should've been "MANGAMAN"
josh the manga lad is here
Manga and Anime are the same thing. When the anime I'm watching ends, I go find the manga it was based on and continue from there. ;P
Also Saddle Club reference... nice.
Let's be honest.
Saint Seiya is the number one manga/anime and no one can convince us that that's not true.
Cool
GOATED video dawg, you finally showed us your true identity of being The Manga Man. Instead of your persona as the supposedly "The Anime Man"

fucking hate how this is not performing as well. i hate youtube
was about to say the same, could not believe that it has this low of a a view count after three weeks
I was thinking the same thing especially with such a good idea
If you enjoyed it, that's great. Not everyone is interested in all of a UA-camrs videos.
@@XxX__GAMER__XxX yeah i agree but i thought at least the fans of trash taste would want to watch this, at least the viewership on this video is less than what joey gets in his second channel videos
Joey's audience doesn't really care for history lessons. He's built an audience more in tune with internet culture. He should stick to the gimmick videos about prostitutes, twitch and eating foreign foods.
Most people who would be interested in the history of manga would be pretty quickly turned off by his zoomer humour.
Best thing you ever made IMHO, absolutely topped yourself(and many others) mate!!
Clearly I'll watch an hour long video on the history of manga instead of finishing my half-watched animes 🤝🏼 True manga man follower
HE'S FINALLY MAKING MANGA CONTENT
No way. Joey actually making a video about manga and anime? The apocalypse is coming isn’t it
So the first manga genre is essentially Slice of Life
Those nowadays newbies only shonen manga readers but hating on slice of life are clowns now
Sasae chan is now goated
Not wrong though😂
Yess
And since it's anthropomorphic animals, we could say it also counts as Furry/Kemono, so yeah :P
22:15 Correction: Disney did not rip off Kimba; it's a very common myth. YMS has made a fantastic video about this topic. Great video, though!
thank you, i was so disappointed to learn that joey weren't familiar with it. Even funnier because Joey probably didn't even watch Kimba in its entirety considering the alleged rip off comparison use multiple footage from different Kimba series, even ones that came after Lion King to make their case.
heavily inspired and production staff were under the assumption that they were remaking Kimba, so... fair use and transformative?
@@StonerWeebThere's no evidence that the creators thought they were remaking Kimba. If you look into this topic it's clear they're not related in any way. But I really don't blame you for thinking that since it's a very common misconception. Highly recommend YMS's Kimba video if you are interested!
Yea that segment was pretty annoying to see, when he gets the only topic I am familiar with incorrect, it undermines the other stuff he is saying.
Could you tell me what region and what era this myth is from?
I wrote my bachelor and master works about manga history, the eromanga industry and social isolation. Can't wait to watch this video!
Anything published we could look at or read? This sounds fascinating!!
I gotta go watch Sazae-san! This was a great video
@@KittRembo I wish you could read it, but both works are fully written in polish language
Actually curious what makes them such deviants
@@shantiboomj i wouldnt call them deviants, but such behavioral alterations happen due to multiple factors; mental disorders, character predispositions, difficult family situations, bullying and overall abuse, etc..
Social isolation often plays a significant role in turning people into readers. For instance, I began reading when I started middle school. Without many connections there, I found solace in books like PJO and other genres.
THIS WAS SO SO WELL MADE ABSOLUTELY SLAYED !!
I was actually impressed with that ad read

I saw that Dengeki Daisy panel in your background Joe! 29:56
So happy to see it included, even if not mentioned verbally. Can’t tell you how excited I was to see it. It is my favorite shojo that still doesn’t have an anime. I laughed out loud at that scene behind you. Just wanted to say thanks for showing it. It doesn’t get much attention that I see anyway. Thanks again Joe 🎉❤
the feeling of hunting down anime in your favorite comic shops, video stores, and comic conventions in the 90s was unlike any other. such magical times.
And praying the manga was in English. I kept almost buying Japanese Naruto manga
Thank you for not forgetting shojo! So many videos like this just skip over shojo’s importance in the manga/anime industry and I loved hearing a little of it mentioned!
Overall loved this video!
I absolutely love this type of videos. A longer essay that's a good pause from endless social media scrolling

Joey the editing and the style and even the corny humor in this video is so peak! I love how you just baited me into watching an education video about manga and made it so much fun that not once did I break away my attention! Please do more of these high quality and lengthy videos, they’re so much fun
I was hoping for a mention of Lupin the 3rd..
For a 57 year old franchise (and still ongoing mind you) Lupin was the series that revolutionized the seinen genre as a whole - both for manga and anime.
I guess for the sake of brevity he chose Golgo 13 from that period since it's still going on. He could've delved deeper about the gekiga movement both Lupin and Golgo stemmed from though. I recommend the autobiographical manga "A drifting life" from Yoshihiro Tatsumi, one of the important creators from that time, it's only 2 volumes long but covers a lot of events, mangaka and their works.
Manga just has such an incredibly fascinating and long history! My life has never been the same since discovering this beautiful and powerful art form which has just some of my favorite stories ever told not just in the medium but just plain in general! Kudos to you Joey for providing an excellent summary of its history so far! :)
This was such a fascinating watch, I would love to hear more manga/anime history explained from you!
This is really great stuff Joey, maybe my favourite video you've made.
I watched this video backwards and reincarnated into an Edo period artisan.
I'd be tempted to take that life.
"Another motherf*cking isekai!"
-Joey
Is this an Isekai he forgot to mention?
MF got isekai'd as Hokusai/Sei Shoganon
Isekai ahh title
I finally got to a point where I was satisfied with the anime/manga I've read and started actually watching the seasonal anime that comes out. But now you reminded me of all the old manga I've forgotten I wanted to read and introduced titles I've never heard about, thank you for that. Great video, I definitely enjoy this format.
joey absolutely fucking cooked with this vid ngl
Genuinely sad that no one is watching this
I am watching, worry not

You are right though It is still A LOT of people
More than just Disney films (which did play their part) one of Tezuka's biggest earlier inspirations was the Donald Duck comics by Carl Barks. Barks' influence in the comics sphere (both in American comics and manga) is one that's unfortunately still understated. Elements like Tezuka's character design, his experimentation with panel layout, and the masking effect (the mix of characters drawn in a more cartoony style with background and objects drawn in a realistic style that is so very common in manga today) are elements he pulled from these duck comics and made his own. (So, yes, anime eyes are a byproduct of Donald Duck). Obviously Tezuka was still a massively important and influential genius in the world of comics in his own right (I'm a big fan of the masterpiece that is Astro Boy), but when covering the history of manga I think it's important to bring up Barks's work and influence (especially since you claimed some elements of the manga style were absent in western comics when they originated in duck comics).
Betty boop as well had very large eyes
He did not just say that id he?
The famous big manga/anime eyes were taken straight from Bambi.
Also Shin Takarajima was basically plagiarized from Mickey Mouse Phantom Blot.
Manga in the way we think about it literally came from Euro American comics. The Japanese received publications from America in the late 1800s-1900s. The idea of audio visual media, like comics, didn’t exist prior. There were stories with narration like fairy tales, but the concept of character to character dialogue in sequential storytelling came from Euro American comics. It accompanied the invention of the phonograph. We take for granted that people understand the concept of speech bubbles by default. Originally they did not, as this concept was invited by Euro American comics. These comics were imported to Japan and some were called “American Manga”. “Manga” originally didn’t mean specifically comics. It roughly translated to mean “sketch”.
Westerners have a very narrow view of manga and its origin. However, there is a reason that speech bubbles and sequential storytelling translated from one culture to another. It’s not because Americans and Japanese had the same idea but just happened to be in different places when they had them. No, the Japanese wanted to “modernize” and adapted a lot of Euro American culture to include language, dress and media (comics).
This thought and connection to ancient scrolls is not accurate as they don’t reflect what modern manga looks like. The bridge is the import of Euro American comics which set the format for what we know today as manga. These comics include Donald Duck by Carl Barks, yes. However, there were others like “Bringing Up Father” that was popular and predates Donald Duck. Tezuka was influenced by this comic as were other artists before him.
Americans try to understand but overlook a lot, perhaps the most important transitions. You can fact check my comment. It may open your eyes to the subject.
Tezuka had a combined influence from Disney, Superman, Popeye, and Mighty Mouse amongst others.
Astro Boy is called “Mighty Atom” in the original Japanese to English translation. “Astro Boy” was used because it sounded better at the time in English translations due to the bombings in Japan. “MIGHTY Atom” took inspiration from “MIGHTY Mouse”. Notice the name similarity, the red boots and posing while flying.
Tezuka was inspired by Popeye and Disney, having a bizarre looking Mickey and Popeye appearing in some of his early manga.
What strikes me is how no one mentions “Bringing Up Father” which was a comic that was popular globally. Sazae-San and Tezuka’s work, especially early took influence from Bringing Up Father. You can look at the character designs in them and see the influence clear as day. Especially the use of the rounded circle noses, the style of formal dress of the characters and the humor. Take a look at it and see for yourself the comparisons. It’s rather interesting.
@@RodneyKing-kz3ym just looked at “Bringing Up Father” and it’s clear as day “Sazae-San” took major inspiration from it, the similarities are uncanny.
This video was AMAZING !
Thank you for sharing it
Okay, I was scared you were going to skip over all the early history based on the thumbnail, but you covered it quite in depth given the (relatively) short length of this video. Great job Joey. :)
YMS made a 3 hour video proving The Lion King did not rip off Kimba the White Lion and that everyone saying it did has not actually watched Kimba and is only saying it because everyone else is saying it. In fact, most of the panels and clips used by people to try and say it's true come from Kimba media that come out AFTER The Lion King, which would mean it's the other way around, if anything.
Loved this new style of retrospective video. I think it'd be awesome if you made similar videos like this that can go more in depth into certain topics like a single series or mangaka.
Great video! While I did know most of it already, this video certainly helped putting some of the early pieces together. Would love to see more content like this, maybe even more in depth analyses of specific genres, like what titles and writers inspired a currently succesful series?
Every manga fan should visit the Manga Museum in Kyoto. Not even so much for the museum itself (dare I say Joey told the history of manga here in more detail?) but more so as a huge library with thousands upon thousands of manga. Even if you can't read Japanese (I can't), just browsing the endless shelves and flipping through random manga gives you so much more appreciation of the incredible variety of this medium. And well, they do have a section with foreign languages, but certainly limit yourself to those.
And while in Kyoto, it's not that far to Takarazuka for the Tezuka Osamu Museum...
The Manga Man RETURNED!!
P.S. Apparently, the reason manga is darker than cartoons is due to the mindset of the Japanese post-WWII and their increased awareness of death and life.
Additionally, many early manga and anime had Western settings to divert the world's attention from Japan's war crimes while trying to create a better image in people's minds.
I'm Japanese, but I think this opinion is different. First of all, before World War II, even before manga became popular, many Japanese stories were dark. I think this is due to the nature of Japan, which has continued for hundreds of years. Also, the westernization of Japanese manga has no such intention at all. In the first place, at that time, we didn't think that our manga would sell all over the world. If you were to force it, you could say that they were trying to trick each other into feeling guilty, but that's not the case either. The first generation of postwar writers (Osamu Tezuka, Hayao Miyazaki) expressed their opinions about the war in many works.
This is a Google translation, so I'm sorry if it's hard to read.
@user-tn9ln7dd6x First I am sorry if I offended you by mistake, I will try to speak objectively and clearly,
What anime covered was Japan's perspective in the war, citizens mostly, at least thats what I have seen, but it didn't cover any of the war crimes done in china, phillipines, korea obviously, which is what I'm talking about here
In 1990s japan had an economic crisis, so it used western settings in anime and adapted western books into anime, in order to gain attention world wide, and it worked well, as well as intentionally or unintentionally it diverted people's attention from Japan's past war crimes
I might be completely wrong, if I turn to be wrong I am sorry, but I think its a plausible theory
Thank you for your reply!
It is clearly understood that the "war crime" is Japan's colonization of Asia. And it's true that anime doesn't pay attention to its own country's war crimes when it covers politics and war, and I also think that's a problem.
However, your idea that the direction of genre and content is changing in order to "turn away from foreign eyes" is clearly wrong. I think this is too much of a consideration from a Western perspective. The history of Japanese manga and anime is simply that each artist created a mountain of works, both bright and dark, that slowly gained fans around the world. . I can safely say that there is no perspective on how Japan should be shown to foreign countries (until ten years ago, most people had no idea that their work was being seen overseas). Therefore, I think that what you read from watching Japanese anime and manga is nothing more than an unconscious reflection of the general Japanese political views, and there is no need to go out of your way to make a theory out of it.
Sorry it's so long!
hard disagree, it's not just Japan, a lot of children's work from Europe like Moomins, Peter Pan and so many fairy tales are mature and occasionally darker than what we think of as appropriate for kids... basically, I don't think Japan is different, I think it's just America/Britain that are uniquely pearl-clutching (it's the puritanical influence IMO), children's fiction isn't darker in Japan, it's lighter and more vapid in the US
or maybe, it's white and black.
keep making content like this, its great!
The quality of this video is insane! Good work Joey
This feels so much like the internet pitstop ,which is a compliment because he imo has one of the best videos regarding anime culture .
Wow ok this came out of nowhere
this video is really interesting and honestly i prefer it to the rest of your content. hopefully it gets some more views so that you consider doing more stuff like this
Josh The Manga lad finally talks about Manga
There are plenty of interesting and historically important topics that you overlooked in this, like pre-WWII manga like Norakuro and lots of others (which influenced Tezuka to be the way he was), or mentioning how groundbreaking Ishinomori Shotaro, Mizuno Hideko and Yokoyama Mitsuteru (despite Tetsujin 28-gou being mentioned) were to manga. The gekiga movement and the Garo magazine, the origins of battle shounen manga in things like Astro Boy, Ashita no Joe, Astro Kyuudan and Ring ni Kakero before Hokuto no Ken... but overall, that's a nice video to introduce people to the general landscape of the history of manga, and it was pretty fun to watch as usual.
I'd love to see more in-depth videos on manga here

My man Joey has learned from Garnt, this video in my opinion is a better format than your previous review videos. Keep it up!

Aye this is dope Joey
Such a beautiful video. Manga and anime has such a huge impact on my life and art journey over the years. And I’ve also gotten into making comics/manga of my own and with friends! I’m still learning, it’s rough, and going to make mistakes, but I love every second of it. And the books on my shelves are being filled with more manga than anything els. That’s why my Unico pfp means so much to me. It hit hard at a time in my life where it truly comforted me. As an artist it’s truly inspiring and I hope to make stories and characters that others can love and appreciate as well💖
YMS did a good video about the kimba/simba comparisons
I'm glad someone else said this.
The fact that this vid hasn't reached a 100k views makes me angry, this video is sooo good
Joey should know the Kimba controversy is hyper-exaggerated with many false claims. People just didn't do their research or they just wanted easy views..
YMS already made an extensive analysis why this happened and the truth is not actually that controversial and it's actually even weirder, cause the famoulsy compared shots are actually copied by Kimba not Disney.
I also want to state that I said this for the truth, not to defend Disney
Not to mention, the storylines between Kimba and The Lion King were very different at its core. The Lion King was their take on the tale of Hamlet. But, I guess that doesn’t matter in the eyes of many.
I'm glad others are bringing this up as well.
was gonna bring this up, go way up there pls
I know he isn't gonna respond to this or correct it in his video, but I appreciate you trying to put the truth up there.

Okay, this just convinces me you never actually read a single volume or watched a single episode of Kimba, because YMS proved pretty much without a shadow of a doubt that the two are not in any way similar besides featuring a lion character in africa with a dead father
Considering how much early manga and anime ripped off western comics and Disney, it's only fair to return the favor.
One about visual novels would be very interesting :) amazing video btw🙌
I just wish more English publishers released Tezuka’s work. The fact Phoenix is out of print is criminal
Series with large cultural impact are not necessarily prioritized over those that seem likely to have the best financial return on investment. A good amount of the golden age of American comics are officially out of print as well.
@@U1TR4F0RCE yeah that's super true, but it does make me wish for a publisher that did a Kickstarter sort of project that would only publish a certain amount of pre-ordered copies. 14:25 This is the point where I knew this would be a serious piece of scholarship! Love to see Sazae-san get its love for the role it had. Don't get me wrong, Tezuka Osamu was massively influential in manga. But sometimes his role can overshadow other influential mangaka and actually you could argue that his biggest influence was how he inspired some mangaka to push back against his type of manga and create genres like Gekiga.
Love to see Shin Takarajina get it's due as well.

Fantastic vid Joey, I'm a 53 yr old Aussie who grew up in the north-west (Pilbara) town of Dampier and only had 1 T.V. station in the 70s and 80s; the ABC. Consequently I grew up with the Astro Boy and Kimba cartoon shows (also Monkey; great Chinese culture influence btw!!) so it's awesome seeing you give credit to some of the (rare Aussie shown) Japanese culture O.G.s!! My older brother watched Prince Planet in Melbourne before I was born (I'm the first Sand Groper in the family), you should look up that one for it's historical importance if you don't know it. Although I have no idea what the show is actually like, it was one of the first anime to show outside of Japan apparently. Thanks again for your great work. PLEASE do more of these types of vids, SO interesting. P.S. - when I studied Impressionism (1991) we were told that the impressionists were majorly influenced by the Japanese wood-block prints coming out of Japan at the time (late 1800's into the early 1900's). Japanese art directly influenced European art all through the 1900s and now more than ever with the bloom of Anime and Manga internationally. Maybe a vid on Japanese art/style on European/British art would be something you're interested in? (any art btw, not just the gallery high-brow shit). Cheers mate! :)
This video is so well done with a completely different vibe from joey's usual videos
I'm loving the new format. Especually since the surging of many Booktube *getting* into Anime and Manga and so they are starting where you started. (I'm not upset, I'm actually extreamly happy for the shift as now Manga is starting to be seen as a ligit form of reading now due to it.) But I can't help but realize I cringe at the mistakes and misunderstanding of context a few times xD where I find myself in the comment section correcting and giving a bit of an insight of the context. I had to clarify some jokes to Phillip Chase (Dr. Fantasy) and Murphy Napier as to the "why" and also a bit more of having that conversation differently. But now they both adjusted to the medium thanks to One Peice and Vinland Saga of all things. Murphy is now even gone as far as read all of Dragonball and Dragonball Z within two months, Is waiting for the next installment for one peice. And let me not get started with Gavin from Gavian reads everything reading whole entire box sets of Manga within weeks One peice ones included.
As to where to go from here that may work with this new format, I think it would be fun to see the actual history of some of the more nuianced genres. But if you want to take a break from a history video, maybe a video talking about certian themes in a span of mangas and why they're used so much in Manga?
one of the best videos on the channel

I love Phoenix so much and I’m always in awe whenever I open a Tezuka story. Sadly, the US doesn’t have physical copies in print. I had to hunt mine down over years and lots of money (😅) . If you live in the US I believe Viz has digital versions you can buy, but they don’t promote that.
S Tier production mate. Probably my favorite video of yours!
Please make more video about mangas! I love the old ones about what you read in the month
IS IT A PLANE ? IS IT A BIRD ? NO ITS
JOEY THE MANGALAD
The Manga Joe somehow forgot to mention Adachi Mitsuru.
TLDR; addressing the BL genre part of the video and the mistakes in it. (time: 35:10) This is not a hate-comment, its just me making sure the very little exposure people get to the genre isn't a misguided one. As I did actually do a lot of research into this.
Was surprised it started off with yaoi's origin considering that was technically not the start of BL (it was Shounen-Ai Kaze to Ki no Uta or for those who wanna go even further back: Sunroom Nite) but I get skipping the details of shounen-ai in 70s since well... its problematic.
Its fine to call BL as a general term ''yaoi'', even though in its origin it is a sub-genre technically since it specifically refers to doujinshi BL stories or unpublished stories. But due to not clarifying properly it will end up confusing the audience on the difference between yaoi and BL.
The sequence of events in terms of genres is: Tanbi literature genre -> Shounen-Ai (70s)-> JUNE/yaoi (kinda happened around the same time) (80s)-> BL (90s)
Shounen-ai is not the same as BL within Japan even though we in the West use it interchangeably. It refers specifically to 70s manga in Japan.
Tanbi is not a BL sub-genre, this is literally like calling Shoujo a BL-sub genre, yes they are related but to call it a mere sub-genre is not right. It is a literature-genre in Japan about aestheticism that might include LGBT-elements but is not solely about that. Within China it did get adopted as a BL-only genre though with the term ''danmei'' which is probably why its nowadays seen as solely BL.
To be fair there is very little info on tanbi-literature genre within Japan online but just look at Junichiro Tanizaki's work (a wellknown tanbi-genre writer) to know that it wasn't all BL. A lot of tanbi was gay tho, we can thank among others Mari Mori and Yukio Mishima for that.
The picture used for the JUNE example is Doukyuusei. Which was not published in JUNE as far as I know, which makes it not JUNE since this label refers to a magazine that featured comics varrying from shounen-ai to modern BL with specific tropes. A JUNE story would also have specific tropes of tragedy and aestheticism borrowing from literature a lot. Doukyuusei, as far as I know, doesn't have the characters die tragically of heartbreak with a nice background sunset for example.
That one book mentioning specifically the comics written by the 24 Year Group as ''exotic and pendantic and difficult to understand.'' did so because this specifically refers to Shounen-Ai which is basically all vague tragedy and lowkey traumatic storylines about European boys that are usually either already dead or on their way to being dead (See: The Heart of Thomas). Its a genre that lost popularity once alternatives arrived for good reason. I hope this clarified some things.
Thank you very much. This was very informative & inspiring.
Going to have to get my hands on some of these series.
22:27 The fact that you're still perpetuating this myth says everything you'd need to know about this video. It's just completely wrong and deliberately dishonest.
Masterpiece!👏
Simple, well directed, funny, constant… if you don’t understand the basics and history of manga with this…
I … well…
Watch it again!!!!😂
I also have a sweet spot for the golden age ones (Versailles, Atom, Grendizer, Harlock, Saint Seiya, Hokuto no ken, Tsubasa…❤
Liking the new direction! Keep it up!
Saw a great video by the channel Matttt to explain this more in depth, but the true creator of the Duck Tales comics (and many other Disney artworks), finally discovered and named (Carl Barks the Legend), was actually Osamu Tezuka's main influence. Drawing manga in the more abstract panel style to show movement and capture a scene was apparently started by Barks' contributions to Disney comics, where he went widely uncredited until recently. I feel that this information is important to share as Carl Barks deserves some credit, if not as much as Tezuka himself. Carl is the original inspiration of the artist who inspired everyone.

I've been watching you since the beginning and this might be your best video ever. I really hope you do more like this. I would love to see one for the history of anime and maybe even light novels in this style. You could also do some for Big publications like Shonen Jump or studios like Toei to show how they evolved.
why is a fanart of luffy in the thumbnail😅
