    Chris, you need to use a 4A 5V supply on the barrel jack. You're running in 5W mode that limits the system speed. This is stated in the manual. CPU max clock 900Mhtz, and GPU 600Mhtz. Vs in 10W mode of 1.4Ghtz and gpu 920Mhtz

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  5 років тому

      Thanks for this, but as I've noted below, it is not stated in the manual. :) Indeed, I've just re-read the PDF user guide (and searched it) and there is no mention of a low power mode, 5W mode, or any contraint on GPU performance if using a sufficient micro USB adapter. Rather, the advice there is "if the developer kit’s total load is expected to exceed 2A, e.g., due to peripherals attached to the carrier board, connect the J48 Power Select Header pins to disable power supply via Micro-USB and enable 5V⎓4A via the J25 power jack".

      My apologies Chris, it looks like I got confused with the usage of the nvpmodel command. By default the system will run in 10W mode but if you're having issues with it running from USB power then 'sudo nvpmodel -m1' can be used to place the system in 5W mode with the reduction of clock speeds. I had incorrectly assumed that the system switched to 5W when running of USB power as a lot of people were saying it was necessary to do so to run from USB power. As your power supply is a 3W one then you got lucky. :) 'sudo nvpmodel -q' will state what mode you're in. Mine says "NV Power Mode: MAXN".

      Hi Richard. Thanks greatly for this. We are all learning as quickly as we can about this new board. :)

    Really nice review Chris. While I agree with some other comments about the lack of M.2/SSD support being a negative, it seems that none of these SOC/SOM sbc's are fully complete yet. There are always compromises of one sort or another. Given the means, I would like to 'play around' with most of them, and tasks each to its own strengths. Thanks for another great video.

    I like the presentation style. Reminds of of Making the Most of the Micro era.

    We need an AMD Zen + Vega IoT board, but this one is really good, tho only if it had intel or amd cpu not arm cortex

      I am not sure if AMD is going to really jump into the IoT space, they have their own platform right now which is not Arm derived. With that said though it might happen.

      What you wish for exists, but it's in an entirely different price range and far larger and more powerful
      Comes in lot more powerful Ryzen Embedded V1605B or V1202B CPU
      With either Vega 8 or Vega 3 GPU integrated.
      Has TONS of IO and uses laptop DDR4 SODIMM memory.

    The mere fact it can do anything volumetric related in even anything remotely related to real time rendering is amazing. Ray tracing and volumetrics do not generally mix well without a heavy helping of patience,

    Very interesting little board. Looks like it would be fun to play around with. But as a hardware guy, some things caught my eye. On the module itself you can see where the eMMC would go and on the main board you can see where they would use a different usb power and on the other side what I would assume would be a battery holder. Maybe for a real-time clock? Anyways, another fantastic video!
