I did some rust repair this weekend on my 4Runner, little spot on top. I sanded it down than sprayed rust oleum rusty primer, put two coats of touch up paint and two coats of clear coat. After I did that I noticed the primer showed a little thru the paint. My question is would I still be protected from rust with little bit of primer showing thru the paint? Thanks for your time and knowledge.

It will offer some protection, keep an eye on it. Redo later if necessary, sounds like you are slowing the spread of it, -better than nothing :)

@@JLeeChron yeah I would of did more coats but it was getting dark and I thought two would be sufficient. Even with the rust oleum primer the rust could lift the paint and primer back up eventually?

@@jaymoar3561 unfortunately yes, a lot of this rust comes from backside/underneath, or, in the cases of 4R and Tacoma -predominately from the inside of the frame- you probably know that. Its a cancer, hard to control once it gets going.

@@JLeeChron thanks for your reply’s, one last question if I did have to redo with the rust coming back, would sandpaper take my paint and primer to bare metal again? I know primer is harder to get off. Would rust make it easier to take off and redo? Thanks for your time.

@@jaymoar3561 you could redo it, at that point body filler may be needed to smooth it out, or the rust could eat it away. You did the right thing by trying to slow it down. Spray the back side with fluidfilm to further slow it
