    Boomerangs
    Can by used by:
    -Erik
    Boomerangs are exclusive to Erik and unfortunately pretty weak, they attack all enemies with poor accuracy the only truly worthwhile damage comes pretty late in the game.
    -Ooze Bruiser 2MP
    [Deals 1.5x damage to slimes, 1x damage otherwise]
    This is your type effective ability for boomerangs against slimes. This abilities don’t really need much explaining. Unfortunately it’s only a 50% damage increase and boomerangs are already fairly weak.
    -Metalicker 3MP
    [Deals 1-2 damage to metal slimes, normal damage otherwise. Ignores blindness and evasion]
    This is basically AoE Metal Slash and just like with Metal Slash you’re almost always better off using high crit abilities instead. However you can use the niche “ignores blindness and evasion” effect to compensate for boomerang’s poor accuracy.
    -Twomerang 8MP
    [Deals 1.2x damage in two hits, 2.4x damage total]
    -Twomerang is decent, it’s unfortunate that it does decreasing damage on subsequent hits Still it’s a decent bit of extra damage even if it’s a little expensive on MP.
    -Powerthrow 4MP
    [Deals 1.2x damage to all targets, no damage reduction on subsequent targets]
    Powerthrow is great, it patches up one of the main weaknesses of boomerangs and it’s pretty cheap too. You really have no reason not to just use it in most battles, plus 20% extra damage is great.
    -Starburst Throw 10MP
    [Deals 70-130 light damage to all targets, damage]
    Starburst Throw actually kinda sucks, it’s fixed damage based on Magical Might and Erik actually has the lowest natural MMi in the game. (Not counting the characters with 0 MMi)
    -Double Down 24MP
    [Deals 1.8x damage in two hits, 3.6x damage total. 50% chance of lowering each target's resistances to debuffs & ailments]
    Double Down is easily your best boomerang skill and a fantastic AoE ability in general, even with the damage decreasing on subsequent hits. If Erik uses Divide you can do 10.8x damage allowing for some incredible AoE physical damage. Even without any buffs or Divide, lowering status/debuff resistance is a great effect and also exclusive to Double Down.

    Greatswords
    Can by used by:
    -Hero
    -Hendrik
    Greatswords are easily one of the best weapons in the game, they have the highest raw ATK and they don’t have a single gimmicky or useless ability. They even make up for not having shield by having having high parry chances.
    While Greatswords are an amazing weapon with nothing but useful skills and incredible raw ATK. Hendrik’s true potential really shines through with a one handed weapon since he can use a shield be the amazing tank that he is.
    -Greatsword Guard 3MP
    [Adds 33% parry chance for 4 turns]
    Since greatswords can’t block they must parry, they actually get naturally higher parry chance than any other weapon, which means this great ability gets even better. Parrying and Blocking are the exact same thing, they negate all damage except for crits and AoE spells. However your block and parry percentages are independent of each other despite having the same function, Though this obviously doesn’t matter for a two handed weapon like greatsword.
    -Cutting Edge 8MP
    [Deals 1.75x - 2.25x damage to a single enemy, cannot crit]
    Cutting edge is pretty simple in how it works, it basically does (roughly) double damage in one hit, very potent, a little costly for MP tho.
    -Heliochopter 4MP
    [Deals 1x damage to a group of enemies, no damage reduction on subsequent hits]
    Heliochopter is one of the most efficient abilities for the game, allowing to attack a group of enemies for roughly equal damage for such a low MP cost, the fact that this kind of ability is on the highest damage weapon just elevates a good ability to a great one!
    -Frost Fangs 10MP
    [Deals 65-135 ice elemental damage, 25% chance of stunning each enemy]
    Frost Fangs is arguably the worst the regular GS skills and it’s still pretty good, a testament to how great GSs are, Unfortunately it’s fixed damage based on STR but the stun chance is a nice bonus. (Yeah freeze isn’t a status in DQ so it just stuns instead, still good though)
    -Unbridled Blade 16MP
    [Deals 2.9x - 3.1x damage to a single enemy, cannot crit]
    Unbridled damage is fantastic burst damage especially with the high raw of greatswords, however it is pretty expensive it might not be a bad idea to cast decelerate on your target too lower the chance of missing since you’re relying on a single hit. Once you get this it becomes your bread and butter for bosses, Sap + Oomphle + UB = WIN… Assuming you don’t miss.

    Swords
    Can by used by:
    -Hero
    -Erik
    -Sylvando
    -Hendrik
    Swords are pretty average, their damage is quite middling and they have equal part gimmicky situational abilities and good damaging abilities. They do have the benefit of being able to equip a shield so they make up for lower damage in that regard.
    -Flame Slash 2MP
    [Deals 1.2x fire damage to a single enemy]
    This is actually one of the few good sword skills, because just it’s a 20% damage increase and an element, as long as your target doesn’t resist fire than you’ll get extra damage from it. Obviously the damage isn’t exactly huge but it’s a nice cheap damage boost.
    -Sword Stance 2MP
    [Adds 33% parry chance for 4 turns]
    Swords don’t have nearly as good parry chance to either Greatswords and Spears but it’s still a great ability regardless, plus parry and block chances are both independent of each other, think of it as two dice rolls for both your block and parry chance.
    -Dragon Slash 2MP
    [Deals 2x damage to a single enemy if dragon-type, 1x damage otherwise]
    Dragon Slash is one of the “Type effective” moves as I call them, It’s purely situational on If you’re fighting a dragon, Luckily it’s pretty obvious if a monster is a dragon or not. This type effective move is basically worthless however, since you can just falcon slash instead, which basically does the exact same thing except to everything AND gets a high crit bonus… The only real downside is that it costs… Get ready for it… 2MP more than Dragon Slash… Yeah huge sacrifice right there.
    -Metal Slash 2MP
    [Deals a minimum of 1-2 damage to metal slimes normal damage otherwise. Ignores evasion/blind]
    Metal Slash is one of the first gimmick abilities that swords get and why I don’t recommend them. Metal Slash is almost always inferior to high crit based abilities for metal hunting, however the ability to ignore evasion/blind is could actually come in handy in certain situations.
    -Miracle Slash 4MP
    [Deals 1x damage to a target, user recovers [25% + 20] HP of damage dealt]
    Miracle Slash is yet another gimmick sword skill, however considering the low damage of swords you’re almost always better off just healing with a spell instead.
    However there is one niche use for Miracle Slash. If you use a Miracle Sword which basically is a sword with a permanent MS effect, they actually stack and you heal 50% damage dealt, The Miracle Sword actually has pretty respectable attack too so it’s not a bad setup.
    -Falcon Slash 4MP
    [Deals two hits of 1x damage (2x damage total) to a single enemy. High critical hit chance]
    Falcon Slash is one of best sword skills it makes up swords having mediocre damage with high crit rate and since t’s so cheap on MP you afford to pretty much use it all the time. Oh and yes, Falcon Slash is affected by dual wielding (like all attacks) but ISN’T affected by using a Falcon Sword, as they only effect your regular attack, kinda a shame but they did then you could potentially end up doing eight slashes… or 24 if you used Erik’s Divide.
    -Gigaslash 16MP
    [Deals 90-230 lightning damage to all enemies]
    -Gigagash 32MP
    [Deals 220-410 lightning damage to all enemies]
    The giga skills are exclusive to Hero and while pretty pricey on MP are some of Hero’s best sources of AoE damage. In terms of giga skills for swords actually are better than greatswords since they actually target all enemies instead of a group.
    -Fatal Slash 8MP
    [Deals 2.5x damage to a single target with a 40% chance of an instant kill]
    Fatal Slash is exclusive to Erik and and the third most damaging sword skill in the game. It doesn’t have the high crit and multi hit benefit of Falcon Slash but it is 50% stronger in terms of raw ATK.
    -Gyrfalcon Slash 16MP
    [Deals four hits of 1x damage (4x damage total) to a single enemy]
    Gyrfalcon Slash is exclusive to Hendrik and is the most damaging sword skill in the game (By itself anyway). Hendrik having the highest natural STR definitely helps too. Unfortunately it doesn’t have the high crit benefit of Falcon Slash. Also it’s 4 times as expensive for character with the second lowest MP.

    Knives
    Can by used by:
    -Erik
    -Sylvando
    Knives have the second lowest raw ATK in game, not counting wands. That being said they still phenomenal single target damage and if Erik uses them; the best single target damage in game.
    -Sleeper Hit 3MP
    [Deals 1.2x damage against a target with a 50% chance of inducing sleep the target]
    Sleeper Hit is fantastic, not only can it set up for major damage with Persecutter but applying sleep in general is super helpful for regular combat. Plus an extra 20% damage is a nice bonus.
    -Persecutter 5MP
    [Deals 6.2x damage against a target if they're affected by sleep or confusion. 1.1x damage otherwise]
    This is the big reason why knives are one of the best weapons in game and why Erik in particular is the best single target damage dealer in the game. The Sleep/Confusion status nuke combo are ideal for regular combat since most bosses resist or are immune to sleep.
    -Cobra Strike 3MP
    [Deals 1.2x damage against a target with a 50% chance of envenomating the target]
    Venom is basically just super poison it does damage of a percentage of the target’s HP whereas poison is just a flat number. Poison/Venom by themselves are arguably the most underwhelming statuses in the game, however because of that they’re very reliable to applying on bosses, they last long and no boss can cure them.
    -Victimiser 5MP
    [Deals 6.2x damage against a target if they're affected by poison or paralysis. 1.1x damage otherwise]
    This is one of the best boss destroying abilities since Venom is super reliable and next to no bosses resist it or are outright immune to it.
    -Assassin's Stab 5MP
    [Deals 1x damage against a target with a 40% chance of instantly killing them]
    Assassin’s Stab is exclusive to Erik and is quite lacklustre, it has the pretty low odds of an insta kill skill and doesn’t even do extra damage. Still it’s cheap and there if you want to use it.
    -HP Hoover 4MP
    [Deals 1x damage against a target, heals 25% of the damage dealt]
    HP Hoover is also exclusive to Erik and is pretty much a worse Miracle Slash since Knives have terrible raw ATK, It’s arguably the worst knife skill.
    -Sudden Death 8MP
    [Deals 2x light damage with a 20% chance of instantly killing the target]
    Sudden Death is exclusive to Sylv and his variant of Assassin's Stab, it sacrifices 20% insta-kill odds for double damage. It’s pretty decent.

    Wands
    Can by used by:
    -Serena
    Wands are exclusive to Serena and offer some truly incredible supportive abilities. You can even dual wield wands to get even more Magical Mending. I wouldn’t recommend it until Act 3 through as the extra MMe isn’t worth sacrificing a shield.
    -Devil’s Delight 3MP
    [Deals 2.25x damage to an enemy if demon type, 1.5x damage otherwise. 25% chance of beguiling them if they're a demon. Unaffected by dual-wielding, ignores evasion and blind. Low critical hit chance]
    -Alma Mater 8MP
    [Applies a buff to an ally that allows them to survive attacks that would kill them, leaving them at 1 HP as long as their HP is above 50% of their max HP. Lasts four turns.] The original description for this ability is terrible, it makes you think that this ability only protects from insta-kills which it doesn’t, That aside this is an amazing ability for protecting against crits or just otherwise powerful attacks.
    -Snap, Crackle, Poof 8MP
    [Applies a buff to an ally that renders them immune to all statuses and debuffs for four turns] I feel like I shouldn’t have to explain why this is amazing. Considering you can’t get any accessories that protect from all statuses until postgame this ability is a lifesaver. That fact that it protects from debuffs as well is a bonus, especially since there’s no equipment that ever protects against them.
    -Grace of the Goddess 10MP
    [Applies a buff to the caster that automatically revives the user if they are killed. Lasts five turns]
    -Divine Restitution 10MP
    [Deals 220-400 light damage to a group of enemies, applies a debuff to caster that heals them for 52-100 health for 5 turns]
    -Divine Intervention 12MP
    [Applies a buff to an ally that allows them to survive an attack would kill them, leaving them at 1 HP as long as their HP is above 1 HP. Lasts four turns]

    Heavy Wands
    Can by used by:
    -Veronica
    -Rab
    The purpose of Heavy Wands is to boosting their users’ Magical Might and granting other magical benefits. Most of best things from investing in Heavy Wands is actually passive stat bonuses but there’s definitely some helpful abilities too.
    -Beelzefreeze 2MP
    [Deals 1.5x damage to demons with a 50% chance of causing paralysis. 1x damage otherwise no paralysis on non-demons either]
    In almost all situations, this ability sucks, however 50% paralysis chance is the highest you’ll ever get (Ability wise anyway) so if you’re up against a demon that can actually come in handy, also I feel like it goes without saying but the damage is going to be awful even against demons since Heavy Wands have terrible raw ATK.
    -Antimagic 2MP
    [Attempts to silence an enemy to prevent them from casting spells, 90% success rate]
    This is pretty great single target variant of Fizzle, which has a minimum success rate of 75%. So you switch to Antimagic if you need higher odds. It’s good to know you can turn to Antimagic if you get Fizzled yourself.
    -Staff of Salvation 4MP
    [Heals the target for 60-140 health]
    This is one of the few ways to heal outside of the spells. It’s quite comparable to Midheal. This is also Veronica’s only way to heal outside of items, just be aware that she has non existent Magical Mending so it’ll pretty much only heal the bare minimum.
    -Ring of Ruin 4MP
    [Increases all allies’ critical spell change by 20%]
    Ring of Ruin is another good way of getting extra damage out of your casters or waste a turn because you got unlucky. One particular good use is using it for Rab’s dark spells as they get a 4x crit boost.
    -Zing Stick 12MP
    [Resurrects a fallen ally with 25-50% HP]
    Zing Stick is decent alternative to Zing since it’s guaranteed to recoveries less HP, it also let’s Veronica be able resurrect allies outside of the rare Yggdrasil Leaves. Of course If Veronica uses it she won’t heal much HP since she has no natural Magical Mending, but still a nice option nonetheless.

    Axes
    Can by used by:
    -Hendrik
    Axes are exclusive to Hendrik and have the third highest raw ATK and the highest raw of any one handed weapons. Their abilities hit hard and you can still use a shield with them too. Which is good because Hendrik REALLY benefits from using a shield.
    -Helm Splitter 3MP
    [Deals 1.2x damage to target, 50% chance of lowering the enemy's DEF by 50%. Low critical hit chance]
    Helm Splitter is great, DEF DOWN is one of the best debuffs in the game. Allowing you to apply it and do a 20% extra damage very efficient.
    -Parallax 10MP
    [Deals 3x damage to a single enemy, 25% chance of inflicting paralysis. Low critical hit chance]
    Parallax is great burst damage, the chance to paralyse isn’t really something you’ll see much, but it’s a nice bonus.
    -Hatchet Man 4MP
    [Attempts to deal a critical hit to the enemy, 50% accuracy, unaffected by defense, blindness and evasion]
    Hatchet Man is yet another incredible Metal Slime hunting tool. Unfortunately Hendrik has the worst AGI in the game so he’ll almost always go last, but it’s useful nonetheless.
    -Scrap Mettle 9MP
    [Deals 1.5x damage to a single enemy, 50% chance of lowering the enemy's DEF by 75%]
    Scrap Mettle is a direct upgrade from Helm Splitter with extra damage and it even lowers DEF by and extra 25%. It’s a little expensive on MP but often times worth it.
    -Axes of Evil 16MP
    [Deals 2.2x damage to a group of enemies, damage doesn't reduce on subsequent targets]
    Axes of Evil is amazing, it does great damage, has no damage reduction on subsequent hits

    Spears
    Can by used by:
    -Serena
    -Jade
    Spears have the second strongest ATK in the game and while they have a couple gimmick abilities most of their other abilities very useful. Spears also have the second best parry chance to make up for not being able to use a shield.
    -Cattle Prod 2MP
    [Deals 1.5x damage against beast-type enemies, 1x damage otherwise]
    This is your type effective move for beasts. Beasts are not only fairly easy to recognise but also quite common so you can easily take advantage of the 50% damage increase.
    -Deliverance 2MP
    [Deals 1.5x damage against undead-type enemies, 1x damage otherwise]
    This is your type effective move for zombies, It can be a little tricky to see what’s an undead enemy and what’s a demon. Still undead enemies are fairly common so it’s a decent skill.
    -Party Pooper 4MP
    [Deals 0.8x damage against a group of enemies]
    Party Pooper is alright it’s only 80% of your max ATK and it suffers from damage reduction on subsequent hits. Both Jade and Serena have much better options for cheap AoE damage. Still it’s not bad, could do a lot worse.
    -Thunder Thrust 6MP
    [Attempts to deal a critical hit to a single enemy with a 50% success rate. Ignores blind, evasion and defense]
    Thunder Thrust is an amazing metal slime hunting tool and easily the best way to deal with them. You can also use to take a chance for extra damage, if you’re feeling lucky.
    -Lightning Thrust 9MP
    [Attempts to deal a critical hit to a single enemy with a 67% success rate Ignores blind, evasion and defense]
    Lighting Thrust is exclusive to Jade and is just a direct upgrade from Thunder Thrust, not much else to say. It costs an extra 3MP for an extra 17% crit chance. I’d recommend saving your skills points for better stuff as you can get by just fine with Thunder Thrust.
    -Multithrust 12MP
    [Deals four hits of 0.75x damage (3x damage total) to random enemies within selected enemy group. Low critical hit chance]
    Multithrust is Exclusive to Jade and white it is a bit expensive on MP it’s fantastic for dealing with powerful single targets.
    -Crushed Ice 16MP
    [Deals four hits of 0.9x ice damage (3.6x total) to a single target, low critical hit chance]
    Crushed Ice is basically an ice variant of Multithrust. Just be aware that depending an your target’s resistance it could end up doing less damage than Multithrust.
    -Lightning Storm 24MP
    [Deals 160-300 lightning damage to a group of enemies and either increases the damage they take from lightning by 40% or has a 20% chance of paralysing them]
    Lightning Storm is exclusive to Jade and in most situations not worth the expensive MP cost. It’s definitely a strong ability, even if it’s only fixed damage and the ability to lower lighting resistance has good synergy with Hero’s Zap spells.
    -Flashback 10MP
    [Lowers DEF to 1 but increases evasion to 100% and allows user to perform counterattacks that deal 1.5x damage for 2 turns]
    Flashback is exclusive to Jade and basically makes her immune to physical attacks. It’s ideal to put her in the No.1 spot in the lineup to increase her chances of being targeted.
    -Be Like Water 12MP
    [Increases parry chance by 20%, evasion chance by 50%, enables counter attacks at 1x damage for two turns]
    Be Like Water is exclusive to Serena and interesting gimmick skill, As it increases both evasion AND parry chance. Which is great because you can’t dodge magic but you can parry it. The counter thing doesn’t really matter since Serena’s ATK isn’t anything special, still it’s a nice effect.
    -Counter Wait 8MP
    [Increases evasion to 100% and enables counter attacks at 1x damage for one turn]
    Counter Wait is exclusive to Serena and basically makes her immune to physical attacks, however unlike Jade’s Flashback ability your counter attacks don’t get a 50% damage boost.

    Whips
    Can by used by:
    -Veronica
    -Sylvando
    Whips on paper are actually fantastic, they’re all about applying statuses to a group of monsters… Unfortunately in reality, not only is the damage of whips low (The second lowest two handed weapon in the game, not counting Heavy Wands.). The rates for applying said statuses are low as well, so more often than not you’ll end up failing, doing paltry damage and wasting a turn.
    -Hypnowhip 5MP
    [1.1x damage to target enemy group, 25% chance of inflicting confusion]
    This is one of the major problems with Whips. While confusion is a decent status 25% odds are pretty low and that’s not even factoring resistance.
    -Lashings of Love 2MP
    [1.5x damage to humanoids, target enemy group. Normal damage on non-humanoids]
    -Hit the Hay 5MP
    [1.1x damage to target enemy group, 25% chance of inflicting sleep]
    Sleep is a good status and usually fairly dependable. 25% is pretty low, still it’s less of a gamble than the other whip skills. It has good synergy with the knife skills too.
    -Trammel Lash 5MP
    [1.1x damage to target enemy group, 25% chance of inflicting paralysis]
    Paralysis is a fantastic status, if you can apply it, tends to be resisted a lot. But if can land it then your target will be a sitting duck.
    -Twin Dragon Lash 8MP
    [Two hits of 2x damage to a single target 4x total]
    -Starstrike 5MP
    [1x light damage to target enemy group, 50% chance of inflicting dazzle]
    Starstrike is your safest status whip skill, also the fact that it’s an elemental move means you could get some extra damage for enemies weak to light. Definitely the best status whip skill.
    Whipcrackle 16MP
    [3.2x lightning damage to target enemy group, high critical hit chance]
    Whipcrackle is exclusive to Veronica and even tho her STR is the worst in the game, Whipcrackle will constantly hit like a truck, plus it’s lightning element which is rarely resisted, very good skill.
    -Wyrm Whip 12MP
    [Three hits of 0.6x damage (1.8x total) to a single target, removes any buffs]
    Wyrm Whip’s damage isn’t anything to write home about, the big thing is the ability to remove buffs. The only other way to remove them are two different skills that both belong to Rab, so having other characters that can remove buffs is very helpful indeed.
    -Lash Batter 10MP
    [Deals 1.5x damage to a group of enemies with a 25% chance of applying beguilement]
    Lash Batter is exclusive to Sylv and the only other to apply beguilement is Sylv’s Pied Piper Skill. Lash Batter has worse odds to apply it but targets a group. Unfortunately beguilement is one of the hardest status to apply, as it’s basically super confusion.

    Claws
    Can by used by:
    -Jade
    -Rab
    Claws have some interesting abilities and properties. They have very low ATK but always hit twice, have high crit. Jade with claws can recover HP with each hit and Rab can recover MP with each hit. It’s also worth mentioning that Rab has the best STR of any caster (Unless you include hero) not that means a whole lot, Claws already has terrible raw ATK and Rab is already not strong, tho interestingly he does get extra dodge chance passives from his claws skill tree.
    -Propeller Blade 2MP
    [Deals wind damage equal to your ATK + level to a single enemy]
    Propeller Blade is pretty weak, the wind element effect is nice but that’s the only good thing about it. Your regular claw attack is 1.7x and the levels in DQ are 1-99 so this move definitely isn’t gonna be anything special.
    -Can Opener 4MP

    This is the type effective move machines. While machines aren’t that common they are always very tanky so it’s definitely a very helpful ability to have deal with them.
    -Hawkeye Claw 5MP
    [Deals 1.8x - 2.2x damage to a single enemy, ignores blind and evasion and any damage reduction]
    Hawkeye Claw is decent, It’s damage isn’t amazing but the ability to always hit full damage can be helpful sometimes.
    -Hardclaw 10MP
    [Deals three hits of 1.3x, 1.2x, 1.1x (in that order, 3.6x total) to a single enemy]
    Hardclaw is pretty simple, it’s a hard hitting move, even with Rab who has lower much STR than Jade.
    -Crone’s Claw 6MP
    [Deals 2x damage to a single enemy, user recovers 5% of damage dealt in MP]
    Crone’s Claw is exclusive to Jade which is good because she was the lowest MP in the game, so this gives a nice way to maintain her MP.
    -Air Raiser 12MP
    [Deals 90-345 + (level * 1.5 +10) wind damage to a single enemy]
    Air Raiser is an upgrade of Propeller Blade. For once a fixed damage ability is actually better than one purely ATK. It’ll consistently deal respectable wind damage, even if it’s a bit expensive on MP.
    -Wild Animaul 24MP
    [Deals five hits of 1.5x, 1.0x, 1.0x, 0.5x, 0.5x damage (4.5x damage total) to a single enemy. Low critical hit chance]
    -Rake 'n' Break 12MP
    [Deals 2.4x - 2.6x damage to a single enemy, removes any buffs from the enemy]
    Rake 'n' Break is exclusive to Rab another way for him to remove buffs besides his ability from his “Enlightenment” skill tree, They both do the same thing except Rake 'n' Break does some decent damage too.
    -Hand of God 24MP
    [Deals 150-420 light damage to a single enemy]
    Hand of God is pretty good. It does damage based on STR not ATK so it can’t benefit Oomph or claws with high ATK, but it’s still good skill regardless.
