at the end. I listen to sayonara no natsu all the time
Disagree about Porco Rosso as it does different things from other Miyazaki movies by being a between wars movie. It feels more personal and a bit less preachy as well
It's not just airplanes with Miyazaki... when you watch The Wind Rises, just watch the sheer numbers of modes of transportation that the Ghibli artists lovingly craft in some of those sequences. It takes Miyazaki's love of all things mechanical up to 11.
@@ricardosoares4655 I don't get why you think so. It's pretty accurate to the experiences of a lot of children. WW2 was not a good time for citizens of any country directly involved, and much of what went into that film was inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's early life and things he witnessed as a child. If you ever check out any videos that basically study it thematically, I think you would appreciate it more
@@Victoria-dh9vb im not saying it is inaccurate. what i think is that the characters dont make any sense. a kid that loves his sister to death couldnt put his pride aside because of petty reasons. i dont like how they thought that would work out, but i guess it did since everyone thinks it is one of the saddest anime movies
I get it why the brother was like that because what happened to him and his li'l sis that led him to believe on not trusting adults. But it really feels apologetic. There's another ww2 movie In this corner and other corners of the world that seems to be a lighter version but it felt more sincere on portraying ordinary people getting by in Japan during the war decades ago.
I have watched all those that you have watched plus The Wind Rises also. I think my list will basically same as yours, and put The Wind Rises at B Tier for me. Really love all the S Tier you have pick, Princess Mononoke one of my favorite too, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is my favorite too, is hard to choose between them.
While I'd rank "Grave of the Fireflies" and "Princess Mononoke" as the best films from a critical side. My secret favorite is "Whisper of the Heart." As a young creative child trying to figure out my own dreams in life... It hit me at the right place and right time. I connected with the characters and the struggle. And, the "Country Road" scene is my favorite single scene in all of animation, it just so human and beautiful! But, I realize that my love for it comes from who I was when I watched it for the first time. And, not everyone is going to have that same raw emotional connection with the film. That's the problem with a tier list like this. Someone's favorite Ghibli film could be Pom Poko, or Ocean Waves. Those films may have spoken to them and their personal experiences. And all of those feelings are valid. It's really a testament to the studio's breadth of work that nearly every film they put out can be someone's favorite.
Seeing the thumbnail, I was really looking forward to Joey roasting Tales of Earthsea, because I remember feeling so confused at how underwhelming it was, like, "WTF I thought this was Studio Ghibli, why is this so BLEGH, what am I missing?!"
In my personal opinion Howl's Moving Castle is S+++ tier by far my favorite Studio Ghibli movie and my most watched movie of all time. Everyone is entitled to their opinion though and I'm just glad you didnt put it lower than A tier XD
For everyone asking for the English titles:
S Tier: Princess Mononoke, Kiki's delivery service, Pom Poko, When Marnie was here, Spirited Away, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
A Tier: Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Whisper of the Heart, My Neighbor Totoro, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
B Tier: Grave of the Fireflies, Arrietty, Ponyo
C Tier: Porco Rosso, The Cat Returns
D Tier: Ocean Waves
F Tier: The Strange Case of Dr Jelly and Mr Joey

thanks bro!
Uhm, that Dr Jelly rating is clearly wrong... It should be above S tier!
@@suisui7481 Up on poppy hill, how the wind rises, tales from earthsea, only Yesterday, My neighbors the yamadas
Personally it is my favourite Ghibli film
SPOILERS:
The little sister's death was a consequence of the older brother immature actions.

Princess Mononoke should have a tier of it's own. It's just too good
personally I think it's the best from miyazaki. it's like a refined version of nausicaa
I would agree if the movie held true to the title, we see more of Ashitaka than San who is Princess Mononoke.
@@nemoatlantis7148 Princess Nausicaa is too pure and I love her. But she's too pure. Even if both has conflict, Princess Mononoke's feels more compelling but it has more or less the same theme of struggle between nature and technology and the want or need of coexistence.

The wind rises is probably the most underrated ghibli film. People either haven't seen it or just don't talk about it, but I think it is top tier, like probably within the best 3 ghibli films
Agree!
Right?? I LOVE that movie. Wind Rises is my second most rewatched Ghibli film.
Dang.
The scene where he smokes beside his wife who has tuberculosis put me off a lot tho
100% agree
I didn't realize what Grave of the Fireflies was about, and decided to watch it as part of a Ghibli marathon. This marathon was done since I was lonely on my first Christmas alone.
It was not a good time.
You should have ought to watch Tokyo Grandfathers(I know its not Ghibli) instead of watching that for Christmas.
You'll feel more like Jesus died rather than Jesus being born on that day if you watch Graveyard of the Fireflies in that day.
oh, you poor soul
@@Snzn_7 Tokyo Godfathers was so good!
I made the same mistake by watching it alone ;w;
@@RebelNinja89 oof.
Yayyy glad Nausicaa is there, it definitely deserves an S-tier and the themes are still relevant. It is unbelievable that the movie is 37 years old
I had fun watching it, but from all the Ghibli movies I had watch.
Yay for sweet cheesy teen romcoms 😁👍👍
Coming from a former (with full regret) fan of Western film romcoms but disillusioned after I realized how bullshit it was but mostly because of 500 days of summer, From Up on Poppy Hill was a fresh take and a nice breather of a budding romance between two teens from previous generations and their struggles back then.
A for me as well. And Michael Keaton is pretty damn great.
@@Zexser That scene is really gorgeously animated.

Yooo same here
Yes! Even for pure re-watchability I rate it S tier. Who can forget Howl covered in slime being dragged up the stairs?
We need more love for when marnie was there, no enough people have seen that masterpiece.
Such a beautiful movie!
I felt like it's decent, but not exactly a masterpiece. Because there's quite a number of scenes that are far too dragged out.
I put it in the C-tier myself. It's neat for sure and I like the little twist, but as far as Ghibli films go it's kind of middle of the pack.
Edit: Fun fact: if you ever wondered where the lofi girl aesthetic originated from, it's from this movie
yeah i really didn't get why joey said that ! does anybody know why it was received so poorly ?
I believe it was poorly received in the west due to it being different to other ghibli films in the sense it was mostly a romance and lacked the fantasy themes present in most ghibli films. Even if the film had initial backlash, I hope anime fans were able to look past the difference and enjoy it for what it is, a great movie! I personally really enjoyed it
Perhaps because of the english dub. It made the characters a wee bit mean spirited rather than what was originally portrayed in the Japanese version.
Agreed! Only Yesterday is a film for adults because it’s just so… relatable.
I think it found me at the right age and it touched me so much 😭
you absolutely need to rewatch only yesterday,,, i didn’t love it as much the first time but oh my god it’s one of my favourites and i think the ACTUAL most underrated ghibli film
(it’s definitely more geared toward adults than kids)
Absolutely. Only Yesterday is so underrated.
If I can compare ghibli to zelda games, Joey saying that pom poko is the most underrated is like people saying that spirit tracks is the most underrated, when in reality most people straight up forget the only yesterday even exists, just like most people forget about minish cap.
I agree. I think it is the most underrated ghibli movie!
Out of all the Studio Ghibli films, this gave me the most butterflies in my stomach feeling ☺️
Made me blush like a fool for minutes damn. But aside from the subtle hint of urbanisation message, it's a very great film of coming to terms of your inner child and your present self.
Feel like I'm alone in saying Arriety is my favourite Ghibli film, I think the majority of it's elements are done better in other Ghibli films. But for whatever reason, it really resonates with me
It's in my top 3 rn, and I've seen most Ghiblis ❤
I love arriety too!
I had a hard time liking it because I was a huge fan on the 1997 movie “The Borrows” which does the same concept but better imo.
I found all the characters in the movie to be so incredibly lovely. Such a beautiful story
Probably one of the darkest ghibli films ever made
@@cas9007 More so than Grave Of The Fireflies?
I found it quite nice as well. While the movie kinda combines a real life figure with one of a book, the real life figure is actually quite interesting being someone who loved his craft yet would also not shy away from expressing his distaste for the war despite his craft essentially supporting it. The romance side of things is moreso based on the book iirc, but even that was quite interesting
I'd put it in the same camp as Grave of Fireflies, just not as tragic sad, as in a movie that's good to watch once but doesn't really have much rewatchability
And Miyazaki got Hideaki Anno to voice the MC!
"From Up on Poppy Hill" and "Ocean Waves" are my favorites since I'm a sucker for grounded high school romance.

oxean waves is my least favourite ghibli film but it easnt bad
@@tama5380 out of all, its the least Ghibli-esque movie thematically so I get why a lot of people don't like it
Ocean Waves is right up there for me too. Criminally underrated imo.
The soundtrack in nausicä of the valley of the wind still to this day gives me goosebumps everytime i hear it
The Daoko rendition of it is real good though.

It was even nominated for an Oscar, but of course it didn’t win 🥺
they would never give an oscar to a movie related to the Zero airplane origins lol but I agree, movie is nothing short of amazing
Pom poko is truly underrated and so happy Joey gives it the recognition that it deserves
Aside from the tanukis using their junk to fight people, and the excessive narration from Maurice LaMarche,
I actually enjoyed Pom Poko.
I think I'd put it either low A or high B. It's a great movie to watch once, but I don't think it has much rewatchability
I would put it in B tier, along with Poppy Hill if it were on the list. For much the same reasons, gorgeous technical detail, great premise, but a story that doesn't really grip you or offer something deeper than surface appearances.
It's a real tragedy of a sincere craftsman 😢
Kaguya is S tier. I personally find howl to be very overrated. In terms of narrative and pacing it was quite rushed, and the thematic elements weren’t presented as strongly as something like mononoke or spirited away but I think it’s the most palatable ghibli film for a casual watch. Porco Rosso is my personal favourite because of its heart and endearing characters so it’s an A for me.
Porco Rosso is wonderful because you don't often get a depiction of how adults intimately relate to one another. It's so rare to have characters with the depth and maturity of Marco and Gina in anime.
same thoughts with Porco Rosso honestly
Kaguya is easily one of the best and most moving movies I have ever watched

My personal favorite Ghibli film is Howl's Moving Castle. I especially love the characters and the music from it. :)
For the ones that he didn't review:
The Wind Rises: S -- again, great animation, story is incredible, love story was captivating, a great war story. Top 5 Ghibli film.
From Up On Poppy Hill: S -- My favorite Ghibli film, resonated emotionally with the girl whose dad died, love the idea of the kids being the ones guarding history, animation is delightful
My Neighbors The Yamadas: D -- funny little vignettes but I couldn't sit still given how it was just a collection of vignettes.
The Wind Rises and From Up on Poppy Hill is S tier for me
Tales of Earthsea deserves at least an A tier. it might not be as "Ghibli esque" as Arietty or Kiki's delivery service, but it's an amazing movie, i don't understand the hate around it at all
We just pretend Earwig and the witch doesn’t exist
My favorite Ghibli film is The cat returns, but I think that Finnish name is better than the English one which in English is Kingdom of cats and Finnish dub of the movie is really nostalgic for me.
It's a more playful and less serious version of the misadventures of the female protagonist on a fantasy world led by a magical hero guy, yes I'm talking about Howl. It's a cat version of Howl's Moving Castle, and I love it 😁🐱🐈
The cat returns is one of my favorite movies Im gonna show it to my friends

Porco Rosso might be simple, but overall i consider it to be one of the best films in the studio. While Castle In The Sky or Kiki's Delivery Service may be better examples of the average Ghibli experience (so still very good), Porco Rosso has always felt like a fever dream of a movie. An accomplished masterpiece with themes that cross the barrier between reality and fantasy and an overall execution of a story that couldn't have been done better in my opinion. S tier for me.
Easily one of their best I don't know what he was smoking
I agree with you. My top ranking would be Spirited Away, Mononoke, Kaguya & Porco Rosso. All very deeply thematical films in my opinion.
Pom poko and Nausicaa are so criminally underrated i swear to god! They're one of my favs🤧
@@justSunny7
same i grew up watching ponyo since i wasn’t born when the old classics came out. i also watched totoro and i do think ponyo deserves a higher tier than totoro. totoro is definitely special since it’s the mascot but in terms of the movie it’s not the best
ponyo definitely makes me feel like a kid again. and plus! miyazaki added his favorite prehistoric fish! and just the entire palette was great
Yeah, plus Ponyo is probably one of the most gorgeous movies in the whole list! It's simple and sweet, but that doesn't mean it is basic and unimportant!
Same with Porco Rosso. I feel like he placed it lower because the story was more grounded/simpler. Not every good movie has to have big implications!
Joey is undeniably keeping Tier Lists relevelant and cool lol also my favorite will always be Princess Mononoke
Nah Tier lists are bigger than ever now
Iam gonna be honest this review was awful.
Never seen only yesterday? you’re missing out on some of the best slice of life content in anime
This!!! Such an underrated movie
Oh my Gosh! Yes!!! Truly the best in the genre 💙
I absolutely loved When Marnie Was There Glad to see you enjoyed it Joey 🙌
You said wind rises was mid but you haven't watched it yet?
Pompoko is an absolute awesome film that gets overshadowed by Ghibli's other works, such a shame. Regardless, Joey being a huge fan of the film makes me smile.:)
I liked the message of the movie and the animation is classic, the story itself is pretty good too! However, I cannot watch it seriously, and I wouldn't watch it again.
I was also one of the kids who didn't really enjoy Pompoko because I didn't really understand it. I rewatched it a few months ago and man... it had me crying at some points because of the hard hitting concepts.
Definitely recommend!
It's because it had the nerve to make me cry that I can only give it an A, not an S and I will probably not watch it again.
Putting Spirited Away in the S tier, I expected nothing less from Joey. 😌
Spirited Away will always be my favourite because it really connects me to my parents and reminds me of when they first showed it to me, nostalgia.
My foolish former self felt bored watching this but then I rewatched it last year 😢
When marnie was there
Made me cry at the end.
I watched it 2 years after my grandmother died and made me miss her so much
Personally, I didn’t love Kiki’s or Pom Poko to the degree that you did but it’s been a while since I’ve seen them, like 4 years, so maybe they deserve a rewatch.
I love you so much for putting "When Marnie was here" on S Tier❤ It suprise me that so many people haven't heard of this masterpiece!
I'm so glad to see Joey give Pom Poko the appreciation it deserves. It portrays such important themes and it is a movie I still think about a lot. There is a lot of symbolism and social commentary that is conveyed in a really creative way.
howl's moving castle shoulda been S tear, the music and animation alone make me cry with how stunning it is
I think Up on Poppy Hill and Castle In the Sky are my two S tiers.
I agree with Castle in the sky, but From up on Poppy is definitely low on the list imo :/
I really liked it for the first half or so of the movie, but those soap opera-ish plot twists killed it for me.
The soundtrack for howl’s moving castle is my favorite. I really dig the whimsical vibe of the film and the voice acting was good in my opinion. 😌😌
i'm so happy this vid gave light to my absolute fave ghibli film pom poko, however it's not my fave cuz of the message (tho the message is still good), it's my fave cuz i found it really fun to see how the tanukis used their shapeshifting abilities to scare everyone off the mountain
I watched Laputa at my local Japanese Foundation library video booth during junior high school. I did not understood any japanese and the video wasn't subtitled and yet I understood the story and was floored at how good it was. I can still remember the goosebumps I got watching the scene when Pazu played his trumpet to welcome the morning at his valley.
this finna be a banger, pre-watched guess, you got howl, grave of the fireflies, mononoke, spirited away and totoro at S
Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are the GOATS of Ghibli
Are you going to do a tier list of Mamoru Hosoda's filmography? You HAVE to include the Digimon movie (especially the short he created as the pilot). I'd love to also hear your thoughts on his latest film, "Belle" or "The Dragon and the Freckled Princess". Thanks, Joey!
dont forget One Piece Movie 6 that one slapt!!
@@EduSaav Yes! Can't forget that one!!!!
I read the manga recently, it became my favorite manga series, it’s so beautiful in both Story and Art-style, It’s truly underrated
I loved "Ocean Waves" soooooo much!
If you want to feel nostalgic about late 80s/early 90s Japan,
want an instant summer feeling and a sad romance, please give it a try!
Joey, the plane Miyazaki got inspiration is a piston engined old ww2, not the jet one.
Its the italian Caproni Ca.309 Ghibli, from WW2.
Finally someone who gave Whisper of the Heart some love. My all time favourite Ghibli film
It gets so underappreciated; it's so good
My 3 favorite ghibli films are: majo no takkyubin, mimi wo sumaseba and heisei tanuki ponpoko, great video!
“That evil man took ponyo away from soske!!!!!” My little brother said that while watching ponyo and it was the most adorable thing ever 😍😍
Kiki's is just so amazing im so glad you S tiered it
I was off-side with your list about half way through, then you went and put Pom Poko S tier :) correct call. Horrendously underrated.
For me S tier is Whisper of the Heart and Spirited Away. Both very special movies in different ways.
A Tier - Howl, Kiki, Ponyo
Coming from someone who has watched grave of the fireflies multiple times you'd be surprised how many different lessons you can learn every time you rewatch it. Imo a true masterpiece
I'm not strong enough to watch it multiple times 😭
Thank you for Pom Poko S tier!! One of my most favourite films of all time.
Only Testerday I recomment a rewatch as it really looks into nostalgia of childhood.
It's crazy how Ghibli scenes were playing in my head as you were running through the films. That's how captivating and memorable these films were. Also The Wind Rises was pure visual poetry and yes, I cried.
Yeah, I wasn't planning on ugly crying the day I watched it... that was a mistake
"Your Lie in April" was probably the last time I screamed and cried at the TV that loud
Same I loved it. Pretty realistic what it’s like to be young and dumb
Yes
Ocean waves is a flop. It's ending was extremely horrible, made no sense why the protagonist remembered all the bad memories and liked the problematic, manipulative girl for no reason. It was all pointless.
Kokuriko-zaka kara and the Wind Rises are two of my favorite Ghibli movies.
If you grew up Asian, Only Yesterday resonates so much that it stings in a really bittersweet kind of a way.
@@stuntmonkey00 Ngl I'm not Asian but I did still experience the bittersweet flavor of it but that's some of my favorite type of media experience so it contributes to why I'm so fond of it.
@@stuntmonkey00 Or if you're a woman, regardless of where you're from. It seems like a lot of men have a hard time resonating with it.
Bro, The Wind Rises DESTROYED me.It's my 2nd favorite ghibli movie (after Mononoke). I watched it once and i never will again cause my heart cant take it.
poppy hill is in no way my favourite ghibli movie, but it’s the one I can rewatch at any time. something about it is just so intimate and cozy. it’s like slice of life, done by ghibli :]
also, the soundtrack is fantastic. upbeat, yet incredibly nostalgic - almost ethereal at the end.
You should do a Makoto Shinkai-movie tier list next. Excited to hear ur opinions on that.
Anyone who doesn’t say Grave of the Fireflies is the saddest film has never seen it. I cried so much
whats sad about it is how someone can use ww2 as the main theme and fail miserably to make a sad movie. grave of the fireflies is so dumb
I can justify why Princess Kaguya is probably the saddest Studio Ghibli film.
My secret favorite is "Whisper of the Heart."
As a young creative child trying to figure out my own dreams in life...
Whisper of the Heart
aka "Why is John Denver in My Anime?"
Love the tier list videos. Doesn't matter how repetitive it gets tbh.
Seeing the thumbnail, I was really looking forward to Joey roasting Tales of Earthsea, because I remember feeling so confused at how underwhelming it was, like, "WTF I thought this was Studio Ghibli, why is this so BLEGH, what am I missing?!"
Ponyo is my favourite, it’s adorable, it’s about childhood love and it’s an urban fantasy! MY FAVOURITE THINGS!
In my personal opinion Howl's Moving Castle is S+++ tier by far my favorite Studio Ghibli movie and my most watched movie of all time. Everyone is entitled to their opinion though and I'm just glad you didnt put it lower than A tier XD
My favorites are Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke.
Porco Rosso was also really fun.
But "As The Wind Rises" was soooooo sad!
Came here for “when marnie was there” s tier
my 3 favorites are in s, s and a, so i say: great taste! (kikis delivery service, when marnie was there, howls moving castle)
